December 22, 2014

Carson's letter was short and sweet today.  We mostly chatted about what time he would call on Christmas.  Only 3 days away now!  Can't wait!!!

hahah wow t hat is powerful. Sounds like a very eventful week. um for me i have been transferred again i m now in Riruta and my companion is a Kenyan from Eldoret Elder Njugua i think. But ya after that not much has happened this week tuesday we worked.
Wednesday DDM
Thursday Transferred hung out with the aps.
Friday hung out with office Elders helped out with that funny work then i went to my new area
Saturday Christmas party eat food kabisa
Sunday Church introduced myself and had a baptism and a DA and ate more more food.
Of this week was a good one.
Next week i can't say we will be working for the most part. Wednesday we will have DDM in Upperhill. and thursday we will be at presidents house having a christmas party. after that ?????? probably more work but ya lots of fun bouncing over here really enjoying. Hope all is well with you but i think u said to phone around 7 right... thats hopefully when i ll call so just be ready. He so thanks for writing talk to u on thursday love you lots

Sounds like a great week!  How long has your new companion been out?  Dad asked if he's a full time missionary or is he a service missionary?  How far is Riruta from Nairobi?
How was working with the office Elder "funny work"?
Sounds like a party at the Presidents house will be awesome.  Hope you have fun with that.
Just so I'm sure...are you calling at 7 your time or 7 am my time?  Sorry...just want to be ready!

Dad wants to know if you have a swahili book of mormon.  If everyone over there has a different dialect....are they still able to use the swahili book?

Ya Elder Njugnua has been out for 7 months and is a full time missionary but a visa waiter he is suppose to serve in Cape Town but because of his visa he is serving here. Ya doing refferals and other funny office stuff, It was alot of fun... ya even me.
Um ya you can usually use swahili over here but English is the national language her so most people know English so we teach in english, but ya i have the triple comp in swahili and a bible in swahili but i don't know how good the translation is like in English because i don't think it is the King james version. People who own the rights to the King James version will not let the church print it out in Swahili???????????

Sounds awesome!

Hate to be a pain...but can I ask again what time you'll call on Christmas? I know you said 7...is that your time or mine?  Right now it is 7:43 am my time...is it 5:43 pm for you?
Carson...you'll never believe it...I just looked up Riruta....and it's next to the Ngong racecourse for Thouroughbreds.  That got dad's attention!!!

Wow that is awesome heheh. like how close. um ya 5:43 ya pretty close to there
ok so i m out of time so i ll talk to u more on Thursday love you lots Carson

So you'll be calling at 5 ish pm your time....which will be about 7 am my time right?

ya ok thats what i ll do

This week we sent Carson some pictures of a badger that Ken shot.  The nasty thing was tearing up our field and leaving these HUGE piles of dirt all over.  We couldn't believe the amount of turf this little critter could move!  As Carson would say..."Powerful!!"

Ya hey dad. Well this week has been interesting. my companion left on Thursday and i was with the aps on until friday when i got news i ll be transferred to a new area. I ll be serving in Riruta ward. Kindo of sad to leave lucky summer but i m really liking Riruta this ward is nothing like any of the wards i have served in, They are all great and unified, We went to their Christmas party and everybody brought food and we ate and ate... they had so much food people had to take some home. and the branch didn't even spend one shilling which was very very powerful. Reminds me of the home ward everybody is happy not to many problems and everybody is friends. for sure miss home but i think i ll be enjoying this ward while i m here. But ya after that all is well. I hope to be able to work hard in this ward and help them out. Sounds like news is continuing to spread all over i hope everybody is doing good that side. ya well hope work is going good that side. oh and shooting those badgers eh, hehehe that was a big one yo. love you lots and i ll talk more on Thursday when i call.  Love you lots
Thanks for writing
Carson

Here's Carson's letters to Grandma and Grandpa.  They asked him to look up this hymn....

"I need you to go to your hymn book page 319, 3rd verse When I think of this I know that my grandson is doing the things that make him the most happy, the most rewarding, and I love you more than I know how to say."

  1. Hymn #319   Ye Elders of Israel
    1. Ye elders of Israel, come join now with me
And seek out the righteous, where'er they may be-
In desert, on mountain, on land, or on sea--
And bring them to Zion, the pure and the free.
  2. (Chorus)
    O Babylon, O Babylon, we bid thee farewell;
We're going to the mountains of Ephraim to dwell.
  3. 2. The harvest is great, and the lab'rers are few;
But if we're united, we all things can do.
We'll gather the wheat from the midst of the tares
And bring them from bondage, from sorrows and snares.
  4. 3. We'll go to the poor, like our Captain of old,
    And visit the weary, the hungry, and cold;
We'll cheer up their hearts with the news that he bore
And point them to Zion and life evermore.
  5. Text: Cyrus H. Wheelock, 1813-1894
Music: Thomas H. Bayly, 1797-1839, adapted

I tried to find his new area on the map.  I think this is it.  Funny that there's a horse race track just south of his area.  What are the odds?

December 18, 2014

Surprise, surprise, surprise!!!  We got a letter from Carson today!  In my last letter I asked Carson to write a nice Christmas letter to the ward.  And then today...this is what I got in my email box!  (I couldn't figure out how to make it show up in just one screen.)

Christmas letter (Just for u)
I hope this is what u wanted.  Had lots of fun writing it

So I was curious what it was that he was writing in swahili and decided to put it into the google translate and see what happened.

This is what I typed in:

sasa hii ni ushahuda wangu najua kwamba hii injili ni kwelina na yesu kristo ni mwona wa mungu. Na pia mungu ni baba yetu.  Anapenda na anajua sisi soyote.  Najua kanisa la yesu kristo la watakataifu wa siku zamwisho ni kweli sana. Na uko miss sana nyinyi wote.  Nakupenda saa pia nata ona nyinyi tena bradaye.  Na sema yota katicha jina la yesu kristo.  Amina.

mzee wapatco Williams

And this is what it translated into:

now this is my the faith I know that this gospel is truth and with Jesus Christ is seen of God. And also God is our father. He loves us and knows us soyote. I know the Church of Jesus Christ of will kataifu the last time is very true. And they're very miss you all. I love you at too sticky bradaye see you again. And said Yota katicha name of Jesus Christ. Amen.

wapatco elder Williams

I thought it was kind of cool that we could at least piece together parts of what looks like him bearing his testimony to us. Thanks Carson!

December 15, 2014

We've been having some "technical" difficulties with our computer so I'm not quite up to date on this blog thing.  So sorry that this is kind of late.

hahahah love you lots to mom... sounds like everything is going great that side...
For us not much has happened.
Tuesday. Went to a orphanage and saw some kids we will be going there and seeing them teaching kidogo and playing some games when school starts up again.
Wednesday we had a ZTM it was good good trainings and after we played soccer. Ha ha we split up the teams... and then we took it to them... ha ha i forgot the score but both sides scored alot i scored like 6 or something it was awesome. Tell taylor i m all ready and practiced up so i ll be ready to take her any day of the week.
Thursday We recovered from football
Friday -saturday we worked and hung out had some fun.
Sunday Went to church not much after that
I remember u tried to get me to do this last year. um maybe i ll try something and see what i can come up with
Well love you lots that is me and i hope your week will be a good one and the weather improves
Love you lots

So good to hear from you.  Didn't think you'd make it today!  It's 7:30 here.  What time is it for you right now?

Sounds like you're working (playing) hard!  Love it!

Any other plans today?

it is about 2 or 3 some where in there
Not really just cleaned the house and went to the mall to play some puse ball but after that it is pretty much eat wash clothes and overall prepare for the coming week

What is puse ball?

Too bad you couldn't come clean my house too.  It's kind of a disaster this week.  The visiting teachers are coming tomorrow so I have to get it tidied or who knows who will show up at my door!

that soccer game dad likes it and i think Brian has it at his house.

Oooh....Foosball!  Gotcha now.  Are you any good at it?  I never did catch on to how to play that game very well.

What's the weather like over there?  It's so cold and icy here...I hope you're getting warmed up over there.

im out of practise my comp destroyes in it though but they also have an ice hockey table so it is like ok fuseball cool but come i ll take u out in ice hockey.
Pretty mild not too much going on. ha ha ha my only fear is what happens in 8-9 months...

In 8-9 months...it will only be August/September.  You'll have time to adjust before the REAL cold weather hits.  I'll buy you some big sweaters and coats and wool socks though...just in case.

So my ipod says it's 5:58 over there in Nairobi.  I hope we're not keeping you out past curfew.  Or is it totally wrong?

What was your favorite missionary moment of the week this last week?

no no don't worry no worries all is well.
um all i can think off is soccer when we are playing having lots of fun and just relaxing

That's not a missionary moment!!!!!   That's a missionary playtime/timeout!  You're funny!  I was hoping to hear about maybe a teaching moment you had this week.

What was the orphanage like?

Have you got any more packages lately?

Hey so we are almost out of time love you lots and i hope all is going well your side,
Carson
talk more next week

Ok...see you later.  Love you lots and lots

Mom

um we didin't really go in because it is closed until January but pretty much it is a big building with a lot of kids running around it...
Not yet but soon i guess it helps when the assistants are in our district and we see them almost every wednesday,

Here's his letter to Ken:

ha ha dad sounds like everything is going good that side. ya everything is going good here. I agree with you that getting sent home is not probably the best thing. President Hicken even has told us that sending missionaries home is probably the worst part of being a mission president. but that is not something i want so i ll just do what is right and continue with that.
Wow that sounds awesome with everybody hope all is going well your side, But i don't think Kaylee could get close enough to the deer to shoot it with a bow that would be something i would want to see.
And also Taylor ice fishing hmmm maybe... You know here we eat some fish and it is very interesting, They fry them and then eat everything... Tail, body and head... You would be surprised actually the brain doesn't taste to bad has an interesting flavour to it...
Ya well here all is going good. Work is progressing and we are preparing for christmas. Here i don't exactly know but it seems that all of the missionaries will be going to Either the office or Presidents home for Christmas to eat food and to enjoy im excited. But more excited to talk to you guys and see how your doing... But i hope this time you guys don't laugh at my funny accent... please... oh well looking forward to hope you are doing well and that work and the horse haven't tired you out. Hope you are ready when i get back because i ll be challenging you and the mzee Grandpa to a good basketball game... Hope you are ready. Any way love you lots and talk more to ya next week

We got a letter from Carson's mission president this week.  I can't figure out how to just scan it and post it here...so I'll just type it out.

17 Nov 2014

To the Family of Elder Carson Ty Williams:

We are happy to inform you that Elder Williams, through prayer and inspiration, has been called to serve as District Leader in the Kenya Nairobi Mission.  This call represents wonderful personal preparation and dedicated service during his mission.  We are grateful for his righteous example,  integrity and leadership skills.

This is a calling of Priesthood leadership and responsibility.  As District Leader, he will be called upon to teach and set an example of missionary work for his District.  He will be responsible to encourage missionaries, set the standard for the district, and to testify and teach through example and dedicated service.  Because of his leadership skills and the respect the missionaries have for him, we know that Elder Williams will be successful in this responsibility and will have a wonderful lasting influence upon those he serves.

Thank you for raising such a wonderful son.  We trust him and rely upon his strengths and abilities in moving forward the gospel of Jesus Christ in the Kenya Nairobi Mission.  The missionaries respect him and look to him as an example of dedicated service to the Lord.  We want you to know that he is living up to his fullest potential and is serving with his heart, might, mind and strength.

We love Elder Williams, and know that you do also, and are very proud of him.  We value the service he is giving to our Heavenly Father and we value the example he sets for everyone around him.  Thank you again for raising such a good, trusted and respected son.

Sincerely and with my deepest appreciation for you hand in preparing your son for the work of the Lord.

December 8, 2014

We had a very fun weekend this last week.  Grandma and Grandpa Walburger came over Saturday afternoon and took our family to the new movie "Meet the Mormons".  It was great!  After that, we came back to Welling and had a small 3 on 3 basketball game then it was back off to Lethbridge to watch Taylor's soccer game.  Carson enjoyed hearing about my "lack of skill" on the court.  But...my team totally beat Ken's team.  Thanks Grandpa and Taylor for making all those awesome shots while I tried to distract Kaylee and Ashlee.  Fun times!!

oh my goodness mom i m crying and hurting from laughing so hard right now.
what the heck... hahahahaha
dad was super disappointed that he was beaten by his "diabetic daughter, his "bull in a china cabinet, fouling, cheating, arm flailing" wife, and a 70 year old grandpa with a knee replacement, sprained ankle, and was playing in cowboy boots!"
hahahha Bull in a china cabinet what the fetch how did dad come up with that... fouling, cheating, arm flailing" wife (This i believe. *cough* Cough* ) haha wow lots of fun back home i see... haha even though i m not there i m still making people cry scream and giving people head aches ha ha ha 9000 miles away POWERFUL indeed.
hahaha that awesome though sounds like all is well... But what happened next did you take taylor to the hospital leave her at home WHAT HAPPENED NEXT this is like a cliff hanger details what happens now.....
ah ya wow powerful
Well for us not really much happened this week we had a few lessons but lots of people where bouncing us so through out the week. so on saturday we where tired of that crape so we hung out and when it hit 3 people were phoning we are at the church can we see u today. (It is one hour to church and a hour back and then they wanted to see us for a bit) and by our calculation that was around 7 or something so we told them we will see u on Sunday... After that Sunday was a dream lots of people there and really enjoying. But as we where going home i got sickish. Like i really needed to destroy a bathroom. and we where in the middle of a big field so push came to shove i went and found a nice big bush and did the business borrowed some leaves and ya long story short i m good now no more problems but i can't say the same for that bush, Sorry. \
But ya been a short week all is well and it is cool hahah
Love you lots hope to talk some more

Oh Carson...now I'm laughing and crying at the same time too.  You are such a character!
Why would you believe the whole fouling, arm flailing thing?  I'm not that bad am I?  You boys!
Sorry about the cliffhanger...not much happened.  I thought I told you.  Taylor just hung out on the couch.  We checked her sugars every two hours and made sure she was drinking either water or sips of apple juice every 30 - 60 minutes and by one oclock, she was up at the table eating chicken soup.  By the evening...she was back to her normal self again.  Crisis averted!
That's too bad about getting bounced. That must be tough.  But Sunday sounds better.  Too bad about the bush though.  That was kind of gross!  Hopefully you're feeling better today.
Any big plans for this upcoming week?

hahah no i have just see u in action and it my thoughts and memories match the descriptions. ok ok whew.. thats good to here, ya it was just like a 20 min. thing not really a problem now.
Not really ZTM. With the whole zone we go and play football so ya but that is all i can see right now.

The bush suffered more than me so i m good thanks.

I can't believe you all think I'm that bad!  I still have a big fat lip from where Kaylee bashed me with her head!  Wait till you get home and I'll show you my super skills!
How many missionaries in your zone?
So do you just walk there or are you allowed to take a bus or a taxi anywhere?  Do they have many restrictions on your transportation?  Are you allowed to go to a mall or do they tell you to stay out of those places?

oh i plan on it i m ready we will have a big game call the grandaparents and if other family relatives what to participate they can... there is 8 missionaries in our zone.
Walking around basi. Not aloud to use buses. and we only use taxi if we have to go to town or somewhere far, ya we go to the mall when ever but since it is the christmas season we will be staying away from it for a while.

All right...Game on!  I'll be ready!
That's interesting that you are not supposed to use the bus...why is that anyway?  Or should I ask?  I think I know the answer...but I'll ask anyway.
Speaking of the mall and Christmas...do you have anything special planned this year?  Did you save up any of your packages for Christmas morning?  I would like you to remember that there is extra money in your account for Christmas...so I want you to splurge a little on yourself.  You really need to take care of your feet so if your shoes are falling apart...get a new pair.  Or take you and your companion out for a nice dinner somewhere.  And I hope you get a few nice souvenirs for yourself.  Just think in a few years when you are in your own apartment or house...you'll want some nice things to remind you of your time there...so...take care of yourself a little too.  Especially at this time of year!
Any plans to make a christmas tree again this year?

just there has been some things that have happened so it is just a safety precautions. not really just hanging low. and hanging out with everybody for a christmas devotional after that ???? Ya i ll remember that. Not really don't have any thing to make it out of so i m kind of at a lose. Right now.

Hey sorry but i got to go right now. But maybe i ll come back in a few... Love you lots talk more later..

Here's his letter to Ken....

hey dad hey that sounds like alot of fun this week.
YA for sure almost every day i have to say my dad was right atleast once. one day i almost when every hour of the day just think Dang it, that mzee he actually knew what he was talking about...  but ya i have been trying to keep myself with in my budget now since going a few months with over over spending but we ll have to see if i find anything interesting i ll get it. but thanks for the advice i ll keep an eye out eh. But thanks any way...
But how is everything going that side?
Hmm as for us all is well we are having lots of fun. and working hard this side
Love you lots Carson

This is his letter to Grandma.  (She was teasing him about his fear of vegetables.)

haha must be a family thing hahaha even my dad he calls it rabbit food and eats it like a rabbit really really visual like. Not really but mostly we have beans with onions, some green leafy stuff, pilapili hot peppers ya it is pretty eassy to find stuff this side. All is going well kindly slow but all is well the work goes forward either way right. account and just hang out and prepare for the day, Ya it is kindly festive in the malls and stuff but out side it is a monday of the year no different doesn't even feel like Christmas but like june or july or something... ya i ll see what i can do we don't have the same line here but maybe i ll go and buy one just to talk to you guys and some other people. we ll just have to see.

December 1, 2014

24 days till Carson calls home!!!

hey mom wow that is powerful... Got to love heath eh... I m getting excited to see that kid hehehe it will be great. Well for us not much has been going down. pretty much the whole week we have been going around trying to find and teach but people are to busy for use. oh well there lose i guess. probably to most exciting thing that happened was yesterday at church we had a baptism for people it was powerful but the water was really really really cold hehe i had to laugh when they pushed they two under they came up gasping and spraying water every where. haha i really really laughed but i tried to hid it and bear it deep. But everybody else where laughing so ya. But that is bascially it this week really not to much is going down just the same as the last few weeks finding teaching and baptizing pretty much the routine really really awesome. Love you lots and really enjoy reading your letters really tell how crazy home still is. nothing has changed since i left ha ha ha Love you lots hope to chat kidogo (little) before the day ends.
Love Carson

I kind of slept in this morning Carson...are you still there?

ya i m still here whats up

Oh hi Carson!   So glad you're still there!  Thought I may have slept in and missed you!

The baptism sounds like it was a hit.  Why was the water so cold?  Is it always like that?

Any big plans today?

well we filled it the night before and it was already cold from the night chill ya it will always be like that...
not really just chilling maybe go and buy some food because we suffered enough we have money now and were going to eat and enjoy.. ha ha ha thanks eh

What kind of food are you buying today?  What food do you enjoy?
.
Which reminds me...I sent a package this last week to you.  But it's kind of odd.  I put in a bunch of pencils and erasers and stickers that I thought you could give away to any kids you meet.  Or whoever.  But I wish I had thought of it sooner because a lot of it was Christmas themed so...if you get it later than Christmas...it might be kind of lame.  Sorry.  Did you save any of those other Christmas packages I sent you so you had something for Christmas morning?  I can't believe it's already December 1 now...only 24 more days till my favorite Christmas present...a call from Africa!!!  (This is me smiling now!!!!)

noodles bread and floor... Rice and beans and Ugali
hahaha ya that is what i m thinking too i m soo excited but i can't believe it is already dec... Blow me away ehg\

I'm thinking with your steady diet of noodles/bread/flour/rice/and beans...your body won't want any rich food like brownies or steak or pizza buns when you get home.  You won't be used to it!  At least humor me a little and get some apples or oranges or mangos...maybe a side salad!

Oh believe me...I've been thinking about the phone call ever since we hung up on Mother's Day...seven LONG months ago!  I'm worried I won't have anything to ask you...I just want to hear your voice and hear you talk...so you better have lots of stories saved up for us.  I just want to sit and listen and bawl a little and smile a lot!  Can't wait!

ya ya but don't worry my body will change right when i get back so no worries feel free to make all of that good stuff.
oh ok maybe we will have to see you never now...

Ok...I'll be ready...maybe even a cherry pie or two in there.

What do you mean you will have to see me never now?

HAHA MARAHABA (royalties?) that is a good one
We will have too see u know i don't like to talk and to go into details

Wait...what?  Now I'm confused.   It's too early for me and I'm not really understanding what you are saying?  I guess I haven't quite woken up yet.

We put up the Christmas tree last night and thought of you while we put all your ornaments on the tree!  Have you ever found any good ornaments over there?  Have you found any good souvenirs for yourself yet that you want to bring back with you eventually?

hahaha good morning
Not really haven't seen any ornaments. Ya i have found a few

No swords or spears I hope.  What have you found that you like so far?

So mapanga (swords) some masai blankets and some shoes made out of a tire

what's mapanga?  The blankets sound great!  Really...shoes made out of a tire?  Do they have any "tread"?  Ha hahahahahahah!!!  I'm so funny at five thirty in the morning!!!

just a big Masai kisu

Wow that explains so much....what is a kisu?

Knife

Really?  Do you think they'll allow that on the plane?  Good luck with that I guess!

So earlier you said you've been suffering this week.  What was going on?  Just run out of money for food?  or what?

ya so long as it is in my check bag already got through two airports with it. so it must be fine.
just out of money but now we are sustained so all is well

But will it get through the US/Canada airports?  Good luck!

Sorry to hear you were out of money.  We did top up your emergency fund if you ever really need anything.  Hate to think about TOO much suffering going on.  A little suffering is good for the soul...but more than that....

What's the temperature there today?  Getting used to that cold weather there yet?

ya it should be fine...
what doesn't kill ya makes you stronger right.
maybe around room tempt it just rained kidogo so everybody is wearing big jackets and sweaters...
Kindly but it makes me scared to hear about - 30 back home
ya so time to go so good bye until next week eh love you lots

Grandma and Grandpa forwarded me their letter from Carson.  They had a whole list of questions for him so I thought it would make more sense to show their questions and then show Carson's letter.

How is it going this week... anything I can send to you in a parcel? Is it easier to get groceries, clothes, etc. in Kenya? I hope you buy a few things for yourself as mementos of your stay in Africa...

Can you print off the emails? or is it a one shot read?

I'm interested about the things that happen during your regular day. Is everything structured .... so many doors, or service projects or a certain number of people to meet , miles to walk etc.

Let's say you're walking down the road, people are there, maybe kids... How do you start a conversation?  Do you gots a treat in your pocket for a kid.... how do you let them know you are on their side...like "cheering" for them or something. How do you show them you're a kind and happy, "COOL" guy?

Hey grandma hey this week has been a fast one. not much to report but we had a baptism yesterday which was really nice two people, potential missionaries it was powerful. ya big stores and mall this side so no worries anymore. haha really wow welcome back to Canadian weather. haha i ll have fun when i get back that side. ha ha. ya well have to see what happens. haha ya i can print these emails. but it cost some money to print them. ya but how is it that side? Looks pretty cold./.. haha love you lots talk more next week
Carson

Hey babu how is it...
Every thing is cool this side having lots of fun and enjoying... some how but not to much in detail we set goals to see people teach lessons and to talk to people but after that it is up to the spirit to lead us where to go. all we have is a curfew of 6 we have to be home by 6 because apparently this side after 6 it becomes very very dangerous.
When u see people u just start talking to them just ask how they are doing where they are going and they just go from there. just always seem happy have a smile on and just be kind. No the only treat i have in my pocket is for me...  haha powerful hey thanks for that and u too eh... Love you lots hope you have a good week and good luck with clearing all of that snow eh...
Carson

Here's his letter to Ken...

Hey Dad
That sounds awesome and im alittle bit jealous hunting with randy and all of that...
ya but your write for sure i would just like to be left alone in my area and no other worries. but leadership is flipping hard not only do you have to watch out for others but also u have to be the example and alot of people can be stubborn. They say "Why can't we do this by whose authority" or even better (This one makes me laugh.) they say "Is this u saying it or is this President Hicken." WHAT DIFFERENT DOES IT MAKE!!! hahaha "We want Pres. to phone we don't want to talk to you." Hahah are you serious ok if that is what you really want.
haha for sure. there is some of these people we call campaigners here there always trying to impress pres by reporting there companions or reporting there leaders. Even some on exchanges or something go looking through peoples bags.
Those people make me laugh... Maybe it is just what you and mom taught me but i just feel that from my childhood and from other teachings that campaigning and looking around and trying to be a tattletale just doesn't work. in fact it works against you and nothing happens usually. So i guess thanks for teaching me that so i could be prepared for mission...
hahaha u wouldn't believe some people here just what they say and just the stories that i have heard... just makes me wonder about some people and there parents are they just crazy or what...
I m for sure glad i had great parents like u guys to teach me and to help prepare me for all of this. Thanks again.
Love you lots Sorry about the cold... Hope all goes well this week. Good luck eh
