--Link-- Sim on Ditko's Mr. A. and Sim's Mr. C-minus

Frequent DITKOMANIA contributor Dave Sim (who also apparently did a comic book of his own for a while) talks about the recently reprinted MR. A. (still available from Robin Snyder) in the 26th episode of CerebusTV, as well as his currently for sale piece of original art featuring "Mr. C-minus", a hero for the less ambitious slackers among us (watch the video to see Sim playing the role of a slacker, complete with backwards baseball cap and hoodie).

Unusual Tales - One Way Trip

"Unusual Tales", a series presenting Steve Ditko's comics from 1957 to 1959 that are in the public domain.

From Charlton's MYSTERIES OF UNEXPLORED WORLDS #10 [1958] comes the 5-page "One Way Trip".

It's an odd little fantasy story that starts with a man getting news of an almost certainly fatal diagnosis from a  doctor, and follows him from there.  It's a very good example of the body language in Ditko's art, look at the final panel compared to the earlier panels of the lead character.  Also some great close-ups of the eyes.

Unusual Tales - Journey To Paradise

"Unusual Tales", a series presenting Steve Ditko's comics from 1957 to 1959 that are in the public domain.

"Journey To Paradise" is a 5-page story from Charlton's OUT OF THIS WORLD #7 [1958], the story of a teacher named Adam Marsh who doesn't believe in the biblical story of Eden but still longs for a simpler time that the paradise of the story represents.  Then he happens upon a time machine built by a dying inventor.  Hm, guy named Adam, longs for an Eden he doesn't believe in, time machine... wonder where that's going.

A bit of a text heavy story, but some interesting bits of business in the text.  The story gives Ditko a wide variety of things to draw, and he he excels at them all.  The old inventor is especially well rendered.

Unusual Tales - The Fiery Feud

"Unusual Tales", a series presenting Steve Ditko's comics from 1957 to 1959 that are in the public domain.

"The Fiery Feud" is a 6-page story from Charlton's ROCKY LANE'S BLACK JACK #24 [1958], with more tales of the noble equine, this time his encounter with Jim Mulvey who tries to corral and break him.

Cute little story with some really good images, I'd especially point out a few of the silent panels throughout, and that first panel of page 5.

Unusual Tales - The Strange Machine

"Unusual Tales", a series presenting Steve Ditko's comics from 1957 to 1959 that are in the public domain.

From Charlton's STRANGE SUSPENSE STORIES #40 [1959] comes the 7-page time travel story "The Strange Machine".

This story about a brilliant inventor who ruins his life feeling sorry for himself because he feels cheated out of an old lost family fortune has a similar O. Henry style structure and twist to one of Ditko's first stories for Marvel a few years earlier, "There'll Be Some Changes Made".  Still, a well told version of the story, and really good art by Ditko, as you'll see.  The 7-page length gives Ditko a bit more room to play with than is usual for these stories, and he uses it nicely with a few silent panels and some clever juxtapositions between panels

New Ditko - DITKOMANIA #79

Now available, DITKOMANIA #79, the May 2010 issues of the bi-monthly Ditko fanzine.  Focus of this issue is "Ditko's Women", with a new Dave Sim cover featuring Miss Eerie and articles on topics like Betty Brant, Gwen Stacy, Liberty Belle and Fera (from STATIC).  Of special note, Squirrel Girl creator Will Murray has a detailed article on the character introduced in one of Ditko's last major Marvel comics.  Also some good fan art in this issue featuring Liberty Belle and The Veiled Lady (from Ditko's 160-Page Package).  A nice look at several eras of Ditko's work.

Unusual Tales - Where Is Kubar?

"Unusual Tales", a series presenting Steve Ditko's comics from 1957 to 1959 that are in the public domain.

From Charlton's MYSTERIES OF UNEXPLORED WORLDS #6 [1957] comes the 5-page "Where Is Kubar?".

It's an amusing little story about an attempt to construct a bridge in India running into trouble from some local superstition.  Ditko does a really good job with the characters, and there are a lot of really good visual tricks to make the story interesting.  Definitely an above average story for work of this era.

Unusual Tales - Who Knows?

"Unusual Tales", a series presenting Steve Ditko's comics from 1957 to 1959 that are in the public domain.

From Charlton's TALES OF THE MYSTERIOUS TRAVELER #10 [1958] comes the 5-page "Who Knows?".

The Traveler talks briefly about the increasing skepticism of the modern age, and how people reject old legends, leading to a retelling of the classic tale of the cursed ghost ship the Flying Dutchman, and an ending that doesn't really explain much.

As usual, Ditko does a great job of bringing the maritime based fantasy to life, this time combined with the usual background images of the Traveler.  Page 2 is especially strong for Ditko's work of this time, for the haunted look in the captain's face.
