Fish Story (this one is true)
Melanee's game
*ok, what's MATT doing in the "girls" Locker Room?Bob Bradley
Oh, back to the hiring, (rehiring?) of senior Bradley.....this wasn't supposed to be a Bornstein or Chivas post.
I think he is good for the job. He is American.....and what other American has more experience. I do like Kinnear, though, since he is my age, is from Fremont, and played on the boys u19 Fremont traveling team when I was on the girls team, so I can claim that I sorta know him. I also know John Boyle, the President of the San Jose Earthquakes.....he was on that same boys team as Kinnear.....except Kinnear went to Kennedy and Doyle went to Washington, I believe, while I went to American. I wonder if Houston was doing better this year would Kinnear look like a better coach.
It used to really bug me that Michael Bradley was the coach's son, but he is a good player, so I think he has earned his spot.......now wouldn't it be HILARIOUS if Jonathan Bornstein was ALSO his son (somehow)...now if that was the truth and was ever found out by the press they would go CRAZY with the favoritism/nepotism stories! haha (I can picture the stories now---NO WONDER Bornstein GOT SO MUCH PLAYING TIME!)
I've seen a bunch of funny Twitter comments about Bob Bradley today, but haven't taken the time to see what real newspaper or magazine columist have to say about it, but I bet they will have nothing but nice things to say if they want access to interviews and that sort of thing in the future....BUT if someone else had been hired I'm sure they would have done their best to SLAM poor Bob.
I just wish Bob would get a better wardrobe, the sweats are probably very comfy, but not very classy, AT ALL. I don't even wear grey sweat pants and I'm a SLOB. He wears them TO WORK e'ry day!
1st Practice
If you were wondering, no, I didn't make dinner tonight......it definitely time to BREAK OUT the crockpot!
New Cleats
So we spent our Saturday driving to Sacramento. You see, we have a Honda which gets good gas mileage and we have a GPS, so we knew it would be a worthwhile trip, NO PROBLEM! (or so we thought).....
We left town about 1:00. Scott took Bradley and Andrew fishing, so it was only William and I on a little adventure together. It was a fun ride down to Sacramento. The day was overcast and cloudy, so it wasn't hot at all (Like it usually is in August). We didn't have any traffic problems or car trouble or anything. The GPS gave us 2 choices when we typed in soccer stores. One was "Soccer Locker" and the other was "Extreme Soccer". About 4 years ago I had been to "Soccer Locker" with Melanee. We loved the store, with a little old man who talked to everyone, helpful employees, wonderful specials, and tons of stuff in stock. One of William's teammates had recently bought his cleats at Extreme Soccer, so we knew that would probably be a good option. We had been to a store called "Soccer Etc" or something like that a few weeks ago when we went to the temple, so when we picked "Soccer Locker" and then arrived there, we were surprised to see that it was "Soccer Etc". We went in anyway. It wasn't the friendly Soccer Locker. The employees stood behind the counter chatting away with each other. The young girl working the shoe section was NOT knowledgeable about ANYTHING and she stayed in the back for LONNNNGGGGGG periods of time. William did find a pair of purple "Fredy Montero" cleats that he did like, but NO ONE helped us, the service was SO BAD, and William wasn't as sure as I would have liked him to be......so we decided to leave them and go check out "Extreme Soccer". According to the GPS it was only 4 miles away. We took off, but in Sacramento 4 miles takes TIME. There are numerous stop lights and STOP and go traffic the whole way. With a little (meaning LOT) of stress, we made it to our destination according to the GPS, but there was NO "Extreme Soccer" in that strip mall. (The stress was caused by the traffic, my sense of direction (William yelling "right" while I was turning what I thought was "right" but it was actually LEFT.), and the increasing stress of knowing that Soccer Locker closed at 5 o'clock and we weren't going to make it back there if we didn't find anything at Extreme Soccer. We call Extreme Soccer (from here on out it's going to be abbreviated ES) and say, "We are here, where are you." The nice lady on the phone tells us that they've moved and she gave us the new address.....which we were going to type into the GPS, but the first thing the GPS asks is your city, which we don't know because when you are in "Sacramento" you are not actually IN Sacramento and you can go from Folsom to Fair Oaks to Roseville to Ranch Cordova to Citrus Heights to Highlands to Roseville to Rocklin without even switching roads. So we didn't know what city we were in or what city ES was in. So we remember that the nice lady on the phone said they were near Wal Mart and only 5 minutes away from where we were, so we type in Wal Mart. We find the nearest one and guess what? it is now a Home Depot....and there was no ES store to be found. We call them back and ask for directions. They tell us a few names of roads....we take them but end up going in a CIRCLE, not finding it AGAIN. We call them back ask what city they are in and type that into the GPS. We drive for WAY more than 5 minutes and DO find a Wal Mart sign. We cross 4 lanes of TRAFFIC and finally reach our destination to find a VERY small ES with a very, very insignificant amount of stock on hand! UGH. But when we go in we find a very helpful staff. William proceeds to try on and go through all the cleats in the $50- $60 dollar range. He doesn't fall in LOVE with any of them. I even had him try on the $99 Copas, but he thought their toes was too pointy. He tried on a few of them again and decided on the Predators.
Earlier in the day we had called Melanee to ask her for some shopping advice and she said "Anything Puma or Umbro, but don't get Predators. I CAN NOT STAND PREDATORS". I even Twittered Stuart Holden and he said, "Anything NIKE"....of course he said that, he's sponsored by Nike. I liked the Predators, they look cool, he got the ones in the San Jose Earthquake color, and the price was RIGHT! We also picked up some Nike socks and some "approved" shin guards. The time was now 5:50, ES closed at 6. We sat down in the car and William started having a little buyers remorse. I didn't drive away. We called Scott to see if he'd be mad if we came back empty handed. He didn't answer. We called Melanee to find out her reason behind her "Don't get PREDATORS" statement. She answered. She said, "People who wear Predators are jerks". But by this time it is reallllllly close to closing time at ES. Melanee put her friend Nelson on the phone to help with the decision...he said that Melanee's dumb and that Predators are good, get them! William decided he doesn't care if only jerks wear predators, and we drove away. I don't know how he even knows what kind of cleats Jonathan Spector wears but William said that "Jonathan Spector wears Predators and he's not a jerk". He was happy with his purchase!William wore them today at practice. When he got home I asked them how they felt. He said, "Only the bottoms and tops of my feet hurt".
Hopefully they will wear in!!!
On the way home we stopped for dinner and while walking in, William turned to me and said, "Don't do anything embarrassing." Do you think I'll ever take him out again??!???!! (I hope so.)
It was a great day. I loved spending time with William. He's a fun kid. When we were talking I told him that he should bring his drivers license next time (to help out with all that driving) and he said, "NEXT TIME! When are we ever going to do this again?" And he's right. And it made me a little sad.

Pleasant Valley Soccer Varsity Soccer
William has been trying out for the high school soccer team for the past 3 or 4 weeks. I didn't really want to blog about it because I didn't want to JINX him and I didn't want to have to say something here if he didn't make it.
William played football his first two years of high school. He ran on the cross country team when he was a Junior. Now that he is a senior he is playing soccer. What a multi talented, multi sport athlete!
His coach posted a list of players who would make it if he made cuts last week on his classroom window last week. William was on that list, but he still had to work hard this week in practice. Today the coach was handing out the uniforms, so the kids who got one knew they made the team. He handed out 17 uniforms and told the rest of the players they had another week to try to earn one of the last 5 spot on the roster.
William picked #2. His favorite USMNT player is Jonathan Spector, who also wears #2 now. William has been playing right side defender, Jonathan Spector's position, so it's kind of fitting. His birthday is on the 17th and #17 was still available when he was picking, but he decided against it because it is Melanee's #.
I had him put on both of his shirts for some blog pictures. #2 looks great on him!
He's so happy and I'm so happy for him.

Game Tomorrow

Melanee's team's first game is tomorrow night. Her school's web site is fairly basic, with no exciting new pictures or anything past the most basic of information. But Melanee is mentioned in the pre game article on the Radford website. Read it here:

Thirsty Much?
I guess Scott was THIRSTY yesterday....haha....I went out to dinner with my friend (THANKS Michelle!) last night and when I came home I found that Scott had been shopping. He didn't buy any food...he bought- 2 lemonades, a Sunny Delight, a Fruit punch, and Orange Juice. He must have been REALLLLLLY thirsty!
I guess I shouldn't deprive my family of the basic necessity of thirst quenchers!

Day Off
But I had already covered my bases and got a sub for me at work, so I had a DAY OFF (something I don't get very often). Now it is 2:30 and the kids should be walking in the door any second and NOTHING really got accomplished today....UNLESS you count the cleaning out of our junk drawer or "the drawer", not to be confused with the "drawer next to the drawer", haha. Look at it- I also was able to watch the Manchester United game in the middle of the afternoon with no interruptions. It was nice. They won and THEY ARE GOOD. (Either that or Newcastle is BAD!) I sort of like having a day off, our check book doesn't, but I do!

U.S. vs. Brazil friendly
Kinda disappointing game, in relation to how much I wanted it to be exciting.
I did cheer OUTLOUD once, but that goal was called back! The rest of the game I sorta sat still, a little mad at the US style of play. Then Brazil scored their first goal. And I KNEW that EVERYONE would be blaming it on Jonathan Bornstein. It did LOOK like it was his guy who scored and it did look like he should have given more effort to get his head on the ball. It did look like he got pushed out of the way like a skinny rag doll, but in actuality, it was NOT his fault ALONE. The #11 guy Bedoya shouldn't have let the cross get crossed. Bedoya's effort was half effort at most, just putting his foot up. And since the ball was coming down THAT side of the field, where was #2 Jonathan Spector? Really, where was he? And if you watch the replay again, watch it and wonder why Tim Howard didn't come out and just snag the cross. He could have even stepped forward and punched it away. But, NO, he just stood there WATCHING the shot, watching it go passed him. He didn't even move an INCH, it was very similar to the shot taken in the World Cup that froze him. So, blame Jonny B if you want, but I'm not going to. And SOME may blame him for the second goal also.......I couldn't tell from the replays or the angles from the cameras, but was it Jonny B holding the guy ONSIDE, allowing him to score??? If it was, that stinks, but that goal was also one that Tim Howard failed to stop. He's the goalie, he can use hands, just run out there and pounce on the ball!
I did NOT like the way ESPN covered the opening ceremonies or whatever they are called with the walking out onto the field and national anthems. The cameras were 85% of the time just panning the stands, showing us weird fans cheering and singing. And the post game shots were JUST AS BAD, showing us for more than 85% of the time a close up on Bob Bradley wandering the sidelines and the field. I WANT TO SEE THE PLAYERS. I could care less about the fans and one second of Bob Bradley is long ENOUGH. The first second was a shot of him SMILING. WHY? I ask, why? Why was he so happy? His team just gave a dismal effort. He may be losing his job. His team failed to score. UGH!
I was not impressed with Landon Donovan. He could have scored in the first few minutes of the game....but he fell, possibly flopped (hoping for a PK), instead of shooting the DANG ball. Then he ran to the ref, explaining his case, ummmm...that DOES NOT work, when is he going to learn that?
Jozy dribbles too long. Michael Bradley did quite of few passes to Brazil. Sacha tried really hard, but maybe too hard, he looked like a chicken with it's head cut off, running around aimlessly, but I sure could tell that he was TRYING. Buddle failed to impress. He's 29, he's not going to be around in 4 years, why waste our time with his half hearted efforts. If Findley has SOOOOO MUCH speed, why doesn't he use it to chase the ball when the full backs are just playing around with it, stalling? Bedoya bugged me the most. I know he is also young, but if he was in there to impress some European teams, he should have been playing a lot better. Edu did OK. Bocanegra, Goodsen, Gomez...OK. But why was Omar a starter, he has only practiced with the National team for a few minutes. Trial by fire, I guess. If a player if a good soccer player, they should be able to play well any time, any where. Feilhaber also ran around everywhere, but not in a constructive manner. The defense, which includes Bornstein, didn't ever steal the ball, ever. All they did was back track, wait, and try to throw up a foot when Brazil finally tried to make a cross or a shot. Not good strategy. Not fun soccer to watch. SOOOOO many times Spector could have stepped forward and attempted to cut off a pass, but instead he just let the passes go. All the guys who played in the middle seemed to just let their guys go hoping for an offsides call or a missed shot. Bad defense today. BAD. But seriously, the USA didn't score, so NO ONE can blame the loss on the defense. The US barely even took any shots. They either dribbled the ball right to the feet of the Brazil defenders or they did a wayward pass. VERY few shots. Can't score if you don't shoot. Can't win if you don't score. So U.S. lost. Soccer is a team sport, so the whole team lost, except Cherundolo, no one can blame it on him, he didn't even get into the game. (Lucky for him.) I read that he had fitness issues, what, a guy on the United States World Cup team let himself get out of shape in the span of a mere few weeks????
The U.S.A. back up goalie, Guzan, played well. He made some stops. Brazil missed some shots. It could have been a much more lopsided score! (I'm glad it wasn't.)
