Little Girl Purses

Awhile back I asked my followers what patterns they would like to see.  Mary A said she would love to see some cute little purses, for her granddaughters, 18 months to 6 years old. The little ones will not be able to have a handle or strap that can go around the neck. She said she would love owl, monkey or cat purses, maybe even a cute little winter hat to match.

I haven't come up with a hat yet, but here is the purse pattern.

I love these little chinese change purses, so I thought they would make a great inspiration.

Materials

  • G Hook
  • Yarn--this project is fairly small so I just used left over yarn that I had in contrasting colors.  You can use worsted weight and/or DK weight yarn.
  • Small piece of fabric (I bought a small piece meant for quilting at Walmart for .97 cents)

  • Tapestry needle

Abbreviations
Rnd--round                             ch(s)--chain(s)                              sc(s)--single crochet(s)                             hdc(s)--half double crochet      dc(s)--double crochet(s)               tr(s)--triple or treble crochet

Purse Strap

Leaving a long end, make a chain in a contrasting color to the length you want, then sl st in the 2nd ch from the hook and in each ch to the end. Fasten off leaving an end long enough to weave back to the other end of the strap and long enough to sew onto the purse.

If you would like to make a fancier cord you can try making an I cord, although I found it a bit tedious.

Assembly

Using the body of the purse, make a pattern for the lining, drawing it about 1/2" larger.

Do the same for the Gusset.

Fold part of the fabric over, so you can cut 2 of the body of the purse and then lay the gusset on a single layer of fabric so that sideways, in order to cut it on the bias (this will make the gusset stretchier.)

Cut out the pieces.

Mark a dashed line 1/4" deep onto the wrong side of the fabric on all pieces.

Pin the gusset, right sides facing, to one of the body of purse pieces.

Sew down a small seem on the top of the gusset on each side, then sew the gusset onto the body of purse along dashed line.  I used back stitch.

Pin the other body of purse piece on to the other side of the gusset, right sides facing.  Then sew them together along the dashed lines.

Sew the crocheted gusset onto the crocheted body of purse pieces.

Put the lining inside the purse and sew it down, turning the edges under.

Embroider eyes, nose and mouth onto cat.

Sew the paws onto the head and then embroider lines onto them.

First sew the little purse onto one of the paws, then sew the body onto the purse, then sew on the head piece.

First attach the strap onto the insde of the purse and then sew on the purse clasp.

To finish the owl, sew on the eyes, then embroider them.

To make the ears thinner and get them to stand up better, weave the yarn back and forth through them 2 or 3 times.

Embroider the beak and then sew the owl on to the front of the purse.

Happy Hooking!!
