The end of a year

31 December 2012

2012...you kicked our rear!  From a semi-icky pregnancy to RSV to coughs to strep throat (twice) to an allergic reaction to Amoxicillin to back surgery to rotator cuff tendonitis to double ear infections (twice) to a foot injury to breathing treatments to allergies...we have had a tough year health-wise.  Glad to have insurance, sad to have to use it.  But with faces like Jack's and Kate's, sickness is easy to forget for most of the day.
Practicing smiles is new for Jack, and I am quite certain he thinks he is producing the best in his bag of tricks.  He gets a reaction from the receiver and B-I-N-G-O...the smile returns.  Serious love!
 Mixmaster Jack on the turntable.
Gender-bending with the doll house.  Bless Kate's heart for letting him play with it and not FREAKING out (as I would have).
Organization attempt for all of the clutter.  Choking hazards out of reach.
At a wedding reception at the end of the year.  One of the few pictures of us.  One of the few where I don't have hot sticks in my neck.
 Mama:  Jack, it's nap time.
Jack: Mama, I am just going to look at you and smile.  I am not tired.
Mama:  If you are going to be so darn cute, I am just going to take your picture.

Win-Win!
If Kate stood in the bathtub I freaked out and made her sit down.  When Jack stands in the tub I just hope it ends well. I am hoarse from telling him to sit down!
Bring it on, 2013.  The Masons are ready!!!

Onward, Christmas Day and 2012

25 December 2012

Guess who got a new, plush Radio Flyer? That's right...Jack and Kate.  Padded seats, a carry bag attached on the back, removable seats, cup holders, and a canopy.  I see trips to Starbucks, Dunkin' Donuts, Kroger, and walks in Mom's 'hood happening this summer.  Jack is enjoying the riding aspect of all Christmas gifts.  Crazy to think that he will be completely mobile soon.  With Kate, it seemed like I waited for each milestone.  Maybe it is because I read the books, blogs, articles, and anticipated what was coming - "Expect the first tooth during __ month; By __ month you child should be crawling/smiling/pulling up/walking/talking/driving."  I knew what was coming.  With Jack?  I have not done as well reading, recording, or anticipating.  He seems to just DO it.  The last two teeth have come and there have been no celebrations or acknowledgements.  They are just THERE.  The pulling up and walking using furniture is just Jack trying to be part of the action or reach what he can't have (iPad, dolls, phones, remotes, paper, shoes, etc.)  Jack has been such a happy baby and such a fun addition.  His smile is infectious.  Both kid's smiles are the best.

The gesture of pure happiness riding with Jack.
Frannie got Kate some new sparklers for Christmas.  We used them on the cake at dinner.
This year was a fun year for mom.  Normally, there isn't anything she wants or anything Fran and I can think of to get her.  A shirt here, a new cosmetic there, some favorite candy in the stocking.  But this year?  Apple TV was something we thought of early and Fran set it up for her.  Even when she opened the HDMI cord and said, "Why would I need this?  I don't have Apple TV!" we were able to stifle giggles.  But when she got her "big" gift, she was completely unsure what it contained.  Wrapped in a funny way due to the box giving it away, she was perplexed.
A baritone ukulele for Mom!  She can join the Mason family band!  Rehearsals are pretty spontaneous, so she needs to have it -- and her phone with her at all times!
Another fun toy for an adult...Mom got Grandaddy a replica of Old Crow, Jim's old P-51 mustang.  Signed by Bud Anderson even!
He really was surprised,  I think.
Dude just took it all in.  Clapped when others did, smiled with others, and generally enjoyed the day.

Kate wanted to see everything others received.  She wanted to know who opened what; very sweet.
I am very blessed; I know this.

Christmas Eve, Christmas Morning with the Masons

Attempting Christmas card pictures proved, yet again, to be something that is not easily accomplished.  Even armed with a new, faster camera, I was unable to capture both kids giving me their cutest smile at the same time.  I have two hams who are super quirky, super funny, and not at all angelic in posing for the camera.  I need to give it up, throw in some props, and let them go to town.  I surrender, sweet children, to your comical faces, lovely (and not-so-lovely) expressions.  You are, after all, my children, and your mama can't smile for a picture to save her life!

We went to the Mason's for appetizers and Christmas with Matt's cousins on Christmas Eve.  I did not clue into Jack's new tooth and just kept snapping pictures of a cute, drooling little guy.  Happy 8th tooth, Mr. Jack!
Kate and Mason.  Good thing he loves his Katerbugs because she rules the roost with him.
Kate received some birthday presents from her great aunt Bonnie.  A horse for her American Girl and a bathtub for her as well (for Christmas).  Kate was super excited about the accessories and immediately had all parts (and there were a lot of parts) out on the floor.
A quick round of horseplay with Papaw ensued for Kate and Mason.  "Stop it, Papaw!" then back at it.  I give up.
Christmas Eve tradition brought about going to the Sheriff house to see Santa arrive at 8:15.  He walks up the back stairs outside and drops off the big red sack full of presents for Brandon to retrieve and read out the names of the good girls and boys.  This was the first year Kate was totally into it.  It helped to have her best school friend, Addy Reese, there to play with.  It was also the first year I didn't have to follow her around -- she had her friends and I had mine.  Jack was turning into a pumpkin close to 8, so we headed home immediately after Santa arrived.
Christmas Eve at home, after Santa visited.
Christmas morning Kate opened her gifts from us and checked out what Santa brought.  She was helpful with Jack as well, showing him what toys Santa brought and how to bang on and play with his as well as hers.  Really, I couldn't ask for a better kid to have as a big sister.  She gets it; she really does.  Not a jealous bone about him and it is the sweetest thing to see them together.  I can't get enough of it.

Bath crayons from Santa
 Jack's rocktivity table from Santa.
Jack attempting to unwrap his present from mama and daddy.
Wrapping paper does not taste as good as it looks.
Two new Barbie books from Aunt Sara and Uncle Jeremy.
A new bone for Drake from Santa.  Drake was on the good list.
A Lalaloopsy from Grandpa and Grandma.
Back to the Mason's for Christmas morning.  Kate received new ear muffs and she actually let me take a picture of them before she sped into the next package.
Mason received a Leaf Blower and a Weedeater, complete with safety goggles.  The rest of the presents had to wait.  And wait.  And wait.  Mason was happy with these!
New puppets and a puppet theatre from Meemaw and Mimi and Papaw.
Meemaw got in the spirit and unwrapped several gifts.
 Mason and the blower.
 Mimi's new Kuerig.
Jack's new car from Meemaw.  She gave him the most fun gift because of the steering wheel.  We have only taken it outside once, but I am quite certain it will be a hit and the stroller will go away.
Aunt Jenny gifted make-up to Kate.

December happenings

15 December 2012

Two reasons I have been bad about blogging...Blogger told me I had run out of room for posting space.  I am almost ready to print the second book, but I had to figure out how to make it to year's end.  Choosing pictures wisely and deleting past pictures has been a task these past weeks.  The second reason I have been bad at posting is that my camera broke.  Two days before Kate's birthday party.  So all of my pictures for a couple of weeks were taken with my iPhone.  This actually helps me post pictures because they are not high quality photos, but I find I don't take many of the important events.

Let's hope Blogger lets me finish out 2012...I would really like to be finished with the year myself!

Kate got a canopy for her bed from daddy and me.  She had mentioned she wanted one, but they are not as easy to find as they were in the 70s, I am sure.  I found this one and she is in love.  It does have twinkle lights at the top, which are not on in this picture.  Each night we get in bed and turn it on to read her book.  She doesn't sleep with them on, but there is something magical about reading, singing our silly song, our camp song, and our prayers under the light of twinkle lights.  The small things, people!
Kate had her parent visitation at Dance in December.  Again...no camera.  We are actually going to change classes for the new year, but the same technique will be taught by Joy.  What a fun treat!

We baked lots of treats, some dairy free, others as dairy free as we could make them.  I love, love, love baking with my girl and passing down that tradition.  It is tough to do with Jack sometimes, but in a couple of years, he will be up there, too, helping.

The day of the Newtown shooting, I could not turn on the tv without crying, like so many people.  Matt, almost fortunately, wasn't able to obsess about the events due to being "busy" at work.  I don't say that lightly.  That night we had plans to go with the Powers family to eat Mexican and then to see a live Nativity show.  Somehow, both kids knew what daddy needed when he got home.  Though this picture was taken with my iPhone and is a little out of focus, it could be my most favorite picture of Matt.
At the Advent Journey, we saw a real camel, along with going on this massive journey through rooms to a bazaar/marketplace where the kids were taught about ancient times. Quite amazing and so magical for all of us, considering the happenings of the day.
Kate and I went to an annual mommy-daughter cookie decorating party where we took some hostess gifts.
Jack is enjoying the kitchen in Kate's playroom.  Immediately he takes the cookies out of the oven and pulls them all off.  The next activity is getting out the ice cream scoops that are behind the princess tea set.  Busy little chef!
Carolyn gave Kate a container of 101 cookie cutters.  She did not, however, sign up for a date to actually make the cookies with Kate.  Both kids have enjoyed playing with them on the carpet and putting them back in the barrel, shooting goals, etc.
Kate and I decorated a gingerbread house.  She really did an amazing job on choosing patterns.  She had quite a bit of patience with it and the only thing I really did was put the icing on each candy to make it stick.  She did the rest.  The reindeer Peeps were a fun addition!
Jack has been playing in the guitar room, enjoying his independent play!
Kate and Caroline have matching nightgowns.  Caroline was a new addition at Kate's family party (thank you, Mom, Grandaddy, and Martha) and Fran got the nightgowns for her for Christmas.
 Yep, still in the kitchen!
Jack got a new car that is indoors now.  This is his latest face/pose.
 "oh, no!"
Checking out the outside.  Ezra was on the other side of the glass.
