Art Journaling- Five Layers with Brusho and DesignIT paste

I've been a huge fan of art journals for quite some time-but have gotten a bit stuck on how to get started!
As I was looking at and reading about different pages, I saw someone mentioning doing 'five different layers' so I took my inspiration from that.
I had constructed a junk journal a couple of weeks ago- basically cutting up paper bags from different shops, using different off cuts of papers from other projects, as well as some patterned note pads I had. I put a bunch of these together using an easy binding which allows me to remove and re-add pages for ease of working on them.
I selected a two page spread and began to layer.
Layer one- glue on a piece of old wrapping paper.

Layer two- DesignIt pastes in gold and bronze through a large flower stencil.

Layer three- Sprinkle and spray Brushos in Terracotta, Bright Red, Yellow and Black.
Layer four- White gesso sparsely spread through a small flower stencil.
Layer five- text printed, cut out and glued.

And that's that! I really easy and effective way to break into art journaling

Crazy Block with Painted Effects

I recently stocked up on some fun Colourcraft products when I visited The Festival of Quilts, so I decided to play around with some of these things and made a super cute Crazy Quilt inspired block!

I first started by photocopying a page from a Japanese book which I then transferred to a piece of calico with Image Transfer Medium . This involved applying the medium to the printed side of the copy, applying it to the calico and letting it dry, and then spraying water on the paper to remove excess paper leaving just the image.

I then added some color with Brushos and a bit of glitz with SprinkleIT.
I then added a bit of Gesso to make a space for my stamp, and used a stencil with DesignIT paste to add my next layers.

Once my DesignIT paste stenciling was dry,  I stamped my image with StazOn ink and a beautiful stamp from Crafty Roo Designs called "Bob Robin", I then used another stencil and applied some ExpandIT.

I then added some Brusho and heated up the ExpandIT with a heatgun.
I love the texture! But I decided to add some more of the DesignIT to really show off that stencil. This time I blended silver and copper to make rosegold.
And here is the finished product all ready for stitching!

I hope you enjoyed this project! I'm certainly going to be exploring these materials further!

8x8 chipboard decor with Ewelina

Life is so busy here... so this week I have a quick but cute project on an 8x8 chipboard from abstudio.

I used Brusho to create background shades as well as to colour the papers and tags (which are from Canvas Corp).

I also used black DesignIt paste to make a doily which I layered in between the tags.
The paste dries flexible so whatever you make using it is easy to cut, bend and make sure that it goes where and how you want it to go.
I cut the doily in two because I only made one but wanted it sticking on both ends of the cluster...

This time, instead of photos, I made a video for you... enjoy!

Have a great day!!!

"Pouring" your heart out- a pouring medium project

February is just around the corner, which means Valentine's Day is! What better way to show someone you love them then to make them a piece of art, and why not "pour" out your feelings using Brusho Flow Medium and testing out some pouring techniques.

This week I decided to try two different pouring methods.
First I made a template out of freezer paper which I ironed onto my canvases. Then I mixed my colors. I mixed normal white acrylic paint with the medium in one cup, and then added Brushos in Rose Red, Sunburst Yellow and Purple in my other cups. I stirred well and then added water until I got the consistency I wanted.
My first canvas I decided to do what is called a "balloon pour". First I poured some of the white inside of my masked area and spread it out. Then I dropped and swirled the other colors.

I didn't find my balloons so I took some bubble wrap which I pushed into these areas of paint. I kept dripping paint and then pushing the bubble wrap into it. It started to look like this:
I wanted to have a bit stronger colors, so I sprinkled more of the Brushos into the colored areas and blew a bit with a straw.
This is what it looked like when I took the freezer paper off. It had bled a little under my mask, but that was ok! I sponge painted around it in Aztec Eco Metallic Gold paint and then drew in flowers with a paint pen.
For my second heart, I decided to do a flip cup. You can read more about that technique and even see a video on my earlier blog on pouring (link later in this blog).
I did the same thing with the mask, then I made my flip cup by adding the Brusho mixed colors to what was left in my white cup. I then flipped it onto the canvas, and tilted to spread around the colors.

After this one dried, I removed the mask, used a stencil to add some DesignIT for texture and then painted the background with a rose gold color I mixed from Aztec Eko Metallic Bronze and Silver.

Tada! I think they both look quite cool. I have to warn you though- pouring is totally addictive. I am really pleased with the depth of color I got using the Brusho medium plus Brushos! And it didn't take much of the pigment to get a lot of color. The medium is sticker than others I have used, but just adding a bit of water makes it perfect for these techniques.
Here they are again! Give it a go!

If you want to see more pouring techniques with the Brusho medium- check out another blog post I did here.

Mixed Media tag by Karen

Hello all! By coincidence my tag today uses similar techniques to the Valentine heart that Sarah made here. As I've used black gesso on my project, it also shows you how fabulous the Brusho Acrylic Shimmer Sprays are on black as well as the white that Sarah used.

I started with a wooden tag (Tim Holtz etcetera) and used Soft form relief paste (now called DesignIt paste) through a stencil and added more lines and dots directly with the spatula to give the surface some texture.

Once dry, this was covered completely with black gesso and left to dry again.

The decorations were gathered together: A band of thin metal mesh, which I cut in two and then cut to get rid of the straight edges, a corrugated card heart, metal wings and some recycled corrugated card.

I splattered some gold Aztec metallic paint on to the heart and then dragged the brush across the corrugated paper so that it just hit the ridges.

The almost dry brush was then wiped over the tag so that it highlighted the texture in gold.

I then switched to the Brusho Acrlic Shimmer Sprays to add a beautiful sheen, first in gold...

and then in Copper to add warmer tones similar to the wings I planned to use.

Once these were dry, I glued on the decorations, layered for texture and depth.

I hope you like this project. If you haven't tried the shimmer sprays on black yet, I would urge you to: The effect is quite spectacular!

Thanks for passing by today
Karen
