Comparison of fares from Singapore to London:

After a series of monthly checks since Jan 08, i must comment the taxes & fuel surcharge have went up tremendously, who would have imagined the fares can be so high? But as what i have mentioned to some, this is the future of flying, costs are gonna be high. What irks me is that some people whom i have seen at the travel fair claims that last year it was only 1.2k after taxes to London; what i will reply is last year is last year, lets face reality, do your maths, calculate the price of a gallon of oil for your flight and divide it by the number of passengers, do you think its reasonable?

Lets face the fact, for such 12-18h long journey to London, the fuel cost alone for a flight would run up to as many as US$60k, a "bad" airline will past the cost to the consumers leading to very ex surcharge, but while a "good" airline will know how to cope with high fuel costs by hedging against price rises and maintaining cost efficiencies. Their yield management just says it all - efficient. Airlines like Cathay Pacific have limitations in increasing fuel surcharge due to govt regulations, so lets be glad. Apparently, they are covering the extra cost that they cannot pass to consumers, leading to fare increase wef 01 sep 08. Some airlines like Emirates & Sri Lanka Airways include their fuel surcharge into the airfare nett price, thats gd, but that also means that their airfare will be expensive than the rest since it includes fuel surcharge (YQ).

what makes up an airfare:
airfare nett + tax (airport, security, terrorist), surcharges (navigation, insurance, new plane surcharge), fuel surcharge = total cost.

Fuel surcharge will defintely more or less takes up the bulk of the total cost

why taxes go up & down?
currency fluctuations. fuel costs & external airport tax are in us dollars or others, there is a rate of exchange IATA provides, hence the fluctuations.

How? Lets anaylze:

*All prices shown are in SGP dollars, cheapest economy fare & promo NATAS fares
* Prices & fuel surcharge based on 03 aug 08
* Prices are nett, exclude travel agent services fee if any
* List is not exhaustive, every airline has a whole long list of booking classes just for economy alone, chances are that during peak periods, all the lowest fares are fully booked, leaving you with the 3k+ tkt. its common.
*Fares are based on airfare (A) + taxes & fuel surcharge (B). e.g. 850 (A) + 1058 (B) = cost
* v class 6d/1m tkt = "V" booking class, min stay: 6d, max stay: 1mth

AF - Air France (via Paris CDG):

BA - British Airways/Qantas (direct)

EK - Emirates (via Dubai)

> 1450 + 501 = 1951 (min 2 to go)*q class, 3d/1m tkt
> 1700 + 501 = 2201 *e class, -/1m tkt

QR - Qatar Airways (via doha)

> 1105 + 453 = 1558 *H class, -/3m tkt

TG - Thai Airways (via Bangkok Survanabhumi)
> 765 + 1049 = 1814 *v class, 5d/1m tkt natas promo
> 924 + 1049 = 1973 * v class, -/3m tkt, normal fare

TK - Turkish Airways (via Istanbul)
> 1239 + 703 = 1942 *E class, 1 mth tkt

MU - China Eastern (via Shanghai Pudong)
> 600 + 919 = 1519 *Q class, all year long fare, -/45 d tkt

CA - Air China (via Beijing)
> 950 + 919 = 1869 *W class, -/30d tkt

Conclusion: its costly to fly to london due to the high airport surcharges, flying to paris may be slightly cheaper, other parts of europe will usually be cheaper, but also depending on seat availability. Taxes & fuel surcharge are subjected to change, its even more difficult to predict as compared to stock market.

Day 03 - 21 Mar 2008
Temp: 9 - 15c

Osaka/ Hiroshima/ Miyajima/ Himeji

Oh gosh...0655h & it looks so bright. Its kinda tiring considering the sleeping time is around 6h. =x. Thats the view from out hotel window at Umeda, Osaka.
Here we are, after tunneling through Japan's biggest underground station mall, we finally got to JR Osaka Platform 8. As usual, this is the peak hour jam, the most common sight is man in their business suits, almost every guy wears black/dark blue suit while ladies wear all kinds of fashionable clothes. Its really great to "people-watch" in such metropolis. From the lesson we learnt, read the information signs above as one platform is shared by other services. One line can be divided into Normal, Rapid, Express. Normal stops at every station, express being the fastest with limited stops and more comfortable seats.
Entrance of platform 7 & 8

As the route from JR Osaka - JR Shin Osaka station has numerous routes plying, we just hop on the JR Kyoto Line. There you go, all new trains have four 17" TV in each door to indicate the stations & their connectivity, while the other one is screening advertisement. Trains more or less run out of advertisement space, the train operators are definitely earning big bucks from there.
Osaka is being governed by JR West. Main prinicpal card used is ICOCA.
JR Shinosaka main podium. Although your ticket indicates the platform, always do a last minute check on the screen and the correct direction of travel. Trains always depart & arrive punctually, hence every second counts and always remember to take into account the distance from a platform to another as it can be of great distances.
For complicated travels or to purchase a reserved seating on Shinkansen (bullet train), approach the ticketing counters. The left side of the screen indicates the Train type & Number while the left side shows the availability. Green circle means many available, X means sold out, Triangle means selling fast. On public holidays like yesterday, the whole screen was all sold out sold out sold out despite imagining how costly the tickets can be.

Nearing the entrance of a segment of platforms, a screen will indicate these trains head to Okayama, Hakata. The 1st line reads Nozomi 59, 7:42am depart, destination to Hakata, train carriage 1-3 is free seating. Nozomi is the fastest & most expensive train, the 2nd line indicates a Hikari train while the 3rd one indicates a Kodama train, the shinkansen which stops at every station & the cheapest...but not as cheap as what you imagine...=p Im glad i bought the correct timing, imagine you miss the train, there goes my reserved seat.
In front of every platform has another screen informing passengers the arrival of the train and the stairs lead to which segment of the platform.
Before we go up to the platform, lets do some shopping. All major train stations have a plethora of snack bar and bento stalls, all beautifully designed & displayed.
Lunch anyone? 1000JPY = SGP 14.00
Lovely pastries

Timetable for Tokaido Shinkansen to Hakata direction...Its shown on the platform as always, but look at the miniscule font size...goodness....basically it shows the time of arrival at the individual station. The whole catalogue of timetable is as thick as our yellow pages and you can see many people at the reservation office flipping the charts & writing down which train they would liketo purchase

Finally, my train...Hikari 391 is next on the queue. It started its train service from Nagoya.

Opposite shows a Nozomi 500 series train, actually i cant tell the difference...=p

Shin-Osaka platform
As my reserved seat is at carriage 12, one must line up infront of this screen. Yes, there are smoking carriages, so one must always book the correct carriage. Before the arrival of the train, there will be a ear-piercing alarm ringing before you see a shinkansen slowly pulling into the station, there is no chance of getting yourself hit if you jump down the tracks as the trains go at 20km/h near the station and there will be train masters situated everywhere to ensure the paramount of safety. If a train service skips this particular station, it will just speed at around 250km/h and one can feel the huge gush of wind flowing past you.

Shinkansen Hikari 391
Shinosaka - Hiroshima
Duration: 90 mins
Distance: 341.6km
Fare: JPY 10150 (JPY 4690 constitutes reservation fee)

i just love the plushy seats and the generous legroom and of course, the warmth in the train, considering it has been a chilly morning for the past few days.

departing shinosaka station

Shin Kobe Station

Countryside of Hyogo

After alighting at Hiroshima station, we need to transfer to their local train service from Hiroshima to Miyajimaguchi on JR Sanyo Line. Another 25 min ride.

Arrived at JR Miyajimaguchi station

Miyajima Pier. Apparently JR owns not only trains but ferry services also. Haha. Im so happpy, finally im reaching the top3 famous sights in japan!

there's ferry every 15-30 mins, so no hurry...if you are driving, your car can also fit into the ferry...

The ship attendants were like rushing everyone to board quickly so that the vehicles can enter in time for the departure.

The passenger compartment of the ferry

Sights of Hiroshima

Finally, the torii gate at Itsukushima Shrine

Whats the hurry people?

3d map for Miyajima Island, the top attraction that no singapore travel agency brings you.

Itsukushima is an island in the Inland Sea of Japan. It is popularly known as Miyajima, the Shrine Island. Itsukushima is part of the city of Hatsukaichi in Hiroshima Prefecture. The island was the town of Miyajima prior to the 2005 merger with Hatsukaichi.

Itsukushima is famous for the Itsukushima Shrine, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. According to records, the shrine was established in the time of Empress Suiko. The warrior-courtier Taira no Kiyomori gave the shrine its present form. In 1555, Mori Motonari defeated Sue Harukata at the Battle of Miyajima. Toyotomi Hideyoshi built a large building, the Senjō-kaku, on a hill above the shrine.

The island of Itsukushima, including the waters around it (part of Seto Inland Sea), and are within Setonaikai National Park.

Itsukushima is mountainous and sparsely settled. It does have an elementary school and a middle school. There are no traffic signals.

Frequent ferry services, operated by JR West (JR Miyajima ferry) and by Miyajima Matsudai Tourist Ship, carry traffic between the island and the mainland. The trip takes about ten minutes. There is an hourly express passenger ferry to Hiroshima harbour.

Miyajima's maple trees are renowned throughout Japan, and blanket the island in crimson in the autumn. Momiji manju, pastries filled with azuki jam or custard, are popular souvenirs, and carry maple-leaf emblems. Many other varieties such as chocolate and cheese are also available. Because the island is sacred, trees may not be cut for lumber. Deer and monkeys roam freely. Deer are considered sacred in the native Shinto religion because they are considered messengers of the gods.

A style of wooden spoon used to serve cooked rice, without impairing the taste, is said to have been invented by a monk who lived on the island. This style of spoon is a popular souvenir and there are some outsized examples around the shopping district.

The peak of Mount Misen, at 535 m, is the highest point on the island. Miyajima Ropeway carries visitors to within a 30-minute hike to the top. There are several sites related to the historical Buddhist priest Kobo Daishi near the top. The island also contains the Miyajima Natural Botanical Garden.

the sea is just so sparkling clear...

the torii gate & Mt Misen at the background

ohhh...the deers are just so adorable...

my mom says you seem to show more interest in the deers than the sights here...lol =x

The reflection of the torii on the waters at high tide, lets wait for low tide and you can even walk to the torii.

The Itsukushima Shrine...as shown in Japan Hour

Mikasanohama

5 storey pagoda...hmm...thats the name

as viewed from the top of the hill

Wooden spatulas...the trademark souvenir of Miyajima. Its either this or the deers or the torii gate.

Omotesando Shopping Arcade...lol...thats the name of the luxurious branded goods s.c. in tokyo

whats miyajima without the momiji cakes? we bought a box of them, it was definitely fresh as you can see them churning them out one by one using machinery.

beautifully packaged

the exit of Itsukushima shrine

The river that surrounds the shrine and the deers just like to roam around the shrine, of course, thats where i see the most droppings...

Oooo....the flowers are blooming! yea, the temperature has risen to 16-18c. Its a good omen.

A lucky charm anyone?

Daiganji Temple..next to the shrine

imagine if the flowers on the tree bloom...that will make a spectacular picture.

The base of Senjokaku...another temple hall made of wood & stones only. Sometimes you wonder how our ancestors did all this incredible architecture without our modern tools.

The ticket office of Itsukushima Shrine, i took a picture in defiance despite they say no pictures of ticket office...

entrance of itsukushima shrine

low tide is approaching

as you can see, its possible to walk to the torii & touch it as the time passes.

the picture everyone takes...top 3 monumental sights of japan with hiroshima city in the background. on new year's day, theres even fireworks and all kinds of festival here...

pray to the gods, first you clasp your hands, then clap it loudly to wake the gods so that they can hear you. make your wish and clap your hands loudly to tell them your prayer is done. toss a coin for blessings. thats the ritual of praying in japan.

tie your lucky charm on the threads

barrels of wine...of course its just for display

too bad, that steep gradient bridge is not for pedestrian use...but it sure IS steep, chances are that you will roll down on rainy days

deers outside daiganji temple

hoho....people are starting to walk on the mudflats towards the torii...

well, forgetful me, left the fully charged battery in osaka, so we had to make do with our limited supply of battery life for the next destination in Himeji, Hyogo prefecture. In fact, we spent too much time at Miyajima, thus the whole schedule was derailed again...haha

entrance of himeji castle....a 15-20 min walk from Himeji station

exterior view of himeji castle

shortly after that, we left for Osaka again and went exploring the Umeda region. no battery life, no pictures for the day....sad -_-""""
