The planning for the ice sculpture is coming along! I have been watching You Tube videos of ice sculptors at work, so I am starting to get the idea of how these things are done. An idea. That's it--an idea. Doing it for real, I am certain, is going to be a whole different matter.
I also have accumulated an assortment of tools. Yes, I have even procured a chainsaw. I am not certain I will use it, but I am getting some encouragement from folks who think I should give it a try. Crazy me, I have frozen a mini ice block in my freezer, and I hope to practice a bit before the event.
I have developed a design of a cat that has a decent silhouette profile, if I go the chainsaw route, but also can be chiseled into a relief sculpture if I opt out of the chainsaw approach. We shall see which direction I go. I have been envisioning a cat shape trapped in a 20" X 40" X 9.5" block of ice, waiting for me to free it and allow it to come alive.
Watching the videos has given me great respect for ice artists. I am sure that my very primitive design will in no way come close to the mastery of some of these ice wizards. But it is fun to give something like this a try!
I hope that you will come out to the Canton First Friday Ice-O-Rama to see me and other artists at work! Stop in and see all the galleries and studios and enjoy dinner at one of the fine downtown restaurants. Downtown Canton--It's a happening place!

Canton First Friday Ice Sculpture--BZTAT's Latest Adventure
A couple of months ago, I received a letter from the Canton Special Improvement District about the January 2009 First Friday "Ice-O-Rama". the letter asked me if I would be interested in carving an ice sculpture for the event. There was nothing compulsory about it--Just a simple inquiry. No was an acceptable answer.
But as I am often want to do, I said, "Sure! I can do that!"
Keep in mind that I am a capable artist, but my realm is typically 2-D. I am not a sculptor. I have never carved wood or stone or even plaster, for that matter. I am a painter.
Why do I get myself into these things???? There are times that I might be wise to abandon my motto, "Life is and adventure!"
Four days from now, I will be carving a block of ice at a very public event, outside of my studio, Art Adventures Studios, in the freezing cold, trying to make sure that my fingers do not succumb to power tools, and trying to avoid making a complete fool of myself. To prepare, I am doing a lot of research through Google and You Tube, to see how the pros do it. I am picking the brain of fellow artist and wood worker extraordinaire Kevin Anderson of Anderson Creative, who has gamely agreed to loan me some tools. I am hoping that I can do it without a chainsaw, the most common tool used by ice sculptors, because I have never used one of those before. We will see.
I have pulled off some incredible adventures before. If I can pull this one off, I guess there will be little that I cannot do. Stay tuned...

New Dog Art--Black Dog Portrait
There were many special things about my Christmas--playing "Balderdash" with my family; Christmas Eve Mass and dinner with friends; special gifts, etc. One very special thing was meeting the new dog in the family--Halpert! Halpert is my niece's dog whom she rescued from the streets of Huntington, WV. We suspect that this sweet fellow is a lab bull dog mix. I couldn't resist taking his photo and doing some artistry with it.
Welcome to the family, Halpert!

Cat Art? Dog Art? Pet Portraits? Murals? Contemporary Folk Art?
Exactly how would YOU describe my artwork?
Cat Art? Dog Art? Pet Portraits? Murals? Contemporary Folk Art? Any of these words would easily apply, I guess. And then, again, none of them could apply, just as easily.
You see, to be a visual artist, it is always a part of your nature to be both seeking and defying verbal description simultaneously. Artists seek to illuminate through a visual language that touches the soul beyond what a simple phrase could say; yet the artist is also perpetually looking for creative ways to speak about his or her vision. Such a paradox.
The paradox deepens when the artist is faced with the modern era of marketing artwork via blogs and websites and social media. Suddenly our verbose oratories have been shunned. We must now find a few "keywords" that will be noticed by search engines, and we must limit our posts to 140 or less characters in some venues!
OK, I confess, I put those words in my title and again in the text copy to satisfy the keyword thing. As far as I am concerned, however, you can call my stuff whatever you want to call it.
I love to paint. I love color and texture and interesting visual effects. I love dogs and cats and I love painting the critters. It's a lot of fun! but if you ask me my passion, well, truly, it is the more expressive work that enriches my soul and feeds my artistic spirit.
My expressive work usually comes in the form of collage. For some reason, I feel more free to dig into my own person with collage, expressing something about personal thoughts, feelings or beliefs by assembling random objects and phrases onto some sort of background. Although I struggle as I am creating them to find some way to bring order to the randomness, it always sorta surprises me when a theme or core structure begins to take shape. I don't make them with the intention of selling them, necessarily, so it tends to surprise me when others even take interest in them.

I open up my studio on First Fridays and other days that I am there during the day so that people can come in and chat or buy things. Usually it is the animal art that people want to buy, but it is the collage that moves them. I like that. My art professors from college would cringe if they knew how much I was enjoying the more slick and commercial aspects of some of my work. Never they fear, though. I am always just a paintbrush away from digging into the depths of my creative soul.
So, please, do follow me on Twitter and MySpace and even Facebook! I also have a CafePress shop and I am exploring Etsy and other commercial venues. Please check out my website as well. This is all part of the world of finding ways to survive as an artist, and, truthfully, there is a lot of creative potential in cyberspace. Plus, it gives YOU an opportunity to make a favorite image into a favorite shirt or mug!
I hope, someday, though, that you get a chance to look at one of my more introspective pieces, too, and that you take the time to share your thoughts. Those are the keywords that mean the most to me.
It is all part of the adventure.

Harvey: The Painting of a Dog
I have known the people of my new canine friend Harvey for a year or two since they bought one of my artworks at a benefit auction. I only recently met Harvey, but we got acquainted very quickly. What a fun and sweet fellow he is! His person brought him over to see me for a "sitting" (the term is used loosely) so that I could paint his portrait. I thought I would share the process of painting his portrait from start to finish.
The first step was to get to know Harvey and to take some photos. As much as I love painting, I must say, this was the most fun step in the process!
Next, I drew a line drawing on a canvas with a red oil pastel crayon, and then I painted over it and the entire background with a dark blue color (photo is enhanced a bit so that the drawing is visible). I always start my paintings with a dark background, because this gives me a unique color effect as the painting develops. I used a red crayon for the line drawing, because red contrasts with the blue, and it gives me a darker, bolder line.
Next, I started filling in shapes with a layer of color.
I tend to have several layers of color in my paintings by the time they are finished. I start with certain colors for the base layers, generally darker and highly contrasting colors, and then add colors on top of existing layers.
Essences of previous layers are evident, although in subtle ways. This adds texture, rich color effects, and character to the lines and shapes.
Many times when I am in the early stages of creating a painting, I feel somewhat fearful that I am going to fail at my lofty aspirations for making a masterpiece...Other times, I completely surprise myself with the way that a painting just sorta paints itself. The latter was the case with "Harvey". I kept going, "Wow! I really think I've got him!"
Invariably, though, regardless of my early confidence, I reach a stage where I think, "Ah, Geez. something just isn't right. That's not what I wanted at all."
I reached that stage here with Harvey.
Although I was liking the way the color was developing, and I liked the overall structure and design, something wasn't right. I stepped away from it for awhile, then came back with fresh eyes. The outlines were too wavy and too strong...The rectangle shape needed some interest...The eyes were all wrong...The color needed to come more alive...
I looked around at some of my other paintings to get ideas. I added interest to the background, turning the rectangle into a window scene, and changing the color interactions. I "roughened up" the line edges by blocking in color around them and making them less uniform. And I added more layers of color to give a rich and solid color "feel" to the whole painting. Eventually it all came together.
Harvey was done!
My paintings are usually whimsical and abstracted portraits of my subjects. Although I stray from realism, I do like to "know" the animals that I paint, so that I can be true to their character, if not to the realistic details of their image. My colors tend to be derivatives of, yet not exact replicas of, the "real" color of the subject. I believe that adds a sense of fun and imagination, allowing us to see new potential in a beloved creature!
Although Harvey's person has not seen the finished product as of this writing, she has seen a photo of the painting, and she seems very happy with the end product. I understand that this is her Christmas present, which makes the process even more special for all of us.
To Harvey, and his people, I wish you a Merry Christmas! Thank you for allowing me to be a part of this special gift!

Much has been made over the past year about the “arts explosion” in Stark County, and rightfully so. Despite the bleak economic forecasts that seem to dominate headlines on a daily basis, one of the bright spots in our community has been the amazing surge of enthusiasm for the arts.
The arts have always been an integral part of Stark County’s heritage, and the amount of talent in the community is not new. What is new is the priority that has been placed on the role of the arts in overall community development.
It has not been by accident.
Numerous studies in recent years have shown that cities with dynamic arts programs are successful on many fronts. Local leaders have wisely taken note of this, and they have capitalized on of one of our most unique resources to stimulate regional economic growth.
Research shows that arts-rich cities have thriving entertainment districts, and they tend to become destination points for tourism and regional commerce. Businesses are more likely to locate in areas that have points of interest built around the arts. These cities are more likely to attract and keep young professionals and college graduates. Community arts activities tend to redirect the energies of troubled youth into productive activities, creating hope for struggling neighborhoods.
The emphasis on the arts in Stark County is, indeed, bringing about many of these benefits to our community.
Arts In Stark grants have funded public art projects, neighborhood revitalization programs, partnerships between businesses and artists, educational programs, etc. Chambers of Commerce have actively supported arts activities, bringing new interest to downtown areas. Cities have become attractive places to visit, and companies enjoy entertaining visiting clients with a rich selection of arts events.
The arts alone cannot bring about economic recovery, but they certainly do help to enhance and promote other essential development activities. Conversely, other worthwhile programs could fail without including the arts as part of development plans.
The Ohio Arts and Crafts Guild relocated to Canton from Lexington, Ohio, in 2007, in large part due to the strong emphasis on the arts in the area.
Representing more than 400 artists and crafts persons across the state and in other states, OACG is a statewide nonprofit organization that has been in existence since 1963. We moved to the downtown Canton arts district because we saw opportunities for member artists and crafts persons, and we saw an opportunity for our organization to be a part of a new movement in the arts in general.
We have not been disappointed. Many of our members have been amazed by what they see happening in Canton, and they look to us as a model for what can happen in other regions.
For this movement to succeed, however, it needs support from the community. Financial giving to nonprofit arts organizations is one valuable method of providing support.
Another way to support the arts is to patronize local art galleries as you do your holiday shopping. Unique art and craft items, tickets to local performances and gift certificates for restaurants featuring local musical talent all make special gifts, and they regenerate excitement in the local economy.
The Canton Special Improvement District and ArtsInStark have planned “Shop Hops” in the downtown arts district on the first three Fridays in December from 6 to 10 p.m., including First Friday, to invite shoppers to enjoy a truly entertaining shopping experience for the holidays.
The OACG and other downtown galleries and studios invite you to come visit us during the holiday season, and we encourage you to continue supporting your community through the arts.
Vicki Boatright is executive director of the Ohio Arts and Crafts Guild. She lives in Canton.
