(I used this picture because it is SO funny! You know how people get baptized and then change into dry clothes...sometimes they come out with wet hair...sometimes the women take forever trying to get ready to come back out while everyone is patiently waiting....well, Sarah came out like THIS, hahaha---with her hair up, wrapped in this white towel, and kept it that way the whole rest of the evening.)

Sarah's Baptism
I have to go Visiting Teaching in a second, but I thought I'd do a quick write about last night's baptism of one of my favorite friends, Sarah. We have a family in our ward who just started coming to church on their own. In fact, THEY called the bishop to have him send over the missionaries or someone to teach their family. When they first came to church, I was subbing in primary and their kids came in and were SO cute, so well behaved, and I could tell they were so special. That was about a year ago. I thought they were just visiting our ward. They were from Utah. Scott became friends with the parents easily. Scott just talks to EVERYONE. And we found out that we have a lot in common with each other. It was fun to have them over for dinner and to go to their house to watch basketball or go over to the Chelson's house for game night or family home evening. Levi, the husband, was baptized a few months ago and their 8 year old son was baptized last month...well, yesterday Sarah had her baptism day. When Levi was baptized Scott gave a talk and he related duck hunting to the Holy Ghost. On that day, I told Sarah that I could talk at her baptism and relate basketball to baptism......well, she remembered that and asked me to give a talk. She said that I could talk about anything I wanted and that I could take however long I wanted. I prepared a talk. But I didn't READ it to the congregation.....I just said what was in my heart and what I was inspired to say.... I think it went well because afterwards lots of people hugged me and complimented me. I really admire Sarah and realllllllllllllllly love having her friendship in my life. Even though she was born when I was in high school, I hope to someday grow up to be like her. She is beautiful, smart, talented, a great mom, a great friend, and a very spiritual and influential person. Everyone wants to be her friend. Especially ME! (Her husband is working on Enloe hospital, when the job is done they are moving back to Utah, I will miss them! I know after the last Guymon family reunion I vowed NEVER to go back to Utah, but I will go if I can visit them!)

the Beach

Just in case Melanee "forgets" or "refuses" to take any pictures I found this on the Internet to show where she is at today.....Charleston, South Carolina at the beach. (my dad did say that there is a hurricane or some kind of storm back east, so lets hope the weather is nice and everyone is having a great time.)

South Carolina State University - SC State Soccer Team Opens 2009 Campaign with 3-0 Win
I was able to take this off the SCSU web site and share it here with the click of the mouse.....you can read it if you want but remember this is home crowd writing, favoring the home team....they make is sound like SCSU had 27 shots to SVU's 2....that just sounds ridiculous...must be a typo...haha....

Game Results

Melanee's team had their very first game of the season tonight and she called me as soon as it was over....I was waiting by the computer waiting to see if the South Carolina State web site would post the results, but Melanee's call came first. She reported that they lost 3-0, but she said that they all played well and it wasn't a disastrous loss, it was one they could hold their heads up high and say---hey, we are a pretty good team. Their opponents were an NCAA division I team. That means they can offer athletes things like full ride scholarships, better facilities, better coaches, trainers, uniforms, teammates, play in a 20,000 seat state of the art stadium, etc..... I looked the roster up on the Internet and I read about all the players and their claims to fame. I saw that a few of the players were 4 time all league selections, some were ODP participants, some were All State players, they had players from 4 different countries around the world, and tons more honors, so they had a little bit of an advantage coming into the game. The write up on the web site after the game said that there were 300 fans in the stands. That's a big crowd for a pre season, non league women's soccer game. Melanee said that it was a good game. She sounded happy. Last year when they played a NCAA division I school, they lost 11-0. It looks like it is going to be a good season.
1st game tonight
Melanee's team has their first soccer game tonight. They are playing South Carolina State in South Carolina at 7:00 (which is 4:00 here). Then they get to stay in South Carolina and go to the beach tomorrow. South Carolina state is a NCAA division 1 school. I'll post results when I hear them!!! I'm so excited for her.

the house I grew up in
When we were in the Bay Area we drove through Fremont. We made a quick detour to my old house. It looks really similar to how I remember it. The street is a lot more cracked. The bushes in front of Kenny's window are way too high. The front lawn looks the same (dead in places). The mail box didn't used to go into the garage (but that's a good idea). The paper boy still leaves the paper out on the sidewalk.
It's funny that they have a Honda and a Suburban (like I do now).

Presents
Scott and the boys just came home baring gifts for my birthday....They were "wrapped" in Wal Mart bags. I got hearing aid batteries, some car motor oil, and a new lawn chair. The lawn chair is really something our family needs because when we were camping we had just 3 and everyone wanted a chair or little boys wanted to sit in my lap, which is NOT comfortable (because they are not "little" boys). A fourth chair will come in very handy!
The drive to the Bay Area
Scott always worries when we go to the Bay Area...he thinks the place is EVIL or something. He especially worries about the car breaking down on the way there or back. So when we decided to go he said that we should drive the Jeep. It sounded like fun. I remember a talk in church Theresa Wright gave a while back about patriarchal order and how the husband can be inspired to give direction for his family to lead them....so I was thinking that the Honda would be a better ride---you know, the AIR CONDITIONING, the good gas mileage, the windows roll up, it has a trunk, it locks.....anyway, the Jeep was the car that Scott suggested and we followed his command and took the Jeep. It has a roof, it has doors, it also comes apart, so it can be completely TOPLESS.....that's how we drove it. Wind in our hair, fun times, RIGHT? Well, not really.
My first complaint about the 4+ hour ride in the Jeep was that we couldn't really talk to each other. The wind BLOWING viciously, the loud roar of the engine, the other cars and large truck zipping past are all VERY loud. I thought it would be fun to spend time in the car with a 16 year old son...(I've read about Gina and Missty's talks with their sons while in the car)...but this occasion was not one where we could here one another AT ALL. We couldn't even hear the RADIO, seriously...and that car has extra special speakers mounted in the back for extra boom and to enhance your musical experience. Well, on the highway...going LESS THAN 70, you can't hear it.
About the "going less than 70", which is my next complaint!----this Jeep is NOT a highway car. Interstate 5 is a freeway where the speed limit is 70 miles per hour. We did not get a speeding ticket. The Jeep does not, will not, cannot go over 65...and 65 is when the gas pedal is FLOORED...the comfortable max is about 58 MPH. Frustrating when trucks are passing us.....but we were safer, right, because we were going slower.
My next complaint is a big one- my hair. I put my hair into a pony tail before we left. I even hair sprayed it. HA. Do you think it stayed in the pony tail? No, it did not. Hair was EVERYWHERE. And did you know that a pony tail HURTS when it whips you in the face repeatedly?!?!?! And why did our hair start to feel all greasy after being in the Jeep so long? was it the smog, you know, pollutants in our hair? yuck.
Want some more complaints (even though we really had fun)? I GOT SUN BURNED. yes, ME. Yes, I did. Me, dark skinned, never burns, Diane. Well, that sort of makes sense. I don't like the heat, so I stay inside all summer. My skin is not used to the sun. We drove, top off, for 5 hours. Not smart. Did we apply sun screen before we left? Nah, don't like the greasy feel, or when it gets into my eyes.....plus Gray said we wouldn't get sun burned! It's his fault!!! When we got to our seats at Candlestick....we were directly in the sun from the time we sat down until the time the sun went behind that ugly hill. Then on Sunday morning, we had another 4 hour drive with the top off...so a lot of sun in a short period of time.
Another complaint.....the Jeep, with no top is CCCCCCCCCCCCCOOOOOOOOOOOOOLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLDDDDDDDDDDD in San Francisco. San Francisco weather IS NOT Chico weather....it gets COLD there. Actually, the second the sun went behind a cloud (or was that smog) the temp would drop 20 degrees. And when that same sun goes down for the night ALL heat disappears completely! We had to drive at night from San Fran to Sunnyvale. The heater only heats your feet if you have the top off. You know that wind I was telling you about earlier...the one that messed our hair up and made the music sound muted.......it blows strong and hard at night in the Bay Area when you are in a roofless car. And it is COLD at 7:00 in the morning in the Bay Area in a roofless car, you should have seen the good bumps on William's legs!
I think I've listed the most bothersome complaints...but there is another one---Why do Jeeps have 10 gallon gas tanks? They should be bigger so we don't have to stop to fill up so often!
I'll try to post pictures soon. I wish I would have got some sunburn pictures, too. I think the sun made William blonder, too.

Bejeweled
There is this game I play on Facebook called Bejeweled. It's a game of luck and a little skill, but more luck than skill. On the right side of the screen there is always a leaderboard. It lists your high score in relation to your friends high score. I'm usually second after Betty! Sometimes I am as low as 6th or 7th. My high score used to be 92,000. I can't figure out how people can get higher than that....but sometimes they do. I was playing the other night at midnight (because I had a headache.) and on my VERY FIRST TRY I scored 102,000. Bad thing is, though, that the scores reset on Tuesdays, so I don't think I was on the top of the leader board for more than a few minutes.....so I took a picture of it to share here!
It's a Happy Birthday cake (or 2)
Then I went to school. When I checked my cubby for any notes or messages, there was one in there it said, "I need to see you after recess." I was SCARED. I thought I was in trouble. I don't like messages like that. The worst thoughts come to my mind. So I didn't rush to the office. But when I was walking down the hall, Marian walked me to the office. There the office staff all gathered around and wished me a happy birthday and gave me this cake and a nice birthday card. So thoughtful. I went home and tried a piece. Yummmmm.

Niners vs. Raiders
Yesterday was one of my last free Saturdays because soccer starts soon and I will be coaching Bradley's team and I am on the board of directors....I had NOTHING on my calendar, except to wake up at 6:30 am to watch Manchester United.....that was over by 9:00....I then cleaned the house then took a break by getting on the computer. I checked Facebook and there was a message from Robin asking if anyone wanted 49er vs. Raider tickets. I asked William if he wanted to go and he got really excited. It was almost 11:00 am, the game started at 5:00 and driving to the Bay Area takes about 4 hours. Our trip was going to be even longer since we had to go to Sunnyvale first to pick up the tickets. (Thanks Sharon!!!!)
We drove from Chico, to Sunnyvale, then on to San Francisco.....I don't think I've ever heard it referred to as "sunny San Francisco" that's probably because it is covered in a huge cloud of smoggy fog....when we got under that "cloud" we couldn't see or FEEL the sun. BRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!
I like seeing Candlestick Park from the freeway...it brings back happy memories of going to the Giants vs. the Cubs games when I was a kid. I've never been to a professional football game before.
One of William's friend's favorite players is the Raider's quarterback, so I took this picture for him. (Gotta love the zoom lens.)
Our seats were upper deck row 23.....Row 3 is the very back row, you know, up against the wall. We've actually had seats like this at a Kings game and even though they would SEEM to be the worst seats in the house, at both games we could see all the action just fine. William said it was because the players are SO BIG. We had 40 yard line seats on the Raiders side of the field.
These drummers would get up on the dug out to try to get the fans excited......we think they were just pounding away randomly, because they were making a lot of noise, not much music.
Our favorite 49er quarterback was #11 Alex Smith, but I didn't get any good pictures of him. He is a very good tackler!!! On one play he creamed a BIG guy on another he clobbered a guy who had unfortunately intercepted one of his passes.
This picture can kind of show you our view and how full the stadium was yesterday. William thinks the hill next to Candlestick is ugly, but I kind of like it.
I think this pass was blocked!
Way up high in the top booth were the TV announcers, I think. This picture also shows all the Raiders in their WARM winter coats ... the guys in the coats must be done for the night. We wish we had some of those coats....by the end of the game we were COOOOOOLLLLLLLLDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD!

These flag guys ran out onto the field waving their flags after each time the Niners scored. They were older guys....it was funny when they would run through the players coming off the field, the guys would be like "get these flags out of my face" while swatting at them.
#3 was my favorite player. I think he is a rookie. He warmed up for over 3 quarters. He just kept warming up and warming up and then warming up so more....he looked so eager to get out there and play. He also looked like he was having the time of his life. When he finally got into the game with only 7 minutes left, he scored a touchdown.
This guy was both entertaining and OH SO annoying. He was one LOUD Raider fan. He stood there the whole game heckling, yelling, swearing, and just plain sounding totally belligerent. There was a big sign posted in the stadium to text the word "badfan" and section to a number. William and I probably texted that number at least 6 times each....but I never saw any one come up and talk to him. The 49ers did shut him up with their scoring, interceptions, and winning!
After this fan got a few beers in him, he became the LOUD, oBNOXIOUS, CRAZED Niner fan. (He was better though, because he didn't swear, was not threatening, and since we knew he wasn't a Raider fan, we weren't quite as frightened by his hysterics.)
OK, I wish William would get over here and write about this guy (can you see him, he is right between the r and the s in the picture.....and do you see a guy in blue by the end zone? That is one AWESOME cop. The cop chased the fan all the way to about the 30 yard line then POUNCED right on top of him. I mean, the cop was AIRBORNE. He then hand cuffed the guy and carted him quickly away. He got a standing ovation. It was BY FAR the tackle of the game (well, Alex Smith's tackle was the BEST EVER by a Quarterback) (But, this cop should SERIOUSLY be on a football team, because HE CAN TACKLE!!!)

Elder Cook

I got this picture from Melanee, who got it from Cameron's dad, who got it from one of the older couple missionaries serving at the Madrid MTC. The missionaries get to get out of the MTC once in a while and go to the park....last week Cameron (Elder Cook) and his companion talked to over 60 people. (In the picture he is the one on the left)....dont those people on the bench look really attentive at what he is saying!?!!?!! I'm glad Cameron is serving a mission. What a great experience for him. I'm sure he will do a lot of good for the people of Spain. He has a big heart.

Wil and his teammates
These guys are so funny (and pretty good soccer players, too) (except for the shot Dean had right in front of a WIDE open goal.....he kicked it with ALL HIS MIGHT and it sailed 1,000 feet into the air OVER the goal.....you know, one of those opportunities where all he needed to do was let the ball bounce off his shin guards while he stood still, but instead he belted the bladder out of the ball to make it look sensational.......it has happened to the best players, I guess it's ok that it happened to Dean.) (Later in the game he did make up for it with a well placed, calmly shot ball into the net.)
Thanks Luis for inviting William to play!!!! (How much $$$ do we owe you???) It was a fun season.

U.S. vs. Mexico
Last week I watched the United States men's national soccer team play against their enemies, Mexico. I was excited to watch it....I like to watch soccer games and my favorite players were playing---Landon Donovan and Carlos Bocanegra..... I have always liked Donovan ever since he was on the Earthquakes, I just recently started being a Carlos fan.
I read an article today, which I thoroughly enjoyed, and thought was very well written, but I disagreed with one part of the article. I didn't like that the author said that the Mexican player faked out and blew past Landon Donovan to set up the second goal.....seriously!!! I mean, was he watching the SAME GAME....yes, the dude did get past Donovan, but Landon stayed with him all the way to the goal line.....this whole play took place down the left side of the field....who is U.S.'s left defender???--- yes, it's Carlos. Where was captain Carlos, the same player who didn't challenge fast enough or strong enough and turned away on the first goal??? Where was he when the player got past Donovan? Who was supposed to be on this guy in the first place? Donovan? no, it was Carlos's man to guard....where was he? He was WATCHING....and since he wasn't helping Donovan, you'd think he'd be picking someone else up? no, he didn't guard the guy in the middle either, so when the ball bounced off the center back who came over.....it went to the 'unguarded-by-Carlos' guy in the middle and he made the game winning shot......so I am mad that the reporter would "report" that the 2nd goal was Donovan's fault! It was not! Come on reporters, have some soccer knowledge!
And I am back to having only one favorite soccer player.....yep, its Landon Donovan....I no longer like Carlos, he's a horrible player.....well, he had a horrible game last Wednesday....his passes up field went NO where, he didn't get to the passes that were passed to him, he didn't mark his guys, didn't come over and cover the middle when needed, and didn't go into challenges strong. What a loser.

Monday Soccer Final game
Here are William, Dean, and Luis posing for a picture by Cory.....I'll have to get ahold of the one Cory took, because it looks like a good one.
They lost tonight, but it was a good, close game. William scored 1 goal. The 1st goal scored by William's team was a reverse header and another goal scored by another teammate was shot from about the half way line.
The season is now over. William will probably return to his old Monday night pick up basketball games, that he has been missing while he played soccer.

5 Stake Youth Dance
Tonight Chico is hosting a 5 stake dance for the youth. There hasn't been a dance in a while. I guess there was one at the youth conference and they may have been one while William was gone at one of his camps this summer, but I haven't taken a picture of William ready for a dance for my blog in what seems like AGES....so here he is. Isn't he handsome?
I will get a good picture, even if it makes you LATE
