Beekeeping

This was in our front yard today-

Dont know if this is ever going to become MY hobby...but Scott seems to be enjoying it.

Kent Huskins

Did you know that Kent Huskins could do this----

Why isn't he playing in this series against the Red Wings?  lol.

Sharks win (in OVERTIME)

Ok, NOTHING is more exciting than Playoff Hockey, except maybe OVERTIME Playoff Hockey.  The San Jose Sharks are getting pretty good at overtime.  So far this post season they have played in 4 overtime games ... AND have WON them ALL.

William was EXHAUSTED from his week at camp....but he was awake enough to watch the Sharks game.  I am so glad the game was on Friday instead of Thursday because William would have missed it on Thursday and I LOVE watching the games with William.  The other day my friend Levi asked me if the Sacramento Kings were in the NBA Playoff and the Sharks were in the NHL Playoffs and the games were on at the SAME time, which one would I watch....and the answer is the Sharks, but that's only because when I was a BIG Kings fan that was a "Melanee and I" thing, and now this Sharks obsession, is more of a "William and I" thing....so Sharks trump Kings.  I am really going to miss William when he moves to Virginia in August.  And not just because he is my best hockey buddy!

We quieted Andrew down by letting him play one of his computer games and Bradley watched the hockey with us.  Scott was sent out to work, to keep him from walking in front of the tv numerous times.

The Sharks played SO WELL, but guess what the score was after the first period???  Red Wings 1, Sharks ZERO.  Why does this always seem to happen.....shots on goal, saved, shots to the goalies chest, saved, shots blocked by defenders, shots shot wide, shots shot high, shots going everywhere but in the net.  Still it was some very exciting hockey.  Second period much of the same, except for the last 5 minutes of the period, when Detroit had their share of chances, but the score stayed at 1-0.  Third period, the Sharks scored it off a terrific goal by Joe Pavelski.  He batted the puck out of the air and into the goal.  Celebration time!  But it was then only tied, the game went into overtime meaning whoever scores first WINS.  Overtime, heart pounding, palms sweaty, stomach in knots, edge of seat sitting.  Hate and LOVE it at the same time.

And can you believe it....you may have already read my earlier post about it.....the Sharks rookie, SCORED, on his birthday, on his first shot (on net), in his first action in the NHL since February, in his first ever Stanley Cup Playoff, hadn't been on the ice in over 20 minutes.....he SCORED the game winner.  It was SPECTACULAR and I think Bradley, William, and MY cheering was louder even than the party down the street with the live band!

GO SHARKS!!!!!

Shady Creek

William spent a week volunteering at the Shady Creek Outdoor School.  It was an environmental camp for 6th graders.  William was a group counselor.  I got two texts during the week, one said, "I am wiped out" that was on Wednesday, the other came on Thursday saying, "I'm so tired."  I guess 6th grade boys don't sleep.  I guess they also don't listen....when I picked him up, William got into the car and said, "I don't ever want to have kids."  He said that he had to do EVERYTHING for them.  Also, when he got home his first words to Andrew were, "I missed you.  It will be nice to spend some time with a well behaved kid."  (Andrew!  "Well Behaved"!?!?!?? ha)  I do have a picture, but it is just a photo copy, so it would be hard to scan and post here, but I will tell you what the principal or director had to say about William in his evaluation--
"Thank you William for all of your hard work this past week!  Always helpful, a blessing to have.  Presented an awesome attitude or his boys to follow in every situation.  Thank you for giving you best and giving your boys a week that they will never forget!"
-And he checked the box "Above Standard" for overall assessment.
Here he is after a shower in the t shirt they gave him....hey, how do you like the "playoff beard"?  Better than many of the players, huh???

Red Wings

I don't really like spicy chicken wings...they are too spicy.  I don't really even like chicken wings, there is not enough meat on them, but the Sharks were playing the Red Wings last night, so our meal HAD to be Wings, didn't it?  You know, chomp chomp on the Wings, Sharks tearing apart some Red Wings, oh the symbolism.  I had a coupon for Kentucky Fried Chicken, so I bought some.  William had chicken for lunch which he said was awful, so he wasn't in the mood to eat very many wings, but luckily Bradley liked them.  And guess what, while the Guymons were chomping on wings, the Sharks did the same thing!

Trampoline fun

It is not even summer here, not even WARM....
but that doesn't stop the kids,
this is a usual every day activity--

Out Door Cooking (pt. 2)

Also on Wednesday after teaching the Cub Scouts about outdoor cooking, I taught the Young Women about outdoor cooking.  While our cinnamon bread was cooking out in the Dutch Oven we went into the kitchen to eat some real cinnamon rolls...here are my girls---

And here is our cinnamon bread cooking...the out side burnt while the middle was raw....the Young Men ate it ALL up, though...there was not a crumb left after I told the young men they could have it.

Cub Scouts

We did outdoor cooking at Cub Scouts on Wednesday.  We also played volleyball with a beach ball.  They had a lot of fun.  We cooked hot dogs and marshmellows.  Karsten and Izzak wondered why we didn't have any ketchup...really, now, who puts ketchup on their hot dogs????

Been Missin You!

I haven't been blogging mych because of something that happened on Twitter, but I'm over it...so I'm back!
This is a picture that was in my back up camera at the track meet last week.  I took the picture too early, so the runners are way far away and small, but this picture is cool in that it shows a lot of the track and all the "tents" in the background where teams camped out all day.
And you cant tell from this picture how cool this really was, but it was a group of grey rain clouds and right in the middle was a hole where the sun was shining through with beautiful sun beams radiating down.

BOOM!

Benn Ferriero..first time ever playing in a Stanley Cup Playoff game.....on his birthday........played only 5 minutes.....took only one shot in this whole game.....game winning goal...in overtime!!!!
SHARKS WIN!!!!!!!

A Necessary Repost

LOL...I sometimes look at old blog posts...LOL...and I saw this today and felt it would be appropriate to repost it again, not because the World Cup will be happening ANY TIME SOON (wish it was, but we have a while to wait)....but, because it is PLAYOFF TIME, hockey playoffs, that is, I could care less about basketball playoffs, just as long and Kobe and LeBron lose---

Dear Husband/Children (and Mike Natress)
I did not really write this, I found it on another blog, (and I changed the word "wife" to husband), but these things have all been said or thought to my family before (especially #3)!

Rule #1

Between now and the awarding of the Stanley Cup, you should read the sports section of the newspaper so that you are aware of what is going on regarding the World of Hockey, and that way you will be able to join in the conversations. If you fail to do this, then you will be looked at in a bad way, or you will be totally ignored. DO NOT complain about not receiving any attention.

Rule #2

During the Stanley Cup Playoff, the television is mine, at all times, without any exceptions. If you even take a glimpse of the remote control, you will lose it (your eye).

Rule #3

If you have to pass by in front of the TV during a game, I don’t mind, as long as you do it crawling on the floor and without distracting me.

Rule #4

During the games I will be blind, deaf and mute. You are out of your mind if you expect me to listen to you, open the door, answer the telephone, or pick up the baby that just fell on the floor….It won’t happen.

Rule #5

Please do not make any funny faces to my friends when they come over to watch the games. In return, you will be allowed to use the TV between 12am and 6am, unless they replay a good game that I missed during the day.

Rule #6

Please, please, please!! If you see me upset because one of my teams is losing, DO NOT say “get over it, it’s only a game”, or “don’t worry, they’ll win next time”. If you say these things, you will only make me angrier and I will love you less. Remember, you will never ever know more about hockey than me and your so called “words of encouragement” will only lead to a break up or divorce.

Rule #7

You are welcome to sit with me to watch one game and you can talk to me during intermissions but only when the commercials are on, and only if the score is pleasing me. In addition, please note I am saying “one” game; hence do not use Playoff Hockey as a nice cheesy excuse too “spend time together”.

Rule #8

The replays of the goals are very important. I don’t care if I have seen them or I haven’t seen them, I want to see them again… many times.

Rule #9

Tell your friends NOT to have any meetings, parties, or gatherings that requires my attendance because:

1.I will not go,
2.I will not go, and
3.I will not go.

Rule #10

But, if a friend of mine invites us to their house to watch a game, we will be there in a flash.

Rule #11

The daily Stanley Cup highlights show on TV every night is just as important as the games themselves. Do not even think about saying “but you have already seen this…why don’t you change the channel to something we can all watch?” because, the reply will be, “Refer to Rule #2 of this list”

P/S: By the way if you get stuck on the road call the Police or AAA.

Hits and Misses

Going to do another Hits and Misses for tonights game.  (Minus the LINKS, those are time consuming, and really NO ONE clicked on any of them last time...I could have linked in Popeye for Wellwood and no one would have noticed.)

Hits-

Niemi....he let in 3, which is a lot, but he stopped 30, so he had a much better game than the time he let in 3 and stopped 1.  Good Job Nemo.

Marc Edouard Vlasic...I LOVE this guys accent.  I want him to be interviewed EVER single stinkin game it is so cute.  And his hockey skills are pretty awesome, too.  He is the best.

Demers...please continue to sneak up into the offense, you are the best shooting defender, keep it up.

Jumbo Joe....great game winner, great celebration slide.  More shooting next game, though, (and tell Dan Boyle to shoot when he has an open lane, too).

Joe Pavelski....lots of shots, lots of hustle, lots of hard work, lots of great passes.

Patrick Marleau.....just for looking nice in his suit during the post game interview.

Misses-

Jamie McGinn....sorry Jamie, but you shouldn't have hit that King so hard, up against the wall, after he had passed the puck.  You put your team in a bad spot.

Coach McClellan....for picking McGinn over Eager.  In one of the interviews I read that the coach liked McGinn cuz he played in 15 playoff games last year, so he has playoff experience....um, yeah, well, Eager has a STANLEY CUP RING, isn't that enough play off experience????  And the coach praised McGinn after last game for staying OUT of the penalty box, well, guess where he ended up....Eager could have done that!  And maybe a between the leg pass, shot, score, too!  How many goals has McGinn scored this year???

Coach Terry Murray....he should be the #1 miss...I just read that he didn't shake hands with the Sharks post game.  Not very classy, coach.  Not nice AT ALL.

And....Mark Purdy a San Jose Mercury News writer whom I wish would be fired any time soon....he is just AWFUL!  Don't like the guy at all....or his "reports".  Save them for the kitty litter box or for fire starter cuz they are not worth reading.

San Jose Sharks

Melanee is right in the middle of finals week, so even though I found her a HIGH DEF link to the game so that she could watch along on her computer, she said, "that's ok, mom, I'll just read about it on your blog."  SOOOOOOO, even though it's almost MID NIGHT, I think I will take a few minutes to blog about the game tonight.....I didn't give the outcome away in the blog title....but if you look at the pictures, it will save you A LOT of reading----

The Sharks WON!
The Sharks won the first round of the playoffs.  They knocked the Los Angeles Kings out of the playoffs, sent them golfing, they got to do the hand shake at center ice, the Kings can go home, because it is all over for them.  They played a great series, put up a tremendous battle, and scared a lot of Shark fans including my dad.....but ME, I never had any doubt...I worried a lot, I needed some Tums for my stomach, I stressed out during and after the Sharks losses, but I never gave up hope and I never thought the Sharks would lose the series!  I love the Sharks.  Even Kent Huskins!

The Sharks began the game with the first goal.  Against ANY team the first goal is BIG...but against the Kings, who are a strong defensive team with an outstanding goal tender....1st goal is almost a MUST.  And the Sharks got it tonight.  The Sharks player who looks like an accountant more than a hockey star, Kyle Wellwood, is the one who scored the first goal.  It was a beauty, too, well, not as much at Jason Demers' goal, that one was spectacular with a great pass setting it up by Joe Pavelski.  I predicted to all my Twitter friends that Pavelski would be the hero, he wasn't the game winner, but he had a heroic game!  Dany Heatley has been shooting really soft lately, like he hasn't been getting all of the puck, but tonight he shot a bullet into the net.  I thought it was the GAME WINNER, but the Kings came back and tied it up.  With less than 3 or 4 minutes left in the game, Jamie McGinn (Melanee, I think you would like him) skated across the ice and slammed a King into the wall.  The ref thought it was bad enough to give him a 5 minute penalty.  It was the scariest 5 minutes I can remember.....the Kings racked up a ton of shots, but various Shark players blocked shots and passes, scrambled all about to stop all the Kings chances.  The Sharks goalie stopped everything that came his way during the L O N G penalty kill.

In overtime, Devin Setoguchi combined with MY FAVORITE PLAYER Patrick Marleau and Joe Thornton teamed up for the GAME WINNING GOAL.  It was not picture perfect or even pretty, but it was BEAUTIFUL to me because when it went in the net, the series was OVER.  Melanee, remember that time the Sacramento Kings were on a long road trip and Kevin Martin scored a game winner and yelled "Let's Go Home"...haha....I thought of that when this game was over.....Let's Go Home.  Woo Hoo.

I am so glad there is not a game on Wednesday because I have to teach the Young Women about outdoor cooking and I'd have to miss most of the game if there would have been one.....also game 7's are even more nerve racking than any other game in a series, so I'm glad the Sharks finished tonight.  I wish they would have won more at home for the home fans who paid so much money, but a win is a win and winning is WAY BETTER than losing.

I really liked the Kings, though.  There is really nothing to hate about them or the way they play.  Their coach is annoying in his interviews, but the players really play hard and skilled....and like I've said a ton of times.....Jonathan Quick is SUPERB. Can't wait till next round.

I might type more later, but if my blog posts are TOO long Melanee skips them all together and since I wrote this for her, I really want her to read it, so I'll stop.

Good luck on the rest of your finals Melanee.

Bowling Scouts

The cub scouts went bowling last Wednesday and LOVED every second of it.

"Brad"

If you are on Twitter, there is a column on the right side where Twitter "suggests" people you may be interested in following.  Today there was one who's name was "Brad Guymon", I was so excited to "follow" him and become "friends" because Scott always says that ALL Guymon's are related.  I was thinking it could be a long lost Guymon cousin or someone who might know Scott's great granddad or someone like that , so I clicked on it and it was BRADLEY'S Twitter account!  MY Bradley.  I just don't think of him as "Brad".  His name is Bradley to me.

Benadryl

Just a suggestion....if your kid gets stung by a bee because your husband has a beehive in your backyard...and that bee sting swells way up causing pain and itching.....and the only benadryl you have in your cupboard is the tablets (adult)....even if it's a Sunday, so you don't want to go to the store for childs strength benadryl.......don't figure that since you child weighs 125 pounds he is able to take adult benadryl....because if you do give it to him....he will NOT be alert or even awake for Sacrament meeting-

More Wedding Party Pictures

Melanee and Cameron...haha

Melanee was a bridesmaid at Cameron's sister's wedding this weekend.  Cameron is still on his mission in Spain, so his family made a card board cut out of him so that he could be in the wedding photos....lol...so here they are together.

Happy Easter

It's Easter Sunday and I forgot to buy a ham.....guess we will have deviled eggs for dinner or something made from the 2 dozen hard boiled eggs Andrew dyed yesterday.  I do have a package of lunch meat, but I think it's turkey, not ham.  Guess we aren't "traditional" today.  No one got any new church clothes, either.
I still have a slight cold, my back is killing me, my washing machine is acting BAD, and I'm still extremely depressed after last night's Sharks game, so I'm just hoping to have a good day.  No school tomorrow, so that's something to look forward to.  And there is another Sharks game tomorrow, so that's ANOTHER thing to look forward to.

William will be gone next week as a counselor for an environmental camp for 6th graders out near Grass Valley.  I think he will have fun, but hope he gets in some training for track and sleeps well.  I will miss him.

Scott's bee hobby is growing.  Bradley has been stung 3 times now.  He is sitting with his toe in a bowl of baking powder paste right now.  All Scott does anymore is bee keeping.  I don't get it, but he seem happy, so I just sit back and laugh at him.  Too bad I don't like honey.

William is growing a "playoff beard" but if the Sharks continue on in the playoffs he will have the beard on prom night...and graduation.....UGLY!  He also wants to grow his hair out for the league meet and divisionals so he can look like Steve Prefontaine.  He also says he likes the way it flops around when he is running track....but it looks UGLY!

Andrew is the "Star of the Week" in his class next week.  We need to gather up photos and Andrew needs to write about himself, we better get that done today or tomorrow!!!

Next week is finals week for Melanee.  She will then be taking summer courses again for the month of May.  To qualify for financial aid for the summer session she had to take 6 units (or all they called credits)...but the two classes she registered for added up to only 5, so she is also taking a "jogging" class.  Seriously, they have a college course called "jogging" and it's seriously worth course credit.  haha.  But for an athlete, that would be a good class to help her stay in shape for next year's upcoming soccer season during a very busy month.  It will force her to take time out of her hectic schedule to run.  Good planning!

William has started the registration process for college.  It's so nice that now a days students can register online, back in the day, I had to go to the school and participate in what they called "arena registration" where I walked from table to table picking up little class cards....I'm glad William doesn't have to fly to Virginia to do THAT.  Melanee graduates in December.  It will be so cool for both of them to go to college together for a semester.  Too bad they don't need any of the same classes, wouldn't it be fun to take a class together?  Maybe "jogging" will be offered in the fall....just kidding!

Yeah, this post was really not about EASTER, but Happy Easter everyone!

Hits and Misses

San Jose Sharks vs. Los Angeles Kings
April 23, 2011

I am going to attempt a blog post like my Twitter friend  bigjonallred  his blog- Finz and Stitches He does his in a more informative, less bias style than I do.  He also includes links, stats, and other details.

Here goes:

Hits-
-Jonathan Quick.  He was AMAZING.  If he wasn't the enemy I'd LOVE this guy!  I think I do love him, but right now I can't cuz he's going around stopping my guys, my team, MY FRIENDS.  (Wait, BigJon would NEVER write about loving anyone, he doesn't include his thought straight forward like that, oh well, I do, being a writer is hard!)  Quick was the #1 star of the game, NO DOUBT.  He led the Kings by saving all but one shot thrown at him, and some were very good shots.  How the Sharks scored 12 goals off of this guy the past two games is a big mystery because tonight he looked like a BRICK WALL.  Good Job, Jonny.  (BigJon wouldnt' give a guy a nick name either, or compliment them....I wrote that to Jonny, but there is prob no chance he will ever be reading my comments.)  51 saves is a playoff record.

Nicklas Wallin (hey, I'm getting pretty good at this linking thing.)  Nic played much improved over last game, even earned himself an assist.  Even seemed "Not Lazy".  I'd still prefer Justin Braun or Kent Huskins to a Nic Wallin, but Wallin earned a few props for his play tonight.  Fans are still waiting for the game winner ability he supposedly possesses, though!

-Patrick Marleau had 9 shots tonight and one of them went in the net.  I don't always agree that the guys who score deserve the top 3 stars or should always be included in the "hits" category, this time, though, Marleau deserves the shout out.  I also have pointed out on BigJon's blog that the guys who had the most chances and didn't score from those chances shouldn't get props for missing so much, I still include Marleau here as a "hit", even though he had eight "misses" because, well, he IS my favorite player.  It was his second goal of the 2011 Stanley Cup Playoffs.

-Sharks  Power Play unit was ATROCIOUS tonight.  WOW, guys...you have an extra man on the ice, use him!  The Sharks were 0-4 on the power play tonight.

LA Kings ability to shot a goal in an empty net!  0 for 3.

-  San Jose opening entrance  (I know that is a video from 3/23/11, but that's all I could find) and introductions tonight gave me the chills...they sure LOOKED pumped up and ready for the game.

Misses-
- nhlofficials  the officials (I call them referees cuz I am a big soccer buff) were lousy.  They are lousy quite often, but tonight they missed a call or two a blind mice could have seen.  Yeah, once the Kings Drew Doughty (I call him "DOUGH - Tee", but I guess it's really pronounced "Duh ahhh T") hit a players (I would write his name, but I'm too lazy to go make another link for you) stick away right as he was about to pick it up...he did it DIRECTLY in the middle of the ice where ONE of the OFFICIALS had to have seen it, but NO call.

-  Dan Boyle Dan had been really bugging me lately.  (I guess BigJon wouldn't use a statement like that....good thing this is my blog, but I really doubt he will ever ask me to be a guest blogger if I keep using "I" and "me" statements.)  Boyle needs to look at his sweater, see that "A" and realize that he is a leader, by word, action, and his play.  He's not doing it, tonight he turned the puck over by trying to do too much and the Kings scored.  Time on ice 24:50, which is a little too much for an aging, beat up, tired guy.  He led the team in TOI.

- Ryane Clowe Yeah, this is the player I was too lazy to link up before....after he had to go retrieve his stick, I think he was mad...mad that the Kings player (too lazy again) hit it away and MAD that he got away with it, so Clowe goes on to cause a penalty himself (cross checking Dustin Brown) , putting himself in the penalty box and forcing his team to play shorthanded and without him.  Not smart for another guy who often times has a "A" on his sweater.  He served as many minutes in the penalty box as shots he took, 2.

Todd McLellan Gotta put the coach here on the miss column because he has played his "top" players into the ground (ice) by refusing to let the hitting/checking/energy line play their minutes.  And I would like to ask him why Ben Eager was a scratch and why he went with Jamie McGinn.  (are you guys really clicking on all these links???  I was finding the guys on their team web site at first, but did you notice I just linked a google image of Eager for you that time.....to show you that McGinn is cuter, therefore, maybe that's why he got the start, maybe McClellan's wife had made a suggestion based on looks and Todd went with her feminine intuition???)

-Sharks team-  The Sharks led in just about EVERY category there is, except the one that matters=SCOREBOARD.  You can't win if you don't score more goals than you allow, that's just the way it works.  Sorry Guys!

Yeah, I give up.....BigJon....your way of bloggin is much harder.

UGH!!! What a waste!

Today was Saturday.  There were no soccer games, no track meets.  Nothing to do but watch hockey.  Start off the day with the Penguins losing.  Ended the day with the Sharks losing.  Seems like a waste of a day.  I was SO excited for this night, too....the Sharks had a chance to put the Kings away, to finish them off, to end the series, to send the Kings to the golf course.  And they didn't do it.  I wont say that they "Blew it" because they played hard, they tried hard, they took 51 shots, they had a few break downs and the Kings capitalized on those break downs.  The Kings had AWESOME goal keeping, the Sharks first goalie did NOT have a good game.  He let 3 goals go in on only 4 shots (the guys on tv are now saying 5) but that is a terrible effort, a terrible percentage.  Nitty, the replacement goalie was not scored on.  Last year Niemi was the goalie stopping all of the Sharks shots, today he was the one letting them in.  Goalies in hockey are SO important.  Goalies can win games or lose games, more than any other position on the ice.  Right now I am SO mad at Niemi.  And at Jonathan Quick.  Quick stopped 51 of 52 shots.  That's incredible.  (Dany Heatley made a good save in goal when the goalie had been pulled.  Future goalie????  haha, NAH.)

At least the goal scorer for the Sharks was MY FAVORITE PLAYER, Patrick Marleau.  Wallin got an assist so I guess I can't rag on him here tonight, but he was on the ice failing to do his job on one of the goals.   And DAN BOYLE, he drove me NUTS tonight, he is NOT having a good series.  Is he too old, is he trying too hard, is he injured, what is wrong with this guy???

***oh, yeah, and the SJ power play S T U N K!  The refs missed a bunch of calls...A BUNCH....but the way the power play was playing, maybe those calls wouldn't have even helped.

Being a sports fan can be so rewarding, but it is also probably one of the most stressful hobbies around.

Well, at least we get to watch another game Monday.  GO SHARKS!!!!

4 x 400 Relay

This time William ran the 3rd leg of the relay.  He has done the first second and third this year.  He likes to run the second leg the best.  The 4 boys who ran the race are the 4 best 400 runners at PV.  Steven is a sophomore, so in league meets, he runs on the JV team.  The 4 x 400 relay is the "highlight" of a track meet.  It is the last race of the meet and often times it determines the winner of the meet (if the scores are close).  The race involves SPRINTING around the track....THAT is a LONG sprint.  It is an exciting race.
Yesterdays track meet was set up in sort of a two part track meet.  It began at 1:00 with the "open events".  At around 5:00 the "invitational" part of the meet began.  William had races at 3:10 and 8:20.  I wanted to watch the whole meet, but I had to pick up Andrew from a friend's house in the middle of it....that's ok, the bleachers were very uncomfortable, so it was good to get up and move around.  1 to 9 does make for a very long day.  At one point, I turned to Bradley and said, "wow, track is not as exciting as hockey!"  Bradley completely agreed.  But track IS a fun sport to watch.  There is so much going on.  The pole vault was interesting.  I watched a lot of long jump.  The discus, the high jump, and even the shot put were things to watch between running events.  I saw a lot of hurdlers biff it big time.  I just sat there and people watched for HOURS.  Of course, the best races are the ones with your own child running, so I especially LOVED William's events.  Here are some photos from the relay-William about to get the baton.....notice the guy in the purple--he ran the 400 individual race earlier in the evening and his time was only 48 seconds.  Split times are hard to determine on relays, but from when William got the baton until he passed the baton his time was 54 seconds.....the kid in the purple...WOW....he ALMOST caught William

but William sped up and ran into the second lane to hold him off.
William's relay team won their heat, but came in 4th in the meet after all the heats ran.  William's team got their fastest time of the season and were the top team of the teams from their division.  The only teams to beat them were from Nevada, Sacramento, and Fresno.
If you look at this picture (the hugging one)...William and his teammates are SO happy to win, with such a spectacular effort.  And after the race William saw the guy  (right about when I snapped this picture) who almost caught him, and said something like, "you are the fastest guy on the PLANET" or something to that effect....
These boys were so happy.  I know I love soccer, but I think I just love watching my kids participating in ANYTHING they "play".....what a fun day!

Track Meet

Yesterday was the big track meet at Chico State.  Runners from 50 school from all over California and Nevada were there.  It was an invitational meet, meaning only the best athletes were invited.  William was in 2 events this year.  He had never been "invited" before.  He ran in the 800 and the 4 x 400 relay.  There were forty eight 800 runners.  They ran them in 3 heats.  William tied his best time this season, but came in 17th overall, NOT BAD!  I was impressed with his running, but I think he would have ran faster if he would have been in a different heat, his group ran in a huge slow bunch for the first lap.  It's hard to run in a pack!  Even harder if its a slow pack!!!!

I will write about the relay in a different post later.

Prom Tux Rental

William decided that he wanted to wear a tuxedo to the Senior Prom.  We waited for his date to pick out a dress, but she hasn't yet, so William just got a black tux with a black vest and a black bow tie.  It will match ANYTHING she picks out (I hope).  We went last week to try to pick one out, but there were way too many choices and we felt like the guy helping us wasn't really helping and was more of a slick salesman.  Today we got a nice, knowledgeable girl salesman and she really helped while a the same time letting William pick out everything.  There were about 8 different patterns/styles of vests.  WOW.  They all fit differently, had different amounts of buttons, etc.  William wanted a bow tie, but the bow ties were made out of the different vest fabrics, some were thick some were skinny, so that played into the decision of which vest to get, too.  He even had to choose between shoe styles.  He picked the black and white ones, super cool.  There were low priced tux rentals and high priced tux rentals.  The only real difference were the pants.  The pants of the cheap ones were pleated, which according to the tv show "What Not to Wear" are out of style...but for a ONE NIGHT rental, we went with the cheaper pleated pants (saved ourselves $40 bucks!)
I'm excited to see the tux on him....May 7th is Prom.

Bridesmaid

I'm sure I'll be able to find some better pictures later, but Melanee picture texted these to me today.  She was a bridesmaid at Cameron's sister Natalie's wedding reception.

Aren't they pretty?  I can't wait to see more photos!  And hear all about it.

Wallin IS Lazy

to David--- go back and watch the Kings first goal....watch Wallin FAIL to clear the puck, lazily just backhands it to the Kings....then watch the guy skate towards, then by Wallin, then Wallin lazily does NOT pressure him or follow him and he scores.  Niemi should have had it, YES, but Wallin should have not been so LAZY on his shift....if he is tired get him out of there....he can go "rest" with Landon Donovan!

Sharks beat Kings

I teased one of my "twitter friends" about taking 2 hours to write his blog posts....cuz I can write mine up in minutes....but I just write what I think, I don't do any research (except when I want a specific picture (haha...like Jonathan Quick belly down, crying), and I just write my thoughts in my head, not in perfect english, correct grammar or punctuation....and I'm sure NO ONE except maybe Melanee comes to this blog for Shark reports, so I guess I can pretty much say whatever I want.  He, on the other hand, is a sport reporter with a Sharks blog, so I guess we are different in that way!

Here goes MY recap of tonight's outstanding game.  I wore my teal colored "lucky Sharks shirt" (if you were wondering).  I missed the pregame show, but made it before puck drop.  The game was delayed because the Staples Center national anthem singer sang so slowly, haha.  Wouldn't it have been so cool if he would have been wearing a Sharks shirt or jersey......  The Kings management would have made him change, I'm sure, and NEVER ask him back, but that would have been funny.

The first period was INTENSE and no one scored.  Scoring in hockey, when done by the team you are rooting for, is SO exciting, but games like tonight can be VERY exciting even with no goal scoring.

The Sharks were doing everything well, it seemed, except score.  They often shot it right to the goalie where he could see it.  Quick is a great goalie, the way to score on him is to go around him, shot it while he is down, or hit it off of one of the people standing in front of the goal.  If you just shot it at him, he's going to snag it.   So, the second period was better with goal scoring.  First period was exciting with no scoring, second period was exciting with goal scoring.  The period ended with Sharks 3, Kings 2.  William and I were happy when the buzzer to end the period sounded because those Kings were coming on strong.  Scary!

The third period was all Sharks.  The only scary parts for Sharks fans were when the Kings had a LONG 5 on 3 power play because of stupid penalties.  They killed the penalties, though.

Patrick Marleau didn't score so I didn't get to send Melanee a "PATTY" text, but he had the most hits on the Sharks, and that is UNUSUAL.  He had some good shots, too, but Quick stopped them.  We thought that Logan Couture may have gotten injured, but he came back out and that made William and I happy.  I wish the voting for the Calder (rookie of the year) award included playoff appearances because neither of the other two contenders for that award are even IN the playoffs.  I kept yelling at the coach through my TV when the game had about 5 minutes left to play.  I wanted him to put in the 4th line.  At that point in the game, he could have gotten them some more "experience" and he could have rested the other guys who had played with just 3 lines most of last game and a lot of this game....also, it could save the "stars" from  possible intentional injury from an angry Kings team.  It took him about 4 minutes, but the coach finally put them in to finish out the game.

I think that William's favorite player Marc Edouard Vlasic is having a great series (even thought he scored a goal for the Kings tonight!).  Jason Demers goal was really awesome.  He is having a pretty good series, too.  Defense DOES win games.  With our defense being a worrisome spot all season, I think they are doing a fabulous job (except for Nichlas Wallin, is he LAZY or what?).

I can't wait to see the next game.  GO SHARKS!!!!

Hip Hop Dancing

Here is a clip of Andrew's class at the Downtown Farmer's Market performance tonight.

Top Four

My friend Gina (I almost wrote "blogging friend" but I've met her in REAL life and I was friends with her at an AOL message board before blogging, so I just consider her a friend) picked me as someone she wanted to hear the answers to the following----
(*think she picked me cuz she's trying to get me away from blogging so much about the Sharks!)
FOUR PLACES I GO -
1.  To Bradley and Andrew's school.  Since Scott's truck is in the shop, I've had to walk to the school, it's not that far, but with all my working there, volunteering there, going there for soccer practices, to pick up or drop off kids....I counted and I go there a minimum of 3 times a day, but most days it is MORE.

2.  To the church building.  With church, meetings at the church, activities at the church, cub scouts, etc.....we go to the church A LOT.  And there are MANY ways to get there from our house, but none of them are short or quick.  On Sunday, Scott went to his early morning meetings, came home, William went to his meetings, came home, we went to 1:00 church all together but Andrew forgot his talk at home....we didn't drive back, too far and we had already made so many trips that day.  We can't car pool, either, no one lives over by us.

3.  One of my favorite places to go is out to dinner with my friend Michelle.  Michelle and I used to have weekly "mommy group" where we would take the kids to the park or McDonalds and while the kids would play we would sit and chat for hours about any and everything.  Our kids are all older now and busy with all their activities, so Michelle and I started going out to dinner together to get in all our chatting and listening.  She's a really good friend.  Do any of you have the type of friend who you can tell a problem to and just talking to that person helps you feel better.  Michelle is a good friend, she takes my side and agrees with my complaints and her suggestions are always helpful, too.  I hope she likes going out to dinner with me as much as I like it.  It was funny last time we went Bradley called and asked where I was?  I said "Round Table" then he asked "what are you doing?" and I said "eating" to which he said "FOR FOUR HOURS!!!"  I looked at the time and we HAD been there for 4 hours and the employees were all cleaning up and getting ready to close.  The time flies when we are together and I don't even think we talked about everything we wanted to talk about.  We need to get together more often!!!!

4.  Well, Gina said Target, and I LOVE going to Target, but ours is kinda far away and I spend WAYYYY too much money when I go there, so I try to avoid the place.  I love to try to find bargains at Ross, too, but I don't go there A LOT.  One store I do go to tooooo much is Safeway.  It's really close to my house and we are always out of something so I run to Safeway almost every day.

FOUR SMELLS I LOVE -
1.  Cookies baking
2.  freshly mowed grass
3.  the first rain (although Bradley says that it smells like dirt...I don't think so, I like it.)
4.  Hawaii.  We have a candle called "Hawaiian Breeze" and William claims that Hawaii does NOT have a smell, but really, I've been there and IT DOES, it smells tropical, it smells like flowers, it smells good.  Right when you get off the plane, you can smell Hawaii.  Seriously.  Do I have to take William there to prove it???

FOUR FAVORITE TV SHOWS -
1.  Sharks games
2.  House (but I watch it on repeats and the computer)
3.  House Hunters/My First Home/Property Virgins (and there used to be one on the Travel channel that was even better than all these.....it was called "Vacation Home Search" or something like that.)
4.  The Mentalist (but I haven't watched it this season...is it still on???)

MOVIES -1.  My Fair Lady
2.  Meet Me in St.Louis
3.  River Dance/Lord of the Dance
4.  Dear John

FOUR RECOMMENDATIONS -
1.  Don't Criticize
2.  Don't Condemn
3.  Don't Complain
4.  You should watch the Sharks games.  SOOOOOOOO EXCITING!

FOUR PEOPLE WHO SHOULD TELL US THEIR FOURS

2.  Krisha  http://krishaskrew.blogspot.com/

for David

I don't know how or where to comment BACK to you...so here's a message for you-

Have you ever SEEN the Kings back up goalie?  He is TERRIBLE, I mean JUST ABSOLUTELY AWFUL...that's why the coach didn't pull Quick.

I think it's funny that the focus of articles written in LA papers focus on how the Kings had a meltdown...and the San Jose reporters credit how well the Sharks came back....it's all perspective!  Did you watch on Comcast or Versus?

Did you wear YOUR new "Lucky Sharks Shirt"?

I never gave up hope, I HOPED they would come back...but I didn't see how they COULD....After that HUGE comeback, I KNEW they would win in overtime, I just hoped it would be FAST because the coach didn't play the fourth line much AT ALL, I KNEW those top 9 guys must be EXHAUSTED.

Thanks for commenting, I love "talking" about the Sharks with you!

for Melanee

(and anyone else who did not watch the Sharks Un BEEE Lieve ABLE game tonight, oh, it's after mid night...I guess I should say "last night")

Back Flip

Bradley taught Andrew how to do a back flip today!  (want to watch....go ahead....beware he ALMOST falls off at the end).

Building Bee Boxes

The building continues....lots of pounding, sawing, nailing, painting.....but it's a good learning experience for the boys....right?  (look at Andrew in the background).

GREATEST come back WIN

I tried to find one of those photos of the whole team hugging and kissing and SMILING, but it seems like all the web sites now have them blocked to people like me who just want to borrow them for the moment!  Oh well, this picture is a pretty good description of what the Sharks did to the Kings tonight-

The Kings began the game with two early goals.  They were quick and easy goals made from Sharks mistakes and lousy goal keeping.  Then later in the 1st period the Kings scored another.  3-0 at the 1st break!  WoW.  What a disgrace!  Then as the second period began, the Kings scored AGAIN.  Sharks down 4-0.  It is HARD to score in hockey.  A 4-0 deficit is pretty much a "game over" score, well....it wasn't tonight!

The Sharks first goal was scored by MY FAVORITE player...yeah...PATTY.  Then the goals started coming....it was VERY exciting.  At one point it was 4-3, but the Kings extended their lead to 5-3 only 17 seconds after the Sharks scored their 3rd goal.  Before the second period ended the score was 5-5.....FIVE TO FIVE.....TIE GAME.  The Sharks scored 5 goals in 20 minutes.  AMAZING.

No one scored in the next twenty minutes, so the game went to over time.  We all guessed who we thought would score the game winner.  I said "Boyle" because I knew he felt to blame on a few of his defensive lapses on a few of the Kings goals, but I really REALLLLLY wanted it to be Patrick Marleau, my favorite player.  Bradley guessed "the top line".....(not fair, that's like getting 3 guesses).  And William guessed "Mitchell", but changed it to "Setoguchi".  I told him that Seto was having a terrible game.  I really didn't think it would be Seto.  But William thought that the Kings would be all over covering Patty and Jumbo and Seto would get it and guess what happened.......EXACTLY what William thought.  ALLLLLLL the Kings went to cover Jumbo, Patty made a SWEET pass to Setoguchi and he scored it.  The Kings goalie laid right on his face during the whole Sharks celebration.  (I'm going to go try to find a picture of THAT.)

WOW!  What a GAME!
(found one, see Jonathan Quick, the Kings goalie all sprawlled out there....hahahhhhaaa....yeah, he laid like that for MINUTES.)  poor guy

Melanee's bruise

I've been pestering melanee to send more pictures.  (She went to a Spring Formal dance and guess how many pictures she took???  ZERO!)  So, after much nagging from me via text she sent me this--
I don't know if you can tell, but she has a gigantic bruise on her arm from giving blood at a blood drive.

name this shark youngster

don't think anyone guessed the last photo, but it was a joke anyway, this one is real.  Who is the kid in red pants???

Lucky Shirt Confusion

There is a Sharks game tonight and I don't know what shirt to wear.  I have my new black "lucky Sharks shirt" with the 3rd logo, which they are wearing this playoffs (at home)....they alternate uniforms are known as their "black armor"...haha....they lost last time I wore my "black armor" t shirt....I've worn it 3 times and they've lost 2 of those games, so I'm beginning to think that it is not a "lucky Sharks shirt"...I'm leery to wear it today.

I wore my Sidney Crosby shirt last week for the Penguins game and the Penguins lost....so I don't think I want to wear that on a Sharks game day.

Last year I had a teal "lucky Sharks shirt".  I still have it, but when they didn't make it to the Stanley Cup finals, I thought the luck had worn off.  I've worn it A LOT this year with minimal success, and it is getting VERYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY worn, faded, and old.

I also have a lucky Sharks shirt which is my Montreal Canadiens t shirt.  It was so lucky that I wouldn't even WASH it when they won.  I DID wash it last time they lost while I wore it, and I haven't worn it since, so I am thinking of all my lucky shirts, maybe this Canadiens shirt is by far my "luckiest"....I'm wearing it today.  GO SHARKS!!!!!

New Hobby

Scott has a new interest...bee keeping.  I know NOTHING about beekeeping, so I can't really blog too much about it, but Scott wanted me to take pictures of last night's family home evening where he and the boys built and painted a bee box.

Scott hasn't been stung YET, but both Bradley and Andrew have.  OUCH.  Scott has these wild beliefs that he is going to make a lot of money with this new hobby.  Like enough to send Bradley and Andrew to college!  LOL.  I'll keep you all updated!

Soup

I ate cream of celery soup yesterday because we were out of cream of asparagas...and just let me say....they are NOT the same!  Not E V E N close.

Also, Target brand chicken and stars are not as good as Campbells!

What type of canned soup do you like?

Sick Kiddo

Bradley didn't feel well this morning, but we forced him to get up and go to school....thinking he was faking it....but when I went more morning recess, he looked horrible, a look he could NOT fake.  He complained about seeing spots and having places in his vision that were blind spots or where he couldn't see.....he also had a stomach ache....to me they were signs of a migraine, but I think it may have just been a headache and extreme tiredness from a busy weekend.  On Friday and Saturday Bradley was at a Boy Scout Camporee.  He was up late Friday and didn't sleep well in his tent with other boys on a hard ground.  He woke up early, had a busy day out in the sun, and didn't get home until 11 pm.  He also had some kind of nasty rash like hives.  On Sunday we had a pretty busy day with all the normal church activities and then visiting friends afterwards.  Bradley was up late again last night because he went out with Scott to participate in Scott's new hobby of bees, capturing bees, something with bees, that has to be done at night because the bees are less active.  Anyway, YES, Bradley did get stung and he was up too late for a school night.....so I let him come home from school, I gave him some Ibuprofen, and he has laid on the couch ever since.

Yosmite

Yosemite came up twice today!

Andrew had to give a talk in Primary at church today.  In his talk he told about the events leading up to the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ.  One of the sentences that he had on his paper included the phrase "Garden of Gethsemane".  When he got to the Gethsemane part he COULD NOT say the word, even when we were practicing it this morning.   He tried.  We teased him this morning that it said "Yosemite" but he didn't believe us.  While he was struggling with the word DURING the talk, I called out from where I was sitting with my 5 year olds "Yosemite", he looked up and laughed and could not stop laughing, he was embarrassed by this time, but still could not say the word, so he just said "Yosemite".  It was funny (don't know if I described it "funny" enough, but if you were here you would have gotten a kick out of it).

Then-
Tonight we went over to our friends house.  We have never been to their new house so we looked it up on our GPS.  Andrew held the GPS as we drove and told Scott where and when to turn.  At one point he said, "turn at Yosemite Doctor".  WHAT?????  I looked at him.  Scott looked at him.  I took the GPS from him and it said "Yosemite Dr."  Dr...like DRIVE...haha.....yeah, the school is failing us....he should know the abbreviation for drive....or maybe I should have taught him that by now.  I guess my younger kids have never had to address an envelope before.  (Andrew DOES know how to address an E mail, though.)

Institute Graduate

Melanee, Dax, and others graduated from Institute tonight.  I wonder if that means that they are done for the rest of the semester???  I wonder if they never have to go back???  I wonder what that diploma and plaque say???  Melanee was really excited and happy to share this picture with me.  I think she looks very beautiful in it!!!  Dax and her both look great (and HAPPY).  I just burned my finger making William and Andrew quesidillas, so I cant type much more right now...but I am very proud of Melanee for YET ANOTHER ACCOMPLISHMENT!!!!  She has grown so much while away at college.  She is a TRUE success!!!!  I am amazed at all she does and has done.  Good Job Melanee!!!!

*** for those of you who don't know what Institute is----it is a place where college students can go to learn more about the gospel in an educational setting.  Students can sign up for classes such as "the Book of Mormon", "Prophets", "Old Testament", "New Testament", and I think there are a few others.  They meet just like a college course.  Some schools even accept the units earner in institute as course credit.  At Melanee's school Institute has a building right on campus.  Other colleges, like Chico State, have Institute buildings near by.  Students feel welcome at the Institute buildings and can go there for other things than just institute classes.  Activities are held there and students can go to socialize.  Melanee took Institute classes every semester and earned her graduation certificate in just 3 years.  That's pretty amazing if you take into account that she has also taken FULL course loads in her regular studies, played soccer, coached the high school teams, worked for the athletic department, served on the Executive Council student government, is a RA for the housing department, served in all her various callings at church, is in the ward choir, and has participated in all the social activities the school has to offer like intramural, dances, movie nights, service projects, etc etc etc....she is so busy.  She has a testimony that her  Institute classes have been some of the most important classes she has taken.  She has learned so much and met so many great people at Institute.  I am happy that she is happy!!!!!
(now I need to go put my finger in water, ouch!)

Newest Shark Baby Contest

Guess who this is?

(hint    *It's NOT Kent Huskins!)

Send the Dads to LA

The Sharks lost tonight.  They played awful.  Their shots were blocked, their passes were bad, their intensity was NOT there, they skated slowly.....last time they played like that, the "dad's trip" got them back on track.  Bring in the dads.  Let them travel and stay with their boys down in LA.  What a great idea?!?!??!!!!

I usually feel very depressed after a Sharks loss, but tonight I have a good attitude (considering the Sharks were walloped, that good attitude is a surprise, even to me!)  The Sharks only need to win 16 of 28 games to be able to hold up the Stanley Cup.  They are NOT going to win 16 in a row.  No one expects them to.  Yeah, the Kings have injuries/suspensions/scrubs to deal with amongst their players, but they aren't a "bad" hockey team.  They ARE in the playoffs.  They have a good defense and a good goalie.  They now have confidence.  It's going to be a close series.  I still think the Sharks will win.  Go Sharks.  Play better next game.  Play like you want to win.  Play like you think you CAN win.  Play like your pay checks are earned.  Jumbo Joe, don't fiddle around with the puck.  Coach, don't jumble the lines mid game.  Clowe and Eager stop taking penalties.  Replace Wallin with Huskins.  Someone play the standing in the opposing goalies face role.  I want something to cheer about.  GO SHARKS!

Childhood Memory

Was at the thrift store today with William and saw this ---It's a pachinco (hey dad, how do you spell that word???) machine!

Do you know what that is???  We had one in our garage growing up...it was awesome and fun and we made up all kinds of games to play on it......ours was SO COOL, you could plug it in and it would light up.  You could get "jackpots" and marbles would come rushing out.  Sometimes marbles would get stuck.  We could open up the back.  We could play on this machine for hours (well maybe not HOURS, but I still have fond memories of our old pachinco machine).  This one isn't EXACTLY the same as ours, but pretty close.  It didn't even have marbles and it was priced at $75.00 so I wonder how much ours would have been worth if my dad would have kept it......although, I wouldn't want to sell it even for $75 bucks, I'd love to play it again!!!!  Or let my kids mess around with it.  SO MUCH FUN!!!

4/15/11

the other series(s)

No one was home for a big chunk of tonight so I watched some of the other hockey games going on in the NHL playoffs.  I was rooting for the Blackhawks to beat the Canucks in their series, I even wore my Blackhawks shirt today, but things aren't looking very positive for them...they are now down 2-0, oops!  Come on Toews (which is oddly pronounced Tays) come on mullet (Kane) beat the Twins!

I am also rooting for the Penguins to win the East.....and I realllllllly want a Sidney Crosby come back.  In fact, I want him to rapell down the scoreboard to center ice in full gear and uniform and be announced in the starting line up right then.....not have it leaked out in the morning skate or in some press release.  Wouldn't that be AWESOME.  Gotta LOVE Sid the Kid!!!!  He's got a super clean shaven face, though, right now, so I think if he was planning on playing he'd have the dreaded playoff beard going...or maybe, since he can only really grow something that looks like a poor man's stache.....I don't know, but I can hope for a reappearance soon, can't I???

I like the Coyotes, Flyers, and Canadiens because they have better uniforms than their competitors....haha...how's that for a way to pick a team???  I watched 24/7 so I feel like I know the Capitals, Ovechkin is funny/exciting, plus I and Twitter friends with some Capitals fans, so GO CAPS!  I root against the Ducks, ALWAYS.  I don't like anyone on the Bruins, Rangers, or Sabres.  So I guess my picks (who I want to win, not who I think will win) are-

Sharks
Blackhawks
Predators
Coyotes

Penguins
Capitals
Flyers
Montreal

I want the Stanley Cup Finals to be the Sharks vs. the Penguins with Sidney back in the line up, but I want the Sharks to WIN!

additional funny

***forgot to add about the shepherd's pie meal.....I am facebook friends with two of our missionaries moms.  But not with the missionary who asked for the Shepherds pie's mom...(we have 4 Elders in our ward).....so I asked him what her name was and I found her on Facebook.  I sent her a friend request and a note telling her who I was and that I wanted her recipe, so that her son would enjoy it the most.  She never accepted my friend request, which I thought was very rude.  When he came over I told him that she didn't accept my request.  He said he didn't even know she had facebook...was SHOCKED that she had Facebook.  Said he REALLY didn't think that she would have a facebook.  So we looked up the lady I found (SAME name as his mom, from Utah, too) but it WAS NOT her!  LOL.  No wonder that lady I tried to friendship didn't reply!!!!  She probably had no clue WHAT I was talking about!!!!!  (It was a really UGLY, MEAN looking old lady, he really laughed that I could think that it was his mom.)

The Shepherd's Pie

Scott asked the missionaries what they would like for dinner.  He probably shouldn't have because I am not a very good cook and when one of the missionaries said "Shepherds Pie" I didn't know how to make it.  So, I did what anyone would do when in need of advice, I posted a question on my Facebook wall.  I asked my Facebook Friends how to make Shepherd's pie.  I got the most responses I think I have ever gotten to any question or comment I've ever posted, but none of them really helped because everyone makes it differently.....but the next day my friend Krisha brought me a package of seasoning mix to make authentic English Shepherd's pie.  She told me to follow the directions exactly and I should have a very good dinner.  Only problem, the seasoning mix said "serves 4" and 10 people would be eating dinner.  So I called Krisha's mother in law, who gave Krisha the seasoning mix and asked her where she bought it.  She tried to give me one of hers, but I told her I'd go get some if she told me where the store was located.  (It's in the Garden Walk Mall for any of you Chico residents wanting to make Shepherds pie).  It's a TINY little store specializing in stuff from England.  The little lady who works there even has a thick English accent.  The food "section" of the store is along a wall the size of my couch...haha....and there was only one display box of the seasoning mix, I bought 4 packages, thinking that I would need 3 to  make dinner, and 1 to replace Krishas.  I thought about buying the other 2 in case it was good, then I wouldn't have to go back to downtown and pay for parking.  (Richard just walked in the door and I told him I was blogging about his mom and his wife...haha.)  But I didn't buy the last two packages because they cost $3.50 and I thought that was A LOT of $$$.  I went to the counter and asked the lady if she had ever made it....that started a LONG conversation with her telling me ALL about Shepherd's Pie, it's origins, how she was taught to make it, extras I could add, and on and on and on.....but there was someone behind me in line, so the conversation ended after quite a few minutes.  The store was EMPTY the whole time I was in there until the second customer came in....and guess what she was ALSO buying- the same Shepherd's Pie seasoning.  Now the box was empty, store SOLD OUT...haha...the stuff MUST be good.

So I went to Safeway to pick up the rest of the ingredients.  I got carrots, peas (my kids hate peas), real potatoes (I usually make instant mashed potatoes), the recipe called for mince, so I asked the butcher if mince was hamburger, but he didn't know.  HAHA.  I bought hamburger.  Then went to the produce guy, telling him the butcher couldn't help me maybe he could...he said, "yes, mince is any minced meat...like hamburger".  Then he picked me out a BEAUTIFUL onion.  I bought a second, but when I was cutting his smelled and cut so much better, should have had him pick me out both, didn't know that there was a science to picking out onions.  I also bought cheese to go on top.  Went home to make it and realized that I never got my 9 x 13 casserole dish back after Lance's funeral...oh well.  I followed the recipe like Krisha told me, added a few things like Janis and the lady at the English store told me, added a few more like my friend Kim in Alturas told me, made enough potatoes, like my other friend Kim from Utah suggested.  Was going to beat the potatoes with my hand mixer, but the mixer QUIT right in the middle of the job....and even flicked mashed potatoes ALL over my lucky Sharks shirt that I needed to wear during the game.  So I stopped and did a load of wash...then ran across the street to borrow a potato masher from the little old lady who loves us (should have invited her over for dinner!!!!!) then had William hand mash the potatoes, I forgot to SEASON them....oops!  William also grated the cheese.  Bradley and Andrew set the table.  And the missionaries arrived RIGHT as we were cleaning up the house to make it look SOMEWHAT presentable.  I used paper plates so that I didn't have much clean up after the meal, great idea!  I will do that EVERY time.  I love having the missionaries over (And Levi, too).  I don't know if the food turned out well or not.  I liked it.  The kids DIDN'T.  They scooped the mashed potatoes with the cheese off the top of the casserole and just ate that.  The missionary who requested the shepherds pie ate a bunch, the others not so much.  Scott has a special seasoning called "slap yo momma" or something like that with all kinds of spices.  He puts it on EVERYTHING.  Ewww.  But he got that out, so I'm thinking that the food didn't have enough flavor for him, but I think everyone put his special seasoning on their food, so I don't know if I should take that to mean anything or not.  I made 3 casserole dishes full of it and only the bottom meat/veggie part of one is left, so I will take that as they liked it!

My Sharks shirt was clean and dry in time for the game.  The missionaries left just before the puck drop!  The Sharks won....it was a great evening.
