I participated this year (for my second time) in Kat Sloma's Liberate Your Art postcard swap. I was so excited to get my own cards out there. But I was honestly too busy to really pay attention to the cards as I received them. In addition to the six cards I received in the swap, I got two other postcards during the same time period. Here is what I received:
The original mail art from Mel and the card from Miriam were outside the swap. And I was amazed that with over 200 people who actually participated, I managed to receive cards from blog friends Mel and Rinda. How cool is that? Now that we are to the blog hop part, I do plan to contact each of my recipients and let them know I received their card. I hope I will hear from some of the people who received mine!

One Little Word Blog Hop - January Edition
HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!
Can you believe this day is here already??? 2013 just flew by!
Whether you arrived here from Lee's Blog as part of the One Little Word Blog Hop, or you are here because you love me and drop by regularly... Welcome! I love visitors! The One Little Word Blog Hop is a monthly hop run by Lee for members of Ali Edwards' One Little Word class over at Big Picture Classes. The hop goes live on Wednesday at 6:00 a.m. You can always check back later if someone's post isn't live yet.
Our November assignment was to collect photos that represent our word. As of December 1st, I hadn't gathered the photos of my most recent dares. So here is November's assignment, albeit a bit late:
Our December assignment was to reflect on our word and what we got from it, and what we wanted to remember of it as we bid it goodbye:
My DARING Highlights of 2013:
January - researched, gathered recipes, and started a paleo diet.
February - completed LOAD213 challenge
March - went to a Stampin' Up party by myself, went to the Cherry Blossom festival in DC
April - did a major clean/purge in my craft room, including boxes and bags of
memorabilia, went to the Cherry Blossom festival in Philadelphia
May - completed LOAD513 challenge;
June/July - completed the Summer of Color Challenge; traded in my trusty old Blackberry
for an iPhone; enjoyed a week at the Jersey shore with family
August - engaged in street photography for One Little Word class and Summer 2013
Photography Scavenger Hunt; sent Rachel and Becca off to college and began to
experience the "empty nest" lifestyle (love it!)
September - visited my mother; learned to shoot a 22 caliber Beretta hand gun
October - Traveled twice for work and combined with personal travel; went on a
helicopter tour of the Grand Canyon with Jay; saw two shows in Vegas; toured Sedona
with Deb
November - completed 30 Days of Thankful album
December - cut off 9" of hair to donate to Pantene Beautiful Lengths
Throughout the year - finished some old UFO's including Perpetual Happiness album,
1998 Disney album, and Sarah's baby album. Tried pomegranates, avocado, sweet
potatoes, and several new recipes. Attended a series of different yoga classes via a
Living Social deal. Met up with three different blog friends. Established fairly consistent
morning pages and meditation habits.
And my tracker for December:
In all, 2013 was a very good year for me and I bid it farewell with fondness. But I'm also very excited about 2014 and all the potential it holds! For 2014 I have chosen the word "KIND" and I'll be back with more about my meaning and hopes for this word in a future blog post.
And just in case you get lost, here's the entire list:

Storytelling Sunday - My Precious 11
So what is in my beautiful hope chest? One thing you will find in there are baby clothes, carefully wrapped in acid-free tissue...
Although all my girls are officially now "twenty-somethings," I still have these remnants of their newborn days. The outfits in which we brought each of them home from the hospital.
In the center is Sarah's outfit. Being born at the end of June, a summery little bubble suit was appropriate. Being a new mother, I thought "dress up" was required. Honestly, that was a woven, not a knit, so I can't imagine it was all that comfortable. But hey, in my defense, I didn't make her wear it all that long.
Here's Sarah in that outfit for her hospital picture at just three days old:

Honestly, that was a woven, not a knit, so I can't imagine it was all that comfortable. But hey, in my defense, I didn't make her wear it all that long.
Here's Sarah in that outfit for her hospital picture at just three days old:
Rachel and Becca were born in September, at a time when the temperature in this area is quite variable. And as I was a more "experienced" mother, I was all about comfort and ease of dressing rather than "dress up" by then. Becca wore the little sleeper on the left, Rachel the one on the right. Since there is nothing in the photo to give you a size reference, let me tell you these two were little. Becca came home weighing 4 lbs, 11 oz and fitting only preemie size clothing. In fact, the only thing that fit her properly was a sleeper we took off a cabbage patch doll! For the first few weeks I called her "peanut" or "Little Roo." Thankfully neither of those nicknames stuck. Rachel was 5 lbs, 11 oz, but even that seemed tiny to me as Sarah had been just shy of 8 lbs at birth. My girls were swimming in these outfits when we brought them home.
Here they are at just over two weeks old:
Rachel is on the left, Becca on the right, and the little sleepers are still a little too big on them. No worries. By the time they were about three months old, they had caught up to their peers in size and Rachel had put on enough baby fat to make those worried-old-lady-wrinkles on her forehead disappear. In fact, this picture isn't a good indicator of her personality as truthfully she was the happiest, most easy-going of my babies.
I have no idea why I'm still hanging onto the baby clothes or what I will ever do with them - I once had plans to scrapbook them but can no longer find the plastic "shadow box" style page protectors I was going to put them in. I know they were on the market once - 12x12, about 1/4" thick, front and back snapped together, with a binder edge with holes that would fit in a post-bound album. But I haven't seen them in years. So in the meantime, those outfits remain wrapped up in protective tissue in the hope chest, a poignant reminder of my life twenty-something years ago.
This post is written as part of Sian's Storytelling Sunday. But before you hop over to see what everyone else is sharing, do tell me... have you saved baby clothing? What do you plan to do with it?

The assignment for October was very open-ended. An art journal page related to your word. My page was inspired by a quote I came across and re-pinned on Pinterest.
This is my reminder to be true to myself... even when those closest to me want me to change back to the way I "had always been." I have wings. I'm going to fly!
And my tracker for October as it exists at the time I'm creating this post. Because of my crazy travel schedule this month, I had to go back and check off a lot of things from memory after the fact. But I'm pretty sure I didn't have a single day where I followed my Paleo lifestyle to the letter. Way too much bread, pastries, and sugar. But travel is over now and it is time to get back on track!

One Little Word Blog Hop - October Edition
Whether you arrived here from Lee's Blog as part of the One Little Word Blog Hop, or you are here because you love me and drop by regularly... Welcome! I love visitors! The assignment for September required us to interview someone with respect to how they see our word playing out in our lives and record the results. I took advantage of my trip to Dallas to interview Sandy (my mother) and Melissa when she joined us for a day of scrapping and chatting. I was so happy to hear the words of encouragement from these two very wise women!
It only took a little orange marker, washi tape, and some painted thickers to really finish off these pages!
Seems they both already think I'm doing a pretty good job of living my word "DARE" - I just need to keep on walking down the path I've started.
My tracker for this month - as far as I had it done for taking pictures to put together this blog post. Can't wait until the last minute this month as I'll be on a plane headed for Boise Idaho when you are reading this post!
But what I really want to tell you about is the BIG DARE I accomplished in September... Due to some unfortunate circumstances in my childhood, I grew up with an irrational fear of guns and swore I would never touch one, never own one, never have one in my home. As I have matured, I've learned enough to know that it isn't the gun that is the problem, but the person who is holding it. So while in Texas I confronted this fear head-on. Mike (my step-father) took me to a shooting range and showed me how to shoot.
22 caliber Beretta. And those targets are from the actual target sheet I was aiming at.
Turns out that guns aren't that scary after all. And I'm a much better shot than I ever thought I'd be!

The assignment for July involved using sticky notes to record when our word was active in our lives. While the concept was intriguing, I have to admit that July was far too busy and full for me to devote any creative effort to making use of the idea. That's the long way of saying I didn't get my homework done. :( July was full with more office days than usual (including three in one week!) and a week away for vacation.
But "DARE" was alive and well in my life throughout the month of July. I DARED to:

But "DARE" was alive and well in my life throughout the month of July. I DARED to:
- purchase a Living Social voucher for yoga classes to guarantee that I would get started again
- make my young adult daughters go to the dentist for regular check-ups without me there to hold their hands
- let go of all of my pre-conceived notions and expectations of what I would accomplish during my vacation and just RELAX.
- practice Tai Chi on the beach by myself even though other people were walking by
- stop procrastinating and set up appointments for yearly routine medical testing
- trade in my trusty old Blackberry for an iPhone (learning new technology doesn't come easy for me!)
I hope you all found your words manifesting in your lives!
Here's my tracker for July - you can tell it was an unusual month for me:

One Little Word Blog Hop - May
Whether you arrived here from Lee's Blog as part of the One Little Word Blog Hop, or you are here because you love me and drop by regularly... Welcome! I love visitors! The May assignment for One Little Word was to listen to the messages that we are getting from the Universe that resonate with us and to capture those on little artsy cards. I waited until nearly the end of the month to actually execute the assignment, but spent the whole month listening for those messages. I used techniques from the Get Artsy class by Mou Saha over at Big Picture Classes to create the background for my cards and then added washi tape and a few little embellishments at the end. This is what I came up with:

It is nearly impossible to tell from the photo, but the word "Joy" and the butterflies are a shiny blue foil transparency material and really add some sparkle and shine to the spread. The background was created using watercolors and modeling paste with a stencil.
My major "DARE" for May was to participate in and complete the LOAD challenge. And I did! At least one new layout every day for 31 days. And if I include the 33 pages that I completed for Sarah's baby album, my total for the month (I haven't finished counting yet) is about 70 pages! That is a record for me.
To close out May, here's my tracker:
I'm still eating mostly Paleo and doing very well with it. Those four little sad face days are the ones that I indulged in dessert of some sort. But hey, if you are having your birthday dinner at The Cheesecake Factory, you really HAVE to finish it off with a piece of cheesecake, right? If you are continuing on in the hop, your next stop is Naomi's Blog.

For my UFO, I chose an album I started back in 2008 from a BPC class called "Perpetual Happiness". I had done most of the exercises for the class, but had never finished all the layouts that went with it. I finished this album! I shared some of the digi layouts I created HERE. And here are the paper layouts I created during March:
The March assignment for One Little Word was to choose a specific action for March and put it on the calendar.
Since my word is DARE, I phrased the specific action in terms of a dare. For March I "dared" myself to finish one unfinished project, to clean and organize my office, and to keep up with the Finding Photo Freedom class.
This isn't actually a picture of my office. The goal of this layout was to create a story "as if" you already had exactly what you wanted. |
It is so great to have that project done!
The office clean-up also went great. Here's the proof:
My office space looking from the left. Lots of misc. stuff piled on the desk in the "before" photo.
My office space looking from the right. You'd be surprised how much "stuff" I took out of that space!!
Under the desk area.
On the opposite wall from the desks are the cabinets and printers. I didn't just clear the counter, I went through every drawer and cabinet, sorted, purged, and re-organized. Did all the filing. Took three grocery bags of paper out of this room! I spent nearly a week working on it, but I'm so happy to have so much less clutter in this space now. Makes working in here so much nicer!
I did move a large box of stuff back to the "studio" (living room turned craft room) and that will be my next project. But I'm giving myself the entire month of April for that one! ;)
And to close, here is my Tracker for March. I'm very happy with the way this month went and can't wait to see what I can accomplish in April!

One Little Word Blog Hop - March
Whether you arrived here from Lee's Blog as part of the One Little Word Blog Hop, or you are here because you love me and drop by regularly... Welcome! I love visitors! The February assignment for One Little Word was to create a dream board or vision board reflecting your word. Most of the class did this with clipped images from magazines and paper and glue. I went digi with it - largely because I've gone pretty much paperless around here and don't get many magazines anymore. All of my favorite scrapbooking magazines went out of publication and the one left - Creating Keepsakes - I was so bored with that I allowed my subscription to lapse. So I just don't have a lot of magazine fodder to work with.
Here's my layout:
I created this with bits and pieces of over a dozen different digi-kits, so I hope you'll all forgive me for dispensing with crediting all the artists!
I resized it to 6x8, printed at home, and adhered to the reverse side of my February focus tracker, so it will be in my little Snap album. But I also plan to have the full 12x12 version printed and will hang it from my bulletin board as soon as I get it. I've been holding off printing until the finish of LOAD because I know it means I'll have a lot of layouts to print at once!
Here's my February tracker:
A little worse for the wear, I spilled water on it one day. And also on my keyboard. And learned that a sheet of Bounty slipped between the keys really will soak up the liquid... but I digress.
I feel that as far as "dares" go, this month was a total success! I followed a primal diet the entire month, scrapped and uploaded at least one layout a day to the Flickr group for LOAD, tried a few new recipes, and learned how to use the remote trigger on my camera. Not bad for one month, eh? What did you DARE to do this month?
Thanks for stopping by! If you are following the hop, your next stop is Lisa's blog. If you get lost, here's the entire list:

One Little Word Blog Hop - February
Whether you arrived here from Lee's Blog as part of the One Little Word Blog Hop, or you are here because you love me and drop by regularly... Welcome! I love visitors! The One Little Word Blog Hop is a monthly hop run by Lee for members of Ali Edwards' One Little Word class over at Big Picture Classes.
I chose to create only eight broad intentions which are all year-long endeavors, so I did not assign them to a month. The "original" page is a card from my blog friend Kai - which I though went well in this spot!
Here is a close up of the first set of cards. I'm happy to say I began the Primal Eating challenge on January 27th as intended. I am four full days off of grains. Don't ask me how I'm doing yet, it's too soon to tell and I'm still struggling with cravings for sugar and bread. But I'm persevering.
And the second set of cards.
I can tell you there has been a TON of enticing offerings in the online class realm this month and I've been sorely tempted by a lot of them!
Not counting my year-long classes (Beyond2, One Little Word, Move More Eat Well) so far I've only signed up for two - the first was a week long Creativity class that is already over. And then I got taken in by Miss Smith and the Telling Tales class but I'm not regretting it at all!
There are many many more that I've already decided to pass on. And right now I'm still mulling over The History Project as well as the possibility of signing up for Stacy Julian's Finding Photo Freedom as an alum. I've already taken this class, but I know I could use more work on this topic and I get more done in the classroom setting... hmmmm... what's a girl to do?
I've also made some small progress on scrapbooking UFO's - and hey - every little bit counts right?

Whether you arrived here from Lisa's Blog as part of the One Little Word Blog Hop, or you are here because you love me and drop by regularly... Welcome! I love visitors! The One Little Word Blog Hop is a monthly hop run by Margie for members of Ali Edwards' One Little Word class over at Big Picture Classes.
Our December assignment was to complete this sheet closing out our word for the year and reflecting on the facts and feelings surrounding it. I know that "focus" was a good word for me and that I learned a lot about being productive and staying on task. At the same time, I had some colossal failures at long-term goals, so I'm clearly still a work in progress!
It doesn't really show up on the scan of this sheet, but I used a subtle grungy art journal style background and brown ink around the edges on this ... IRL it really looks much nicer (very artsy), but you'll have to take my word for it... I don't have the time or energy to get a photograph taken and edited!
I am not posting my Tracker sheet for December - I got caught up with the holidays and family and did not keep up with it at all. But it is a "FOCUS" trick that I fully intend to carry into the new year!
I will be continuing with One Little Word in 2013 and I am so excited about my new word... DARE! This word came to me repeatedly in early December - in a phone call with my sister, in an email exchange with Deb, in reading I was doing. And I'm ready to take it on. Dare to be ME - even with my own family who often don't see the real me (I'm seriously more afraid of their disapproval than anything else in the world). Dare to try new things. Dare to accept more social invitations. Dare to take the 30 day Paleo challenge. Dare to learn more photography skills. I think DARE will be a good way to bring more fun and enjoyment to everyday life as well as a way to push me outside of my comfort zone from time to time.
Do YOU have a word for 2013? What is it? Inquiring minds want to know!
If you are following the hop, your next stop is Ruth's blog. The hop goes "live" at 9 a.m. PST, 12:00 EST, so check back later if you arrived too early to catch everyone - it is a short list this month. If you get lost, here's the whole list:
