Chalk Lettering and Nelson Mandela

Yesterday I felt like creating a chalk illustration and I still had an unfinished sketch of this inspirational Nelson Mandela quote floating around. Since it's about education I thought it's a great fit.
And I love chalk lettering, we use it a lot since it's toddler friendly...
Although the process of creating this finished piece was a bit different (and less messy).

Holiday Pics and Lettering

Hello, today I'm sharing a new project I'm working on!
I've combined photographs of our recent family trip to South Africa with some new lettering! I love how summery they've turned out although over there it was already autumn...!
See more of these images on my website here and keep checking back as I'm updating the project over there, too.

Celebrate Breastfeeding

Here's a new illustration to celebrate national breastfeeding week!
A great opportunity to raise awareness and normalise breastfeeding.
I wish I had known about the many sources of support that are available before I started my own breastfeeding journey. We've had such a rocky start - I almost gave up but at 26 months we are still going and I'm glad to have this 'secret weapon'.

New Work - BUST magazine handlettering

BUST magazine asked me to do a handlettering poster with popping colours for Roseanne Barr's New Year's resolutions (December/January2013 issue).
Here it is, plus the handlettered header on the left for this article written by Roseanne:

New Work - Parents' Pages Summer issue

The summer issue of Parents' Pages is out. It's a publication of Surrey County Council for parents of 0-19 year olds. It includes lots of lettering and illustration throughout the magazine done by me. The full page feature is about Fostering and what steps are required to qualify. I also worked on this year's spring issue and last year's winter and autumn.

The Big Read

I recently did lots of handlettering and illustrations for bookmarks, stickers, posters, flyers, and a map with stickers for The Big Read for small children which took place in a forest in Surrey this May.
Kids and parents used my illustrated map to get around and join activities in Alice Holt forest and collected stickers at each activity to put on the map.
You can watch a video of the event here, with my map in action.

Parents' Pages - illustration + handlettering

A fantastic publication I worked on with Surrey County Council and Preface Studios is out now: Parents' Pages - winter issue (download pdf).
Below are a few of the illustrations and some of the lettering I created throughout the magazine.
I have worked with Surrey County Council before a few years ago, illustrating parenting publications and creating a logo/identity that involved more child-like handlettering.
This time the illustrations are slightly more grown-up, and some cover more serious subjects, all very interesting and worth a read!

The cover. Drawing onto photographs is something I don't do very often for commissions but which worked well within this context, a girl in a wellie-throwing contest as part of the Decathlon Feature.

The Health Check feature. Lettering and a few spot illustrations plus what I've used a few times throughout the magazine - photo collage illustration, here for Dr Mark who works in A+E.

Another very inspiring feature about childcare and learning, with Rebecca and her daughter Billie-Dee.

The Surrey Focus autumn/winter page, I will create more seasonal banners for the next issues.

One of my favourite handlettering pieces I've created in this job, see the full feature on fire safety via the pdf download link if you want.

A very touching feature about self-harm and mental health, a self-written account from daughter and father.
I used a diary style handlettering for the quote up in the sky and the whole feel and look was supposed to be similar to my Northline book jacket illustration which the commissioner really liked, and it fits well I think.

These are 2 of the featured GB Olympic hopefuls, both runners, and these medal-like photo collage illustrations stand alongside their Q+A's.
