4th of July

The Embassy goes all out for the 4th of July celebrations.  We began the week with the formal party at the Ambassador's house.  This party is attended by some members of the embassy community and then a number of foreign attachés and Jordanian military and political figures.  On the actual 4th of July we had the family-fun party.  The kids had a great time and the fireworks were surprisingly good.

Aunt TiTi comes to visit

Christine came to Amman for a week at the end of her worldwide post Afghanistan tour.  We had such a wonderful time with her and really miss her now that she is back in Colorado enjoying her life as a big bad first lieutenant.  I was absolutely terrible at taking pictures while she was here and got none of her and the kids together though she spent almost every minute with them.  I will post some more pictures once she sends me the ones from her camera.  Here are just two from our girls afternoon at the Dead Sea.

Owen's two month birthday and a few other pictures

Here are a few pictures from Owen’s two month birthday (June 19th), although the pictures were taken a few days late.  Owen has turned into such a wonderfully happy, smiley baby and we cannot get enough of him.  Dylan continues to love her role as big sister (though she gives Ben and I some heavy doses of attitude lately).

Promotion

Promotion to Major, June 14, 2012

Perhaps the most special part of my parents visit was their attendance at my promotion ceremony.  Although I was promoted on February 1st, I decided to wait and have the formal ceremony until my parents were there and I could actually fit in my uniform.  Although there are over 300 people that work at the embassy, I was fortunate enough to have the Ambassador not only preside over the ceremony but actually host the event at his house (it helps to be friends with his personal assistant :).  My boss officiated the promotion and my parents and Ben did the pinning on.  We had a promotion party at the Embassy club following the ceremony and too much fun was had my all involved!  It was a really special day and meant the world to me that my family was a part of it (although I missed the girls).

Here are a few pictures; unfortunately we did not get any good ones of the big group or the party

The pinning on- I am all teary eyed after getting emotional during my speech

The Guest House and Cave Bar

The Guest House and Cave Bar

Perhaps the coolest part of our Petra trip was the awesome accommodations and incredible hospitality of our Disney World friend, Nabil.  So…to back track, last summer we were standing in an absurdly long line at Animal Kingdom in hopes of meeting Minnie Mouse for the 100th time when I noticed the guy in front of us was wearing a hat that said “Petra.”  I told him that we were moving to Jordan the following year and wondered if he had been there before.  He said that he was actually Jordanian and was the manager of two of the resort hotels in Petra.  I motioned for Ben to come over and they became fast friends.  Nabil gave Ben his card and told him to call before we visited Petra.  Ben corresponded with Nabil a few times after moving to Jordan and when it came time for us to actually visit Petra, Nabil booked us the hotel, arranged for a private guide and had his hotel staff cook us a private Jordanian BBQ on the terrace of our hotel rooms.  We enjoyed the classic Mezza (hot and cold appetizers), Shish tawuk (chicken), beef and lamb kebobs, fresh fruit, and wine while we watched the sun set over the valley.  It was an awesome night.

Within the hotel, there is a famous bar built into the cave called “the Cave Bar” and each little table is situated in an old tomb- it was very cool (temperature and atmosphere).

Petra

Petra

After spending a down day in Amman, we packed up the family van, Griswold style, and all eight of us traveled to the ancient city of Petra in Wadi Musa (Valley of Moses).   Petra is an incredible destination and was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985 and one of the New Seven Wonders of the World in 2007.  The city itself is carved into terraced sandstone cliffs and has served as the backdrop for two of Ben’s favorite movies (Indiana Jones and Transformers).  Petra literally means “rock” in Greek and served as the capital of the Nabataen Kingdom from the 6th century BC until it was conquered and absorbed into the Roman Empire in the second century AD.  It was used as a spice trade capital for the region and is perhaps best known for its intricate water management systems and dams that prevented flash flooding through the valley.

Our whole crew began the Petra adventure at 7am and ended the long hike with a much needed lunch at around 1pm.  At that point the four hearty members of the crew (Ben, Jim, Heidi, and Joanne) completed the famous hike up to the monastery and my mom and I took the kids back to the hotel where we immediately fell asleep in front of the air conditioner.

Here are some pictures from the Petra hike:

Only an hour or so into the walk- everyone looking energetic

Both kids in carriers- glad we brought the hiking pack for Dylan to remedy the "i can't walk any further, it is too hot" line that occurred every twenty minutes.

I love the timeless feel of this picture.
