"Cold as the Dickens"!!!

Mr Edward & Ms Edith usually winter on the balcony outside our Master Suite... BUT...  A Storm came last night and "This Sweet Little Couple" came caroling this morning... Their cute little noses were pressed against the french door as the blustery winds were whirling around their shivers... I knew they were wishing to come in and warm by the fire...
How could I not invite them to stay when the weather outside was So "Frightful"... AND they were So "Delightful"!!!
Ms Edith brought me a cheese ball, wrapped up in such a pretty package... I just baked some scones that will compliment her gift perfectly...
Mr Edward is going to read to us a few chapters of the book I just began reading... Cass of http://cass-thatoldhouse.blogspot.com/
has "Informed Me" that her "costume designer daughter" has "Informed Her" to "Inform Me" THAT "Mr Edwards is wearing a Waisted Hat"... She said that it's called that for Obvious Reasons... Thank you SO much Cass&Sweet Daughter for the info... I'm SURE Mr Edward didn't even know that!

Do you see all that snow outside the window??? Winter definitely came to Connecticut last night...We were cloched overnight in a few feet of drifting white... Most of those drifts are HUGE!!! You can see a "small" one peeking in through the window behind Ms Edith...
I am brewing a large pot of coffee, so everyone can stay warm and cozy... I think we'll move into the library for the reading and to sit my the fire...

Winter Whites & Candlelights from the Black Forest

It's time to relax now and unwind from the festivities...
Let's retire to one of My Favorite Places...
I adopted this "Sweet Little Girl" YEARS ago from Avon...At the wind of a key she will sing a pretty tune...BUT today she is exploring deep into the Black Forests and has found a little friend that she is sharing her berries with...
This is your special spot to join me in relaxation... all you need to do is choose your refreshments...
"One of Many Candles Illuminating my Black Forest Tablecloth"... The crystal star candle holder is a treasure find that sparks delight with a faceted glow...
If anyone is home in those quaint little houses deep in the forest, they are "Most Welcome to come join us this evening"!!!

I am having coffee this evening... I need a good pick me up because I have MANY OLD "Christmas Movies" to watch into the wee hours of the morning!!!
This is the actual little fellow that posed for my teacups... I must cross the Atlantic to see this Sweet Little Soul... He's a European Robin...
You can learn more about him and "Hear his birdsong" @
http://www.rspb.org.uk/wildlife/birdguide/name/r/robin/index.aspx
http://www.rspb.org.uk/wildlife/birdguide/name/r/robin/index.aspx

I LOVE these teacups! I acquired them long ago from Hallmark Cards as part of their Christmas Collection...They only made cups and a whistling teakettle... I bought "LOTS & LOTS" of cups, and 2 kettles... The little bird that perches here is a European Robin, Known for its pugnacious behavior despite its diminutive size...The color of the cup is the most refreshing  mint green with creamy fresh snowflakes... the saucers I'm using are Syracuse Restaurant China(that came with the GWfind(you can read about them here @  http://conghailecottage.blogspot.com/2010/09/i-have-been-looking-for-particular.html ) ... I wasn't going to keep these saucers BUT, they match perfectly so they are staying at Conghaile Cottage...
I have folded my napkins into rosebuds to accent my favorite little German Rose silver spoons!!! The doilies are all German too...
Add caption
I just put a pot of "Hot Chocolate" on... The aroma will entice my "Little Lady" to come in from the cold... She may bring her little feathered friend in if she likes... There is "Always Room in the Inn" for anyone who needs a warm fire and a hearty meal...

St. Nicholas

festive holly boughs by Horatio Alger, 1865
In the far-off Polar seas,
Far beyond the Hebrides,
Where the icebergs, towering high,
Seem to pierce the wintry sky,
And the fur-clad Esquimaux,
Glides in sledges o'er the snow,
Dwells St. Nick, the merry wight,
Patron saint of Christmas night.
Solid walls of massive ice,
Bearing many a quaint device,
Flanked by graceful turrets twain,
Clear as clearest porcelain,
Bearing at a lofty height
Christ's pure cross in simple white,
Carven with surpassing art
From an iceberg's crystal heart.
Here St. Nick, in royal state,
Dwells, until December late
Clips the days at either end,
And the nights at each extend;
Then, with his attendant sprites,
Scours the earth on wintry nights,
Bringing home, in well-filled hands,
Children's gifts from many lands.
Here are whistles, tops and toys,
Meant to gladden little boys;
Skates and sleds that soon will glide
O'er the ice or steep hill-side.
Here are dolls with flaxen curls,
Sure to charm the little girls;
Christmas books, with pictures gay,
For this welcome holiday.
In the court the reindeer wait;
Filled the sledge with costly freight.
As the first faint shadow falls,
Promptly from his icy halls
Steps St. Nick, and grasps the rein:
Straight his coursers scour the plain,
And afar, in measured time,
Sounds the sleigh-bells' silver chime.
Like an arrow from the bow
Speed the reindeer o'er the snow.
Onward! Now the loaded sleigh
Skirts the shores of Hudson's Bay.
Onward, till the stunted tree
Gains a loftier majesty,
And the curling smoke-wreaths rise
Under less inclement sides.
Built upon a hill-side steep
Lies a city wrapt in sleep.
Up and down the lonely street
Sleepy watchmen pace their beat.
Little heeds them Santa Claus;
Not for him are human laws.
With a leap he leaves the ground,
Scales the chimney at a bound.
Five small stockings hang below;
Five small stockings in a row.
From his pocket blithe St. Nick
Fills the waiting stockings quick;
Some with sweetmeats, some with toys,
Gifts for girls, and gifts for boys,
Mounts the chimney like a bird,
And the bells are once more heard.
Santa Claus! Good Christmas saint,
In whose heart no selfish taint
Findeth place, some homes there be
Where no stockings wait for thee,
Homes where sad young faces wear
Painful marks of Want and Care,
And the Christmas morning brings
No fair hope of better things.
Can you not some crumbs bestow
On these children steeped in woe;
Steal a single look of care
Which their sad young faces wear;
From your overflowing store
Give to them whose hearts are sore?
No sad eyes should greet the morn
When the infant Christ was born.

"The Grandeur of Gold", Tinged with "The Romantic of Roses"...

I decided to just lounge this evening and have some quiet "Me Time"... Of course I sat with some of my Lovelies and played with some new dishes I picked up from TJMaxx... The plates are "Royal Stafford" in the "Pink Rose Garden Floral" design!  I didn't buy the dinner plates, I really would rather contrast and they didn't have the FULL Spectacular graphics that these little plates have SO, I came home with a pile of these!!! I "Would" LOVE to know what the coffee cup or mug looked like,  I have a feeling there IS NO coffee cup or mug to go with these Lovelies! Why do they do that??? The pink in this rose is a gorgeous, and true to my picture of it...
I am envisioning it will make a stunning garden party plate come summer! Look how beautifully it goes with my wooden table... Oh and by the way, "I'm waiting for my gingerbread to come out of the oven to SAMPLE IT"... We must make sure it's at it's best before we let the family have it! Oh, the sacrifices us women must make!!! It's a tough job but someone has to do it!!! "Mmmmm, can you smell it"???
Can you see the golden gate surrounding the Drop Dead Gorgeous David Austin Rose(I'm calling it an Austin Rose because they ARE my very favorite and it's MY DISH so I can call it whatever I want)!
These beautiful creamy white platters I have had "FOREVER" and they are from Italy... I Loved them SO much I bought a stack of them... They look SO pretty as chargers, although I have used them for everything from "Appetizers" to "Breakfast in Bed"!!! AND I'm not worried if I drop one on my ROCK HARD porcelain kitchen floor "Because" I have a whole stack of extras, hehe!!!
I tried a few different "Looks" for my new Grandeur of Gold Rose plates, and this is another beautiful look... It was amazing how easy this dish WAS to work with... Is it JUST ME, or is this another MUST HAVE for every china closet??? OK Ladies, Your neighborhood TJMaxx just MIGHT have some, if you REALLY want one or two, OR a stack like me!!! They were only $2.99( Shhhh, I would have paid a LOT MORE)!!! I must also mention that they are Made in England...
Under my dish I cushioned it with this Gorgeous antique German Plauen Lace...

I used this cake plate as my Charger... This is a "Fabulous Find from GW". Remember I told you I scored this week, WELL, this is another one of the treasures I bought for $2... It's a MINT Condition "Fostoria Crystal Etched, two handled, Cake Plate, in the Meadow Rose pattern".. .This pattern was introduced in 1936...

This pair of vases, I Loved as a child, and I now have the privilege of, them prancing around my dining tables... My Mom had them NOT in use, on a VERY high shelf , SO I went out on a limb and said, "Mom, can I have the Deer Vases"? I then closed my eyes and crossed my fingers... She didn't say a word, BUT she looked totally "in shock" at me, then turned around,  pulled a chair over to the shelf,  pulled them down, and handed them to me!!!
These vases bring a whole "life of memories" with them to my home, where we'll create new memories for the future... Mom was BEAMING as she gave them to me... I could tell she was just as excited to think I wanted them and she seemed honored as she passed them to me..."We both had the biggest smiles on our faces and in our hearts"... These vases still have their original tags on them from "TILSO  hand painted Japan"...
This is the Vintage German Tablecloth I used this evening... The German Village Scene is repeated around the whole cloth and it's stitched in gold thread... It is definitely "One of my Favorite Things"!

Little Ellie Claus & Tartan whirling at the North Pole

This is a Sweet and Simple Winter Tea...WITH...Little Ellie Claus as a surprisingly Sweet and Magical story, worth an evening to savor ... It was written in 2000 and because I bought it when it was released I was also treated to the Radko Snowflake ornament that was made ONLY for the release of this book... The first editions came with a coupon to send to Radko to claim the snowflakes(while they lasted)... I am "Shocked" that this story has not been made into a movie... It has a perfect twist to the hardships of the depression era, but develops into a heartwarming traditional story that should be read... Thank you Mr Manos, you are a fine writer!!!
This Polar Pair has graced my company since the 80s when I picked them up at an after Christmas sale for "peanuts"! I love their unique style as they adorn the table with illumination... They are quite big fellows too, so they watch over carefully as the kiddies dip in for a second round of cookies with an intimidating stare...
"Hey, Didn't you ALREADY have a third helping of those"???
Growing up my Dad would always hang these ornaments on our tree...He was in charge of the "Glass Ones"... He did a good job of guarding their safety because "Here they are", two of my VERY FAVORITES! and they NEVER have been put on any of my trees, they always have a "Guest of Honor Seat at our Table"!!! The crystal bowl they are in was a  thrift shop find last week, there were three different pieces, all from the same pattern "Imperial Crystal Candlewick". ALL are in mint condition "AND" they were all 50cents(Jackpot!!!)   I am "ALMOST" feeling guilty... OK... I'm over the guilt AND now I'm feeling like I'm giving them a good loving home! I will always wonder who could have given these treasures away and I will keep that anonymous spirit alive in the love that will be shared with friends and family... Someday I will return the favor of my borrowed time by passing these Favorite Things onto Someone Special who will cherish them as I have... "Who Knows It May be You"!!!
Do you see my little napkin holder??? He's a frosted little German crystal polar bear that just patiently rests on top of the napkins... He's quite hefty for his size so he does his job well!
This is one of those things I love that "Almost Got Away"! It's an Italian Umbriaverde ceramiche dinnerplate in the most beautiful light creamy yellow(so pale it could pass for not being yellow at all)... By the time I made up my mind I "Had to Have a set of these", they were almost gone and I only got 4...NOW, the "Hunt is on" because I love every detail about them, their irregular shape, and OH THAT COLOR!!!

You all know Johnson Brothers Friendly village! It needs no introduction... BUT... In my home the dinnerplate that came with the set, JUST was too small for supper... Hubby and all my 6'3plus,plus,plus Sons would NOT approve of the size...SO... I own all the buffet dishes(a much more generous size plate)... This is "MY DISH", it's my favorite of all the pictures(and there are LOTS of different ones)...This is Maple Time, do you see the buckets on the trees??? AH, come February, that's what it looks like here in Connecticut!

I'm using a "Federal Glass amber depression glass Cake Plate" as my chargers... This pattern is Patricia and it was made between 1933 & 1937... I found these at GW for $2 each in MINT condition! I also bought other treasures that day which must have come from the same collector. I will use them another day...
An English Cup, A Radko Little Ellie Claus Snowflake, and one of the most "Beautiful Scarves I have ever seen"... This scarf that ripples along my table today is a "Diana Tartan Memorial Scarf"...I have tried to photograph it's beauty but this MUST be seen in person to appreciate... I bought this scarf when it was first introduced, the proceeds go to Diana's charity... and if I were to say that's why I bought it, it would not be true... AT FIRST SIGHT, this color combination is "Captivating" and will NOT let you leave without having several items draped over your arm... I did not know of the charity when I placed my treasure on the sale counter, AND when the clerk told me, I quickly scooped up more of the Diana Tartan... The piece on my table is Mohair, It is my favorite... The sizes and styles have changed a little since I bought my goodies, BUT you can still buy them and read about Diana here @ http://www.dianatartan.co.uk/products/Ladies-Mohair-Scarf-and-Tam-Set.html#
Can you see the wonderful Texture & Colors in Diana's Scarf???
This buck "Almost" got away! I spotted him at Home Goods the first year I discovered their store... Of Course (those of you that know me "KNOW" I love to sleep on it before making purchases)... The store ONLY HAD ONE, although I DID tuck it in behind some "Boring Large Items" in hopes of camouflage "JUST IN CASE"!!! OK, I didn't sleep that night, AND I was out the door before breakfast... hmmmm, the camouflage did not work, BECAUSE, he was gone... I asked a clerk if they would get more and "She Pointed"....I SWEAR I saw a beam of light "Spotlight my Trophy"!!! There he was, He had been MOVED to the "END Display", the one that "EVERYONE" looks at(even bored husbands have been seen gawking in front of the END Display)! I would have lost him for sure if I had grabbed even a coffee that morning!!!
"Isn't he Handsome"???
"Aurora Borealis"
This is the German handstitched tablecloth that was under my setting... It was hard to see so I folded it to let you have a closer glimpse of it and all it's splendor... The stitching is an Ice Blue on an off white cloth which matched the tablescape perfectly...
The stitching appears gray BUT it is not... It is a beautiful Ice Blue...
