Mission: Tooth Fairy

The Tooth Fairy visited Andrew twice within our first five days here in Florida. Andrew wanted to lose his second tooth a "cool" way. He considered tying one end of a string to his tooth and the other end to a rock or the dog or something interesting like that, but then he decided he'd rather lose his tooth in a more controlled environment. Here's what he decided:

First we tied a string to his loose tooth. (The night vision goggles were for super human power).

Spencer tied the other end of the string to the doorknob and held Andrew's head tightly. Andrew held a pillow tightly.

Boom! Door slammed. You can see by Spencer's expression that this took considerable effort. Perhaps it was an especially stubborn tooth.

One happy boy missing his two front teeth. Mission accomplished.

Living at the Beach

So after leaving our relaxing home on the Seneca River in late June, we drove down to Florida to our next small piece of paradise. We moved into a little three bedroom house on stilts on Siesta Key, one of the barrier islands on the gulf coast in Sarasota. We sold a bunch of furniture and put some things in storage in order to fit into our little home, but it was totally worth it. We live a short walk from the beach and we love to spend time swimming, snorkeling, fishing, digging, walking and watching sunsets. We've tried several different local beaches, but our favorites are the ones closest to home: Siesta Beach and our little private neighborhood beach.

This is Siesta Beach at the main beach access. This picture doesn't do the beach justice: it is a jaw dropping beautiful beach. I was shocked at how beautiful it was the first time I saw it. The sand is white and soft and it never feels hot, so walking across this long stretch of sand is a pleasure.

Calvin swimming in his hole. His favorite thing to do is dig with a "shubble" so we make lots of swimming holes like this. He also loves to swim in the gulf and is pretty good at handling the waves.

Andrew cooling off.

Sunset.

Our neighborhood beach is small and the sand isn't quite as nice, but it's private and there's a reef just 20 yards out or so that the boys like to explore. It's a great fishing spot and it's the only nearby beach were we can bring our dog.

Calvin enjoying a stick. That's Lido key on the right.

Here's David showing off the bait fish he caught with his cast net.

We've caught crabs and different types of fish at this beach and the boys love to eat what we catch. Andrew decided he wanted to eat one of these little fish raw. I told him to go for it. First he bit it until it stopped moving.

Then he just kind of dug in. There were too many little bones to spit out, so he fed the rest of his fish to a seagull.

Here's everybody just doin' their thing.

I can hardly believe our time here is 1/4 over. We're just trying to make the most of this one short year!

Vacation Rental

Did I mention that when we sold our house, the buyers wanted to close a full month before Spencer finished his residency? Rather than live in a cardboard box on the streets of Syracuse, we rented a lovely vacation house on the Seneca River. Since it was still the off-season, we got a good deal on this place and we lucked out with some really warm spring weather.

The boys went swimming most days, even when it was cold. We let them go off in the canoe themselves if they brought a walkie talkie.

We liked to eat outside until the mosquitos started biting, which happened at about 7 every evening.

Andrew and Calvin sharing popsicles.

We caught loads of little fish right off our dock. Spencer caught a few big ones.

We had a party on Memorial Day. Amazing weather!

Lou brought his boat and took the kids for rides.

We had a campfire in the evening and roasted marshmallows for smores.

Spencer's parents came and stayed with us for a week before Spencer's graduation. We went strawberry picking and just enjoyed our time on the river. My parents and my sister, Angela, and her family also visited for a few days at graduation time.

This was a nice transition time for us. We had all the stress of packing, moving and cleaning behind us and we could just enjoy our last month in Syracuse. This house was a perfect place to entertain family at graduation time and when it was time to leave, we just had to pack our car up and go.

Boston

I've always wanted to visit Boston, so twelve days before we moved (crazy, but I'd do it again in a heartbeat), we packed up the car and drove to Beantown. We visited the Boston Children's Museum, the Public Gardens, The Swan Boats and walked the Freedom Trail. We also stopped to visit our old best buddies from college who we haven't seen in several years.

The Boston Children's Museum.

The Make Way for Ducklings statues.

This is the Swan Boat ride. We think we spotted Mr. and Mrs. Mallard and David is pretty sure he saw Louis the trumpeter swan with a chalkboard tied around his neck.

We found this awesome hole-in-the-wall place in Chinatown. David gobbled up a plate full of clams and Andrew ordered something very exotic too, but I can't remember what it was.

Home Sweet Home - SOLD

It's been six very eventful months since we've updated our blog and I hope to spend some time over the next few days to catch you all up on what we've been up to.

We spent the better part of January, February and March preparing our house so we could put it on the market. I watched probably 50 hours of "Designed to Sell" on HGTV and did my best to copy what I saw there. Here's how everything turned out:

Here's the foyer/living room. We painted it one color, hated it, then painted again a couple of days later. (Just for the record, I don't recommend ever doing it that way. If you know the color is wrong, stop painting, go back to the store and get what you want). I bought new curtains, throw pillows, accent chairs, a mirror, a lamp shade and decorative items and took down most of the paintings we had on our walls. We spray painted the gold lamp a metallic black, as well as the light fixtures on the wall (you can't see them well in the picture). I also frosted the glass on the light fixtures with some special spray paint. We had to hire a guy to come fix the ceiling where it was wet and warped from the leaky bathroom upstairs.

In the dining room, we scraped that awful wallpaper, painted, added some black decorative wall hangings and some plants, painted the frames of the artwork we left up, added a rug (from one of the upstairs bedrooms), replaced the curtains with the ones we had previously hanging in the living room, and got rid of the china cabinet.

We scraped wallpaper in the kitchen, painted, replaced the refrigerator, reupholstered the chairs, decluttered and added a few red and orange decorative items.

In the family room, I replaced the curtains, cleaned the carpet (it was white underneath all that dirt) and recovered the throw pillows.

We renovated both bathrooms, ripping out the laminate floors and replacing them with tile. One floor was much harder than the other because we had to replace the subflooring because the wood was wet and rotting. We replaced the vanities and mirrors, replaced light fixtures, scraped wallpaper in full bathroom and replaced the tile wall in the full bathroom with wainscoting. It was a long and painful process and I plan to never do anything like it again, but our bathrooms looked a million times better and I think added a lot of value to the house.

The master bedroom got a paint job, new curtains, rug, bedspread and lamps.

The guest room just needed some new paint.

We said goodbye to the dinosaurs painted on the wall in the boys' room, got rid of their yucky rug and replaced it with a little braided rug, bought new bedspreads an packed up most of their toys.

We didn't do much in Calvin's room-- just packed up the books and decluttered.

When we bought the house, I just knew the square footage that showed on the city records was wrong. Before we listed, I measured myself and it came out about 250 sq ft more than what was listed. So I hired an appraiser to get an official measurement and she measured it at about 275 sq ft larger than what the records showed. Mo money for us!

So, the boys and I kept the house scrupulously clean for about five weeks and we were able to sell the house in a lousy market for a decent profit. We feel so blessed because even now, a lot of the houses that were on sale at the same time as ours are still on the market.

We all loved our home, and it was really hard to leave. We miss our friends in Syracuse and have so many great memories of our five years there. I, however, will not miss the snow.

One moment in time

I pulled out my camera this evening to photograph my sweet boys doing their favorite things after dinner.

David reading. Current favorites: Percy Jackson series, Warriors series

Andrew building with Legos. Here he's perfecting his egg launcher.

Calvin "hiding." He loves to get people to chase him, and then he just runs to one of his favorite places and hides.

Talent Show

I started posting this a month ago, but the videos wouldn't upload. Instead, I'm just going to post youtube links.

Our little David loves to be on stage. A couple of weeks ago, he informed me that he had signed up to do a juggling act in the ward talent show. This was surprising to me, not only because I didn't know he knew how to sign himself up, but also because well.... he can't juggle. In his determination to learn, he spent some time throwing one ball around and he even tried juggling with a few tissues, but to no avail. David realized that he wouldn't be able to learn to juggle in just two weeks, so he decided that he would put on a magic show. We found a few helpful videos demonstrating some impressive magic tricks, but unfortunately they required more physical coordination than my eight year old could muster. His next idea involved putting together a family rock band, but well, it didn't happen. He finally settled on a stand up comedy act because he loves to tell jokes. I have posted his act here for your viewing pleasure:

Andrew performed a piano solo, "Ode to Joy." He figured out the melody on his own. He was so proud of himself when he was done.

The Syracuse Ward never disappoints on talent night. We had a hula dancer, a multi-racial midget and a guest appearance by Brittany Spears. So fun!
