He's one of us

Continuing on from yesterday's post.....(which also has a link to the start of this story)....

As family reunions go this one was pretty special. A number of us gathered to say "G'day and welcome to the mob" at a winery in St Arnaud today. Mark, his beautiful wife Rivka, his two sons and one of his son's partners were the guests of honor. I am sure his daughter, at home on the other side of the world, had a lump in her throat too.

This is Mark, with his mother's cousin Lois. (My aunt, my father's sister). We have compared photos and Lois looked like Mark's mum, Patricia, when she was younger.

Can you see the family resemblance? Look at those eyes.

Mark was presented with a plaque, to be placed on his mother's grave in Perth. I am sure Patricia was looking down on it all today, and we think her mother was too.

Family connections were made, stories told and photographs and snippets of information shared. My sister Lynne is in the centre of this photograph -she is our family tree expert and her second name is "Patricia".

Mark and Jean - she was "the holder of the secret" and the key to this happy ending. Once the story was unravelled she decide to hop on a plane and head to Israel to meet Mark and his family. She is 80 years young, enjoyed her trip and organised the day today. I am sure Dorethea and her family in Heaven are grateful.

And this is Estelle and Mark. Without her tenacity and expertise this story would never have been told, Mark would still be wondering.....

and our family would be poorer for not knowing.

For my regular readers, who remember this blog entry
Tomorrow's the day...
Mark has arrived in Australia and we are gathering to welcome him properly into our family.

I hope he realises what he is getting into!

'The Help"

Yesterday I had an unexpected day free so went to see "The Help", based on the wonderful book by Kathryn Stockett.

I loved the book and loved the film. I went with someone who hadn't read the book which was fun - I knew what was coming in some scenes and she had no idea - I was chuckling in anticipation, especially as the "pie" scene was coming up.

For those of you who haven't read the book or seen the film, "Do yourself a favour".

60 warm babies

Sadly, we didn't win any $$$, but we are content knowing that 60 babies are going to be warmer due to our efforts

Born to Knit

Our school is thrilled - we entered a competition which involved knitting blankets for "Save the Children" to send to India, Cambodia and Loas. We submitted 60 woollen hand knitted blankets (thanks to children, parent, staff, grandmothers, and other friends of our school). We made the finals and I took a team to Melbourne last Friday for the judging. the children had to do a presentation on how we would spend the prize money. No results yet, but here are the kids from the shortlisted school in front of the 800 + blankets collected.

It actually doesn't matter whether we win or not, as we had a lot of fun, and 60 babies will now be warm due to our efforts.

Quilts in the barn

A glorious spring day saw a friend and I escape domestic chores and head off to Wonga Park to the annual "Quilts in a Barn" exhibition. This annual event raises money for breast cancer research and this year the featured artist was Jo Morton from the USA who designs reproduction fabrics and quilts.

We loved the designs, the details....

the colors.....

the little surprises.....

the live entertainment....(the alpacas won and the little dog fled)

and the cake and cup of tea, with the vintage quilt "tablecloths".
