Lake Louise-Alberta Canada

Close ups

Oil on 7x5 archival canvas panel.
This is my late contribution to WDE at Wet Canvas. Mike was the host and provided the great photo for this piece. Thank you, Mike!
Lake Louise is Canada's "Diamond in the Wilderness," and the "Hiking Capital of Canada". This area offers a tremendous diversity of recreational and sightseeing opportunities.

I decided to go with a landscape for the freedom it offers. After doing some figuratives and a pet portrait, it felt good not to have to work so tightly.
I just had a good time playing with the color on this one.

I first toned the support with thinned alizarin crimson. Bits of it peek throughout the painting. I think that this harmonizes the painting plus adds excitement for the eye.

Digger

Close ups

Acrylic on 8x10 hardboard.

You folks may remember my neighbor, Jack, who had me paint three pet portraits of his doggies.
Well, his daughter-in-law said she would like a painting of her long haired daschund named Digger. So her hubbie commissioned me to paint up a surprise for her.

I heard that she was very happy with it...Whew! That's the best part of painting...to know that what you do is capable of bringing a bit of joy to someone.

Father And Son

Close ups

Acrylic on 7x5 hardboard.
NA

This is a Christmas present to my Grandson, Joseph. It is meant to symbolically represent him and his son, Colton.

Colton is nine months old, and so is not the age of the boy in the painting...Also, Joseph is not a roping cowboy, but he likes all things Western. Like I said...symbolic.
The real heart of this piece illustrates the passing down from father/mother to son/daughter and the pure love that is involved in the relationship.

Merry Christmas To All!
Love the scripture below.

Jesus was calling God his own Father.
John 5:19 Jesus gave them this answer: “Very truly I tell you, the Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does.

Eternal Hope Is Born

Merry Christmas

Close ups

Oil on 5x7 hardboard.
Oh, Holy Night. The only real Hope was given to the world on that night long ago. This Hope is greater than the power of any government administration or world order. This is the only High Power and will set the USA back on the right track.

The true spirit of Christmas is giving and...what you give is Love.
You will receive more back than what you gave...
The wrapped gifts are symbolic...
The true gift is love.

Merry Christmas to all my blogging artists and friends!
May the upcoming New Year be filled with love and hope!

Over The River...

Painting Progression

Step 1: Hardboard is covered with both white and black gesso winding up with a middle value gray tone. Then the support was toned with thinned alizarin crimson and Prussian blue acrylic.

The drawing was transferred using Saral Transfer paper. I then ink in any important areas that I definitely don't want to lose using Faber-Castell Pitt artist pen.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Step 2: From here on out I used oils. I painted what would be the lightest and darkest areas to establish the range of contrast. Up till now, this is my usual technique. But, here, I take a different tact.
Instead of laying on the paint in one thick stroke after another and going after the thick impasto texture, I apply the paint thinly.
Using a stiff brush, I spread it thinly in small areas at a time..As the bristles run out of paint, delicate and controlled bending takes place. I found this by accident today, and really do enjoy how this works! It lends a soft, subtle effect. The appearance somehow reminds me of an older era.
Peaceful Gaze
Close ups
Oil on 7x5 hardboard.
This is for the weekly WDE at Wet Canvas. Dewi was the host and this portrait is from a photo of her beautiful friend, Ella.
I had to really fight my natural inclination to paint one of the animals this week.
I elected to go for what is for me a difficult subject...the human animal. In this case, the lovely Ella.
I tried to stay relatively loose and push the color. Maybe I wasn't entirely successful in that goal.
Thanks for looking. And your comments are always welcome!
Not Guilty
Painting Progression
Step 1: Hardboard is covered with both white and black gesso winding up with a middle value gray tone. Then the support was toned with thinned alizarin crimson acrylic.
The drawing was transferred using Saral Transfer paper. Saral is great stuff! It creates a white chalk line and is excellent for transferring unto a dark surface. I then ink in any important areas that I definitely don't want to lose using Faber-Castell Pitt artist pen. Then thalo blue acrylic was added to what would be the white areas, then in a few extra areas throughout the painting for balance.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Step 2: From here on out I used oils. I painted what would be the lightest and darkest areas to establish the range of contrast.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Step 3: I continued to develop the painting using thinned darks and thick lights. For thick paint, pick up plenty at the tip of the bristles...apply with one touch (don't attempt to spread it)...the go back and reload.
This little basset just sends the AWWWW factor clear off the charts! The little guy looked so guilty! I added the Christmas accoutrements to illustrate his horrible crime against society.
Montezuma Castle -Sedona, Az
Close ups
Oil on 7x5 hardboard.
This is for the WDE at Wet Canvas...Catherine supplied the photo choices.
The Sedona, Arizona cliff dwellings really piqued my interest. So I did a little Google search and came up with some interesting facts.
An ancient Indian Tribe called the Sinaquas built the cliff dwellings called Montezuma Castle about 700 years ago in the early 1300s.
It took ladders to climb to Montezuma Castle and as the Sinaqua reached each level, more ladders were needed to make their way to the cliff community making it difficult for enemy tribes to penetrate the natural defense of straight-vertical barriers.
This is oil on a 7x5 hardboard.I first toned it with a dark red acrylic.
I became very choosy about where to place the lights and the thick accents.
I really enjoyed doing this one.
Bovine Beauty-Calf
Close ups
Oil on 5x7 hardboard.
This is for the WDE at Wet Canvas. Skappy generously supplied the reference photos.
I singled one calf from the herd. Always a joy to paint bovine beauty.
I first toned the canvas with a dark red/brown acrylic. After the drawing was on, I painted the background (the area around the calf) with black gesso. After the black was dry, I made it notches darker by painting it with thinned ultr. marine blue oil paint.
After all the background prep, I had fun painting the calf in thick strokes.
Summer Sun into Autumn Sun
Close ups
Oil on 5x7 hardboard.
This landscape was posted on Wed. It was done quickly and posted immediately thereafter. It was a summer scene and I felt it was devoid of life...just "blah".
I appreciate the input of my artist friends... Celeste Bergin and Pam Holnback. Please check out their fine blogs. They made several suggestions that I immediately recognized as true. I was merely temporarily "blinded" because of the freshness of the work.
For one thing, I am presently surrounded with fall colors and my muse just didn't want to tackle so much summer green. So I re-worked it into an Autumn landscape.
I'm happier with it now...but, of course (as always), there remain areas in question.
Here's a side by side for easy comparison.
Oil on 5x7 archival canvas panel.
Thought I'd run this by you folks. I didn't have a lot of time to paint today, so I whipped this up to check some facets of landscape painting that I have been mulling over. Less is more...a touch of red near a point of interest...just basically the power of suggestion.
I don't yet know how successful it is since it's so fresh in my mind.
Do you think it's overdone or underdone...or as the baby bear says: "Just right."?
Thanks for looking.
Oil on 7x5 hardboard.
Loved this flamingo. Li supplied the photo while hosting the WDE at Wet Canavs.
I actually put off starting on this one out of uncertainty of what exactly to do with it...had no idea. But after I got started it was great fun and just kinda came together.
Do you put off starting a painting for some reason?
