Gone Fishin'

Close ups
This is acrylic approx.5x8...on two pages.

Painting for The Flying Moleskins. Check it out.
This is for Michelle's book. The theme being favorite things...places...memories.
I used to spend more time than any human being should, trying to figure out and many times catching the great large mouth bass. Doing this painting revived many pleasant memories of being wrapped in nature-studying all her many moods and creatures. I feel the experience works it's way into my paintings.

Hope you like it, Michelle.

This and Dominique's book will be headed your way Vern!

Orchids

Close ups

Oil on 5x7 hardboard.

This is my submission to the WDE at Wet Canvas. The reference photo was supplied by Dewi.

Not normally a floral painter, I went for these beautifully colored orchids. Thought that they make an interesting composition.

The board was first covered in black gesso. I used a touch of acrylic pthalo blue to the gesso to darken it even further. I like how it makes the color pop right from the start!

The Instructor...Bears

Close ups

Oil on 5x7 hardboard.

This is my submission to the WDE at Wet Canvas. Beth was hostess this week. Thanks, Beth!

Momma will instruct these young'uns in all they will need for survival and carrying on the species. You can bet that she will do all within her power to keep them safe. No baby sitters needed . Very inspiring and right with God's plan.
The cubs are quick learners...Judging from some stories in the news, many humans would be wise to take parenting instructions from her as well.

I really had a great time when it came to applying the thick impasto (the frosting) at the finish.
Thanks for looking!

Got Milk??

Close ups

Oil on 5x7 hardboard..

My submission for this week's WDE at Wet Canvas. The ref photo was supplied by Jean.
The challenge for this week was to paint using only three primary colors. I chose Ult. Blue, Yel. Ochre, and Transparent Red Iron Oxide...just.to see what might happen.

The TRIO + YO yielded a great color for the colt! I think it is more vibrant than burnt sienna, my usual choice.
But after I got the horses laid in, I realized I would have to add to my palette. The Ult. Blue and Yel. Ochre made a dull green...like spinach...not bright enough for me. So I added Cad. Yel. Med. Then, what the hey, I added Aliz. Crim. to mix in some of the darks.
Hope ya like it.

The Message

Close ups

Oil on 5x7 hardboard.

This is my submission to this week's WDE at Wet Canvas. Elizabeth supplied the photo.
Elizabeth also issued a challenge: To write a poem to go with your painting.
In the spirit of the WDE challenge, I tried to come up with a poem ( I'm no poet...now everyone will know it ).

"Sweet words put to paper,
How like you are to me,
To brush strokes laid on canvas,
Bearing souls to see
."

Fourth Of July...American Pride

Close ups

Oil on 5x7 hardboard.

I like how the eagle's feathers mirrors the curve of the fireworks.

I am proud of the the USA. Look at any country (or person) closely enough and you will see faults. But there's an overwhelming amount to be proud of...not ashamed of.
So this coming Sunday...Happy birthday America!!!! Know that you are still loved!

God bless the USA!

Boisterous And Blue--Blue Jay

Close ups

Oil on 5x7 hardboard.

Here's my submission to this week's WDE at Wet Canvas hosted by Heather.

I have always loved birds. The Blue Jay is right at the top of my favorites list along with the Cardinal. Although the Jay is loud and aggressive it's still a marvelous design of shape and color. I think the Lord was trying to get our attention when He created this striking bird. I know He sure got mine.

The Jay is from a photograph. The background....Pure imagination. I hope you like it!

Peugeot Planter

Close ups

Oil on 5x7 hardboard.

Here's my submission to this week's WDE at Wet Canvas. The photo showed an abandoned/retired 1938 Peugeot 202 truck in France. The photo was graciously supplied by Robert...Thanks Robert!!

I really thought long and hard before tackling this one. The old truck was a challenge for me with the mechanical straight lines and curves...the sort of thing I usually avoid.

It looked sad all alone and abandoned, so I brought a little cheer into it's life by doing what nature does...turn it into a planter. A nice contrast between organic and inorganic--man and nature.

Wondrous Creation

Close ups

Oil on 5x7 hardboard.

This is my contribution to Gary Keimig's great Wilderness Art Challenge. The guy is blessed to live in Wyoming, to be a fine artist, and to be a super photographer. What a joyous combination!

The title, "Wondrous Creation" is meant as a reminder to us of the amazing wonder that surrounds us every hour of every day. Look at how glorious this animal is!

I enjoyed doing this mule deer...trying to keep it freewheeling and loose.

Sunny Disposition-Dog

Close ups

Oil on 7x5 hardboard.

Here's my submission to this week's WDE at Wet Canvas. June supplied the reference photo.

After a little research, I think this is a golden retriever. The color is much like a light yellow lab but the longer coat says "golden retriever". Correct me if I'm wrong.

I got a bare start on it yesterday. Slept on it and finished with this today. This process really helps in solving problems and making decisions. My li'l ol' brain was at work all night...Think I'll take a nap soon.
Hope you all like it!

San Francisco Streetcar

Close ups

Oil on 5x7 hardboard.

Here's my submission for the June ADNW painting challenge. This fine challenge is put on by Lee Brown, a very talented artist/ photographer. Thank you, Lee!

I used a tight crop to center in on the portion that caught my eye upon first glance at the total photo.
It all came together surprisingly fast.

As always, I tried to make the painting my own...to not slavishly copy the photo.
As humans, we have a tendency to be control freaks when painting. The main thing I have picked up on my daily painting jaunts is to carefully observe what the paint does. If it looks good, then leave it alone and move on. Don't try to control every little line by over detailing. In other words, I try to let the paint control me...not me control the paint.

Monet's Cockerel

Close ups

Oil on 5x7 hardboard.

This is my submission to the WDE at Wet Canvas. The image was graciously supplied by Kat. This rooster/cockerel is a resident at Monet's garden in Giverny, France.

Trying something New! I did something different (for me) on this one. Instead of going for the largest brush I could handle, I went with two of my small brushes...plus the palette knife in choice areas. Even though I used small brushes, I resisted the urge to control every stroke which leads to over detailing. I tried to keep the strokes loose and gestural. I like the effect.
Do you think it's too "busy"?

The Donkey Re Do

Close ups

Acrylic on 7x5 hardboard.

Sometimes, just for the heck of it, I review some of my past work. Often I feel like reworking it just to see if I have picked up any new tricks. Most times there is negligible change when I'm done...Darn!

As the title suggests, this is a re do of a painting originally done on July 5, 09. It can be seen here. I basically added a few new colors for punch and heightened the value contrast . Let me know what you really think.

Memorial Day - Seat Of Honor

Oil on 7x5 hardboard.

This is my submission to WDE at Wet Canvas. The reference photo was graciously submitted by Desiree.

The original photo showed a beautiful elderly couple sitting on a bench. There is something uplifting about seeing a couple like this. I compels me to consider all they have seen and been through.
I changed things by adding the uniform and flag to create a Memorial Day tribute to the military heroes. I hope the painting honors all who fought for the US and all the faithful partners who stuck with them throughout it all.

Despite all the ugly rumors, American pride is still alive and well. God bless all who are in the service of our great country...and all who ever were.

Happy Memorial Day everyone!

Ben--Shih Tzu

Close ups

Acrylic on 8x10 hardboard.

Do you remember when I did the acrylic painting of my neighbor's dog, Max? That was in March of this year. Before that, I painted Jingles for him on Dec. 26 2008.
Well, Jack got a new acquisition a short time ago. It's a little heart stealing Shih Tzu named Ben. Personally I think he's a thinly disguised Gremlin. Sure hope Jack doesn't feed him after midnight.

Here's where to see Jingles and Max.

I'm very fortunate to have the world's best neighbor living just on the other side of my back fence.
