Ear drum

Errr... where is my...

Met up with my colleagues from the government’s loanshark department recently. We watched WallE and had supper at this noodles and flower tea snack house at FarEast. During the supper, we talked about how we actually celebrated birthday during the NS years and after. Apparently, I was asked too. Somehow, I just cannot recall what I actually did so I just gave a general kind of answer – “Get together and eat…”

My colleagues then asked me again on how I celebrated my recent birthday that had just passed. I gave a general kind of answer again – “Get together and eat…”, but added with “and also Kbox too!” Then one of them was like exclaiming “Oh! Oh! Kbox! They must be giving you surprise like someone brought in the cake with lighted candles and this karaoke set was immediately cut with Birthday song right?!” At that moment I was stunned as none of that actually happened. My mind was like “OH YA!!! FORGET ABOUT THE SURPRISES AND THE BIRTHDAY CAKES, WHERE IS MY BIRTHDAY SONG?” Now then I realized what happened the other day seems more like a dramatic gathering to me...

THE DRAMATIC "GATHERBRATION"
After our lunch at a japanese fusion kind of restaurant at parco, MR. Y and Mr K left. The rest of us then went to this K-buffet session at marina sq. During the K, there was a point where Mr. B signal to Ms. A about going out to take some stuffs. A few minutes after that, another 3 person stepped out of the room, leaving me and another person (whom I seriously forget who left in the room accompanying me).

While the other person in the room is singing and my mind was – “Eh… why so sudden all went out to take things… Oh My!!! Don’t tell me they are giving me surprise? A surprise cake? How they manage to bring that cake out? Could it be Mr Y? So he is the one buying the cake? that why he says he is going off early lah~ Aiyo!!! How huh? Aiyo!!!” Apparently, the other person is still engrossed in his singing while I’m thinking of how to handle the surprises. Another few minutes passed, I can see my friends back facing me and standing at the doorway. One of the few is even talking to the Kbox staff. I was like – “Oh my gosh!!! Are they borrowing lighter from the staff to light the candles… Arghhh!!! They’re coming in…HOW???”

In the end, my friends brought in bowls of ice-cream and plates of mini sliced cakes. They started tasting the ice-cream with each person holding different flavours. A pail of water was like poured over me and that sparks of excitement dies off (-___-). I then realized, the K-buffet package also comprises of cakes and ice-cream.What actually happened was that the time was running out. All of them therefore went to take the desserts so as not to "waste" the money. That marks the beginning of my EMO.

Soon after that, the karaoke set shows “ZHU WO SHENG RI KUAI LE” will be the next song on the list. My mind then striked with “Since there doesn’t seems to be any surprise, I just have to sing that song to myself lor”. Well, I did get to sing that song but I did not manage to complete it as I only sang the first verse. I’m really quite pissed of at that moment!!! I’m singing that very song for the supposed to be my celebration day, and people are like what commenting harmonizing not good enough and what tune not high enough and this and that. I nearly shouted out just like what Mr. R treats Mr. B. I’m surprised I didn’t, and just passed the mic to the next person.

After that, I kept eating cakes and ice-cream just to cover up my emptiness. At the same time, I’m also thinking about that “Zhu Wo Shen Ri Kuai Le” lyrics, making myself feel as if like I’m alone celebrating the birthday in that very crowded room. Eventually, after we walked out of the room, I’m back to normal again…

Errr.... guys!!! forgetting about the surprises, cakes or watever.... where is my birthday song huh? Hai.... Anyway, forget it le... I only get to realise it only when someone asked me how I celebrated my birthday... This really shows I forgotten about it too LOL...

Back to the gathering with my colleagues… (pictures speak a thousand words)

A night of Turandot

Went to see a well-known Opera for the first time of my life on Tuesday night. If you’re not sure what an Opera is, according to dictionary.com, it is an extended dramatic composition, in which all parts are sung to instrumental accompaniment that usually includes arias, choruses, and recitatives.

Angie and I sat at the last second level of the theatre (not a bad view afterall, just that the face of the Opera singer seems rather small). As soon as we were seated, we saw many well-dressed ‘angmohs’ in gowns, formal wear and this there is a gentleman don on some kind of Russian Royal Family clothing with such exaggerating pattern that I have ever seen don on a man. Anyway, luckily enough, both of us not under dressed that night.

Back to the Opera, the biggest issues are the language and the pacing. Although Turandot is set in China in legendary times, the whole Opera is in Italian. Most of the time, I’m turning my view from the Opera singer to the electronic signboards (a screen that shows both English and Chinese translations of the lyrics) and back to the Opera singer again. These really interrupt my viewing experience. Moreover, some of the translation is not that helpful in following the plot.

Example I
One of the scene is about the Male lead singer conveys a message on how deeply he was attracted by Turandot. Somehow, this electronic signboard keeps me thinking about why is the male lead so attracted by a guy. The mistake is instead of translating it to “She is the… and the air is filled with…“, they actually put “He is the… and the air is filled with…”

Example II
This scene is about Calaf, the male lead, vows to melt Turandot’s heart of ice with the fire of his love. When Turandot’s part was over and Calaf started to sing, the screen still shows the same lyrics of what Turandot had just sang. Although I don’t actually understand Italian, but obviously I know they are singing different things.

As mention earlier about the pacing, I'm too used to action movies, which routinely feature shootings, sex scenes, car chases, stabbings, plane crashes, explosions. Whereas in the Opera, it takes three performers as long as 15 minutes to convey a message such as, “We’re bored!'' The performer conveys this by moving around the stage with the accompaniment of an orchestra playing western instruments. Every so often the orchestra makes a different noise and at that instant the performers suddenly stops and stares directly at the audience with an expression of what appears to be excitement, as if to say, `”We are still bored!''

Not forgetting the stage designs. Besides the costumes and some of the props (The big Gong, the weapon, the scroll and the minister's working desk), nothing seems to be oriental to me. In some of the scene, there was this very big humanlike face hang behind the emperor. Till now, i'm still not sure which part of the face means CHINA. Oh ya!!! Even the stairways used were so Roman style.

I know I am not in the best position to make suggestions, but if the Chorus can sing louder, the message on conveying “We’re bored” to be shorter, props used to be more oriental and accurate with on-time translation to be shown, everything will be BRAVO! Overall, the singing of the main lead is pretty good (especially the Liu). I'm glad I did not find spending hard earn money on the Opera is a waste, as it is really a one of a kind experience.

PS: Video on the left is what I found from youtube... Not sure where it was filmed...

祝我生日快乐

It was believed that evil spirits were particularly attracted to birthday boys and girls. To protect them, friends and family would gather around the birthday person and bring them good wishes. It was thought that giving gifts brought good cheer to further help ward off evil spirits.

If I never receive any gifts from you, it may shows that you does not even bothers or cares… LOL Just kidding!!! I seriously thank all of you who sent me the good wishes in the form of SMS, presents, cards verbally, emails etc.

I received some very interesting gifts from my colleagues at my part-time job. Although they are not in very presentable form (err… not sure what word to use =X), but they managed to do me something at the very last 10 minutes of work. I also have with me some very heart warming gifts. Thanks a lot again… All of you must have gone through many difficulties or killed many brain cells in getting the gifts.

Not forgetting those SMS, don’t remind me of that SINGLE status leh… LOL~

PS: I still like the feeling of receiving gifts… Hee~
