Brad Laner ‎– "Ligaments 03" (Captured Tracks ‎– CT/SP-057) 2019

The infinite possibilities of modular sound synthesis are dragged through the unpreditcable mind of Brad Laner for the third time. Reminiscent of those early electronic pioneers, this moves it on in a similar direction without resorting to cop out melodies. Edited like an action painting in sound rearranged to almost make sense, these electronic workouts  actually add something progressive to a genre that has remained virtually in stasis since the mid seventies, with a few exceptions of course,so don't shove a list in my face,or mention bloody Autechre!.....lets just celebrate.....Trump has Co-vid!

Brad Laner ‎– "Ligaments 02" (Captured Tracks ‎– CT/SP-056) 2019

Another rewiring of the ligaments in the ligature of a genre that could be, 'Modular Synthesis".
Personally the sight of wires gives me a migraine, and the cost of this new generation of Modular synths makes me wince. But, at least we have Brad Laner to do it for us.A better candidate to make sense out of this rich retiree's 21st century version of collecting butterfly's I cannot think of.
This second tape is at least far better, and nuttier, than tape one, which was in turn far better than most indulgers in this questionable pastime........and yes, the covers do look like those Industrial Records cassettes.....a tribute within a tribute?

Brad Laner ‎– "Ligaments 01" (Captured Tracks ‎– CT/SP-055) 2019

Brad Laner, the step-grandaddy of Synth Punk, among many other OUT-there musical projects too numerous to mention, is,of course, still offending the musical sensibilities of the normals to this day.
More recently Laner has taken the inevitable dive into the ever-expanding universe of modular synthesis, taking many months to record dozens of hours of live improvisations and editing them together. “Ligaments” is the result and is intended to be an ongoing series.
Sure we've all now got a room dedicated to our modular synth collections, but few people on this crumbling rock have Laner's naturally abstract insight into what makes something challenging.
You can either end up sounding like Jean Michel Jarre, or like a disintegrating alien machine.I like my Modular synth workouts to be adequately fried and burnt on at least one side. This is what these things were intended to do.Except this cassette is fried on both sides.

Earth Dies Burning ‎– "Songs From The Valley Of The Bored Teenager (1981-1984)" (Captured Tracks ‎– CT-180)

Los Angeles gave us many things;some truly terrible singer-songwriters,some really quite good singer-songwriters(manily from Canada it has to be said),recreational cocaine abuse for the common man,cop-killing,some half-decent post-punk punk groups, the Los Angeles Free Music Society(LAFMS), Captain Beefheart,and.....Synth Punk!
Starting with the very great 'Screamers',it never really caught on,but Brad Laner was there at the begining as a teenager, with Nervous Gender, and after that came 'Earth Dies Burning'.
Mr Laner has been in nearly all the greatest LA Bands, like Steaming Coils, Three Day Stubble,Severed Head In A Bag to name but a few; as well as an integral member of the LAFMS.
'The Earth Dies Burning',is certainly a fine example of how to use Technology, which is, basically, take the instruction manual and burn the fucker. And also, they did a rare example of a PiL cover version!?.."The Flowers of Romance".So that automatically makes this a fantastic record does it not?....you should be saying 'Yes Jonny'!?

Various Artists ‎– "The Emergency Cassette- Lightbulb Magazine" (Los Angeles Free Music Society, 2x C-60) 1981

A huge and insanely diverse compilation of Abstract lunacy which came with the fourth edition of LAFMS magazine 'lightbulb'.
We've even got the Meat Puppets on here, and thankfully they don't sound like the Meat Puppets from later in the eighties 'cus they were shit; they aren't here.
We got 45 Grave, future LA Goth rockers who later sounded like a Beverly hills version of X-Mal Deutschland, but contained a member with one of the best stage names ever....Dinah Cancer.Their track here is in fact a rather marvellous sonic splatter painting, disguising the goth leanings like a Dazzle Ship. They could have been great!
The Berlin School of electronic musik makes an appearance too,in the form of Herr Asmus Tietchens, which is strange for a Los Angeles comp?
Of course there's plenty of unhinged experimentation from Rick and Joe Potts,Tom Recchion, Dennis Duck and the famous Doo-Dooettes to satisfy your craving for truly unique abstract madness.

Various Artists ‎– "Blub Krad" (Los Angeles Free Music Society ‎– LAFMS 7) 1978

Blub Krad  sounded like a great name for a compilation, until I realised it was Dark Bulb backwards!
A shadier cousin to the LAFMS Lightbulb  magazine , it begins with the classic outsider punk of Half Japanese,or maybe 'Free Punk' would be a more accurate pigeon hole for this joyous noise.("The only chord I know is the one that goes from the guitar to the amp!"-Jad Fair).
It gets weirder from there with a succession of lawless musical rioting, punctuated by bizarre islands of  parody.
My personal favourite track is "I Walked With A Zombie" by The Yvonnes, a bizarre chimps tea party of competent incompetence where the chimps are given instruments instead of teapots and bananas. A kind of American "Weird Noise EP".

Various Artists ‎– "I.D. Art #2" (Los Angeles Free Music Society ‎– LAFMS #002) 1976

That Los Angeles Free Music Society (LAFMS) certainly know/knew how to put together a good abstract compilation record. This one dates from even before "Blorp essette" in 1976.
Back then the LAFMS had already deconstructed rock even before the 'Punks' had decided to destroy 'Rock' by playing....er.....Rock? Very little on here would even have been perceived as music in those ELP ruled days, even today this still has a very large capacity to annoy and frighten Mr and Mrs Henry Normal; and may even make John Q. Public angry(?). When confronted with Conceptual Art, the Hive mind can be easily confused and sent in to the defensive 'fight or flight' mode of a cornered animal.Frequently dismissing such  challenges to accepted norms as 'Rubbish'  or 'Not Art',backed up with violent urges. Its the difference between Constables' 'Haywain' and Picasso's "Weepin Woman",the difference between Craft and Art; the difference between ELP and  Smegma.

Various Artists ‎– " Blorp Essette " Volume Two (Los Angeles Free Music Society ‎– LAFMS#10/11) 1980

More Van Vliet art in 'True Mono' for guitar players!.....you can't go far wrong with those three cosy niches overlapping each like a Venn diagram of  'wot is gud'. The central sector, where all three converge, forming the all encompassing brilliance of "Blorp essette"......volume two. Not forgetting that Volume One was fantastic also.
All the usual LAFMS contributors(the Potts, Recchion,Duck,Chapman,Smegma etc.) are, one assumes, present; plus some very un-PC lo-fi Punk from The Child Molesters, with their peon to the Hillside Strangler.....not the first peon to this mythical monster, but a fine noise indeed nonetheless!
Side 2 of LP1,is dedicated to those who would want to stretch the possibilities of the guitar to this versatile instruments uncharted limits. The picks being Mr.Foon 'untrendy' piece from 1977, and Henry Kaiser's abstract vision of Gary Moore's solo from "Parisienne Walkways"......not really, but a fine example for a compare and contrast moment; that is one is brilliant and innovative, the other pure shite......I'll leave it up to you which one is which.

Various Artists ‎– "Blorp Esette Volume One" (Los Angeles Free Music Society ‎– LAFMS#05) 1977

The Iconic compilation from the abstract world of the Los Angeles Free Music Society (LAFMS),complete with faux naive  artwork by none other than Don Van Vliet; that very over-rated painter formerly known as Captain Beefheart, the very under-rated musician.
All the usual combinations of LAFMS members are here, plus an exclusive track from none other than, no not Don Van Vliet, but The Residents, from during the height of their creative summer.
It may have been 1977,but you won't find any Punk Rock on here; having said that, you won't find any Punk Rock as Punk Rock as this either. The boundaries of the definition of music are stretched like the loose elastic of Meat Loafs sweaty underpants. So much so, that when The Residents track appears, they sound like Top Ten material......which of course they should have been?

Various Artists ‎–"L.A. Mantra II" (Trance Port Tapes ‎– trance 8) 1984

Afterimage (see previous post) were on "L.A.Mantra "1, so here's "L.A.Mantra II", and there's even  another Brit influenced post punk-a-like group on here, the Abecedarians (they even got signed to Factory for a short while in '86!?)
Be not afraid, for there are many other early 80's shoebox's emptying their contents onto two cassettes, for your enjoyment,or otherwise. We got minimal synth, Minimalism, avant rock, mutant disco, ambient, modern composition, avant garde, drone, and plenty of LAFMS hangers on adding their ten cents.
All in, its a great compilation of interesting musics, equal in quality to its predecessor, but in better packaging.
(Thanks go to Carlo for this by the way.
