Les Batteries – "Noisy Champs" (AYAA – DT 0486) 1986

This Heat's influence,or,connections with the French underground seems to be somewhat larger then expected,as here we find The Heats erstwhile drummer and singer, Mr Charles Hayward, hooking up with another couple of  other drummer boys,....namely French 'rock in opposition' bloke Guigou Chenevier, and some geezer called Rick Brown.....yes THEE Rick Brown.......nah! I haven't heard of him either! But Rick probably hasn't heard of us too so we're quits!?
Three Drummers Drumming,as it doesn't say in the famed Christmas carol, but three, yes,THREE,drummers does indeed apply here! Can you imagine the creative arguments in a band with three drummers? As Gary Glitter and Adam Ant can testify, two drummers max in a band, or there's gonna be trouble. In fact it was Drummer trouble that ended Adam and The Ants and burdened the world with Adam's much maligned Solo career. With Glitter, the obvious problem was, funnily enough, actually Glitter himself(a fine example of a singer that hangs out with musicians).
Drummers are famously the guys who do hang around with musicians. The guys who die mysteriously, choke 'ON' vomit, aren't needed outside of touring, and are forever trying to impose their daft ideas on the rest of the group; like John Bonham's 'Moby Dick', or Rat Scabies' "Stab yor Back", as if trying, accidentally of course, to move that hilarious joke well into the realms of observational comedy.
Y'see, Drummers actually do think they are musicians, and like the stupid son of the family, are always trying to make the audience look at them and see what they're doing. This usually involves hitting the drums as loud as possible, and taking copious amounts of drugs....as in, more than you....look maw I'm Dancin' !
However much the average drummer harbors sparkling  thoughts of their own genius within their considerable ego's ;one has to concede that all this drummer hate certainly does NOT apply to the great Charles Haywood, or his vocal sound-a-like Bobby Wyatt, who are indeed the granddaddies of the Rock In Opposition fad of the late seventies, otherwise known as Prog Rock under any other name.
So, what we expect are three drummers busting their balls trying to Out-paradiddle each other, and to impress each other with their rudimentary talents on 'other' instruments.
It's kinda Punk without the Punk, and This Heat without the Heat, which leaves us with.... 'This'?
Haywoods vocals are as vulnerable and Wyatt-esque as This Heat and Camberwell Now, which adds much needed identity to the dreary Drum-Off. So when Haywood didn't turn up for the follow up albums, they just ended up sounding like Camberwell Now but without the tunes.
An obvious, but bold Idea, balancing precariously on the round shoulders of the limited tonal range of a well tuned drum kit.

Camberwell Now - "Live Basel, Kulturwerkstatt Kaserne 16/06/1984" (Bootleg)

A great, crystal clear, radio performance recording from Basel in Switzerland, in front of a small but ,eventually, enthusiastic audience. Lots of amusing stage banter, and a great set from this ignored This Heat spin off;.......as has been said, its more of a Matching Mole/Soft Machine relationship to their former band, than an actual continuation. There's also an interesting interview tacked on, which gives a overview of Stephen Rickard's 'Machine', which was basically a cassette version of the Mellotron, and a precursor to the sampler.

A rather tinny recording of pre or post(?) Gareth williams This Heat in action at Actionspace in 1981.The audience noise is conspicuously silent, except for the occasional distant shout in the murk where all the bass frequencies were exiled to.

This Heat - "Live at the Prince Of Wales Conference Centre,London, 20/101979" (Bootleg)

Continuing the theme of post-punk-avant-prog, brings forth the kings of said made-up sub-genre;....That's right, more live This Heat, with a decent quality bootleg recording of a gig sometime in 1979, including a rare capturing of obscure Heat number ., "The Rough and the Smooth".....worth it for that alone.Despite some irreverent audience members chit-chatting in the presence of art history, its a rather good recording for 1979.
No doubt that the truly awful Prince Of Wales would think its all a pile of totale shite.
Apart from that I have nothing more to add....its 'This Heat' innit?

Camberwell Now - "Live @ Tegan Tonen Frestival, Amsterdam 08/05/1986"

At last a high quality live recording of post This Heat avant-prog combo Camberwell Now. As captured by VPRO Radio at the Tegen Tonen Festival in Amsterdam in 1986.
This band never really did themselves justice on vinyl, and were better heard in a live situation. A slightly mellower and less abrasive offspring of This Heat. Most notable for ex-Heat sound engineer Stephen Rickard's mellotron inspired cassette-based 'sampler' invention.

This Is Not This Heat - "Live @u Cent Quatre, Paris- 15/03/2017"

I often complain about groups reforming to earn a bit of dough, and in the process tarnishing a legend that was best left unblemished.
This is not the case with 'This Is Not This Heat' however, who have respected their former groups legacy by recognising that certain members are no longer with us, and therefore this is something quite different. A kind of tribute, and reinvention of their past group rather than a nostalgia trip for cash.Hence the title of the project ensures that we know that this is definitely not 'This Heat'. A lot of other groups who reform around one or less members should use that epithet, like This is Not Dr Feelgood, or This is Not Bucks Fizz.
This Heat's legend has grown immeasurably in the 21st century, and inevitably the demand for some kind of product was bound to result in some kind of reincarnation by the remaining members, although the late Gareth Williams' replacement Trefor Goronwy is absent (i suppose this carries on the welsh connection still further?).
The two Charles's, Hayward and Bullen, are augmented by a number of 'guests' to plough through the This Heat back catalogue, including the traditional improvisation, and sound as if they had never left us.
All recorded in the highest quality you've ever heard these songs captured live in (The first time ever in the case of "24 Track loop"/Repeat!).Fantastic.
I love this group and I have no problem with them trying to get some meagre recompense for their monumental legacy. They can do anything they want to do, and more to the point they are more than capable of doing it, which is also rare in these delicate cases.

This Heat - " Live at the Clarendon Hotel London 01/08/1980" (Bootleg)

This Heat and Young Marble Giants for two quid!!?....and a late bar too!
Sadly, this is the last This Heat live boot I have. Its an audience recording of the first half of the set from that seething hotbed of avant garde rock, The Clarendon Hotel in London, from arguably Rocks' greatest year 1980?.....it says its from the Clarendon anyway, although I can hear only decidedly non-english voices chit-chatting in between the songs......but good stuff anyway, although a tad heavy on the 'Hiss';but alas..."you can't record Avant-Rock in Dobly" (David St. Hubbins' wife, Spinal Tap out-take 1982)

THis Heat - "Live at the Collegiate Theatre, London 30/06/1978" (Bootleg)

A rare glimpse at early This Heat captured in the raw acoustics of the Collegiate Theatre, supporting The Pop Group I gather.
Sounds like a very sparse audience hiding amongst the tape hiss, but you get a glimpse of the more experimental side of early This Heat, before the more song based material crept in. A very early flowering of the progressive side of the Post-Punk era.
While the record shop racks were full of lp's by The Vibrators, The Drones, and other similar second wave new wave punkers. The real new wave were surfacing in places like this; and they weren't playing Rock music either.

This Heat - "Live at King's College, London 28th May 1982" (Bootleg)

What would you like for Christmas boys and girls?.......well, I know what I would like, MORE LIVE THIS HEAT! please Santa!?
So here we have a rather good quality soundboard recording from the final This Heat gig, at King's College London.(ps, that isn't the boys from the group on the cover by the way!)
This one ranks up with the best recordings of the many other live This Heat bootlegs we have on this blog......click HERE to find the other live recordings nestling among the studio albums.
Charles Hayward: "Always find this version of the band difficult to listen to, the quartet lost the thread, and we basically fell apart as soon as we started playing the month of gigs. Death in June were horrible but we didn’t know that until we played the gig."
I have ran out of superlatives on how fantastic This Heat were, and still are. The remaining members played a few shows as "This is Not This Heat" earlier this year, which I gather were rather well received.
For me the album "Deceit" is by far the greatest Cold War album ever made, and a great sing-a-long to boot.

This Heat - "Live in Zurich 15.04.82" (Live Bootleg) 1982

Sorry about the lack of posts of late,we're just getting over the death of a close family member,so not really into preparing files etc. But,i had managed to edit this before that hammer blow. How about more live This Heat?
Dug up from his extensive live tape library, Shiva Descending has found a This Heat tape I haven't heard before! This is another from the last tour, sans Gareth Williams, in 1982. This time in Zurich, and probably broadcast on radio, which would explain the FM bit in the title. Certainly sounds like it was recorded from the radio, for it be of a fairly high standard of stereo fidelity. The set list is exactly the same as the Hamburg gig from the previous week in 1982.
The highlights include an extended 'Twilight Furniture' with improvised section, and maybe the best version of 'Greenfingers'? Dunno if I want any This Heat played at my funeral?Such a fine body of work deserves to be played in full. Although Camberwell Now's “Know How” makes the death list short list, followed by,maybe kiddie Fiddler, Roy Harper's, “When an Old Cricketer Leaves The Crease”,then two tunes that sum me up nicely,"(People laugh at me)cuz I like Weird Music" by the Instant Automatons, and to finish on a lighter note,"Part-Time Punks" by the TV Personalities". But now I've gotta compile four tunes for Sanny's funeral......that ain't an easy task, choosing from the near perfect canon's of PiL(mark one), Joy Division, and The Fall? (How 'bout 'Death Disco' ,'Dead Souls' and 'Bill is dead'?) Please feel free to leave your own funeral lists in the comments section. When This Heat died I don't think music ever recovered? 1982/3 being a water shed epoch for the end of the mid to late twentieth century renaissance.(i.e. it was all downhill from there, still descending today)
I digress, ladies and gentlemen,I give you the fantastic This Heat in Zurich, 1982.

Lifetones ‎– "For A Reason" (Tone Of Life Records ‎– LTM 001) 1983

After This Heat, Charles Bullen, as Lifetones, went in the inexplicable, and safe direction , of White Reggae!? He didn't though, to my knowledge grow dreads, wear over sized wooly hats, and start talking like a native Jamaican; “Ev'ry t'ing Irie mon?” No, 'ev'ry t'ing is not fucking Irie' , especially in the unbelievably depressing cult of the white Rasta. One of the worst examples of the human flocking instinct, aka 'the Hive Mind'.

Having not heard this record for nigh on 30 years, I was expecting to hate its 'right on' guts, but, astonishingly, I worryingly found myself enjoying it?

It's a strange thing indeed, an amalgam of Elevator reggae-lite, sterile dub effects, and Bullen's multi-tracked nasal whine. Its reggae, but not as we know it; I can see this providing background muzak for some bourgeois fondue soirée, as much as a small gathering of white dreads, passing the funny cigarettes from 'de left hand side' in a south London squat. It's lowest common denominator Reggae.

Charles, can I call you Charles? Has only just released another solo project, some thirty years after the first. I wager it ain't white reggae-lite, thank Christ. He does however have a guest appearance list as long as your arm, alongside many production credits; bordering on the prolific even?

This record couldn't be further away from This Heat, who were innovative and ferocious experimentalists. Lifetones just follows the rules inside the musical strait jacket of Reggae's limited scope; but sometimes we just want an unchallenging listen, and relax......'No Problem mon'.......jesus, see w'happen to I'n'I?

Normal service will resume on the next post......and I promise.....No fucking Reggae!

Gareth Williams & Mary Currie ‎– "Flaming Tunes" (self-released cassette) 1985

Gareth Williams only made one solo album after the Heat, and it's a good one;in fact the best of any ex-This Heater. Collaborating with Mary Currie, its an understated post-electronic type of lo-fi urban folk. Thankfully only a few Indian Music influences appear,a couple of Tablas and some twangy sounds, but largely an eclectic mix of upright piano's, violins, and nursery rhyme-like songs.

I can imagine Looby Lou (how did you spell that?) dancing to these songs while Andy Pandy and Teddy are playing with their hobby Horse in the woods. Some of them would not have been out of place sung by Gabriel the Toad and Madeleine the Ragdoll in Bagpuss. There is a knowing innocence about these tunes that make them sort of …..creepy? This is a very desirable quality in music, that can only be achieved by the 'Non-Musician', which Gareth W certainly was. A great work of misty, unsentimental, childhood invoking art,by a greatly missed artist.

Charles Hayward ‎– "Survive The Gesture" (Ink Records ‎– INK 31) 1987

Charles Hayward, drummer and voice of This Heat and Camberwell Now, makes solo album that sounds not unlike his previous groups, except Quiet Sun of course! Mainly because they were built around his idiosyncratic drumming style, his identifiable vocals, unless you mistake him for a more in yer face Robert Wyatt, and his unimpeachable politics.
I especially like the damning critique of humanity of the first track “Make Believe”,which is full of profound couplets concerning the short sighted stupidity of human 'progress'; a “We're Burning our houses to keep ourselves warm”, kind of thing.
The rest of the album keeps on with the same style, a minimalist This Heat with everyone except Charles Hayward faded out kind of sound. All that’s left are the drums and the voice, with a few accompanying keyboards, and the odd session bassist joining in,in an understated way naturally.
I've heard a few Charles Hayward LP's,and this is the best one in my humbles.

This Heat / Albert Marcœur ‎– "Untitled" (split C-35, Tago Mago 4753) 1982

More early Heat from 1977/8, as This Heat do Can's ethnological forgery series with some bloke from Ghana, called Mario Boyer Diekuuroh. Do I detect Gamelan instruments, and various ethnic percussion devices jamming with our heroes? World music crossover is one of the worst ideas since the Sinclair C5. Never understood the appeal it has to the white middle classes of the west. Probably so they can say “I'm not Racist I like World Music”!? I'm pretty open minded (yes!?)musically,as you likely guessed, but World music/afro beat goes in the 'just don't get it' dustbin of my mind, along with: Soul music, Hip Hop ,white reggae(which Charles Bullen inexplicably stooped to after This Heat!?), and whatever category Mumford and sons are in! And I have tried to like this shit believe me! (except Mumford and Son who I could quite easily beat to death with their fucking banjo!).

At least on this cassette we are saved by the presence of This Heat to bring some sanity to the situation, and no banjo's! There are a few good moments, but don't expect it to sound like Deceit, just like some ethno jam sessions, with some passing traveller hippie they met in a pub when drunk.

The other side of this cassette has some fairly interesting modern composition avant rock crossover symphony film soundtrack, called “Deux lions au Soliel”, by some French ex-progger Albert Marcoeur. Good stuff, especially the last part which I mistook for an unknown This Heat number.

Camberwell Now ‎– "Dejaunost V Studentskem" (Nikad Robom ‎– 004) 1987

Camberwell Now were a different proposition in a live situation, where Steve Rickard's innovative analogue sampling method,"The Tape Switchboard", could be used to the max. Strangely subtle on the studio recordings, but less so on this live cassette recorded in  Ljubljana in former Yugoslavia(Now Slovenia).
The acoustics of this venue has the ambient qualities of a large steel drum,so the sound is pretty harsh, like its being played over one of those awful public announcement systems at a railway station.Very noisy.
Nevertheless, this is a rare document of live Camberwell Now,and is therefore of great interest to those with a This Heat OCD.

Camberwell Now ‎– "Greenfingers" (INK Records ‎– INK 1224) 1987

Another This Heat rehash, gives this EP it's title, and opening track. This again suffers from losing Charles Bullen's guitar melody,as best heard on the 1982 European tour bootlegs, like “live in Amsterdam”. There is one original on this record that I absolutely love, and is strangely one of my favourite songs ever!?....”Know How”,is a profound reflection on the bizarre stand off that exists between this planets (not so) secret rulers and the controlled masses. We all know whats going on,and we know that they know, and they know that we know!? Hidden in plain sight like a gorilla on a basketball court ,nobody notices he's there because they are so distracted by the game. But we know he's out there puncturing the ball, and selling it back to the referee. Just because they're out to get you, doesn't mean you're paranoid.

The simple melody harmonises perfectly with the truth of the text,to make a sad indictment of the human character....”If you knew how, you'd do it too”. Its the same trait that turns pop stars from great and talented people into Arseholes. Of course we all like to think that we wouldn't turn into the worst kind of meglamaniac given a smidgen of power;but the sad fact is 99% of us do.History has shown endless examples, from traffic wardens/extermination camp guards,to Local Politicians/Genocidal Dictators. You total fucking Arseholes! Love Jonny Zchivarsehole.

Camberwell Now – "The Ghost Trade" (Ink Records ‎– INK 19) 1986

An definite improvement on “Meridian” was Camberwell Now's debut LP, “The Ghost Trade”. Starting off with old This Heat number, “Working Nights” it begins to sound less like solo Wyatt, and more like Camberwell Now; although far inferior to This Heats version,as heard on The “Live in Amsterdam” bootleg, it misses the lead guitar melody provided by the absent Charles Bullen.

“Sitcom” sustains the standard sufficiently,to excuse the blatant disco of “Speculative Fiction”.

This fine album finishes off with the classic “Green Lantern”,and the title track, which marks some kind of a return to form.

Tracklist:

Working Nights 7:41
Sitcom 4:40
Wheat Futures 6:11
Speculative Fiction 6:09
Green Lantern 3:11
The Ghost Trade 11:11

Camberwell Now ‎– "Meridian" (Duplicate Records ‎– 0011) 1983

Camberwell Now was basically the line up of This Heat's 1982 European Tour, minus Charles Bullen. A sort of This Heat-lite,much missing Bullens guitar, and sounding more like a Robert Wyatt tribute band rather than the vicious angular unit of 1977-81. Also missed are Gareth Williams' non-musicianly contributions. He left This Heat in 81,and that was effectively the end.
Basically Charles Hayward and backing band, Camberwell released their debut recording quickly after the 'split', the maritime themed “Meridian”. A fairly staid affair, with only 'Daddy Needs a Throne' touching on the intensity of Hayward's previous groups work; but interesting nonetheless, especially if you like Robert Wyatt's solo work.

This Heat - "Nivelles" (This Is ‎– This Is 7) 1981

Interesting live improvisation recorded at Nivelles france,in 1981. featuring Gareth Williams on instant rewind Cassette player, Charles Hayward on percussion, and Charles Bullen on very understated guitar.
You can do stuff with tape that you could never imagine any digital apparatus getting anywhere near. Digital sound comes in blocks and steps, whereas analogue sound is a smooth sine wave;both have their charms and uses, and both are essential parts of sounds' future.
This first appeared on the Recommended Records quarterly in 1987,and in this form, as a bonus mini CD with the 'Out of Cold Storage' box set from 2006.
For all you completists out there, you know who you are?
