Lustmord - "Lustmørd" (Sterile Records-SR3) 1981

The step-daddy of Dark Ambient's debut release on Nigel Ayer's Sterile Records, back when Dark Ambient was still called Industrial. Now its a fully formed sub-genre,drowning in a sea of thousands of other lonely sub-genres.
This is a classic dark muddy collage full of field recordings of children playing over some sub-bass throbbing, and deadened drums. The obligatory crude electronic noise and liberal use of effects is of course present, with the expected voice samples (recordings) rising and falling beneath the surface. There are some heavily processed vocals, which at several stages sound like 'The Soup dragon' as featured in cult kiddies TV programme, "The Clangers";but here,as recorded falling into a Black Hole.(click here to see the episode where the young impressionable Zchivago learned about reproduction....its never been explained any better.)
Naturally Brian's still going strong today, probably helped by not using his real name on his earlier releases. Which miserable Industrial fan would have been attracted to the sinister ambient soundscapes of Brian Williams, or,alternatively, the same by some creepy bloke called Lustmord, with an "ø"? Even this stuff was all about marketing.......right now, I'd choose the Brian version.

SPK - " Live at the Crypt " (Sterile Records SRC4) 1981

SPK captured live in 1981, in "Information Overload Unit" mode. This is the SPK I prefer, nasty ear lancing noise, that is only equalled by Merzbow today. If your bag is distorted drumming, gut wrenching screaming, brain grinding electronics, and general Industrial Noise, then you won't find better than this.Maybe Whitehouse is a tad more unsettling, but SPK win out on the textures of the noise, and are creatively more diverse.
This is also a slightly better performance than on the previous SPK post, "The Last Attempt at Paradise" from the following year.

Released on Nigel Ayers of Nocturnal Emissions' Sterile Records, the home of many an industrial noise maker in the early 80's.

Nocturnal Emissions - "Sterile Records 1980 - 1983"

Nocturnal Emissions, slang for farting in bed is it not(actually its a scientific term for a 'Wet Dream')? Wrong, its a second generation Industrial group from the uk, active from about 1980 to the present day. Formed by Nigel Ayers and Caroline K (RIP), they were part of the cassette culture of the early eighties via their own label, Sterile Records. The early part of which one has posted here. This period was, in my opinion, Nocturnal Emissions finest moments. Lots of lo-fi distorted tape loops and crude electronics, heavily influenced, obviously,by Throbbing Gristle and Industrial Culture; based on the standard themes of Mind Control, information overload, and other Borroughsian concepts.
Industrial Music was and is theee most easy musick to create for those with no musical skill whatsoever. A couple of tape recorders, and a crap synthesizer and you're up and running. Its also pretty difficult not to make it sound good either, which is demonstrated admirably on these five releases on Sterile from 1980 to 1983. After which,Caroline K left, leaving the project as solely a Nigel Ayers solo vehicle, which continues to this very day.
Probably the best of their early works has to be "Drowning in a sea of Bliss", but they are all prime examples of how to play great non-rock music without any chords whatsoever- this is what punk rock should have sounded like from day zero.

Lustmord - " Lustmordekay " (Sterile Records Cassette SRC6) 1982

Sterile records was the home for many, so-called "Industrial" artists; giving welsh sound designer 'Lustmord' his first releases. Lustmordekay is his second release on Sterile, and is a dense sound collage, very first wave industrial, and far apart from the 'Dark Ambient' Lustmord of his later years. Its superb muddy lo-fi noise, which was probably deemed weird and creepy in 1982, but now sounds like the stuff every Henry normal makes in his bedroom, even your aunty Doreen probably has a noise project going these days!
