Silver Borne Book Review

>> Monday, June 6, 2011

Silver Borne (Mercy Thompson, Book 5) by Patricia Briggs

I had been putting off reading this book because I knew once I picked it up I wouldn't be able to put it down. I have a fondness for Mercy Thompson and her coyote. Mercy spent a bit too much time in her human skin for me in this book but I can honestly say that was the only thing I didn't like about this book.

This book has a lot going on and all of it is interesting. As is usual in this series a lot of seemingly unrelated things happen in the first few chapters and then they become an intricate web of some big bad master plan. This adventure revolves around a magical fae book she borrowed. Returning the book proves to be a challenge as the owner is missing and strange and sometimes unfriendly fae are blocking her investigation.

Mercy is Adams mate now and she is having major issues with the mate and pack bonds. She doesn't like having the pack in her head. Their union has caused a great deal of unrest in the pack. Many of the members don't believe that a coyote is fit for the pack Alpha and they are plotting against her. Adam is impressive in this book and he deals very well with just about everything that comes his way even the massive panic attacks that Mercy suffers from. Now I am not saying that he isn't possessive and overbearing at times but he tries really hard to let Mercy be herself. They are a fun couple and I just love the interaction between them.

There was a time where I was kind of torn between Mercy's two love interests and kind of rooting for Samuel  a little because he was just like a big puppy most of the time instead of a wolf. One that could be lethal if needed but calm and cool the majority of the time. Samuel is an old wolf and he has lost the battle for Mercy's affections, he is depressed and wants to end his life. He sees nothing to live for and he spends a great deal of this book as a big white wolf. Mercy is charged with finding a reason for Samuel to want to live on top of her busy schedule of finding Phin, the bookstore owner, and making peace with the pack.

While I love the these books I would really hate to be Mercy Thompson as she never seems to catch a break. If it were not for Zee and her trusty helper Gabriel she would not be able to keep her auto shop open as she is always running around fixing fae, vampire, and wolf problems. She seems to have very little time for working on cars. She never gets to sit down and just breath or get on all fours and run. It makes for some great reading and I highly recommend you pick this book up. This book gets 5 out of 5 stars.

Patricia Briggs and Ilona Andrews Reviews In Progress

>> Sunday, May 29, 2011

First I am clearing my calender and reading Magic Slays (Kate Daniels, Book 5) as soon as it is delivered to my Kindle on May 31st. I have never been disappointed in a Kate Daniels book and I just can't wait to read it!

I have been sick so I picked up Silver Borne by Patricia Briggs to get my mind off of how awful I was feeling. It worked and I hope to work on a review for this book sometime this week.

I never got around to writing a review for Bayou Moon (The Edge, Book 2) so the plan is with three days off to get this one finished as well. I can tell you it was a great book and worth the buy just as Silver Borne was.

I am going to go out on a limb here and say anything by Ilona Andrews is worth the dollars spent. You just can't go wrong with a Kate Daniels book.

Oh and don't forget to visit my little sisters blog Oh My Goddess, Are You Stalking Me. She has been allowing me to use some of her great reviews to keep this blog going when I am super busy with other things. Thanks!

On My Reading and Review List

>> Thursday, February 3, 2011

I am really behind on this blog so I thought I would give you a quick update. I still have one more book review and a few short stories in my Ilona Andrews series.
On the Edge (The Edge, Book 1)
Must Love Hellhounds (Story from Kate Daniels Series)
Dark and Stormy Knights (Another short story)

I am also reading Ravena & The Resurrected by Tami Jackson. I am having a little trouble reading this because I downloaded it into an adobe file. I thought with all the reading I do on a computer that would make it as easy as reading a paper copy of the book. Somehow I like the hard copy better. Just so you know it is not the book itself it is reading on the computer screen for too long. I need to take breaks like I do when I am reading blogs. Tami Jackson will also have a guest post on this blog I am really excited about it!

Next on my list is a book I forgot I had Learning to Stand by Claudia Hall Christian. I knew I had it at one time and because I couldn't find it I actually thought I dreamed that I had it. When I found it I remember saying if I put it in my bedroom it won't get mixed in with all the other books. This was one of those times where you put something somewhere safe so you don't loose it yet it is the last place you would actually look for that particular item. I never get tired of reading Claudia's work she is a master when it comes to creating amazing characters.

Silver Borne (Mercy Thompson) by Patricia Briggs is next on my list. I can't wait to see what happens next in this series. I just have too many books I want to read and I will never loose any of this weight if I sit around and read all day.

Hunting Ground by Patricia Briggs Book Review

>> Saturday, May 1, 2010

Hunting Ground by Patricia Brigs is the second book in the Alpha and Omega series. If you would like to read the first review you can click Cry Wolf. Anna and Charles are werewolves in the Alpha pack of North American wolves. Anna is an Omega and has the rare ability to bring peace and stability to a pack and bring calm to wolves in a nasty situation. She and Charles her mate are sent as ambassadors to an international meeting of werewolf packs to discuss the details of bringing their existence public.

While Charles is negotiating with the packs Anna is sent shopping with an escort of course. They are attacked and with the aid of an absolutely awesome witch and her mate they manage to take out several of the vampires that ambushed them. The search is on for the reason behind the attack as more wolves are attacked. Charles is busy so Anna picks up the investigative details. Not all of the wolves are too happy about their existence becoming public so there is plenty of reason for wolves to hire vampires to take out important figures like the son or the Marrok (head of the North American wolves) and his mate

This book felt rushed to me there was a lot of information and not enough character development. You got to meet packs from all over the world and you didn't learn much about any of them. You also got to meet an awesome witch and another omega that would have added a great deal to the book if they had been fleshed out a little more. The fey plays a key role in the book but you get to know little about here as well. What I really wish there was more of is the relationship between Charles and Anna.

This book was fun but very short and lacking in details. I liked the first book a lot better as it took more of a look into the lives of Anna and Charles and their wolves. This book felt shallow to me and while the story was good it was more like a long short story than a book. I would have liked to see much more of the inner lives and turmoil that the characters faced. There was a really good scene with Anna and her jealous wolf and a female fey that was a once her mates lover.

I would still recommend this book but I was not one of my favorites so I am giving it 3 out of 5 stars.

Upcoming Reviews

>> Wednesday, January 6, 2010

I have three reviews to do. Over the last few days I didn't feel so well so I got some reading done. Finished Every Which Way But Dead and A Fistful of Charms books three and four in the Hollows series by Kim Harrison. Click on the titles to see the previous reviews Dead Witch Walking and The Good The Bad and The Undead. These books just keep getting better and as soon as I feel good for more than a few hours I will be posting the reviews plus I still need to get one up for Dead and Gone. I am all out of Hollows books but there are at least three more plus one that can be pre-ordered.

I have to save some money so I will just have to read some of my already purchased books before I continue on in this series. I only have two series that I am dying to read the next one and will stop everything for right now. That would be the Mercy Thompson series and the Kate Daniels series.

Bone Crossed

>> Thursday, August 13, 2009

Bone Crossed the fourth book in the Mercy Thompson Series. Please be warned there is no way to write this review with out giving away a little from the last books.
Moon Called
Blood Bound
Iron Kissed

Almost immediately Mercy is sent a message from the Vampire Queen Marsiella. A burned up being resembling Stephan lands in her home. Marsiella knows Mercy killed Andre and knows Stephan helped. If that isn't bad enough Mercy's mom was already there giving Adam a once over when Stephan lands in her house. Adam and his pack feed Stephan until he is no longer a danger to others and move him to a wolf pen.

Mercy goes to work to find her shop with graffiti all over it and an odd set of crossed bones on the door. On top of that a college classmate reads about her killing her rapist and dating the werewolf alpha and decides she can deal with her ghost problem. Mercy talks to Bran and Adam and decides she will go check out the ghost thing while they work on a negotiation with Marsiella.

There is only one vampire in the area that Mercy will travel to so they all assume she will be safe. He is a powerful vampire that no one messes with. Well not Mercy she happens to sit across from him at dinner her first night out of town.

This book was a little thrown together for me there were a few plot lines like she was trying desperately to get one of her open lines closed. It didn't all feel like it worked together like her other books. Like she had to try to hard to tie some things together.

I wouldn't say I was disappointed the book was very entertaining. I actually listened to it on audio book again, they are really nice for when you husband needs all the lights off to play his video game. I am going to give this book four out of five stars. I still think it was worth the read just not as good as the last two books.

Book Review: Cry Wolf by Patricia Briggs

>> Wednesday, August 12, 2009

This Dark Novel was excellent and it was my first fiction audio book. I usually save the rating for last but I have to give it the full five stars right off the starting line.

This is a spin off from the Mercy Thompson series, but you don't need to read it first to get the gist of the book. It mostly takes place in Bran's Pack, he is the Marrok. He sends his son Charles to deal with some business that comes up in the Chicago pack and it ends up a blood bath. Charles finds Anna and is instantly in love with her.

This book is switches between perspectives quite a bit so you get to see Anna and Charles as they try to work out their feelings for each other. Anna has been severely abused in her old pack because she is an Omega and they didn't want her to know her power. Anna has some real trust issues and Charles spends a lot of time trying to figure them out.

I think maybe I loved this book because unlike the Mercy Thompson series there is more of a love story here. Not like a romance novel with tons of sex, like rough man and a hurt woman trying to make something work.

Charles is his fathers enforcer, people are afraid of him. He tries to make sure Anna is not afraid of him, he longs for her to trust him. He feels different with her.

Anna was made a werewolf, and raped and beaten by her pack. She was kept in line by those who had power over her. She really likes Charles but she doesn't know what to do about it she feels like running away.

The story behind the love story is something of a mystery. People are being killed in the woods and their injuries say werewolf. It doesn't seem to be anyone in Bran's pack so Anna and Charles go into the woods to investigate. They run into more trouble than they had planned for but you will have to read it to find out more.

Book Review: Iron Kissed by Patricia Briggs

>> Tuesday, August 11, 2009

Iron Kissed is the third book in the Mercy Thompson Series. Here are links to the first two
Moon Called
Blood Bound (insert links)

Iron Kissed dives right into a new world of preternatural beings. We get an up close and personal look into the world of the Fae. When Zee the man that taught Mercy how to be a mechanic, calls for some help sniffing around some crime scenes, Mercy is all ears. Mercy is taken to the Fae reservation, to use her coyote nose to see if the Fae missed anything. Someone is murdering the Fae in their own territory and they have run into a dead end.

Next thing you know Zee is in jail for killing a suspected Fae murderer and Mercy is trying to clear his name. She hires a lawyer against the wishes of the Grey Lords, the leaders of the Fae, and even Zee refuses to cooperate. So that leaves Mercy is in huge trouble because you just don't mess with the Fae. The Fae are powerful, mystical creatures who us Glamor to hide their true identities. Just to give you an idea, there is some giant water beast who chases her later in the book that does a good job looking human most of the time.

So Mercy is still worried about the vampire she killed without permission in the last book, and now she has the Fae to worry about too. If that is not all she is being forced to choose between Adam and Samuel before the pack is affected by the strife.

I don't want to give away too much this was a great book full of twists and turns and it really packed a punch. I couldn't put this book down, I could have used a little more on the Adam/Samuel issue but that is just me. I found nothing I disliked about this book except the ending didn't wrap up nicely like the other books. The ending was not disappointing though just not pretty. I give this book 5 stars out of 5. I highly recommend this book and the rest of the books in this series.

Book Review: Blood Bound by Patricia Briggs

>> Friday, July 24, 2009

Blood Bound is the second book in the Mercy Thompson series. If you have not read Moon Called

Mercy Thompson is a walker, she can shapeshift with a great amount of ease from human to coyote and back. She is not like the were wolves who have a painful change and she is smaller in her animal form not bigger. Mercy was raised by the North American Alpha pack of werewolves in Montana. Now she lives in the Tri-cities area of Washington next door to Adam, the area's pack Alpha. She also picked up a roommate, Samuel the son of the Marrok and her childhood love.

Mercy's vampire friend Stephan calls in the favor she owes him, and asks her to attend a meeting as his coyote pet. He buckles her up in a harness for the intimidation factor to visit a vampire that is not supposed to be in the Tri-cities and is suspected of causing trouble. Stephan needs Mercy because she is immune to much of the vampires magic. This vampire is able to control other vampires and can make the werewolves obey him.

Mercy and Stephan find out that this evil vampire has also struck a deal with the devil and has a demon with him. Mercy decides to let the vampires handle their own, until Stephan, Samuel and Adam all go missing and the mistress of the vampire seethe believes she is the only one who can bring them back. I just love Mercy's character and how as soon as it gets personal she jumps right in to save the day.

So with special weapons from her Fae friend and her ability to see ghosts she launches a search for this vampire. You will have to read the rest but I can assure you that it will be a fun read.

I find Mercy to be one of the best characters I have run across in this type of book. I really love how she is torn between Samuel and Adam, who both have laid claim to her. I love how she is not jumping into bed with either of them while she is torn. I love how she fights to keep her own identity even among two dominant werewolves. I love that the more you get into these books she also fights with her own desires as well. She feels a deep need to let someone take care of her that comes out periodical but she doesn't like it. I also love that she is actually an intelligent heroine that learns from some of her mistakes.

I give this book 5 out of 5 stars.

I couldn't wait to read the next one so that review should be up soon.
the first book you can find the review by clicking on the title. You may want to read the first book first although I try not to give any spoilers there might be a few.

Took a Few Days Off to Read

>> Saturday, July 4, 2009

I read two books in the last three days and started another one. I have been reading Patricia Briggs. Last week I finished Cry Wolf (audio book) and have now read the Blood Bound and Iron Kissed. Click here for my review of Moon Called.

Moon Called is the First book in the Mercy Thompson series the next two books are Blood Bound and Iron Kissed. I flew through these books and wanted to get Bone Crossed but it is only available in hard cover and it is expensive. There is a glitch in my audible account that says I don't have an account and they won't be in until Monday. I am tempted to open another account because I enjoyed the books so much I can't wait to read another one. So instead I picked up At Graves End Jeaniene Frost.

I also loved cry wolf, I have the book and the audio version. I didn't realize until I started reading it so many of the characters sounded familiar because it is the pack of Wolves that Mercy's mother sent her to be raised. I will have reviews for each book soon but overall I would recommend this series. Mercy is actually a coyote she was born not made and she has no significant power, like the werewolves or vampires. I like her and I love the two wolves she is torn between.

I have a party to go to today so I don't see the reviews starting until tomorrow. I really do just feel like curling up on the couch for a week and reading from the time I get up until the time I go to bed. I can get away with that a few days but my house needs cleaned and I have other things that need done, such as a few reviews before I forget the details of the books.

I have to add that I will be trying to use more key words in my titles and posts so please bear with me if some of them sound a little silly. I want to drive more traffic to my site. I would also love to link to any bloggers who have a link to me. Let me know if you have a link and I will link to you. I am going to spend some of next week trying to organize my links., they are kind of a mess right now.

Moon Called: A Mercy Thompson Novel by Patricia Brigs

>> Friday, May 29, 2009

Moon Called, A Mercy Thompson Novel
By Patricia Briggs
Moon Called was fun from beginning to end. Mercy Thompson is a mechanic who can shift into a coyote at will. She grew up with a pack of werewolves and now lives next door to the Alpha wolf in the town she lives in. Then Mac a new werewolf stops at her shop looking for work, and bringing a heap of trouble with him. He is a hard worker and Mercy likes him but he is being chased by some strange humans and more werewolves. They call Adam the area Alpha in to help but it turns out the strange new pack of wolves is actually after Adam.
Mercy takes Adam back to the pack where she grew up to help him heal after an attack where they drugged him before they nearly killed him. They also needed to make a plan to find his kidnapped daughter. She brings back Samuel, a very powerful wolf from the North American alpha pack, to help with the investigation. There are a lot of twists and turns as they find out who is behind the horrible acts of kidnapping an alphas daughter and developing drugs that work on werewolves. There is also something about Mercy that they only show you a glimpse of in this book and it really made me more interested to see what comes next.
I really loved the characters in this book, I found myself really enjoying them even some of the minor characters. I loved how bringing Samuel back with her from her hometown made Adam jealous. I loved how both men wouldn’t admit they liked Mercy yet the practically fought over her a few times. Mercy doesn’t know how she feels about either man except she doesn’t want to feel like they have laid claim to her, she wants to choose. I also really liked Adams’ daughter she was spunky but not stupid and her interactions with Mercy added some light hearted humor to the book.
I particularly liked that Mercy was strong but didn’t act overly tough. She didn’t do much sassing with the wolves. She knew her place so to speak even though she didn’t like it, because she knew how the pack worked. On the other hand when she really needed to do something outside pack regulations she didn’t hesitate because she does not actually belong to a pack since she is a coyote. I guess I liked her because she was smart most of the time not mouthing off in every conversation like a lot of heroines do. I also liked the hint of romance in the book and appreciated that Briggs didn’t have here jumping into bed with the two werewolves that liked her.
I give this book 4 out of 5 stars. I found it very entertaining but there were some things out of place and several grammatical errors. I usually can ignore them but it took me a while a few times to figure out what she meant. There were also a few terms that must have been more modern slang that I didn’t quite get. There nothing I found offensive but there was violence and some swearing but not much.
