Various Artists – "Real Time 1: August 82" (Unlikely records) 1982

Ay Up?  That bloke (Robert Cox) what done "Felixstowe Rocks" is also the brane behind that unlikeliest of record labels otherwise known as "Unlikely Records", from...you guessed it...Felixstowe!?
The label was well known for handing out these compilations for free at gigs. Largely featuring Robert Cox in his various guises.
The catchphrase being : "You Don't Know What You'll Like Until You Hear It!"....which, in my experience isn't entirely true.
There were countless times I knew I'd like a record purely going on Artwork, and any number of those dodgy reviews in the music press from their golden era .The art of reviewing a record has long died a painful death since the birth of the internet. Like the reviews section in Mojo, which sound as retrogressive as Mojo mag is;like it came from the sixties, simplistic and very reverend. Tending to just describe the music rather that the thoughts and attitudes behind it.
But, hearing it first does help....a bit.
So in the post-truth woke conspiracy addled planet of today, hearing it again is all part of the over exposure to information that is fucking up anything with it's own mind...seemingly for good, and certainly for the Bad.
Therefore in 1982, it was necessary to get the kids to actually hear it for free; something we take for granted today. So 'Not' hearing it in the modern context i would argue has many beneficial qualities.
No-one expects the Spanish Inquisition, and no-one expects to be expected to like something one has never heard. This concept is very much part of the culture wars straight jacket we find ourselves in today. Most of the unexpected stuff from the past would have never surfaced were it not for the luck  in appearing in the pre-internet existence. Censorship, i would also argue could also have many beneficial attributes,re-creating the awe and mystery of stuff you aren't allowed to see, hear or feel. Yep, i'm arguing for censorship here, and chinese style internet controls......probably banning me in the process;but i'll take one for the team if it results in the allure of the forbidden to return, and the art world ceasing to be so fucking BORING!

Ok, rant over, and time for me to describe this great tape as if I worked for Mojo Magazine in 2024, or The NME in 1963.
This is one of those classic UK DIY compilations from the Heyday of British cassette culture. Plenty of nice tunes that could be a hit. Especially Pop-tastic being Coventry's favourite post-Jurassic period Donovan fans, the tuneful Digital Dinosaurs.
For all you cool fans of early industrial hits, there's Muslimgauze himself, assuming his early disguise as EG Oblique Graph. The late Bryn Jones and his estate, who is still....,inexplicably, around today, despite the inescapable laws of nature. These laws can obviously be bypassed using the reanimating power of ferric oxide even if he is long dead.
Another myth from the misty shores of a DIY Albion, is the very illusive Lurch, who makes a rare appearance on several of these Unlikely compilations. Ever since he appeared on the classic "Deleted Funtime" C-90 on Deleted records in 1980, i've been on the lookout of that Lurch tape; sadly to zero effect.....one can still dream I guess?
Reading back at this failed attempt to sound as twee and reverend as Mojo and  the 1960's music press, I really shouldn't have bothered.....thankfully, I failed.
Censorship will return to free our minds again., fear not; put into effect by your Woke mates who will be watching you in the emptying Pubs of Great Britain and beyond. That coupled with New Cold War paranoia will ensure the return of music and art in general to a new relevance last seen during  the art renaissance of the 20th century. Blah Blah Blah!

Muslimgauze ‎– "Jazirat-Ul-Arab" (Limited Editions ‎– LIMITED 5) 1987

Its that Dead Muslimgauze bloke again, banging on about the middle east like a musical OCD, or ,more appropriately, an IED.
Lots of repetitive over-programmed drum samples  battle out with ambient drones, and middle eastern 'found sounds.
Would make fine background music while you read the propaganda in your national newspaper justifying the illegal bombing of Syria, and how your government is rushing through more 'snoopers charters' for your own security. The French Government is now considering making 'Conspiracy Theories' illegal!?

Muslimgauze ‎– "Hajj" (Limited Editions ‎– LIMITED 4) 1986

From a similar place, musically, one can loosely connect Muslimgauze to Zoviet France via the dark tribal ethnological ambiance angle.
To call the 'late' Bryn Jones prolific is somewhat an understatement, there being around 200 albums and counting to date;over half of them posthumous. However, variety,is not a word one could apply to the vast majority of his canon.Heavily percussive blends of found sounds from middle eastern cultures, mixed in with ambient drones and electronica, make for a doomy antediluvian experience. Then there's the obsession with middle eastern politics, especially the PLO; to the leader of whom, the equally 'late' Yasser Arafat, this LP is dedicated.
As much as any normal person can sympathise with the plight of the Palestinian, and the 'Nazi-style' ghettoisation and ethnic cleansing of the westbank and Gaza by Israel; it does get a tad boring to be confronted with the same theme for over two hundred albums!?.....OK!We get it!
That said, after the recent Terror attacks in Paris, this work has a continuing relevance.

Various Artists ‎– "The Elephant Table Album" (X Tract ‎– XX 001) 1983

Companion album to "Three Minute Symphony" compiled, again, by Dave Henderson ,late of the now defunct Sounds newspaper.Full of great tracks, even the 400 Blows track is fantastic, i think they went downhill fast after this single.
Its not perfect, (which is perfection?), as The Legendary Pink Dots do only a mildly irritating version of their Syd Barrett fans play with casiotone keyboards and pots'n'pans stuff.....still made me wanna punch somebody though!
We also got a minimal Coil track which is virtually a slow TR808 solo; dare to be minimal!
SPK on the cusp of becoming total Shite, the excellent Lustmord, Portion Control transmuting into their nasty vocals phase(which i'm not too enamoured about).
To sum it all up, it has its faults, but  a classic old school Industrial compilation, and a great starting point for the Industrial virgin to catch the 80's underground In flagrante delicto! (I don't really speak Latin by the way!)

Various Artists‎– "Sudden Departure" (Recloose Organisation ‎– LOOSE 001) 1982

Classic 'Industrial' compilation on Bourbonese Qualk's own Recloose Organisation label.Featuring such classic artists as Colin Potter, Bryn Jones(E.G.Oblique Graph),and Phillip Johnson.Even Lol Coxhill makes an appearance!Rather marvellous.
The first release from Bourbonese Qualk's RecLoose Organisation label was a compilation release intended to be followed up by albums by each of the artists. the album included works by lol coxhill, eg oblique graph (muslimgauze), new 7th music, la fondation, colin potter and Bourbonese Qualk with two early pieces; " i've heard some talk" and "the women and the sun" recorded in 1981.
"One of my favorite early '80s compilation albums was "Sudden Departure" on the RecLoose label. Bladder Flask (one Richard Rupenus a.k.a. Funeral Danceparty) was featured on a few of the very best tracks, as were Bourbonese Qualk and EG Oblique Graph, who would later change names to Muslimgauze. I already love this album to pieces!" Various Artists - "The Last Supper" (Adventures in Reality ARR007) 1984

Fantastic, faultless Industrial cassette compilation, complete with fanzine, from 1984.Not a duff track on this, and a spectrum zx computer program to boot!......spectrum ZX programs themselves sounded not unlike some of the Drill'n'Bass stuff that appeared in the 90's from acts like Squarepusher and some left-field Aphex Twin.
The weakest tracks come from german group Gorilla Aktiv, but only because they are a carbon copy of early Deutsche Amerikanishe Freundschaft, but that's no bad thing 'cus by 1984 DAF were shite, and Gorilla Aktiv were excellent.
Best Track, probably the Smersh one; a distorted kind of House musick for an insane asylum.
Included with an 'Adventures in Reality' Fanzine, which was based in Coventry, and ran from 1980 to 1984.All these tracks were exclusive, and not to my knowledge released anywhere else!
Pro-printed cassette with j-card in snap case. Packaged together with a 16-page booklet, including a 3-page interview with SPK.

Satisfy yourself with the 3 sample tracks I have included below as a taster for more to come.

Muslimgauze – "Abu Nidal" (Limited Editions Records – LIMITED 6) 1987

Gulf War part Three??……is this a prediction of renewed hostilities, probably not against the "West's" new ally ,the lovely Iran this time? Will the Zionist controlled puppet government of the USA get their next ‘Pearl Harbour’/9-11 style excuse?
Its strange because after 9-11 the NATO powers seem to have swapped sides, and now seems to favour allying with the so-called CIA/Mossad offshoot called Al Qaeda,as they did in Libya and now Syria.
Anglo-American warmongering is getting as boring as reviewing these endless Muslimgauze records.
mmmmm, Abu Nidal. Terrorist or Freedom Fighter or Mossad agent?. Definitely option three, but anyone who kills innocent people is a…….wait for it…murderer. ‘Nuff said.
What?…….What does the record sound like?
Oh,I think you know what it sounds like.

Muslimgauze – "Flajelata" (Limited Editions Records – LIMITED 3) 1986

The more records Muslimgauze made the more he began to sound like Holgar Czukay and Rolf Dammers “Canaxis” LP, and “My Life In The Bush Of Ghosts” by Bryne and Eno. Except they were Clever, or Stupid, enough not to repeat themselves endlessly. This paradox never troubled the ‘great minds’ of such luminaries as Jandek, Daniel Johnston, and…er…Muslimgauze. It is generally the realm of the outsider to achieve greatness by repetition.(hang on doesn’t U2 do this? ed.)
Yes, mainstream pop acts also do this through fear of losing their much needed status. But this doesn’t concern us. The reason Jandek does it is purely through some unfathomable process going on in his mind.
This is probably the case with Bryn, muslimgauze, Jones. Always the same, but reassuringly,or disturbingly, different.
Oh,and by the way, this is a pretty good Muslimgauze record!

Muslimgauze – "Blinded Horses" (Limited Edition Records Limited2) 1985

Industrial album cover designer’s dilemma:”What shall we put on our LP cover?………A Leading Nazi?……no……..Charles Manson?…no……ah, How about that caveman of intellect Ayatollah Khomieni!!!…yes……and it fits inwith my pro-islamist politics……clever!”
I know I am flirting with Fatwa territory, but so fucking what, those intellectual minnows should read the Koran and find out what being a muslim is all about.
And Bryn Jones, a man who wasn’t a muslim, or ever went to a muslim country should have kept his big nose out of affairs that don’t concern him.Like the evil Tony ‘mass murderer’ Blair should have done. (Has any industrial artist ever put Tony Blair on the cover of their LP?)
But….again this is a very listenable Industrial ethnic LP. Hypnotic tribal tape loops, dubbed up Industrial Disco, with minimal effect laden electronics, all make for a half descent Industrial album. Good stuff, if misguided, and irritatingly subliminally soap-boxy!
