Human Body Fun Facts

Enough about chemical engineering stuff for a while. Let's look at some bio-cool stuffs for a moment. Look at your body. The human body is actually an amazing thing. Here are a few fun and fascinating facts about our body.

* Our brain weighs about 3 pounds and all but 10 ounces of it is water. So, technically speaking, we're all water heads and no one is an airhead.

* If we stub our toe, it takes only 1/50th of a second for our brain to register the pain.

* We're all dim bulbs, because our brains use less power than 100-watt bulb.

* It can take about 200,000 frowns to make a permanent wrinkle. So the next time you notice a wrinkle, smile and stop frowning, 200,000 frowns is more than enough!

* We're all Pinocchio's. The cartilage in our noses doesn't stop growing. We can expect to grow ½ inch longer and wider as we get older.

* If we're freckled, they stop appearing usually around the age of 19 or 20.

* To speak just one word, you use 70 muscles - just one word - think about the workout someone doing a filibuster uses!

* We have more than 200 taste buds on each of the small bumps on our tongue. 200! So when we're savoring flavor, we're definitely savoring.

* Women have a far more developed sense of smell than men do and women really notice the difference in their sense of smell during pregnancy and after they've given birth to one child. According to some women, their sense of smell grows more acute with each child they have.

* When we breathe, the air passes through our nose at about 4 miles per hour and we breathe roughly 400 gallons of air every hour. Luckily we don't have to pay for it.

* We have about 18 square feet of skin.

* Our bones are about four times stronger than steel and they can endure 24,000 pounds of pressure per square inch.

* It takes about 150 days for a nail to grow from our cuticles to our fingertips. So dont bite your fingernails.

Doxford Power Ltd - Volume Potable Water and Power Production

I just received an interesting email (thanks Mr. Ray for forwarding it to me) mentioning about a special "Volume Potable Water and Power Production" product. It is believed that this product will be of interest to World Vision as it provides clean potable water as a by-product of electrical power generation, both of which are core fundamentals to health issues for the developing world. I believe, a lot more parties will be interested with such a brilliant revolutionary product like this.

Doxford Power Ltd. (DPL), a company based in UK, produces a 10MWe power station equipment or power stations complete on a supply or BOO (Build, Own and Operate) basis. These power stations are significantly different to current (fossil and alternative) power stations in that their primary fuel is derived from two sources, Biomass (Jatropha Curcas, Rapeseed, Palm oil etc) or waste (household or industrial). With that, the product has no reliance on fossil fuels, the chance for a developing country to meet its current and future energy demands from domestic agribusiness and a waste management solution which can be run in parallel to the agribusiness which can utilize what is normally sent to landfill sites as EfW (energy for waste).

DPL owns and utilizes a second technology called a Powereau Unit which drives considerable efficiencies into standard heat engines (generators and gas turbines) and also the DPL power units. A by-product of this intercooler technology is water, and it produce lots of it. A 10MWe power station will require approximately 25,000 tonnes of biomass oil per month but will produce as a by-product in excess of 100,000 tonnes of water per month and more in humid conditions. This water alone justifies the fuel source.

Fuel Source

The DPL 10MWe power plant can utilize Jatropha Curcas plantations to supply 100% renewable and sustainable fuel supply. The berry crop has the oil removed via crushing and filtration with the waste being made into briquettes for domestic heating and cooking use (thus avoiding cutting further trees) One key issue here is sustainable employment. One DPL power plant will require 2000 hectares of land on average to run every year if Jatropha Curcas is the crop of choice. This provides employment at usually a higher standard than current farmers receive of one job per hectare.

The core infrastructure resources for world health are water and power. This DPL power plant provides both of these and whats more, it can commercially reduce current power production costs.

It seems that this is a superb product and the company has began the business development for it. I understand that the marketing material for this product is being processed now. Hence, what you are seeing (from the power point slide presentation) is the core management marketing pre-graphic designers and is not the final professional presentation yet. The product will only be available from April 2008 onwards.

I tried to get further in depth information from the company's website; Doxfordpower.com, however, it could not be opened. I hope the problem can be rectified and interested parties can refer to it for more information.

Personally, I have attended the CIA2006 held in KLCC last year. I gained a lot of informations, ideas, knowledges and goodies. It will be great to attend the CIA2007 in Singapore. Unfortunately, I could not make it to either the BioMalaysia2007 or the CIA2007 due to job constraint. Hopefully I can visit such exhibition later in the future. I hope anybody attending the exhibition or seminar can share their experiences with us.

Genetic Engineering News Gave Me $2

Today I received a letter from Genetic Engineering & Biotechnology News, which is based in New York. Actually, I'm a subscriber of their GEN magazine which is published every two weeks. They send me a hard copy magazine. Well, genetic engineering is not closely related to chemical engineering, but I subscribe the magazine to get some input from other engineering branches. At least I learn something about DNA, RNA, peptide, protein, drug, bioprocessing, biobusiness etc. It's enriching and sometimes confusing to know those tiny, minute, mysterious DNA-RNA stuff.

Back to the letter story. They send me a letter and I opened the envelop. I saw $2 and I'm surprised! I read the title of the letter and it said, "We need your help to measure the value of our publication. Your opinions will allow us to publish an even better resource for you!".

The P.S. was written in red: Please accept the enclosed $2 as a token of our appreciation for your help.

Enclosed in the letter is a 4 pages of "Confidential Survey of our Subscribers". I have not yet fill the survey but I'm going to do it tomorrow.


They provided me with a Business Reply Mail envelop (to be sent to Lewis and Clark Research, US), but I have to pay for the postage because I'm mailing from outside US. On the top right conner on the envelop it is printed: "No postage necessary if mailed in the United States".

Hmmm....I guess, It's OK. I don't mind paying for the postage. However, I think, they should make international reader like me to be excluded from paying for the postage next time. Or is the $2 cost for the postage?

The Inner Life of a Cell - Animation

As I browse through Curious Cat sometime before, I came across this interesting article outside of chemical engineering, more towards bio-stuff. It is about the animation of cell inside the out body. "The Inner Life of a Cell, an eight-minute animation created for Harvard biology students… illustrates unseen molecular mechanisms and the ones they trigger, specifically how white blood cells sense and respond to their surroundings and external stimuli." “What we did in some cases, with the full support of the Harvard team, was subtly change the way things work,” Liebler says. “The reality is that all that stuff that’s going on in each cell is so tightly packed together that if we were to put every detail into every shot, you wouldn’t be able to see the forest for the trees or know what you were even looking at. One of the most common things we did, then, was to strip it apart and add space where there isn’t really that much space.”

The video includes a nice musical soundtrack. It would be great to have alternative soundtracks explaining the science behind the animation.
