Spent 5 hours in Dhoby Ghaut today, under the hot sun, with Benghui.
Yeah, trying to sell the 60 boxes of candies on my hand.
I can't say I enjoyed it though. But it's to help the Boys' Town Singapore. So, it's worth it, seriously.
It's been centuries since I stepped onto the streets and tried to get people to donate.
Lol. You really get to see all kinds of reactions from the people. And those families with kids were much easier to persuade. I mean, kids just can't resist sweets can they? While there were some who were willing to fork out $$ and left without touching the box. Kind indeed but if it's me, I would definitely take it. Afterall, minusing one box from the tray would motivate the volunteers, right?
Well, of course there would be those who did not buy. Not their fault, frankly speaking.
There are at least two flag days every weekend in Singapore. Imagine if you are one of those who go shopping in Orchard almost every week.
And to people who did not buy from us today, I really don't blame you. I totally understand your feeling. I do try to avoid sometimes.
I mean, if you are a kind soul by heart, you would have certainly tried to help in your own ways. You may have dialled the numbers every time a charity show is broadcasted on TV. You may have gone to different countries to help those unprivileged children. You may have put in a coin when someone with a can approaches you. But today, you only have $10 left for your weekend's breakfast, lunch and dinner. Only a single red note, nothing else. And this youth asks you whether you would like to buy a box of candies from him. You thought for a moment and told him eventually, that you did not have small change and walked away. And that youth started thinking that you were such a miser, that you had no compassion.
Just that bit of unfairness, don't you think?
Yes, till now, I still believe that we, the people, from all places, love to help, hope to help. It's just a matter of whether we can or not.
Well, I discovered one more thing.
That I should spend more time under the sun.
Apparently my skin had turned red when I got home.
