Carroll Park Flea Market

When Hubby and I did our spring cleaning last month, we realized that we had a lot of stuff that we were just never going to use again. For him, it was mostly old records and for me, books that I had gotten at flea markets, read once, and knew I'd never read again.

The Carroll Park Flea Market in Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn was coming up so we decided to give it a go. My parents were excited about purging too and gave us 2 bags full of nearly new stuffed animals that the twins had never really liked. All the proceeds from the tables go directly to maintaining the park, so it was a win-win all around. Help the community and make some moolah with the stuff we were going to trash anyway.

We arrived early, double parked just like everyone else, and unloaded Grandpa's car. Hubby pointed out a parking spot and I ran over to grab it. I was sleepy as all get out and nothing much was going on in my head other than the thought of COFFEE, COFFEE, COFFEE. To make matters worse, there was a Dunkin Donuts across the street, looking wonderful and fabulous and full of caffeinated promise.

I got out of the car, locked the automatic doors, and slammed the doors shut. Hubby looks at me with horror and point to the inside of the car, where I left the keys in the ignition. The best part is that I left the car running! DOH! The COFFEE thought switched over to things I can't politely say on this blog. I called my dad, who was nice enough to pick up the spare keys from Grandpa and drive them over to me. I think dad wanted to make me sweat it out because he didn't show up for an hour! Carroll Gardens is only about 20 minutes from Sunset Park with traffic. I learned my lesson dad, I promise.

After the car drama, I ran over to DD and caffeinated myself, thus eliminating any further stupidity for the day.

Here is Carroll Park from across the street. If anyone has seen the movie The Object of my Affection with Jennifer Aniston and Paul Rudd, this is the park they live across the street from in that movie. It wasn't a good movie, but just sayin.

The woman on the left was reading people's futures. Apparently, everyone had a happy future because nobody left crying. The lady on the right was selling adorable hand made dresses. The flea market had a little of everything from old to new to vintage to crap. We sold a good chunk of our own stuff and made a cool $130 in profit, after paying for our table. Not bad for stuff that was going to get dumped. After we packed up and left, we drove to the Salvation Army and donated everything else.

There was a table right across from us that had had enough of the sun by 3:30 or so and started giving away the rest of their stuff for free. I wandered over and picked up a pair of grey arm warmers. Work is always cold and I thought if I bought a cheap pair, I wouldn't worry about someone stealing them. Cheap indeed...they gave them to me for free!

I also bought some buttons from Sue Rock Originals Everyone, Inc. Sue's husband noticed I was crocheting in my booth and wandered over to talk to me about their charity. They are a textile charity and in addition to monetary help, they sew, knit, and crochet for women who are trying to rebuild their lives from domestic violence. They offer all sorts of classes at their studio as well. Sue and her husband receive donations from yarn, fabric, and design companies, so she said anyone was welcome to come pick up yarn or fabric and make something for these ladies. Sue's husband knits and sews himself, which is pretty awesome. I think its an amazing idea and will definitely be helping in the future.

Warning: extreme jealousy to follow. Please place a bib on now for all the drooling that is going to follow.

When our booth became a little slow towards the end of the day, Hubby sent me off to look at a booth where an older woman was selling fabric in large boxes. I went over and started looking through it all and the woman started a conversation with me. She has sewn all her life and loves it. She had her one and only daughter when she was 42 and had collected a huge stash of cotton fabric, hoping to one day sew for her own grandchildren. Her daughter is now 32 and apparently has no plans for children, so she decided to pass the fabric on at super cheap prices and in her own words, make people happy.

I mentioned how I was learning to sew and was scared to buy and mess up expensive fabric. She was so sweet, giving me tips on how to cut, how to wash, and how to put fabric together to make unique designs. She asked me if I had kids and I told her yes and described my Pipster. We must have spent at least 20 minutes gabbing away. I asked how much the fabric was and she laughed and told me to pick out what I wanted and we would make a good deal.

All of the fabric was quilting cotton. I grabbed a whole stack full, not counting the yardage listed on each one. The lady came over and started pulling more fabric, showing me how to mix and match them. It was obvious that sewing and designing is this woman's passion. After I had my arms full to bursting, I asked how much it would all be, expecting her to count the yardage and calculate a price. Not a chance! She asked me for $10 and a promise that I would continue sewing.
I counted the yardage when I got home and there is 28 yards of fabric. 28 yards! For $10! That's less than 36 cents a yard for 100% cotton. Happy Dance! The red fabric with the hearts on it has the original receipt on it with the purchase date. She bought that fabric in 1984!

She threw in 12 5" quilting squares for free too! Happy indeed!

Oh, and this is the baby blanket I was making while in my booth. Its just a plain old granny square and is about 14" right now. Once its preemie sized, it'll be heading to the NICU.

I also got a suntan. Goodbye pasty!
Other than the car keys thing, it was a pretty banner day.

Quickie Mom Update

Mom had an MRI last week and the doc decided to take a biopsy today, rather than wait until her scheduled surgery at the end of the month.

Prayers and good thoughts for her today are highly appreciated.

Thanks peeps.

Of mickeys and flies

Hubby and I were walking home from my parent's house this past weekend and who do we see standing out front of my house? The unresponsive landlord. It was clearly too late for him to avoid us, so he does what a jerk would do....gives a big smile and asks if the mouse problem has gotten better.

Say what?!? Dude, did you send the rodent fairies to take care of the issue because you surely didn't do it yourself!

Hubby has repeatedly asked me to be polite because I have a tendency to fly off the handle when I'm angry. But I was mad and wasn't about to be nice. I told dear landlord that no, in fact the problem was worse....way way worse and that we needed an exterminator (duh!) to take care of the issue. You know, the same thing we said when we called and wrote to you about the problem.

The moment I said the word "exterminator" the smile dripped right off of landlord's face. He said that he would drop by on Saturday to take care of the issue.

Saturday ticks by and no landlord.

Sunday afternoon, landlord shows up unannounced. At this point, I just let him in because the problem is too bad to turn him away simply because he showed up on the wrong day. Calendars must not be his strong suit. Way back in April, he said he'd show up the next Saturday and here we are in May. Must be nice to have a long, leisurely, 60 day April. I digress.

Before he starts on "resolving" the issue, he mentions how he spoke to an exterminator, who confirmed for him that we shouldn't leave food out on the counter, as that makes the issue worse.

Again, say WHAT?!?

I cut him off and told him that he can look on our counters and in our cupboards, because we do NOT leave food out or uncovered. In an angry voice, I let him know that we are NOT dirtballs (yes, I used that word). Landlord stutters and backtracks...saying that's not what he meant. Whatever! Move on!

So landlord tinkers in our apartment, making crazy noises, and doing who-knows-what for about an hour. He finished and announces that the problem was probably in the drop ceilings in the basement and he's taken steps to eliminate the problem.

Hubby and I throw the word "exterminator" in again for fun because it obviously makes him squeal. Landlord showed up again on Monday to "check out" his work. I'm just going to start screaming exterminator out of my window every time I have an issue because its the only thing that gets a reaction.

We haven't caught a mouse since then. I'm cautiously hopeful. I don't want to get too excited that the problem is totally resolved because its just too soon to tell. Cross your fingers that the Mickeys are gone for good.

Oh, and about the flies...

Most people get pretty birds and butterflies in their backyards when Spring rolls around. Not us. We get humping flies. My porch banister is apparently quite the love nest.

Tuesday's Tribute

Tuesday's Tribute

Today's Tuesday's Tribute is to indecisiveness.

After packing up my cubicle completely on Friday, we received a memo today stating that the move has been delayed 2 weeks.

!^&$%%#$^&*()(*&^!!!!!!

I spent a portion of today UNPACKING, so I could work from my files the next 2 weeks. Talk about a time suck.

Indecisive people, this one's for you.

The toy parade marches on.

I'm super happy with the 3rd toy for Kristie's toy drive. Its the Knit Owl pattern by Amy Gaines. I saw it on Ravelry and just had to try it. It definitely took longer than a crochet toy, but I love the feel of the different fabric the knit stitches make.

The owl isn't exactly like the picture on the pattern, but I love him. A lot. I almost want to keep him. Pi is a fan too. She slyly mentioned how this owl "could be her newest best friend." LOL Perfect excuse to make another one after the toy drive.

Hope everyone's having a nice Memorial Day!

My very old floppy friend.

First, if you think anything like me, get your head out of the gutter. ;)

I started this little Floppy Friend back in 2007 back before I had a blog. All the pink parts of the bear were done, but I never got around to finishing him after I had gotten hurt. I totally forgot about him until recently when I found all the pink bits stuffed into a gift bag on a shelf.

The pink yarn I used for him is long gone. I can't remember if I had used it for something else or if it just got lost when we moved in 07. I figured a contrasting color couldn't look too bad, so he was finished with an ecru color. I love the combo and think it gives the bear some character. I'm glad to have finished a forgotten UFO and also have another toy for the toy drive. I think you peeps are right...20 toys is doable.

I've started another toy, but this one is knit! I really dig this whole tri-crafty thing. There's no way to get bored.
In other news, we're nearly done with the move for work. I spent all this week packing the last of my desk. The movers will start taking things this week and by Thursday night, our computers will be gone too. I never knew how much stuff you can accumulate and store in a teeny cubicle over the course of six years. I'll be glad when its all over, even though it has been nice to wear jeans on Friday for the last few months!

Happy Saturday peeps! Enjoy the sunshine.

Turtle Dancing

Sorry for skipping Tuesday's Tribute. The week has been....hectic.

Anywho, I realized this week, that the annual toy drive that Kristie runs every year is getting close (P.S. - She's got loads of free toy patterns on her website). She normally makes the toy delivery in August, so I have to get a box out by late July. This might seem like oodles of time, but in a galaxy far far away, someone who I will not name made a promise of 20 handmade toys. No no, not Voldemort. Store bought toys are accepted too, but where's the fun or creativity in that?

When the someone who shall not be named made this promise, the toy drive was still 11 months away. Seemed like plennnnnty of time. Until Mother Nature played a nasty trick on that someone and sped the calendar forward so quickly that suddenly...wait for the BOOM....its MAY!
I figured it was time to get started. My first stuffed toy just seemed appropriate, since I've been moving at a turtle's pace lately. Its THIS pattern from Lion Brand. Really quick and easy....finished him in an evening. The dark green is Caron pounder and the light green is Caron Simply Soft, both of which were partial balls sitting in my stash.

Turtle thinks he looks slimmer from this angle.

Last night, Piper was in her room plotting a takeover of the world playing and I had the tv to myself. To my husband's horror and my glee, Dirty Dancing was on. I did mention I was an 80's child through and through, right? Don't judge (except for Kristina P., who has made a New Year's resolution to judge as much as possible, therefore she is exempt from my non-judge plea).

Patrick Swayze is not my cup of tea, but the movie always made me wish I could dance...or even have an ounce of rhythm. You'd think, being Puerto Rican, that I'd have some rhythm, but no. I'm like the klutzy two left feet black sheep of the family. People go out of their way to avoid dancing with me at parties. :) Its actually really funny.

You might be wondering what this has to do with the turtle or the toy drive. It doesn't. I just haven't had my coffee yet and sharing these random thoughts seemed like a good idea.

Happy Thursday peeps!

She's leaving on a jet plane.

Yesterday, I dropped off my sister Inky Binky at the airport for her first European vacation. She's been working and going to school, so she was able to treat herself to this trip. Her first stop is Frankfurt, then onto another plane to Amsterdam. After a few days there, she'll be in Paris. I wanted to fold myself up as small as possible and sneak into her suitcase.

The morning of her trip, I decided she HAD to have a passport holder. Ok, so she didn't actually need it, but it was a fun excuse to make something different.

I had a passport lying around from when I went on my honeymoon a few years ago. I measured around the passport and added a half inch seam allowance. It's a big seam allowance, but I wanted to make sure it didn't turn out too small.

Inky Binky is left handed, so I added an elastic band on the opposite side of what I would feel comfy using. I figured she could wear this on her wrist in the airport and not have to continually open up her purse for her passport or ID. Add a (crooked) buttonhole, sew the button on and viola!

A small, but satisfying project. We were pretty busy this weekend, so this quelled my craving for something crafty.

Bookworm

Anyone who knows me, knows I love books. Like hugs, heart, kissy kissy kinda love. So this post just makes me tingle with all the new bookness of it all.

Last week, on Friday (this is important), I asked my sister Inky Binky is she needed anything from the bookstore. I had a reward and coupon I wanted to use. She mentioned she needed a book on Pipilotti Rist for a paper due on *drumroll please* Tuesday. See why Friday was important?

I looked up the book online at Borders and Barnes and Noble. Apparently, this book is not common and neither store had it in the store. It could only be ordered online. Since it was Friday, even one day shipping meant it wouldn't arrive until Monday. At a cost of an extra $16. Ouch! Panic ensued. For my sister, that means an exclamation of oh no! She doesn't get too worked up for the most part.

I asked the other 2 girls in my dept. for help to see if we could find it somewhere else. We searched and searched and found nothing, nada zip. Another exclamation of oh no! Then one of them reminded me about Strand books. I'm ashamed to say this since I live in NY, but I've never been there, so that store never crossed my mind. Lo and behold, their website said they had the book. Two copies and at half the price of the regular stores! *Insert angels singing* Inky wouldn't be able to get there before they closed, though, so big sis to the rescue. I picked up the book and dropped it off.

The point of that long story is that sis was very grateful that I found and picked up the book for her, since she was in such a crunch. So grateful that she showed up at my door with this as thank you! I've heard good things about this book. Thanks Inky Binky!

Remember I mentioned that bookstore reward and coupon eleventy billion paragraphs ago? Well, I went into Borders with the intention of buying something I would normally find much too expensive. I bought Weekend Sewing by Heather Ross. I probably won't touch any pattern in this book for awhile because my skills need improving. But for $1,50, how could I go wrong?? You read that right...$1.50! I had a 40% off coupon, plus $15 in Borders Bucks from doing online surveys. Damn, I love being cheap!

This little book was marked down 75% at the clearance table, so I picked this up for $5. Most of the patterns need DPNs, which I don't have, but hope to buy sometime soon.

Now do you see why I'm practically swooning over all this new bookness? :)

In Da' Hood

Pi's love of Etsy is no secret. My favorites section is filled with things that she has tagged for her doll wish list. One of the things on the wish list was THIS pattern for a knit doll hoodie. In a fit of insanity, I bought the pattern, hoping that the "easy" label was the truth.

I started on Sunday night and took the opportunity to finish it on Monday, since I was home with her.

The pattern was easy enough for a newbie like me to follow, though you can see that my stitches are still wonky and lets not even talk about my seaming. I suck at seaming crochet too, so this didn't shock me. ha! The most intimidating part was making the V neck, and even that wasn't very hard.

I went up 2 needle sizes to get gauge and even so, it is still a little tight on the doll. Since the hoodie stretches, its not too big a problem and Pi doesn't care about that. She excited that I was able to make it in the first place.

The good news is that I finished it. The bad news is that she wants me to make another one! I know this is doll sized, but can this count as my first knit garment? Even if it does seem like I'm cheating, haha!

Tuesday's Tribute

Tuesday's Tribute

Tuesday's Tribute is to my Mom. We've had crazy difference my entire life. Its a rare day that we see eye to eye. We've gone months without speaking.

Mom and Piper, 2000.

But the mere thought that my mom could be ill makes all of that irrelevant. None of it matters one single bit, because no matter how many differences we have, I can't imagine not having my nutty mother.

Mom, Mother's Day 2008

Love you mom!

Just because I'm that stupid....

If you can't read my really bad icing letters, the cake I made today says "Happy Jury Day." heehee

Husband was amused.

Lots of stuff...creative, huh?

My little monster is home sick today and I'm home with her. Hubby would normally be home with her, but he was called to jury duty. His first time as a Brooklyn resident. I can tell the kid is actually sick because she's been well behaved and even napped for an hour and a half. Usually, you can't pay her to nap.

So onto the random updates for the week. First, my mom had a sonogram, which said that the fibroid was only about 3cm big That's a lot smaller than the doctor suspected, so he sent her for a CT scan. The CT scan said the fibroid was at least 9cm big. That confirms that mom will need surgery at the end of this month. Most likely it will be a partial hysterectomy, since the doctor wants to remove her uterus but save her ovaries. Since she's so young, he thinks its better to leave them and prevent a lot of estrogen therapy. The doc suspects there are more fibroids behind the large one, so he ordered an MRI for a clearer view. She's going this week, so please keep her in your thoughts and prayers.

Speaking of my mom, I decided to sew a Lots of Pockets tote bag for Mother's Day. My first mistake was planning! My plans always go awry! haha!

While the bag looks great from the outside, I somehow managed to get the bag stuck in the feed dogs as I was doing the last top stitch and I made the mistake of tugging on it, so there is a big rip in the lining. Its in a weird spot that is not easily fixed and even if I did, it would be obvious. I don't have anymore of the lining fabric to take it apart and replace it either. So, I fixed it as best I could and decided to keep it. I'll make mom another one and will have hopefully learned from my mistakes. I'd rather not give her an imperfect bag if I can help it.

Mom digs shiny anything, so I'm going to make her another bag out of this fabric. When I say shiny anything, I mean anything! She once passed down a whole bag of tank tops that didn't fit her anymore and in that bag were a shiny gold and shiny silver tank. Like superhero shiny. No joke! :)

On the landlord front, those buggers never picked up my letter and it will be mailed back to me tomorrow. Bezzie was right when she said they would come for the rent. The cowards sent their kid, so I couldn't give the kid hell. Not his fault, ya know? So I called 311 today and got the 411 (Mary J. Blige, old-schoolers??) about how to make a formal complaint. Turns out since this is a private rental, the proof of mailing is helpful but not necessary. The fact that I have it and loads of pictures will just make our case stronger. They'll even send an inspector to my apartment. So I'm waiting for hubby to get home so we can discuss when to make the complaint and then it's really going to be on!

Anyway, since my little monster has been in bed all day, I re-introduced crochet. She hasn't had much interest the last few months, but a day in bed and a new stitch was just the thing to cure that. I taught her how to do double crochet. Considering this is the first time with this stitch, she's rocking it. To make it sweeter, that's the hook I learned on too. *sniff*

And while she's crocheting, I am breaking in that new measuring cup (love pyrex...awesome stuff) and cake pan. Cake from scratch, here I come!

Happy Mother's Day!

Happy Mother's Day to everyone!

I've been spoiled rotten today. My family made me a huge breakfast in bed. Piper even made her "famous" scrambled eggs. Did I mention it was in bed?

Pi bought me a costume bracelet that said "mom" all around it at the school Mother's Day sale (no plant sale this year). Hubby got me a new glass measuring cup and a new cake pan, both I which I really really wanted.

The best part is that I was allowed to lounge around in bed, watching tv and generally being lazy. I didn't get out of bed until 1:30. That's the life!

I've got plenty to tell you guys about the past week, but it will have to wait until tomorrow. I've still got a whole day of lounging ahead of me.

Grrrrr

I sent that letter of complaint to my landlord on April 27th. Today is May 6th and they still have not picked up the letter from the post office. I don't even know if I can make a formal complaint without proof of delivery! They also have not come to get my rent this month. How long do they plan on avoiding us?

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!!!!!!!!!!

Baby Stuff Galore

Sorry for the blog silence this week. This has been"one of those weeks." Even though its been a bit nuts around here, I did work my butt off on finishing the gifts for the baby shower we went to yesterday.

The first thing I finished was edging some Tigger fleece that I had in my fleece pile (which is getting smaller, oh no!). The days I was working on this, it was near 90 degrees. I should have left it for last because the last half of the week has been down right chilly and rainy. I used a simple x-stitch because it made a nice border without being too girly.

The latest Crochet Today magazine had the cutest little baby rattle in it. I used a half ball of Lion cotton left over from a FBB I made last year. This pattern is so simple, it makes me want to slap myself for not thinking of it! It is really beginner friendly. The magazine picture has a ribbon around the bunny's neck, but I left it off because it seemed a little dangerous, if you ask me.

Did you think I'd make a baby gift and not make a Kelly sweater? Pshaw! I love this pattern! I used RHSS (same as for the blanket) and car buttons that I had left over from a project last year. Its a size 3-6 months. Figured that would be best so the baby can use it in the fall.

There was a small amount of the Tigger fleece left over, so I fiddled with the sewing machine and made a hat. Its just a simple rectangle with the brim folded up and sewn. I used a baby hat chart to estimate the sizing. A little yarn in the corners and insta cute. Next time, I'll make the tassels just a little longer.

And because I'm completely insane, the morning of the shower, I decided I had to make baby booties. I used this pattern, but tweaked it a lot. I only used fleece so I skipped all the lining and interfacing parts. I friggin love them!!! I want to make a pair in my size. Seriously.

Here is Piper's giant baby, modelling the outfit (before I added the car buttons). Its neat how a combination of sewing and crochet makes for a different kind of baby set than I've ever made before.

Then off we went to Bethlehem, PA for the shower. It was supposed to rain all day, but the weather was gorgeous. I didn't even have to drive, thanks to Inky Binky's boyfriend.

Can you tell I am a city girl? This was so much green, I just had to take a picture!

I thought this cake was really cool! See how it says Baby J? The baby is a boy and will be named Julian.

We didn't get home until nearly 2am. It was a great time, but I'm just about spent. I'm spending all of today in my pjs, watching tv and hopefully napping.
In other news, I sent a certified letter to my landlord on Monday. I don't think they've picked it up from the post office yet. Wish me luck for when they do. Its on now!
