Up, up and away

Heading OS tomorrow. Two weeks in the USA. It's a work related trip so not a lot of sight seeing, but I will do my best to help the American economy. First stop Las Vegas for training and a conference. Had better start packing as I leave here in 12 hours!

Fiji

No, not me, but my husband, enjoyed a holiday in Fiji last week. He likes to scuba dive so every so often he takes off for a diving holiday. This year he stayed at a resort on the main island and caught the "worker's boat' each day to the outer islands. He stayed on an island each day, diving
and relaxing before catching the boat "home" each night.

He like to take photographs, and has three cameras "just in case' one fails him. He is getting better with his photography, but tells me he needs to go away more often to improve his technique!
Sometimes I go on these holidays with him, but as I am flying away myself on Sunday we decided that, this time, I would stay home and look after the cat!

After seeing the photos, I am beginning to regret that decision.............................
Especially after seeing this photo..............

These "little" beauties were about $30-$40 Fijian . Approx $20-25 Australian!!!!!
I hope the cat appreciates my sacrifice.

Garryowen

Our family has been waiting for this day for 18 years!! My sister is an accomplished show rider and her children are also horse crazy.

India, her oldest daughter is an lovely rider and this year was accepted to compete in the Garryowen, Australia's most prestigious "turn-out" event for equestriennes. (You have to be 18 to compete in the event)

The story of the Garryowen is tragic. Violet Murrell was an accomplished rider who adored her horse "Garryowen". One night (over 70 years ago)his stable caught alight and Violet rushed in to save him. Sadly, both she and her beloved horse lost their lives in the fire. Since then the Royal Melbourne Show has held the "Garryowen" event to honor the memory of the love a lady had for her horse.

My sister, Sally, competed in the Garryowen as a younger woman, and this year we were all there to see India compete in her first Garryowen. she wasn't placed but she did very well, leading the score for quite a while. She rode out of the arena with a grin from ear to ear so we were all happy.

The final touches - India had a team of 7 to help her - including a hairdresser for herself, and one for the horse. (all friends who came to help). Sally is making a final touch to her boots.

Horse and rider are judged - the rider has to stand on the red carpet, Reggie (the horse) doesn't get the same treatment. there are about 10 judges for the event - all looking for different things.

Doing her work-out

Waiting for the announcement - India and Reggie are on the right hand side - see if you can find them.
Big grins - it is over - she did well, Reggie behaved himself; everyone was happy

Roy Thomas Vinnicombe

My grandfather, a copper in the 1920's. Shiny shoes are still the go - Brendan won the "shinest shoes on parade" award (the secret is the polish you use for polishing the riding boots you wear when showing horses).

A proud day

We have a policeman in the family!! Our youngest son graduated from the Police Academy last Friday. Very proud grandparents and parents (and an older brother) attended his graduation ceremony which was held in the Police Chapel at Glen Waverley due to cold weather. The official photos haven't arrived yet, but we have some (very) happy snaps. My grandfather was a policeman in the 1920's (was a shooting instructor and one of dad's cousins was chief commissioner in NSW and Qld so there is a bit of a family tradition. Our son got top marks for his shooting so maybe he takes after his great-grandfather.

A few work related dramas lately are taking their toll. However, an evening with friends with some wine, chocolate and a 9" high "Red Velvet Cake" was just what the doctor ordered. Thanks girls (and the young chefs whose photos I won't upload until I check with their Mum)

The recipe book - sometimes a cake is BTS
(Better than s..)
