So I asked Melanee to send me some pictures...and she said that she put some on her Facebook....so I take that as her giving me permission to "steal" some of those, right???

My Experience Like Ginas
William played freshman football 2 years ago. He had never played organized tackle football before this. I would take him to, and pick him up from practice each day. (School hadn't started yet, it was still summer vacation.) There were 3 teams practicing...varsity, with the blue pants, blue shirts, and blue helmets with horns on them. JV- with blue pants, white shirts and plain blue helmets. And Freshman- wearing white pants, blue shirts, and white helmets. They were all dressed differently, so you could tell which group your son was in, even while driving down the road past the school. The first week of football practice, they practiced in their shorts. The second week they were given full pads and were excited to start contact drills. So, it was on the first day of "contact" drills that I drove up to practice to pick up William. I was a little early and I knew all the practices would still be going on. But as I got near the school there was an ambulance out in the middle of the field with it's lights flashing and the back doors open. I parked my car. I could tell from the uniforms that it was a freshman that was injured. As I walked toward the field I couldn't tell who it was, but I knew that William had WHITE cleats. The kid laying on the ground, I could tell from even far away, was wearing white cleats. So as I got to the people gathered around, but still not really close to the player who they were now strapping to a board, the moms and dad told me that the injured player was "Will". That was frightening, because my William was wearing white cleats and that kid was too.....but in a few seconds, which seemed like a long time, I recognized a dad that was out there next to the injured player- and he had a son named Will. And soon also I saw MY William, so the fear, worry, scared feeling, was relieved, but I still worried about that Will. He ended up having just a concussion. They did take him to the hospital, though. It was the first day of hitting, and the two kids ran towards each other and hit helmet to helmet, just like they are not supposed to.

The Kings Win! The Kings Win!
William, the priest
I wanted to write about this, but decided not to because it would be too hard to explain to people who are not members of the church.
I changed my mind again, and I AM going to write about it, because it was a big day.
I know that I can't just say that William became a priest today, without explaining it more. Priests can be different things in different religions. In our church, priests are usually the young men aged 16-18. All the different young men age groups have names. The 12-13 year olds are called the "deacons". The 14-15 year olds are the "teachers" and the 16, 17, 18 year olds are the "priests". The young women have different groups, too...like the Beehives, MiaMades, and Laurels. Anyway, in Young Men's you have to be worthy to move on to the next group because the boys have the Aaronic Priesthood, which is a sacred responsibility. The boys who don't obey the commandments, can't hold the priesthood. They wont be ordained to the office of a deacon, teacher, or priest if they are not honorable young men. (In other words, there are 17 year olds who are still deacons.)
So I hope that little explaination helps you to understand a little as to why this day was important to William and why I am a very proud mom right now.
After church, William was ordained by Scott. And immediately after we got home from church he got to go and bless and pass the sacrament to a family who couldn't make it to church today. The priesthood in action. Pretty neat.
Oklahoma
Well, I guess I jinxed poor Blake and his Oklahoma team with my last post about how wonderful he is!!!!!!!!!!!!!! They lost today. I honestly didn't think they would lose because I didn't watch the game- I went to church! I thought I had a deal with Heavenly Father that if I attended church instead of staying home to watch a sporting event he would help MY team to win. (This theory worked all throughout the Dallas Cowboys championship seasons. Everytime they played during my church hours, I would WANT to stay and watch, but I had FAITH that my team would win if I did what I knew was right, and not what I wanted to do!) My absence didn't help them today.
*too bad I deleted the song "oklahoma" off my playlist, it could be playing right now as you read this.

Blake Griffin

Since I am blogging about basketball, I thought I'd tell you who I think the Kings should draft....and if they get the first pick (they BETTER get the first pick) they BETTER pick this guy Blake Griffin! Have you seen him play? He is TOUGH! He is a balllllllllllerrrrrrrrrrrr who has been ballllllllliiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiin all season. He is the best player in college basketball right now, he is the best player entering the draft, he is the MVP of this March Madness Tournament, if he gets on the Kings he will be the BEST player on the Kings. My only worry is, he is number 23 on Oklahoma right now....if the Kings draft him, will Kevin Martin change numbers so that the Kings STAR player and newest MARQEE player and MONEY MAKER can have his choice of jersey number? Move over Kevin, there's a new kid in town.
March Madness

As most of you know I LOVE to watch basketball. I watch just about EVERY Kings game, and sometimes we watch the Thursday night games on TNT, Wed. or Fri. games on ESPN, and Sunday morning games on ABC. So, basically, I guess you could call me a basketball FAN-atic.
Well, there is no more EXCITING basketball to watch than the NC double A "March Madness" tournament. Some of the things that I LOVE about it are--- the single elimination part of it (you know, YOU LOSE- you are OUT, your season is OVER), I like that the people in the stands are standing, going CRAZY the whole entire game. They fans are dressed from head to toe in their schools colors. The cheerleaders are really watching the game and really CHEERING. The coaches genuinely CARE ABOUT their players and it shows. The players are playing with PASSION. They love the game. They love their teammates. They aren't playing for MONEY, they try hard every second they are in the game, running fast, diving for loose balls, working hard on defense, moving around to get open. There are a lot of missed shots, but it is a MUCH more exciting game. There are a lot of fast breaks and dunks. A lot of hard fouls and injuries. The scores stay pretty close, or if there is a big lead, sometimes the other team works so hard on a come back, the game is still exciting. A lot of the players and coaches have interesting life stories that the announcers tell us about. (One of my favorite parts of the Olympics are the Up Close and Personal stories). And I REALLY like that the guys on the bench are cheering, hugging, crying, and genuinely showing emotion. I LOVE it!
Scott, William, and I picked our brackets before the tournament started and of the final 4 left, 3 of them are teams I picked to be there (the other was DUKE, aren't they ALWAYS in the finals!).
So, if you want some excitement watch the Final Four games...I can almost GUARANTEE you wont be disappointed or feel like you have wasted time (like you would if you watched a Kings game!)

When Andrew was a kid
Andrew and his friend were with me at Bradley's soccer game, but when the game was over I couldn't find them. Michelle pointed them out to me a second later, they were over on a big brick park sign. When I got Andrew and Michael, Andrew said something really funny for a 7 year old. "Remember when I used to play on that sign when I was a kid." At the same time Michael and I both said, "You still ARE a kid." To which he responded, "I meant like way back when I was 4 or 5."
haha
yeah....WAY back then! haha.

Bradley's soccer picture
At my dad's house he has a shelf in kitchen above his desk area where there are four 5 x 7 picture frames with pictures of Melanee, William, Bradley, and Andrew in their sports uniforms. Each season on picture day I buy a 5 x7 to update the picture in the frame. It is always fun to replace the old picture, because in that frame you can look back at all the previous pictures and see how the kids have grown and changed. Well, a few years ago I discovered Costco photo developing and found out I could print my own 5 x 7 for .42 cents as opposed to the picture day people charging $6.00.....so here's Bradley this season! (Do you think I'll ever get William to pose for a track picture??????) (And I'd REALLLLLLLY like to get Melanee in her SVU uniform!)
Soccer Sharks Win
This picture looks like Bradley is doing a "high-kick", but he didn't get called for it.

This picture shows Bradley dribbling.
Bradley fought for the ball wit a lot of effort today. He has, in past games, gotten very frustrated, but never did today.
Bradley's team (what am I saying, it's MY team, I am the coach) WON today! They put it all together and played a GREAT game. It was their first win! The score was 5-1. The kids passed, went for lose balls, kicked hard, and most importantly PLAYED POSITIONS. It was almost amazing turn around from previous weeks final scores. What a fun game it was for all of them (and me). They were all smiling. Bradley scored 2 goals. He was so happy after his goals. And his best friend Kolby also scored a goal. Kolby faked out 2 guys to get to the goal. And Theo, our best defender, played forward, and scored 2 goals. What an impressive win. Last week is our last game of the season. I'm so glad they got this win. I hope my coaching has been teaching them something about soccer. WOW!

Mini Canyon
Today during Andrew's soccer practice Bradley and I went for a walk. We discovered a trail and found this ditch, or channel, or overflow type area....it was really cool looking, and Bradley really wanted to go down there, but it was pretty steep and I didn't want to be gone from Andrew's practice for very long. The beautiful spring colors in the wild flowers, green grasses, and sunshine made the walk very enjoyable.

My Dad
As everyone who reads this blog can EASILY tell, I LOVE my kids. But there is also someone else in this world who I also care about and think about every day. He is my dad. My dad just celebrated his birthday and I so I thought I should write a post about him.....My dad was born years ago, in a different time, the world was different. He has been through a lot, he has seen a lot, there is a lot we can all learn from him.
My dad is the youngest child in his family. His dad was a carpenter. I didn't really know my dad's dad, but I do have memories of his mom. When I was little, she lived in an old folks home type place in Woodland and I remember visiting her there. They raised my dad to be a good person. He has a lot of integrity. One of the things he always taught us was "the golden rule". I know there are many golden rules, but the one he taught us was to treat others how we want to be treated. Good parenting and good advice.
My dad was in the Navy when he was young. For his career, he worked at United Airlines. I know he was well liked there, because I remember a lot of people "roasting" him at his retirement party, and I also remember pilots giving him gifts when they went places. But when we were kids (I have 2 brothers, one older and one younger) we thought our dad was pretty boring on most weeknights. He came home from work, and we had to get out of HIS chair. He'd read the paper or watch the news. A lot of times he'd fall asleep in HIS chair. There was a little thumb motion that he'd give us and we KNEW to get out, there were no ifs ands or buts about it! But on weekends, our dad was FUN! He always went to our games. He never missed any, unless we had overlapping games. I can only remember one game of mine that he EVER missed-----ONE------ I also remember that he was in Alaska and it was before the day of the cell phone, and I had to wait to tell him that I scored the goal that put us into over time, and we ended up winning that game....in the State Cup Championship Qualifying matches. Anyway back to my weekend memories of my dad......there was a park near our house. It was in Union City. We would pack up ALL of our sporting equipment- the tennis rackets, the baseball gear, soccer ball, basketball, frisbee, kites, any and all gear and we'd play all the games out there. He'd pitch us batting practice, play with us for hours. I also remember helping him mow the lawn and do yard work. We had a great yard. I even remember him hopping on a pogo stick and I think he (or possibly it was Kenny) broke his nose poggoing in the back yard. Also in our back yard we played games of two square, we had a "pitch back" for baseball, hockey goals for street hockey, a garden area for digging (once a year or so we would try to dig to China), we had fruit trees, and a little patch of lawn for water games like running through the sprinklers and squirting each other. (The grass area was also used often for photo opportunities, like when we got dressed up, or were in our uniforms, etc...) My dad designed and built the deck. The best dinners were on weekends because my dad would barbecue- YUM!
And can't forget the big wheel crash up derbies us kids had in the front yard, or the 2 on 2 football with me and dad against Kenny and David, or the stick ball game we played with the foil ball or wiffle ball in the front yard.
I remember many trips to soccer games with my dad (and mom). We drove through Niles Canyon to Pleasanton, Danville, Livermore, Dublin, and San Ramon A LOT. Good Memories. My dad was my biggest fan, I think. He missed many Raiders games to watch me, so that must mean something. As Melanee began playing competitive soccer, I think she took over the spot of his favorite athlete. Sitting watching her games with my dad, I've heard him comment MANY times, that he thinks her team could beat ANY of the teams I ever played on. I'm sure she could have easily faked me out of my cleats....but I may have gotten mad and slide tackled her the next time the next time she came down the field.
We had a ping pong table in our garage. When we were really little we just watched my mom and dad play each other, but as we got taller, my dad would play us and we all got better and were able to play against him for real, but he never "LET" us beat him, which helped us to become better players. I still remember the first time I ever beat him...it was a few years ago here in Chico. It took me nearly 3o years to beat him. But he probably hadn't played in 30 years, either. My brothers and I would roller skate around the ping pong table in the winter and on rainy days. We'd play roller derby and try to have marathons or try to break the guiness book of worlds record of times around the table. haha. We got an air hockey table one year for Christmas and that was down in the garage, too. There was also a pachinco machine----that was a lot of fun. Sometimes we'd set up a race track on the ping pong table and play that for weeks on end.
My dad would also take us on bike rides. One place we liked to go was to the "bike trail". When we had a lot of time to ride we'd go to Coyote Hills. My mom even had a bike. We had to ride slower when she went along with us.
The coolest place in the house to watch tv, do homework, talk on the phone, or even take a shower was my parents room. It was WAY down the hall from the kitchen and the front room, so it was a good place to go.
My dad ALWAYS woke up EARLY....REALLLLLLLY early. REALLLLLLLLLY, REALLLLLLLLLLY early...you get the idea. And on weekends, if we would get up before him it was always fun to "wake up dad".....now that I am a grown up, I think that was really mean of us, but as kids, it was fun! Every Sunday he made waffles. The best waffles EVER. Every Sunday! The first waffle was the "tester" but it never tasted bad, I always wanted that one. We would fight over it, so he came up with an idea of breaking tooth picks, who ever picked the biggest one would get the 1st one, middle sized toothpick the 2nd one, etc.... He'd always go last. What a great dad! My mom would sometimes heat up the syrup for us.
My dad had strange eating habits. He was a "meat and potato" type of guy. He didn't eat things like pizza, tacos, casseroles.... On those days my mom would make my dad a steak or hamburger or something he liked in our little toaster type small oven. When we went out to pizza he'd order spaghetti, or sometimes he wouldnt even go with us. When we went to a hamburger place like Carls Jr. or Burger King he would always order his hamburger PLAIN, nothing on it!
He taught us all to drive. I still remember the lesson to learn to drive the stick shift, we went to an empty parking lot in Union City. I also remember when I was REALLY young our FAVORITE place to go with dad was when he took a load to the dump- because----he'd let us drive the car on that dirt road leading up to the dump. (We sat one at a time on his lap for a little while, thinking we were driving......SO fun.)
My dad is the one who taught me how to hold my pencil correctly and how to write neatly. My mom was the one who stayed up all night typing my papers on a typewriter, but I still remember the LENGTHY handwriting lessons in about 4th grade with my dad.
I could go on and on and on, but for now, those were a few of the memories I had of my dad and my old house and my childhood.
My dad was and still is a great parent. (This was fun, I may write new memory posts in the future.) I love you dad.

Monday Fun Activity

Way too often for Family Home Evening we will have the family WORK on something, like last week we planted the garden and a few weeks back we painted the front room, so this week we wanted to do something FUN. We still didn't have any ideas when we got in the car to go pick up Bradley. We still didn't have any ideas after we picked him up....then on our way back to our house we remembered the creek---and the ROPE SWING. So that's what we did for fun and there were a lot of smiles, so I think it was a success.3/22/09
lost teeth
Tonight we were all just sitting in the front room and Bradley pulled out a tooth. He had never even talked about it being loose. Then, not more than 5 minutes later he pulled out another one. REALLY! It was weird because he never even complained about having any loose teeth.......but I looked in his mouth and new teeth are already coming in, so they must have been ready to come out. Neither of the other kids ever lost 2 teeth in 1 day. (Wonder how much the tooth fairy will bring for 2 teeth!)

Birthday Candles
I hope this video works, because it is always funny when the birthday person can't blow out all of the candles. Andrew was there, waiting, eager to help. It's very cute!
