Dom and Fabian

Corry's cousin Dom came to visit from Switzerland earlier this month.  It was so fun to have him and his friend Fabian around for a week.  He was a little worried if he would be accepted by us with his tattoos and piercings, but we assured him that he would be accepted.

Niether are members of our church and Corry helps his young men, who are preparing to serve missions, with a missionary prep class two Sundays a month.  The Sunday they were here just happened to be one of those Sundays, so Corry asked them if they would be willing to come and be "investigators" for his boys.  We don't know many people here who are not members, or who were not members of our faith at one time, so it was a great treat for these boys to have them.  Since the class was after our 3 hour church meetings, they were great sports and came to that too.

I LOVED how accepting my children, friends, and neighbors were!  I live around incredible people!  Anyway, we had great discussions and talked a lot about our beliefs the rest of the week.  Some interesting things that Dom pointed out were:

  1. You tell me that my drinking and smoking is harmful to my body, but you (meaning Mormons in general) eat a lot of fast food and drink a lot of soda.  That is not good for you either!  - We then talked about how he is right.  We don't treat our bodies right when we eat too much junk and drink soda!  But we also talked about the habit forming and mind altering affect that drugs, alcohol, and smoking can have on your mind and body.  Good point though!  We are eating a lot more "whole foods" at our house now and I already rarely had soda or let the kids have soda.
  2. You're women are so beautiful!  They are almost pure or something.  There is just something different about them.  Later he told my mother in law that he wanted to marry one of these most beautiful mormon women.  She replied to him that what a beautiful Mormon girl wants is a Mormon boy.  He asked me about that later and I told him it was true and it all lies in the temple. If we want to be sealed to our spouse for time AND ALL ETERNITY, we both have to be active in our church, make covenants and keep them.  It is not a one time, get yourself ready to go to the temple, go through, make the covenants, and then go back to your same old habits.  It is about life changing things that bring us more happiness than we can ever imagine.
  3. At one point he asked the girls what they did for fun, because he drinks a lot, goes to clubs and that sort of thing for fun.  When they started telling him the crazy games they play, night games, swimming, hiking, movies in the backyard, and all the other fun things they (and Corry and I) do with our friends he was amazed.  We even took them to trafalga to play laser tag and they loved it.  They want to open a Laser Tag place in Switzerland when they get home!

After church Corry is out of his shirt and tie fast!  But, Dom and Fabian didn't bring a change of clothes!  Don't they dress up nice!
One of the days Scotty went with Corry's dad, Dom, and Fabian to the sand dunes.  They had a great time until my father in law rolled the 4-wheeler he and Scotty were on and ended up with some broken ribs.  Thankfully Scotty was OK though!  It has been a long painful process for my father in law though.  I feel so bad for him, but am grateful he protected my Scotty!

This was one of the greatest experiences my family has had.  As I said, my kids don't know many people that aren't a member of our church, or didn't used to be a member.  It was so great for them to see how wonderful people are in general and also see how they want to live.  I think the whole experience strengthen each of my kids testimonies about the truthfulness of the restored gospel of Jesus Christ and made them want to be better!

Throughout the week I kept thinking about Elder Jeffery R Holland said in the last general conference for our church..., "however late you think you are, however many chances you think you have missed, however many mistakes you feel you have made or talents you think you don’t have, or however far from home and family and God you feel you have traveled, I testify that you have not traveled beyond the reach of divine love. It is not possible for you to sink lower than the infinite light of Christ’s Atonement shines."  He also said, "coveting, pouting, or tearing others down does not elevate your standing, nor does demeaning someone else improve your self-image. So be kind, and be grateful that God is kind. It is a happy way to live." And another favorite, "surely the thing God enjoys most about being God is the thrill of being merciful, especially to those who don’t expect it and often feel they don’t deserve it."

I am thankful God is kind and merciful because I NEED Him to be!

Alli's Field Trip

I got to go with Alli on her field trip to the Bean Museum! So fun.  I used to be totally creeped out by all the animals (OK still am a little) but I do like going with my kids and seeing their eyes get big as they stand right next to the huge elephant or the grizzly bear.  It is pretty cool to see them get so excited! Mostly I just love having some more time to hang out with Alli!

She loved the tortoise int he reptiles show and was even brave enough to touch him!

Fuzzy's Birthday

Fuzzy's birthday was a busy day.  She started it off by having to be at school at 7 AM for a choir rehearsal.  So I made her and Missy a quick breakfast burrito and sent her out the door.  I was excited to get to take her out to lunch (Wingers) on her special day.  One on one with her is rare and precious!

When I picked her up after school she had her crown her friends made her wear all day...

and the giant bear they stuffed in her locker - her locker isn't that big!
and the balloons they left in her locker with funny faces on them
Love my Fuzzy girl.  Missy was super cute and they picked out her outfit for school together the night before school.  Most of it being Missy's clothes!

After school, she hung out for awhile, then we had a very fast/rushed lasagna dinner and presents.  What Fuzzy wanted for her birthday was new pointe shoes for ballet.  I have written before about how the kids have to buy their own shoes, we give them an added shoe allowance every month, mostly to teach them stewardship over money.  Pointe shoes cost between $60-$90 each pair so this was a big deal.  She was so excited to get her new shoes.  They are so very pretty!

Between piano lessons and early morning study sessions it was 4 days later we were able to have birthday breakfast.

I sure love my Fuzzy!  She is so thoughtful, beautiful, kind, intelligent, graceful, contemplative, imaginative, happy, crazy, and so many other things.  I love her laugh.  It is contagious!  I love her love of learning and how excited she is to learn new things or figure something out.  I love how much she loves little kids and loves to make up games and play with them.  I love how well she cares for babies! I love how she always has a good attitude and can find the positive in a bad situation.  I just love this girl.  I can not believe she is already 13!  Mostly what I love about her is she is OK with who she is.  She tries to improve herself, but she is happy in her own skin.  Happy with who she is trying to be and trying to become.  I love you my Fuzzy!  Happy 13th Birthday!

Missy's Amazing Race Birthday Party

We had so much fun with Missy's Birthday Party!  When we looked at the list of how many kids (around 30) she wanted to invite, we realized we had to do something fun and big with them all, since we don't have that much room in our house.  So luckily we had decent (slightly chilly but dry) weather.  The other bonus was that the only day until June we could do the party, was the same night as a stake dance.  So we came up with the brilliant plan to have the party until 8:30 PM, then since the stake center is so close, they could all walk over there for the dance and parent could pick their kids up at the stake center instead of here.  BRILLIANT!!!!

We asked all the kids to bring a treat or snack to share and we provided pizza and water.  These 30 teenagers plus my family ate a very unimpressive 7 pizzas.  I was shocked and had 5 left over pizzas!

Then the "see how many grapes we can shove into our mouths" began

It happened to be the weekend for the Teen Living class' mechanical baby assignment

They were highly annoying!  I sure hope none of my kids take that class!

More grape contests

Corry trying to get in as many pictures as possible

Then there was the "run and see if you can catch me" game - we had many falls on this one!

Then they played frisbee

And of course one of Missy's parties wouldn't be complete without wiggle car races

Finally everyone came and it was time to start the race.  First I collected all electronic devices:

Then we got everyone together for a group picture and to draw for teams

Here is what we did:
I bought a bunch of clipboards at the dollar store and gave each team a clip board and a pencil to hang onto.  First we divided into groups by each person picking a colored hair tie that they wore on their wrist for the whole game (also found at all a dollar).  We did 8 teams of 4.
I kept a copy like this to mark off each team.  They had to come check back in with me or Corry to get their next clue with all the questions or tasks complete.
Team____________________________________

Then we gave them their first clue, all about Missy, since it was her party, and didn't let her answer.
Clue #1
How Well Do You Know Missy?
When is her Birthday?
What is her sister Fuzzy’s real name?
How old was she when she lost her last baby tooth?
What is her favorite color?
What is her mom’s name?
If she could go on vacation anywhere, where would it be?
How many times has she read the Harry Potter series?
What is her favorite sweet thing to eat?
What two activities are her stress relievers?
What is her favorite song?
Who was she named after?
Does she still have her tonsils?
Would she bungee jump?
Does she have any pets?
Is she afraid of spiders?
What is her favorite class this semester?
I had Alli and her friend hide all the golf balls and each clue had a different number to find.
Clue #2
Find the ping pong ball hidden in Missy’s yard with the number 1 on it.
Clue #3
Collect 1 paper clip, 1 nail, 1 eraser, 1 stick of gum, 1 penny, and 1 leaf. (I gave them a small ziplock sandwich bag with this one)
Clue #4
Alphabetize by title the books in the family room. (They were HORRIBLE at this, but I did try to trick them with "the"! and it took way too long!  I would definitely do this one different nest time!)
Clue #5
I used this website, http://www.worldatlas.com/webimage/testmaps/maps.htm  to get a map of Europe for them to fill out.  It was harder than I thought it would be for them, I would maybe just have them answer 10 or something like that. Or they could bounce 10 pencils into a jar.  All the groups did this except Missy because I didn’t realize I had written on the clue to do it in 30 seconds.  SO Missy’s team got WAY behind.
Clue #6
Fill the cup provided to the line using only this medicine cup.
I found a booklet of coupons for free at the grocery store that I used to make these questions.
Clue #7
1 - At what store can you get your iPod fixed?
2 - How much can you save on a wedding dress at Rosa Bridal?
3 - Starting at what time are the Subway coupons valid?
4 - Name the animal on the Roll Up Cafe ad.
5 - What sport is named on the BYU shirt?
6 - What company is now hiring?
7 - What does Trent do for a living?
8 - What is Norma’s middle name?
9 - What kind of wood do the use at Outback?
10 - What rodent can you find at the opera?
Clue #8
Match how many miles (as the crow flies) is it from each city to Pleasant Grove:
I used a website like this one:  http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/distance.html
A. Paris, France _____
B. Atlanta, GA  _____
C. Rome, Italy  _____
D. Dallas, TX  _____
E. St. George, UT _____

I. San Diego, CA _____
J. Berlin, Germany _____
K. Istanbul, Turkey _____
L. New York City, NY _____
M. Baton Rouge, LA _____
N. Helsinki, Finland _____
O. Detroit, MI  _____
1. 5782

10. 239
11. 1971
12.  5084
13. 6312
14. 1343

Clue #9 (we skipped)
One member of your team must place pencil on back of hand, toss int he air and catch.  Repeat with two pencils, three, etc, until 12 pencils have been placed on the back of the hand and caught.
Clue #10
What is the house number of the 5th house from the top on the North side of Missy’s street?
Clue #11
Blow up and tie 10 balloons.
Clue #12
Find 10 (real English) words using the letter in Missy Cloward.

Clue #15
Run to the STOP sign at the top of Missy’s street, each member of the team must touch the “S” then run back and be the first team to touch Missy’s trampoline to win the race.

Trying to alphabetize the books!

The winning team!

Second Place

Third Place

After that we had ice cream and they sang happy birthday to Missy.  Cloward's, I have to let you know that they did a much louder more awful version of Happy Birthday than we have ever done!  It was impressive!!!

After that it was off to the dance and we cleaned up.  Great party!  The saddest part was that the best part of the party was at the dance and I missed it!  Remember the question about Missy and what her favorite song was?  We it is "You Don't Know You're Beautiful" by One Direction.  When that song came on at the dance, all the guys surrounded her and sang it to her!  What a great moment.  Great night!!!
