Three sample backgrounds for three different animation series. These projects are for 3-5 years old kids so overall style supposed to be pretty simple.

Editorial for Medved magazine
It’s about some Russian economist that deeply misses Soviet Union, hates homosexuals and hopes that gold will replace US Dollar in international financial system very soon.

Stuck
Here comes the Christmas. Well not yet but it’s getting closer and closer so do I have to draw a lot of santa-reindeers-snow-gifts stuff.
This one was done for some Hamburg advertising agency. Huuuuge format – A0…120cm wide!

Monster Family
You’ll be surprised but this one is not a personal project, it’s fully commercial artwork, which means they actually pay me for creating these ugly guys!

Parents
Editorial for GQ magazine. This material was pretty sad, was hard to illustrate it. It’s about author’s parents death and his feelings about it. It’s about loss, childhood memories and solitude.

Making-of
It’s close to 900K image. Please wait until it’s loaded.
I guess I have to give a little explanation here. There is no refining step between “flat” step 10 and “3D-like” step 11, just because there weren’t any additional steps. I just painted all the lights and shadows over the flat color. Step 12 shows the step when I switched to Corel Painter to blend all rough brushstrokes. Step 13 is color correction ( adding more blacks in shadows ) and …the signing:)

I did it!
I’ve made into Animation Mentor Showcase 2009! What can I say guys? It’s was one hell of a surprise to find myself among all these really talented and hard-working people. Comparing to their work my animation looks pretty humble but hey I am in, that’s what matters. At least for me.
Congratulations, Denis!:)

P.S. I know this orange space looks a bit empty but I had to leave some place for title and text, so…

Finished piece
I think it’s been a while since I did something that lasted more than one day. This one took me three. Not around the clock of course but three sessions of 3-4 hours for sure.
By the way, I called him Ricco.

Character design test
Usually I tend to avoid tests for my clients because I think my abilities can be easily seen from my works, but this time I decided to do it because here we are talking about feature animation project and this opportunity is so tempting that I just couldn’t resist.
The character suppose to be a nice, a little bit silly silly but still very charismatic little dictator.

Shitting on Kremlin
This one was made as editorial illustration for “Russian Life” magazine but due to it’s provoking manner eventually was banned and was never printed. I can be proud of myself.
