General Conference

Saturday Morning Session
Of women and mothers, President Gordon B. Hinckley once said:
“We must never lose sight of the strength of the women. … It is mothers who most directly affect the lives of their children. … It is mothers who nurture them and bring them up in the ways of the Lord. Their influence is paramount. …
“… They are the creators of life. They are the nurturers of children. They are the teachers of young women. They are our indispensable companions. They are our co-workers in building the kingdom of God. How great is their role, how marvelous their contribution.”5
So how do a mother and a father instill in their daughter the ennobling and eternal truth that she is a daughter of God? How do we help her step out of the world and step into the kingdom of God?

Saturday Afternoon Session
We all long for peace. Peace is not just safety or lack of war, violence, conflict, and contention. Peace comes from knowing that the Savior knows who we are and knows that we have faith in Him, love Him, and keep His commandments, even and especially amid life’s devastating trials and tragedies. The Lord’s answer to the Prophet Joseph Smith in Liberty Jail brings solace to the heart:
“My son, peace be unto thy soul; thine adversity and thine afflictions shall be but a small moment;
“And then, if thou endure it well, God shall exalt thee on high.”19
Remember, “God is not the author of confusion, but [the author] of peace.”20 For those who reject God, there is no peace. We all participated in the councils of heaven that provided for moral agency, knowing that there would be mortal pain and even unspeakable tragedy because of the abuse of agency. We understood that this could leave us angry, bewildered, defenseless, and vulnerable. But we also knew that the Savior’s Atonement would overcome and compensate for all of the unfairness of mortal life and bring us peace. Elder Marion D. Hanks had a framed statement on his wall by Ugo Betti: “To believe in God is to know that all the rules will be fair, and that there will be wonderful surprises.”21
What are the sources of peace? Many search for peace in worldly ways, which never have and never will succeed. Peace is not found by attaining great wealth, power, or prominence.22 Peace is not found in the pursuit of pleasure, entertainment, or leisure. None of these can, even when attained in abundance, create any lasting happiness or peace.
Emma Lou Thayne’s beloved hymn asks the appropriate questions: “Where can I turn for peace? Where is my solace when other sources cease to make me whole?”23 The answer is the Savior, who is the source and author of peace. He is the “Prince of Peace.”24

Sunday Morning Session
This knowledge and understanding are available to all mankind. They are contained in truths which are eternal. In Doctrine and Covenants section 1, verse 39, we read, “Behold, and lo, the Lord is God, and the Spirit beareth record, and the record is true, and the truth abideth forever and ever.”
The poet wrote:
Tho the heavens depart and the earth’s fountains burst,
Truth, the sum of existence, will weather the worst,
Eternal, unchanged, evermore.1
Some would ask, “Where is such truth to be found, and how are we to recognize it?” In a revelation given through the Prophet Joseph Smith at Kirtland, Ohio, in May of 1833, the Lord declared:
“Truth is knowledge of things as they are, and as they were, and as they are to come. …
“The Spirit of truth is of God. …
“And no man receiveth a fulness unless he keepeth his commandments.
“He that keepeth [God’s] commandments receiveth truth and light, until he is glorified in truth and knoweth all things.”2
What a glorious promise! “He that keepeth [God’s] commandments receiveth truth and light, until he is glorified in truth and knoweth all things.”

Sunday Afternoon Session
We live today in an era of turbulence and uncertainty, a time the Lord prophesied to Enoch would be marked by “days of wickedness and vengeance” (Moses 7:60). Tribulation and difficult times may lie ahead, yet we too have cause for good cheer and rejoicing, for we live in the last dispensation, when God has restored His Church and kingdom to the earth in preparation for the return of His Son.
President Boyd K. Packer once spoke of his grandchildren and the increasingly troubled world in which they live. He said: “They will see many events transpire in the course of their lifetime. Some of these shall tax their courage and extend their faith. But if they seek prayerfully for help and guidance, they shall be given power over adverse things.”
And later he added: “The moral values upon which civilization itself must depend spiral downward at an ever-increasing pace. Nevertheless, I do not fear the future” (“Do Not Fear,” Ensign or Liahona, May 2004, 77, 78).

Just some quotes from our Sunday RS meeting...

Richard G Scott said, "Are there so many fascinating, exciting things to do or so many challenges pressing down upon you that it is hard to keep focused on that which is essential? When things of the world crowd in, all too often the wrong things take highest priority. Then it is easy to forget the fundamental purpose of life. Satan has a powerful tool to use against good people. It is distraction. He would have good people fill life with “good things” so there is no room for the essential ones. Have you unconsciously been caught in that trap?"

"First, think about your life and set your priorities... Second, set short-term goals that you can reach... Third, through wise budgeting control your real needs and measure them carefully against your many wants in life... Fourth, stay close to your spouse, children, relatives, and friends... Fifth, study the scriptures... Sixth, schedule time for sufficient rest, exercise, and relaxation... Seventh, [as] families, teach one another the gospel, preferably in a weekly family home evening... Finally, pray often as individuals and as families."
M Russell Ballard “Keeping Life's Demands in Balance,” Ensign, May 1987, 13

"How well I know that we can surround ourselves with the material things to the extent that we have no time for the spiritual. Look around and you will see all the gadgets and toys and the nice and the fun things that cause us to squander and pay and to wander and play.

We give our lives to that which we give our time. As I have said, while here in mortality we are subject to time. We also have agency and may do what we will with our time. Let me repeat: We give our lives to that which we give our time." (Elder William R. Bradford)

Some suggestions/comments in class:
*Every morning, write down the things you need to get done for the day, with the most important at the top. Go through your day doing the most important things and go down from there. Even if you don't get everything done on your list... you did the things that mattered most.
*Spend time with your children.  The dishes and household chores can wait, they are only with us a short time in this life.  We need to cherish that time.
*Remember that Heavenly Father might have a different plan for you, so don't get too discouraged if your day doesn't go exactly as planned.

Learn By Faith

Learn By Faith

For those sisters who weren't able to be in Relief Society this past Sunday, we talked about learning by faith. Lorenzo Snow said, "The whole idea of Mormonism is improvement-mentally, physically, morally, and spiritually.  No half-way education suffices for the Latter-day Saint."
He taught us of: Education of the Spirit, Faith, Exertion, and Perseverance

Our teacher shared that, for us, reading the scriptures and gaining knowledge is compared to a child learning the ABC's. They don't learn is all at once and don't work on it one letter at a time (like starting with A, next B, and knowing it right away)  Children learn by repeating it over and over again, beginning to end until they get it.  Just with us, we don't just read the scriptures and remember every single story.  We need to read over and over again so we don't forget. Learning is always an ongoing process...

 Reminders:

Tuesday, February 5th is coming up. We are still in need of thread, scissors, batting, and material (flannel, fleece, cotton, poly...).  We are making lap blankets for local assisted living centers.  Also, we will be sewing them together that night, so please bring a sewing machine if you are willing and able.

*We will be cutting material in 6x6 squares, you are welcome to come with them already cut if you can:)  Or bring the material to me (Raquel Goodman) and I will cut it for you. 2316 Sioux Trl Bar Nunn

Thanks Sisters!

We are rounding up as much material as we can so we can make them on the 5th.

Please call Sister Dixie Bedsaul at 258-8321 if you have material to donate so she can keep a count and know how much more we need to buy.
