Arrived in hanoi at 1215pm (Local time), queued for a long time at the custom counters.. Board a shuttle bus to the old quarters and one of the guide mistaken us for Vietnamese and started speaking to us in Vietnamese. Lol.. Arrived in 24 Ly Quoc Su street at a Sinh Cafe in Hanoi travel agency at about 2:30pm, the lady who served us is very helpful and went ahead to assist us with our train tickets, Sapa and Fansipan trekking trips. We decided to go with the agency without checking out the others as the time is drawing close to the time of our train departure.
After the tours were booked, we headed out to get food, we went in to a store which sell com ga (porridge) and met kiki (Gan Zhao) a young girl from guangzhou province who is totally unprepared without the ability to read map.* Salute* we walked around the hoan kiem lake and viewed a large statues before biding goodbye.
Train station transfer picked us up from the tour agency at 8pm to Ga Hanoi. We were told that not to follow anyone whom do not have our name on it. We met Yew Bee (a single traveler from Singapore) while waiting for the train. She is truly a jovial lady whom self entertained herself with all the picture taking and such, while waiting for onboard. We started talking in the cabin before the train moved off. We took the luxury option this time, not much of a difference compared to soft sleepers except for a LCD TV and HIFI in cabin which are not used throughout the journey. The bed is seriously too firm! Feels like sleeping on a wooden block. I guess I was too tired knocked out after the train set off for the Lao Cai station.

Arrived at Lao Cai around 7pm, and board the Sapa Summit Hotel transfer to Sapa. While waiting, we met Debra (a lady from Perak). We arrived at the hotel around 8pm had breakfast and set off for light trekking 12km down sloped. Just optimal to prepare from hard trekking tml up mount fansipan. It turns out to be a private tour. Just the 2 of us, tour guide and 2 escorts.. Oops! I mean young girls from the Black Hmong village, with intention to sell us their handicrafts. The trekking took us through 2 villages - Lao Chai and Tavan. On the way, we met the Red Zay minorities. at the end of our trekking, we were transported back to our hotel by minibus. And free and easy for the rest of the day. Sapa is a small and laid back small town. Nothing much, other than the Sapa market. Dog meats were on sale.. Cruelity :( Back in the hotel for dinner then rested around 7pm before the strenuous trek tomorrow.

Woke up at 7pm recharged and had breakfast (same dishes) slacked in the room till 9am before the start of our hard trekking. Kind of worried though.. We met our tour guide Chin Su, very funny guy as well as our porter, a quiet yet sincere guy. We arrived at the Tram Nui Xe station around 10am and started 'easy' trekking according to our guide, to the first base camp at 2200m where we had lunch. We had bagelette. After lunch, we continued trekking up till the second base camp 2800m. I knew that once we hit 2500m our body will start to deteriorate as we are not suitable to living on such a high altitude. I started panting hard when we went beyond 2500m, I am very worried that acute mountain sickness (AMS) might hit me as I didn't exactly prepare before this hike, so I went real slow. I struggled and persevered and arrived at Base Camp 2 (2800m) before nightfall. Night sets in as soon as the clock strikes 1845hr. We had dinner in the pre-pitched tents. The temperature dropped after nightfall. End of warming up day.

Due to my crawling speed, we started ascending upon daybreak (0600hrs). We ascended till 2900m and decend till 2700m before heading upwards to 3143m (summit). We arrived back at base camp 2 (2800) around 2pm had a quick lunch and started decending till Base camp 1 (2200m). The descend was tough, accompanied with strong wind, rain and night trek before arriving at 2200m. We had dinner together with Chin Su in the kitchen before knocking out. My appetite wasn't too well and didn't had much. The temperature dropped drastically with the pouring rain through the night. I shivered for the whole night, even the heat packs didn't work this time. Brrrr... *cold*

Awoken by the noises from the other campers, around 0630hrs with a cat right beside YX. Had breakfast before descending to the Tram Nui Xe station. Arrived at the Tram Nui Xe station around 1100hrs, transferred back to the sapa summit hotel. Checked in and bathed before heading out for lunch at a hillside cafe in front of La Grenouille hotel. Nice Pho Bo and Kafe She! After wondering around the sapa market we went back to the hotel to do some cleaning up for the trekking equipments and watched some classical drama channel before dinner. During dinner, the power tripped several times before they managed to fix the circuit breaker. Resting in process..

It is already Sunday! Didn't really feel like I was on a trip as we were trekking non-stop since we arrived in sapa. Tired! We departed from our hotel at 715am for the Bac Ha market. The bus journey took around 3hrs, arrived at the Bac Ha market (another tourist trap with the 'art' of ctrl C and ctrl V) around 1030am and we were given 1.5hrs to shop around the market before lunch. There is a horse, birds and Cattles markets other than the usual handicraft. The lunch was great other than the rice that tasted like rubber. We continued our tour through a Flower Hmong village, the kitchen and furnishing in the huts are just basics. There is a handsome horse found in the village. Mother pig and ten or more piglets?!?! Goodness! Now I know why my mum always talks abt Mu4 Zhu1! Haha.. The journey continued on to the border within Lao Cai and China (Yunnan - Kunming City) literately all you have to do to get a Chinese stamp is to just walk over.. It is so near! Lol.. The bus dropped us off at a guesthouse just across Ga Lao Cai. Without much option, we wandered aimlessly around the small city (rather town) to kill some time before dinner is served and our train back to hanoi at 9pm. Sianz.. Watching the staff setting the table up for dinner. Dinner was simple fare; fried rice with egg. We left Ngoc Ha guesthouse and headed off to Ga lao cai shortly. The lady boss is nice and she speaks mandarin too! There are some hipcups at the station, the train (SP6) was delayed. It is the first time I need to cross the tracks as to board our train. We only managed to get the hard sleepers this time, however it wasn't as bad as I imagined or maybe I was tired out by the day's itinerary. The mattress was soft, just that the pillow was a way too flat (I need to put it above my backpack) for a comfortable night rest.

We arrived in Ga Long Bien around 630am and took a taxi over to our hotel at Le Quoc Su. Unfortunately, they didn't have a room till noon. We started the day with seeking for coffee powder in Hang Buom, a nice lady made a cup of Weasel 1 (strong) coffee for me but I didn't patronize her as the price quoted were way too steep or should I say tourist price. 100g of blue mountain for 8usd?!?! Crazy! That is like thrice the price in HCMC. A total ripped off. we started roaming around the northern part of Hanoi City. Around 1130am, we went to Green Tangerine for lunch! Haha.. Simply recalling it made me so excited! Duck (red meat) accompanied with Shiraz is just the best combination. Rock on! After lunch, I started my shopping spree with a Crumpler bag, T-shirts, Souvenirs, etc and for once I ran out of Dongs! Luckily, one of the shop owner is willingly to take my SGD and exchange dongs for us. Having too much stuffs on hands, we decided to head back to our hotel to check in. :) we were allocated a room on the first level with a balcony. Cosy layout - country style. I napped for awhile before dinner. Yx and I parted for dinner on our own as we had different agenda. He will be heading for the puppets show. While I had already covered the entire hanoi during my last trip. I started roaming on my own and met a couple of nice people along the way in the art galleries. Initially, I only had intention to roam near my hotel, or sticking to only the straight paths that lead me back to the hotel but like always I wandered off. I went onto an art street with lots of large art galleries, captivated by one of the cat painting and walked into one of the art galleries spoke to the boss and come to know that the painting was painted by a renowned local artist who is in his fifties, guess how much it costs? Usd$650 (way off budget) quite tempted though as I got my cards with me. I also noticed that north painters paint based on their feel and likings unlike the south that do more on reproduction paintings. I moved on to the next gallery and picked up a painting before heading back to the hotel. Poor direction sense of mine led me in the wrong direction again. Gave up with the map and just asked for directions to the hoam kiam lake, no one local can miss that. Lol.. Started navigating from the lake is way easier as compared to the opera theatre.. Went pass little hanoi hostel 2, the place where I stayed during the previous trip in Hanoi before arriving in Ly Quoc Su. Home sweet hotel :)

Woke up at 630am, laze around a bit before getting breakfast on the ground floor at 730am. :) prepared by two cute Vietnamese boys whom wants me to call them handsome. Lol.. It is baguette with omelette, splendid! We went out for a last min shopping managed to buy my North Face fleece and waterproof outer layer (no surprise it is orange in color). Packed KFC before going back to the hotel for a final washed up before departing for the airport. Our taxi pickup was early, however the ride to the airport took more than an hour as the traffic condition wasn't favorable. The flight is on schedule - (Jetstar is recommended unlike tiger) on the way back to Singapore. Landed in Singapore terminal 1 on time.
