Store Review ~ Design 5

What I love about Colours Dekor, is the fact that I get to meet such inspiring people, share their dreams, aspirations and get to know them a little better... each step of the way I'm amazed, intrigued and motivated by their lives...

and now, Im telling you about my conversation with Molly, of Design5

Molly, tell us a little about yourself :

I have a university diploma somewhere, for fine art and design that sparked a life long practice. I’ve created projects across various communication disciplines of design. Graphic, space, 3D, identity, logos et al. After a stint of almost 12 years, I decided to chase my dreams, than somebody else’s. Out of this dream was born – Design5 Studio.
Tell us a little about Design5

Design5 Studio started in 2006 out of my love for creating 'functional' design. I create 'eco-whimsical' upcycled decoupaged products  out of eco-‐friendly wood pieces.
What is different about your design or your products

I believe that design is functional, design is human. Not virtual. Because it is meant for people. For a purpose. If it does not communicate, holds no interaction, then it is not design. I take items that others may consider to be junk and create products that I consider 'whimsical and fun.' My designed products reflect my belief that a good design touches you. Tickles you. At times, hopefully, even leaves you amazed.
A visually stunning graphic piece of work that arouses your senses. Any of them. Sometimes all 5 of them.

Perfectly understand your concept about design, but what really makes Design5 different.

All Design5 products are handmade by me. Each is a unique piece. No two finished products will look the same here at our studio. I make all these products out of wood, taken from rejected old furniture pieces, that people usually throw out. So, a Wall Clock could very well have been a chair, a table or even someone’s front door!
Give us a little demo of how things are done at Design5.

I pick out the most usable bits and cut them into usable sizes. The wood surface is scrubbed clean, made even & smooth. Then cut and fixed into desired shapes and sizes. Later I 'primer' them. This particular step out of the entire process, is the most cumbersome and toughest bit. It takes usually 2-‐3 weeks to get enough wood for one set of products, ready for designing.
The  next step is easier. The wood products are decoupaged with my self-‐designed paper. Later I seal them up with a waterproof  sealant. Some details can be added at the end…if I feel like it!!

When  you buy a product from me, you can also get an opportunity of getting a unique customized, one of a kind product, made especially for you or your loved ones!!
I immerse myself in the details. I have a knack for what I do. I live what I do. I love what I do.

without a doubt, if you like what you see... visit Design5, and follow her on Facebook and she blogs at Design Five Studios as well....

Blog find ~ JustKraft

Finding a new inspiring blog is always an enriching experience... Today, Im introducing you to JustKraft a bundle of talent... and abundance of creative ideas...I'll pass the mic to Aditi ...

I am Aditi Agarwala Marketing Manager by profession, artist at heart and passionate dancer.  My life till now has been very fun filled with few ups and downs but I enjoyed it all.
I started traveling when I was just 5 years old. Having travelled almost whole of India, I am awed by the use of bold colors in households, temples, rickshaw and truck, graffiti’s, shops and everything I looked around. Bright colors like red, yellow, purple and even orange embracing the exteriors of small & cozy houses. After visiting places like Hampi, Kodaikanal, Mysore, Pipli and many more, I understood that these colors are taken from Nature itself.
All these trips helped me design this Diwali rangoli..

I found the vividness of handicraft to be the soul of Indian culture, tradition and thoughtfulness.
Artisans created not for earning but to feel the pleasure and bliss of colorful creation.
My fascination for colorful handmade kept growing with every trip of mine, be it traveling through big cities or small towns.  Photographs, Art, Design, Home-Décor and Architecture of Incredible India inspired my creativity and inquisitiveness further to create and play with colors.

I would say my deep rooted love for Indian Culture enticed me towards learning classical dance, music, painting and performing arts. These learnings gave me a new perspective to look at the various shades of life and present them through my handicrafts.
These are some happy moments……

 ……..these are some calmer moments!!

My idea of craft not always reflects utility aspect. For me it is way to define myself and communicate my thought process. Lot of thoughts conjure in my mind before I sit down for actually creating something.
So, while even giving gifts to friends and relatives I make sure it is handmade and very personalized which makes the person at the receiving end feel special.

I started my blog to archive all colorful creations which I come up with and also share about those I appreciate who have the urge for creation.
JustKraft is all about colors, beauty and handmade!!

DIY : newspaper Lady Bug

When I saw Diana Crasta's blog, I simply had to share it with you... Another bundle of talent ... a qualified interior designer ... who during her spare time passionately makes gorgeousness from junk....

Sharing today, is her tutorial - making a Lady Bug from newspaper... This can even be used as a gift box...

Take a ‘four pages’ newspaper. Fold it from the center. Fold it again from the center. Cut through the center (the previous fold). After cutting you will get four such strips. Start rolling from one end of the strip with the help of a knitting needle. Keep tightening it while rolling. Once you cross the center of the strip, take it in your hands and continue rolling. At first some will find this rolling a bit difficult and tiring but it becomes easier as you proceed. Put glue at the end and roll to finish it. After finishing it will look like this. Let’s call this a ‘roll’ for our reference. Some points which you need to remember while rolling: Keep tightening, try to make the roll as long as possible. The ladybug which I am making now is a small one. So for this I’ll need around 15 rolls.

Take a roll and flatten it except for the end portion (around 4 inches). Measure 1 inch, fold and glue it.
Start rolling it without putting glue as shown in the picture. Once you reach the end of the roll put little glue inside the roll. Take another roll and insert it inside the first one. Again flatten the roll (including the joint) except for the end portion. Repeat the process and continue rolling. Remember that the shape you get should be oval. I have used around 7 rolls. Now put pressure from one side to get a dome kind of a structure. Let’s call this a ‘dome’ for our reference. The outside portion of the ‘dome’.

Make another dome but a smaller one this time. I used 4 rolls for the smaller piece. Now we will make the legs of the ladybug. Take a roll and flatten it. Measure half an inch, fold and glue it. For the ‘dome’ we had not put glue before rolling. But this time we need to put glue and then roll it twice. Secure it with a clip till it dries. Take the smaller dome with its inside portion facing upwards. Measure its height and accordingly cut the roll to make the leg. See the next image for better visual clarity. Make four legs and glue them on the sides of the smaller dome.

Take a soft cardboard which can be rolled easily. Glue the cardboard around the legs and the dome as shown in the pictures below.

Now take a roll and glue it at the top edge of the cardboard. Now we will be covering the cardboard with a thick cloth thread as shown. Start winding the thread from below the roll at the edge which we glued just now. Continue winding it till you reach the legs.

Finish it by gluing the thread behind one of the legs. Now take a roll and wind it twice so that its diameter is smaller that of the rolled cardboard. After winding it twice cut the roll and glue to finish it. Glue it at the center of the bigger dome. This prevents the head of the ladybug from falling or slipping. The head & the body of the ladybug are ready. Follow the pictures below and paint accordingly. With a marker draw the outlines on the head or the bigger dome as shown in the pictures below. Follow the pictures below and paint accordingly.

And if you try this.. don't forget to share a picture with me... on coloursdekor@gmail.com
