16 Random Things about Me...

Tagged by Jo Tay

Rules: Once you’ve been tagged, you are supposed to write a note with 16 random things, facts, habits, or goals about you. At the end, choose 16 people to be tagged. You have to tag the person who tagged you. :)

  1. My left eye's degree is lower than my right eye's.  This is because in Primary 4, I went blind in the left eye and had to rely on my right eye for a few months.  Apparently, after numerous scans, what was a suspected brain tumour turned out to be a bag of mucus at the tip of my nasal cavity which was pressing on my eye nerve.  Upon that discovery, I was scheduled for an operation the next day as it was growing at a rate that would result in blindness in both eyes if it was delayed further. I recovered immediately the next day, after coughing/vomiting out a sink full of mucus.
  2. I am able to relate to girls better than to guys.  It could be because I hung out with a lot of girls in my adolescent years and because my favourite show is America's Next Top Model and Project Runway.
  3. I'd like to think I am an artsy fartsy person and have a knack for such things.  I like beautiful things and I enjoy acting, fashion, photography and beautiful things in general.
  4. I have no prior training in photography... ie self taught so if you think my pictures are nice, refer to point 3.  I don't like taking pictures of myself because I think I'm ugly.
  5. I was accepted into New York University Stern school of Business - I applied there partly because I wanted to do a cross major in the famous Tische School of Arts. Alas! I had no money to go.
  6. I acted in a short film project as a favour to someone and was a TV extra in some Sunday morning kid's drama in 2006.
  7. I am a pessimist and I dislike change.
  8. I felt that 2008 was a bad year despite achieving good grades, traveling out of country 5 times to Israel, US, Guangzhou & HK, China (HK, Suzhou, Shanghai, Macau), Penang.  I felt unsatisfied
  9. I would go for plastic surgery to smoothen out my skin and correct my lips.   When I smile, one side is larger than the other.  And my teeth too.  Eeks.
  10. Despite the fact that I like shopping, I am very thrifty.  I've never bought anything above $200. (Only last year, I bought a pair of AX jeans for $150 which was a record).  And I only shop during sales.  I can predict Zara sales with deadly accuracy.
  11. The reason why I'm working so hard in SMU is because I've always felt that I didn't put in enough and thus underachieved.  I want to see what I can achieve if I really put in my all.  I'm doing well in accounting and finance but I generally don't like numbers, except
  12. I buy nice clothes because I don't belong to the category of humans who make clothes look good.  I think my dress sense has leapfrogged over the past 2 years.
  13. My waist size is 27.5 inches.  I work out quite often.  I'm no longer a skinny freak but I wished I had bigger arms, and my abs are still playing hide and seek.  They only appear under specific lighting conditions.
  14. I am a kinky person. (I guess nobody wants to know that.)
  15. I am not a sociable person.  I dislike networking sessions and meeting new people takes out a lot of energy out of me.
  16. I shudder sometimes when I see myself on video.  Cos I think I look ugly and my actions are a little too... ermz.
I should have taken the 25 things about me thing.  16 doesn't seem to be enough.

Of a gay uncle and getting married...

Ah Chinese New Year - the time of the year where you meet your I-meet-you-once-in-a-year-oh-thank-heavens relatives.  Then again, I always look forward to visiting this particular distant aunt of mine for she stays in a palace which she and her husband built from scratch (literally).  And she whips up amazing stuff (see previous post).

So we were all gathered around the dining table eating chicken rice balls, savouring curry and black sauce nonya duck.  Everything was fine and dandy until the topic of the day shifted to my uncle, my gay uncle.  And then, the most interesting event of CNY happened!

The touchy topic of marriage (mine's at the girlfriend stage) surfaced and the fireworks (okay, I exaggerated) began.  The distant auntie asked of his age and upon knowing it didn't begin with a 4 proceeded with a string of pronouncements about how he would find one before he turned 40.  Truth of the matter is, she doesn't know that he is happily attached to his bf of 3 years.  In fact, both were heading to the observatory tower at the science centre that day to watch the partial eclipse.

It was a rather long pronouncement, and I was listening "intently", I couldn't help looking at my cousin and both of us were giving the "erm, hahaha, lalalala, she doesn't know" face which was so funny.  An awkward silence descended upon the table.  I wanted to laugh.  Burst out laughing, with a mouthful of coke.

Oh I wish Gloria was there.  I can't imagine the things that we could have said after that.

Said uncle left shortly after.

On another note, something funny came out of my conversation with Jo just now.

Ah new year and all the food.  Stuffing myself. Fats. No abs.

Auntie Monica makes mean chicken rice balls, plus absolutely lemak nonya curry, and black sauce nonya duck.  Her parents are from Malacca and are both peranakan.  The food was heavenly, and her house, a bungalow in a windy spot in Bukit Timah, celestial.  Oh I wish I were her kid.  And I have a very good looking distant cousin, who gets even more good looking as the years go by.  Gloria, marry him and your kids may inherit gorgeous genes!

Dinner at grandma's place where I tasted babi ponteh for the first time in my life!  Loved the strong garlic flavour to the dish.  And so, the usual round of Blackjack at grandma's place.  I won big this year.  :).  Bigger bets as you get older.  Haha.

New Bedsheets

 Ben sent me this...

My mom bought new bedsheets and they are hideous.  It's like an explosion of uber ooggly flowers.  My bed looks as if it's covered in some weird STD.  And on close inspection, the thing in the middle of each flower looks eerily like... a nipple.

It's a stark contrast to the nice brown 450 thread count egyptian cotton bedsheets that I got for them.  I don't quite agree with the pattern but then again, it was the only thing that fit within the "budget" ie vouchers.  On hindsight, I think the dark maroon would have been nice.

My poor bed.  It's like it's dressed in latest Pasar Malam fashion. I cry for thee. :'(

Honk!

For $25, Honk! definitely exceeded my expectations.  The set was simple, but the script and the cast more than made up for it.  The vocals were competent and the script had a good dose of wit. The overall plot was the simple story of the ugly duckling but on the whole, it was entertaining and flowed well.  Kudos to Margaret Chan for guest starring.  Absolutely hilarious.

After the musical, headed over to Fullerton for a drink.

Nice place.  nice drink. nice price.

New Year, New Hair

Just paid my stylist a visit today in preparation for CNY.  Surprisingly, prices remain the same so I think I should have given him an angbao or something.  Anyhow, I told him to give me something different when he suggested "the usual".  He was afraid of giving me something too out of this world as I was still studying but I told him to go ahead - I'm in university for goodness sake.

A little apprehensive when he told me that it would involve shaving the sides off and all.  Asked for a picture.  He didn't have one.  So, I crossed me finger and asked him to go ahead.  So there, an edgy hairstyle entails edges and I think there are some around on my head now.
In other news, the Gucci Spring/Summer collection adorning gorgeous models strutting down the RW was shown on Channel U last night.  I was oo-iinngg and ahhhiinggg and gasping (to the yikes I won't ever wear them looks).  Mom said that if she found a good job, she would get me this:

... I hardly doubt so.

And I like the white detailing on the cuff of these pants off the Prada collection FW 09/10.

New gym equipment

My condo gym has new gym equipment.   I HEART the new layout! They shifted the combined machine to the other side and in place of it, against the wall is a whole range of fixed weights.  No need to waste time with the adjustable weights anymore!  And the gym bench is right in front of the mirrors so it's tres easy to ensure the correct form.

I can now carry 17.5kg (on each side) for chest presses.  :)

It's Sunday...

...and I'm holed up in a GSR in school.  Waiting for a project meeting to start.

Woe is me cos it's my second sunday in school, and it's the second week of school.

I need a life.

I feel...

...like Job right now.  As in Job in shit with everything in his life going very wrong for him.

Just when I thought I was a teeny weeny bit happier, when my mood started to pick up, I actually dropped my Macbook charger while chasing for the last bus home yesterday.  If only, if only, if only, I had just taken a few steps back when I heard a loud thud.  My spoilt mouse turned out to be a decoy for my charger.  Nehnehporkz.  And so, another bad start to the new year, on top of another Sunday in school tomorrow and a general lack of sleep.

Plus $150 gone down the drain.

I think God is playing a trick on me by tying my fortunes to the economy.

On a side note, I took away quite a bit from the Bain and Co. Case com preliminary round.   We could have done much much better but the main takeaway is that the Starbucks experience really isn't all that special.  We went to Starbucks after the case com just to check it out.  So our Starbucks experience has been redefined - it was the experience of trudging through it's opportunities and making recommendations for the competition.

Lazy Saturday afternoon with ZX at Starbucks and talking about life.  She keeps saying "You're so funny."  I must be a clown.  A CLOWN.

Star struck

Keluar Baris.  Boo Junfeng.  I heart SMU Film Fest for bringing them in.

And I'm itching to do some acting to help me escape from reality.

Meanwhile, Bain & Co case com, another ethics presentation and more (and more and more) corp and tax readings.

I suspect...

...that my mom got all the chinese new year decorations from Geylang Serai.

Last year, we had our walls painted yellow.

My mother has outdone herself again.  The fake flowers and all.  And don't even get me started on the fabric that she bought to sew the new curtains.

Last night, I couldn't hold my comments within me and burst out declaring "I can't take this anymore."  My dad gave me the why-can't-you-appreciate-anything look.  I gave him the how-can-the-both-of-you-choose-such-hideous-looking-things-look in return.

Woe to me.  The only thing that's going to be nice this coming New Year is the deep brown bedsheets that I got for them using the Robinsons voucher.  I shudder to think they would have chosen something more flowery.

Yikes.

Gloria, bless your soul.  You're not in Singapore.  I will take all your angbaos and split it with Jonathan.  99 - 1.  Muahahaha.

Edit: An analogy of the new lights.  The old ones look like a 20-year old woman, the new ones look like  70 year old.  Droopy.

Of Reservist, Disrupted Internship plans and Fake flowers

I wonder if I offended the government in anyway possible.  Having sacrificed 2 years of my life to serve the country, I would have thought that I had paid my dues.  Unfortunately, it seems like the SAF is bent on wringing me dry and in the process, foil any, if not all, of my plans to further my education.  To add salt to the wound, many of my friends have yet to be notified of their reservist units.

Don't get me wrong, it's not that I do not wish to serve my country.  I just seek some form of understanding from the S and the A and the F in taking into consideration possible plans that NSmen, especially during the summer period.  It is an extremely important period for us to do internships, which is essential in gaining a competitive edge for future employment.  While there are safeguards in place i.e. the law to ensure that employers release employees for reservist training, there is no law that forbids discrimination.

As a candidate applying for internship, my ICT period is smack in the middle of summer and is a huge disruption to completing a 10-week internship.  In the current economic climate, most companies are cutting down on hiring interns, making it even harder to secure an internship position.  So imagine the disadvantage one is at when you tell a prospective hirer that you have to leave mid-way through.  With so many candidates vying for the same position, would you stand a chance?

My initial plans to do an internship in China are officially ruined as the school refuses to issue a letter requesting for a deferment.  I am extremely frustrated at the state of things, especially since I feel it is terribly unfair to individuals like me who have served in an active unit during NS.   Others who were lucky to end up in slack units are either forgotten or posted to similarly slack reservist units.  There is something foul about this system and the lack of transparency is killing me.  I AM EXTREMELY FRUSTRATED.

If the SAF keeps calling me back for reservist during summer, I highly doubt that I can EVER complete my internship requirements.  SO SCREW ME YOU IDIOTS.  URGH!

More change

I am ADVERSE to change.

We have new lights cos one of the lamp things completely broke off, mum's got a china mama interior designer in cos she wants to redo the kitchen. And she's been stuffing her kids with weird concoctions and recipes.

Long days

one night.
held hands.
conversations till 4.
Fairy tale ending? I wish.
Ended too soon.
Fate? Cruel.
Drop a message? I wait.
still
waiting.
My days are
long...

Love?

It ended before it started.

A small spark makes it way up into the night sky before it bursts into something beautiful... my firework died out before its beautiful burst.

Why did you light my spark, snuff it out so abruptly and leave me wanting for more?

Circumstances dictate our fate.

I'm sad.  Sigh.
