A new skill learned

I have spent the past year learning how to make a korowai (feather cloak) cloak at the local Marae(A special Maori meeting place)  korowai cloak is a ceremonial cloak traditionally made from feathers and flax.  It is a cultural craft of the Maori people of New Zealand.  Now they are made from feather, wool and mop string.  They take a very long time to make.  A woven full sized cloak takes up to 1000 hours to complete.  I have spent the last 12 months making an a4 sized cloak . I have been sick and the children sick a lot of the year so it has taken me longer than most would take.  It has been a wonderful journey for me.  The people I have worked have been amazing and wonderful.

This is my cloak

Woven korowai
Taniko pattern (wool pattern)

It has been wonderful to learn a new skill.
I am going to try a little experimentaion over the next few weeks with these techniques.

Quilt challenge-52 cards in a year

Week 52

This is my 52nd card.  I DID IT!!!!52 cards in a year.  YAH!!

I feel very proud of myself and really thrilled at how much I have learned and how they have all come out.  So here goes on the last card.  This one is also based on the tulip photos.

This card is machine felted with dyed wool roving's and then stitched vertically with thread.  The photo was some tulip fields going back in the distance towards some trees.

I blended the wool roving's together to create different shades.

Skechbook challenge: 7 days of drawing

Boy it is getting to be a challenge to think of what to draw each day but I am going to reach my goal of drawing for 365 days.  Each day I get up and think about what I might do today.  Sometimes inspiration comes quickly and other times it doesn't for a long time.  Here is this weeks collection

Quilt university course

I had hope to get this post done on Wednesday but blogger wouldn't let me download photos again. I have had a lot of problems lately with my server so please be patient with me as I try and sort it out.  Some days it works fine and others.....well lets say I am close to throwing the computer :-).

I am doing a quilt university course with Lyric Kinard at the moment.  It is entitled the artist toolbox.  It has taught me so much and with the help of an amazing tutor given me much more confidence in the design process.  I really feel that it has opened my eyes to look at design more deeply and completely.

Here are some of the things I have been doing

DRAWINGS

MAKING SAMPLES

PAINTING

TAKING PHOTOS

ANALYSING ART

It is a fantasitc course and well worth the investment of time.

Quilt challenge-52 cards in a year

Week 51

Only one week to go.  What a wonderful journey it has been.  I have learned so much in this past year and think the most important thing is perserverance and dedication to a task.

Todays card is still based on tulips.  This one is an ariel shot of the flowers from high up in a plane.  I made the lines with textile paint and a homemade stamp.

I gradiated the paint colours so that it gave the impression of the different colour fields.

I quilted squares on the card to represent the buildings all over the fields.
