Penfolds Koonunga Hill Seventy Six Shiraz Cab '08 & Wynns Black Label Cab Sauv '06

Gee that title is long... This week I opened two bottles. Surprisingly, I never had Coonawarra Cab Sauv before. I knew about the Terra Rosa soil in the region and how it produces great Cab Sauv grapes. Therefore I put high expectation to the Black Label. As everyones knows, Wynns is one of the best wineries in the region, other famous ones include Balnaves and Majella. Speaking Black Label, it has a long history that goes back to 1954 when the wine was first produced. Well, it is also one of the most collected Cab Sauv in Australia and is classified "Excellent" on Langton's. Enough BS - light purple colour, a medium bodied wine, fine tannin, sweet blackcurrant on the palate and a hint of coffee aroma on the nose. It is very different from Magaret River Cab Sauv. I think the wine drinks very well now, JH recommends drinking until 2016, I think it is spot on. On the other side, it lacks of complexity that I expected to get from Cab Sauv. Overall it is a good wine given its price range. 93 points. Drink now to 2015.
