#bpsevwember!

Amanda from Bimble and Pimble started a sewing hashtag project on Instagram for the month of November, and it's been so fun, especially when it comes to meeting new sewist friends from around the world! Every day we post a photo according to the set topic, and since we're heading towards the end of November, #bpsevwember will be ending soon too :( If you'd like to join, it's never too late to hop on the bandwagon though :D

Here's a couple of my #bpsewvember photos; no prizes for guessing which are my favorites lol.

Check out the other lovely photos by searching the hashtag #bpsewvember on Instagram. And if we aren't friends yet on Instagram, I'm at @chiiiiing (5 i's heheh).

The making of The BFF Bag

A video!

/squeal

It's been a long time since I've made a video about making things-- the last one being my entry for Modcloth's DIY Boss contest... 2 years ago. LOL. #fail

Now I have another video to share with you, and it's about making a L.A.R.K bag, specifically The BFF Bag. It's a real snappy video, so no it's not something for you to bookmark and watch on the long commute home. Unless by long commute you mean 50 seconds tops ;-)

Please take a look :-B

CIY: How I Met Your Mother-inspired chest of drawers

Hurrah, another paint project! I got the opportunity to work with the creatives of Nippon Paint recently on Nippon's CIY (Create It Yourself) series and boy was it fun.

The husband and I have always loved the wide range of colors of Nippon paint. When we were deciding on the colors for our house, we were obsessed (like Single White Female obsessed) with super neutrals (thanks, Martha Stewart) and Nippon was the only brand who had all the beautiful shades we were looking for. In fact, here's a photo circa 2013 of us selecting Nippon colors for our house while we were on a weekend getaway:

I know, I know. Totally not cheesy at all. Hahaha.

So anyhoot, when the creatives asked me if I wanted to have a day of projects with Nippon's range of paint, it was seriously a no-brainer.

I got to paint with this beautiful, warm, bright Marsh Marigold...

(It's a beaut, this color. This wall was stamped with little bicycles later on.)

And, being a big How I Met Your Mother fan, I've always been attracted to this chest of drawers in 'The Apartment' that was shared by Ted, Marshall and Lily, and at point Robin too. Check out the colorful one on the far right, behind Marshall and Lily:

Awww, remember the time when Robin had that handsome boyfriend in the picture? Nupe, neither do I. Lol. He wasn't memorable. hehehhe. Me evil.

So since I love that colorful HIMYM chest of drawers so much, I CIY-ed an inspired one:

Btw, Nippon's Pylox is the best spray paint I've used. It adheres to plastic well, this is good stuff. An old chair was given a makeover with Pylox too.

Ok, I shan't waste more of your time, watch the whole CIY video here, thanks to Nippon:

Hope you like it!

DIY Project: Little Hobo Footstool

I spotted this footstool by the roadside when my colleagues and I were out for lunch. It was lonely and sad (I was probably just imagining it though), and it called out in a soft, weak voice, "Halp." Ok, I was probably imagining that too, heheheh.

We went back to the studio, but then I kept thinking about the footstool (more like a little vanity stool) and my workmates said, "Let's go get the stool! It's now or never!" So SJ, Lion and Meng (I think it was the 3 of them, though I'm not sure why we needed so many guys to carry a small stool LOL) and I drove back to the spot-- me being paranoid that someone else would've gotten to it before me-- as if everyone is a hobo thief like me. Anyhoot, lo and behold, we attained the stool!

It took me a reallyyyy long time to get started with the stool, and I'm glad I did it in the end. I cleaned and sanitized the stool with some Dettol. No bugs living in there, but you can always use bug spray to get rid of any too.

The stool was rickety, but nothing an Allen key couldn't fix (thanks Ikea for the many Allen keys you've bestowed us with over the years).

And then it was time for the usual suspects: A coat of primer, and a coat of white spray paint...

... followed by a few coats of the final color: warm golden yellow.

p/s Always wear a mask when you're spray painting stuff! :-B

I replaced the whole cushion with a brand new one. Found an old Ikea footstool pillowcase (we seem to like footstools in the house eh), but the pillow was too flat. Enter fabric scraps to the rescue! Lord knows I've a ton of them ^.^"

The fabric scraps were sandwiched between layers of aquarium filter foam pieces so that the surface feels flat and not lumpy. I'm not sure what the exact name for these are, but they're like thicker, coarser versions of regular batting (and much cheaper too)-- these were leftovers from my brother-in-law's aquarium.

While my husband and I were out buying lights from a lovely old man's shop, we walked through an alley and I saw pieces of chipboard discarded by a furniture shop. My brain screamed AHHHHH I NEED DATTT and my husband, thankfully, didn't think I was a crazy hobo. Ok actually he probably thinks that lol. He helped me pick out a good piece, I got a little FatMax jab saw (was looking for one of these pull saws which looks so cool in this video but couldn't find it), and cut out a piece of wood for the cushion to sit on.

I sewed a simple cover for the cushion with some fabric my mom gave me.

Like most padded stools and chairs I've seen, the cushion sits on a plank of board (plywood or chipboard), the fabric cover is stretched around the cushion and tacked onto the board with a heavy duty staple gun.

Huzzah! New footstool!

I call it the hobo footstool because every part of it came from somewhere different, and yes, I did pick it up from the streets like some hobo lol. Have you done anything like that yourself too? Please tell me I'm not the only hobo around...

A Tutu Fit For A Rockstar

Sometime last year, I took on a fun project-- design and sew a tutu for a bride-to-be's hen's night. The challenge: the bride is not a girly-girl type of uh, girl, so Kel Li the maid of honor wanted something feminine yet edgy for the bride. We discussed it and decided on a combo of soft tulle, pleather and studs: the ultimate hard and soft (hello Project Runway episode title!).

And of course, the tutu had to be in black ;-)

Here are the initial sketches:

While both are rock star-worthy, the tiered tutu was a little more playful while the single layer tutu was more... grown up. Kinda like Avril Lavigne vs Gwen Stefani, y'know what I mean? Kel Li decided the single layer was more becoming of Joanna (the bride), so we went with that.

Kel Li said the tutu has to be poofy, so a lot of ruffles went into it. I actually laughed when I was sewing them because the ruffles seemed never ending and I was surrounded by it!

And all the ruffles, ruffles and ruffles were worth it.. the hemline of the lining was so flouncy and pretty-- time to look for a subway grate ala Marilyn Monroe maybe?

And all that flounce, topped with layers of soft black tulle...

Gold studs on the waistband for that rock star edge. My favorite part though, was the tiny little widdle rhinestones.

Tutu: Unfluffed. Oh she's a rocker chick.

I didn't want to overdo the bling-ness of the skirt, but wanted the tutu to sparkle with a bit of dreaminess. So the tiny rhinestones dotted the tutu like stars in the dark sky.

And when the tulle is fluffed up by hand, that's when things begin to get dramatic.

Tutu: FLUFFED! DRAMA MAMA! SHE'S GOING TO SMASH HER GUITAR!! MASCARA EVERYWHERE!!

But don't take my word for it-- let the bride speak for herself:

Uh sorry she can't speak now, she's kinda... occupied.
Hahahaha I love that bathtub pic, Joanna really rocked it!! Pretty epic.

I know this is super late, but congratulations again to Joanna the rock star bride! And thank you Kel Li & Nora for the fun project, and for the pics! ^.^
