Rooms by Lauren Oliver || Release date: September 2014

The New York Times bestselling author of Before I Fall and the Delirium trilogy makes her brilliant adult debut with this mesmerizing story in the tradition of The Lovely Bones, Her Fearful Symmetry, and The Ocean at the End of the Lane—a tale of family, ghosts, secrets, and mystery, in which the lives of the living and the dead intersect in shocking, surprising, and moving ways

Wealthy Richard Walker has just died, leaving behind his country house full of rooms packed with the detritus of a lifetime. His estranged family—bitter ex-wife Caroline, troubled teenage son Trenton, and unforgiving daughter Minna—have arrived for their inheritance.

But the Walkers are not alone. Prim Alice and the cynical Sandra, long dead former residents bound to the house, linger within its claustrophobic walls. Jostling for space, memory, and supremacy, they observe the family, trading barbs and reminiscences about their past lives. Though their voices cannot be heard, Alice and Sandra speak through the house itself—in the hiss of the radiator, a creak in the stairs, the dimming of a light bulb.

The living and dead are each haunted by painful truths that will soon surface with explosive force. When a new ghost appears, and Trenton begins to communicate with her, the spirit and human worlds collide—with cataclysmic results.

Elegantly constructed and brilliantly paced, Rooms is an enticing and imaginative ghost story and a searing family drama that is as haunting as it is resonant.

But deep down, and against her better judgment, Stella can’t help but feel she’s falling under Chet’s spell.

Unfortunately, she also has to deal with Dusty Falconer, Chet’s hotheaded and rule-breaking younger brother whom Stella feels an unwanted but irresistible attraction to. As the hot Nebraskan summer wears on, Stella tries to settle into her new life.

But when she receives a threatening message on her doorstep, she fears she might never outrun her past. Is it possible she’s not as safe in small town Nebraska as the authorities would have her believe?

Phew! And that is it for this month's round-up. I could have kept going with the covers, but I decided to stop right where I was before things got out of hand! So many good books featured this time round. I'm very excited to read Conversion by Katherine Howe. I think that one sounds AMAZING. Unfortunately I was declined on Netgalley. Hate when that happens!

Edgewater also sounds AMAZING. I love anything Grey Gardens. Can't wait to get my hands on that one. Also, LOVE the sound of Even in Paradise.

Let me know your favourites in comments!

Oh, and new Cat Clarke. Super duper excited!

Lenah Beaudonte should be dead. But having sacrificed herself to save another, she finds herself awakening with strange powers that are neither vampire nor human - and a new enemy on her trail. In her vampire life, Lenah had thought that being human was all she ever wanted; but the human heart suffers pain, heartbreak and loss. With her new powers growing and the dark force of the Nex after her soul, Lenah faces a choice: between the mortal love of gorgeous Justin, whose passion fed her human soul, and taking a different path to become the mistress of her own destiny, wherever that may lead ..

Vampire novels – they get a bad rep. I know people who say that vampire novels are done – that nobody reads them anymore. And I know people who won't read about vampires no matter what. They hopped on the scary train to dystopia-ville a long time ago, and they won’t be back.  It seems to me that YA vampire novels became a victim of their own success a while back and now everybody is suffering from that bad post-Twilight hangover that seemed to spawn a thousand, sometimes good, sometimes really not so good, Twi-alikes.  But what if there was a vampire novel that was different from all the rest?

That was the feeling I had when I read Rebecca Maizel’s debut novel Infinite Days two years ago.  Infinite Days breathed new life into the somewhat jaded vampire genre, offering us Lenah Beaudonte, a Vampire Queen who wanted nothing more than to be a normal human girl.  Now, vampires who want to be human, who want to live, breathe, bleed and die, just like humans do.  That’s different. It’s interesting.

If Infinite Days re-vamped (sorry, couldn't help myself!) a tired genre, then Stolen Night has completely turned it on its head.  This is a book where the rules have all been unwritten, where nothing is set in stone, and where you should expect the unexpected. Always.

As Stolen Night opens Lenah Beaudonte should be dead.  After all she sacrificed herself for her former coven member Vicken in the same ritual that saw her lose her true love Rhode forever. But Lenah’s not dead.  She’s still a regular human girl with a totally hot human boyfriend.  But there’s also a new guy in Lenah’s life in the shape of the chain-smoking ex-vampire, Vicken.  So, the ritual did work. It just didn’t kill Lenah. And if Lenah didn’t die, then maybe…Well, you’ll just have to find out where I was headed with that sentence by reading the book for yourself.  Safe to say, Stolen Night is a total thrill ride with startling twists at every turn.  You’ll be shocked and surprised, that I can guarantee!

One of the only things that really irked me about Infinite Days was the character of Justin Enos, Lenah’s now boyfriend.  I felt he paled in comparison to Rhode, the love of Lenah’s life who we got to know (and I totally fell for) in flashback form in the first book.  In Stolen Night I wanted something more for Justin. I wanted something to happen that would make him less run-of-the-mill normal, and dare I say it, less boring.  I’m not going to go into details, because that would spoil the surprise, but I will say that I got my wish, and I’ll also say that Justin’s journey in this book was nothing short of a masterstroke by Maizel.

A total page turner throughout, Stolen Night finished on a cliffhanger and left me wanting more already.  I haven’t heard any official confirmation of a third book as of yet, but there has to be one, right? It can’t end like this. I need to know what happens next!

Book Review: Infinite Days by Rebecca Maizel.

Product details:
Publisher: St. Martin's Griffin.
Paperback, 310 pages.
Release date: August 3rd 2010.
Ages: Young Adult.
Rating: 3½ out of 5.
Series: Vampire Queen #1.

Lenah Beaudonte is, in many ways, your average teen: the new girl at Wickham Boarding School, she struggles to fit in enough to survive and stand out enough to catch the eye of the golden-boy lacrosse captain. But Lenah also just happens to be a recovering five-hundred-year-old vampire queen. After centuries of terrorizing Europe, Lenah is able to realize the dream all vampires have -- to be human again. After performing a dangerous ritual to restore her humanity, Lenah entered a century-long hibernation, leaving behind the wicked coven she ruled over and the eternal love who has helped grant her deep-seated wish.

Until, that is, Lenah draws her first natural breath in centuries at Wickham and rediscovers a human life that bears little resemblance to the one she had known. As if suddenly becoming a teenager weren’t stressful enough, each passing hour brings Lenah closer to the moment when her abandoned coven will open the crypt where she should be sleeping and find her gone. As her borrowed days slip by, Lenah resolves to live her newfound life as fully as she can. But, to do so, she must answer ominous questions: Can an ex-vampire survive in an alien time and place? What can Lenah do to protect her new friends from the bloodthirsty menace about to descend upon them? And how is she ever going to pass her biology midterm?

For lovers of vampire fiction, even those of you who are becoming a little jaded with the genre, try this! Rebecca Maizel is a new author on the block, and in her debut novel she has created a unique vampire world, one in which all vampires have one ultimate wish, and that is to become human again. In this book a vampires existence is a doomed one, bringing nothing but pain, misery and suffering. You’ve never quite read a vampire book like this, right?

Lenah Beaudonte is a five hundred year old vampire queen who has just had this dream fulfilled by her vampire lover, Rhode. We meet her reborn as a sixteen year old schoolgirl, trying to readjust to human life and fit in at the prestigious Wickham Boarding School. She’s alone and pretty unsure of the ways of the world she now inhabits. She also faces a serious threat from her coven of vampires once they find out that she is no longer their ruthless vampire Queen, but just a normal human girl made of flesh and blood…

There were a lot of aspects of this story that I loved. Maizel alternates between Lenah’s life as a schoolgirl and her previous existence as a vampire queen. This takes us back hundreds of years and lends a historical aspect to the book, which I loved. As a vampire queen Lenah was vicious and ruthless - killing without mercy and thinking of nobody but herself and her quest for blood. In her incarnation as a teenage girl, Lenah’s still thinks like a vampire at times, which makes for some witty asides, and adds some humour to proceedings.

My only major problem with this book was the relationship between Lenah and her new love interest, Justin Enos. He’s the number one hottie at Wickham, and quickly drops his ‘mean-girls’ type girlfriend once Lenah arrives on the scene. For me, Justin pretty much looked upon Lenah as a trophy girlfriend, and while these two declare themselves to be deeply and utterly in love after all of five minutes, I didn’t really sense any deep connection between them at all. I'm a total romantic, and I love a good love story, but this one just didn‘t work for me. I also felt that the second part of the book suffered in it’s pacing. Lenah’s coven are presented to us as being a major threat to her existence, but when that threat happened, it felt somewhat rushed and fell a little flat for me.

Apart from this though, I enjoyed reading this book . It’s a strong debut, and I loved Maizel’s unique take of vampire mythology. The writing style worked well and the character of Lenah and her re-integration into society was interesting to read. The book also ends on a surprising note, and I need to find out what happens next! I’m looking forward to reading the second instalment in the Vampire Queen series, Stolen Nights, published 2011. Maybe Lenah will find herself a new boyfriend in this one…

You have to watch the trailer for this one too.  This is the first time I've posted a trailer to accompany my WoW pick, so you gotta believe me, it's good!

I'm really excited for this one! I love vampire fiction, and this sounds like a really unique take on the genre. Also, I can't believe the UK/Ireland release date is so far off. I can't wait!! How about the covers? They are quite different. The US cover first caught my eye because it is so different from the covers that you usually get on vampire books. The UK cover, though, has my heart. It's all dark and gothic. I love it! Can you tell I'm kind of excited for this book?!
