Knox Charles Powers - September 22 arrival
At long last, a few pictures for the blog. Knox arrived early on September 22 instead of October 4, taking away my planned two weeks of rest and getting ready time. I had a feeling he was going to come early though, so it wasn't a huge surprise and we were ready enough to bring him home even though things weren't perfect.
Lee and I of course think he is the cutest thing ever, though we do recognize our bias. Lee is one of the most proud and attentive new fathers I've ever seen, and I feel like I've seen a lot. He does as much work as he can to take care of him, though I am doing most of the feeding of course, until I just can't take it and we give him a bottle.
The first two weeks have been very good. He is a good baby, and cries very rarely, except if I wait too long or don't notice right away that he is hungry. But all in all he is a great baby. We've only had a couple of completely sleepless nights, so I consider us quite lucky.
He has already changed a lot. He was born with very dark hair - very close to Heidi's natural color, though it is already lightening up a lot. It is now blond at the roots and darker at the ends, so it's changing a lot. The remainder of his umbilical cord came off today, which was pretty exciting.

Right after his first bath. So clean and awake!

crib update
first things first. the crib is not done. but it is looking awesome! lee has been shellacing (protecting the wood but not with varnish or stain), i have been sanding, and this weekend, we will be gluing it all together! we've had a few absolutely gorgeous days over the past week or so, and have taken advantage of the weather to get some work done on this, the only piece of furniture we have for the kid. :)
unfinished pieces that have been sanded three times and are ready to be stained, the dowels drying on a unique drying rack (read plank stuck with several nails) after their first coat of shellac
lee next to the hanging rack of drying pieces, me sanding the dowels after the first coat of shellac has dried
baby shower boston
my friend emily decided that it was high time for a shower for me here with a bunch of boston folk. it was awesome! she and her roommate liza threw it for me last weekend, and we had a great time. there was great food - laurie called it the classiest food she's ever had at a baby shower ;) - great friends and a lot of fun. i just think it was about the sweetest thing she could have done, and it was great to have some time to hang out with girls and relax since it's been such a busy summer.

laurie and lucy made it up for the party from rhode island

the point of this blog... ;)
ok, ok, so here is an update on my and the ever growing genghis. i was recently told by my midwife that parents can expect their newborn to be born at a weight within 20% of its mother's birth weight. lucky me, i was a petite 9 lbs 2 oz. we're really hoping for 20% less than its mother's birth weight...
regardless, things are progressing quite well. i had another appointment this morning, and at 36 1/2 weeks am now on the weekly schedule. my belly is at 36 cms, right where it should be. the baby's heartbeat is always strong when we get to listen (lee came with me this morning!), and the midwife estimated that it is between 5 and 6 lbs right now. she's relatively new, so she gave me a wide range, but based on my last estimate 2 1/2 weeks ago, i bet the kid is closer to 6.
oh yeah. and i cut my hair again. let's just say i was not pleased with the hairdresser. in fact, i consider this my worst cut ever. but it's my 4th ponytail for locks of love, and likely my last. i admit, i almost cried when he was done i hated it so much. and mostly because when i left the salon we couldn't get it into a ponytail, and that drives me insane to have hair all over my face with no option of pulling it back. i will try to deal. ... ... still trying. ...

lee's visit home
lee had a whirlwind weekend at home over an extended labor day vacation. he took off the wednesday night before the holiday so he could take his dad to a packers game at lambeau field! the following night. the game was great, faked punts, going for two, and just general excitement about the new season. sadly, they lost, however the lee's had an amazing time.
he also went on many adventures with his family. they went canoeing on the kickapoo river, i'm not making that name up, visited the frank lloyd wright architecture school and museum, had breakfast at the cafe, and generally enjoyed having some late summer family time.
by a fluke of timing, his trip was also right when his 10-year high school reunion was held. he took a grand total of two pictures - of the same friend! - so i have nothing to show for that evening. but he did have a good time hanging out with some of his old friends.
i did miss him since i couldn't fly to wi with him for the long weekend, but made it through and tried to stay busy at home getting things ready for genghis.
