We began by hearing from Sister Mayorga, who taught
the dangers of high caffeine drinks, and better ways to get a good night’s
sleep. Elder Olsen taught about avoiding
accidents, especially on left hand turns.
He spends most of the day inspecting cars. Missionaries who get a “10” on the cleaning
inspection get a candy bar, and those who get less than 7 get their cars
confiscated.
President Baker introduced the theme of our
conference, “Working with Members” by explaining that missionaries working on their own have
to find 25 new investigators to get one baptism. When members do the finding, the ratio is 5
to 1. We want our missionaries to gain
the trust and confidence of members, and work closely with them to find more
teaching opportunities. Sister Baker
spoke about Unity, referencing President Benson’s talk on Pride as well as
President Uchtdorf’s recent talk on being Merciful.
We next had our breakout sessions with Zone Leaders
teaching “Dinner Appointments,” “Working with Less Actives,” and “Creative Ways
to Work with Members.” Each day we were
fortunate to have one of our Stake Presidents come with their wives to talk
about “Gaining Member Trust.” President
Keeler of the Santa Monica Stake came on Tuesday, President Larson of the
Downey Stake on Wednesday and President Lam of the Palos Verdes Stake on
Thursday.
After a delicious lunch provided by one of the Stake Relief Societies, the Assistants taught about “Sustaining Our Leaders”. They began an “I Sustain Campaign.” President Baker finished the meeting by teaching about Priesthood Keys and the “Mobilizing the Ward Mission Plan.”
