A Letter From President Bunker

June 25, 2018

Dear England MTC Missionary,

It has been 18 months since our arrival to this beautiful campus where the Preston Temple and the Missionary Training Centre is located.  The Sister Missionaries from that first group that were here when we arrived will be going home, some tomorrow, and others in a few weeks.  Of course, due to other reasons there have been missionaries that have needed to return home prior to their expected length of service being completed, but I wanted to take this occasion and share a brief note of love and gratitude for each of you that has walked through the doors of the MTC during the last 18 months.

Our life has been so richly blessed by serving with each of you, the Lord’s servants.  You are His true messengers and you not only bring the world His truth, but you also bring joy and real happiness to those who will accept you and receive you.  Serving a mission, for me, was not the “best two years” but far and away it was the “greatest two years”.  Mission life can be hard; it can be full of struggles and disappointments.  But it is also the place where the greatest of joys can be experienced, and for many those joys are indescribable!  I suppose it is like Alma rejoicing “exceedingly” to be reunited with the sons of Mosiah and finding out that they were “…still his brethren in the Lord… they had waxed strong in the knowledge of the truth…they were of a sound understanding…they had searched the scriptures diligently…they had given themselves to much prayer and fasting…and they taught with power and authority of God.” Alma 17:2-3

Some of you may remember viewing the Elder Bednar MTC Devotional entitled “The Character of Christ”.  Among many great insights and teachings in that devotional message, Elder Bednar defined character as “moral qualities, strongly developed, strikingly displayed, and consistently lived”.  He recounted Elder Neil A. Maxwell saying that “there would be no atoning sacrifice without the character of Christ”; or in other words the only way that the Savior could have completed the atonement was due to His personal character.  Yes, He was the literal Son of God in the flesh and with that came power over death, but He was still subject to temptation, disappointment, sorrow, evil, and His personal character was always being tested.  He was perfect in every way; He never succumbed to the natural man like you and I do; He was always selfless and concerned with others even during His greatest trials and sorrows.
Elder Bednar invited us to begin to refine our own character and to bring it more in line with what the Savior would want for us to be.  A mission is the perfect place to develop, display, and live with conviction strong moral qualities not only for 18 or 24 months, but also for the rest of our life.  I know that each of you has begun that mighty change of heart; I know that the Lord loves you and is well pleased with you.  I know He rejoices with your highs and comforts you in your lows; I know He has been with you every step of this mission journey even if at times you have wondered where He is.

Recently, my 40-year mission reunion was held and while I could not attend in person, my heart was with and will always be with my fellow missionary brothers and sisters all the days of my life.  It feels like it was just yesterday that I was a 21-year-old missionary returning home to Las Vegas, Nevada and wondering how the rest of my life would turn out.  I didn’t have money, I didn’t have a girlfriend, I had lost 30 pounds during my mission, my mother had cancer, I had no friends, but I could not have been happier!  I didn’t know what would happen in my post-mission life, and to be sure there were many days of struggle, but my promise to you is that the Lord is in the detail of your life and that He will provide every needful blessing, answer, and peaceful reassurance all your days.

Remember, in this life suffering is mandatory but misery is optional!  Strive to always have an eternal perspective and vision; never fear what your current difficulties are, or the ones that lie ahead in the future.  President Howard W. Hunter said, “If our lives and our faith are centered on Jesus Christ and His restored gospel, nothing can ever go permanently wrong.  On the other hand, if our lives are not centered on the Savior and His teachings, no other success can ever be permanently right”.

It has been said that greatness has more to do with the depths that one has risen from than the heights that one achieves.  We should never get caught up in the comparison game.  We are all imperfect and we all have weakness; yet each of us is a daughter and son of a perfect Heavenly Father, the same Heavenly Father!  One of the great blessings of this small MTC is to welcome missionaries from all over the world, and because of our size you can become intimately familiar with one another.  You learned that we are one family of believers, brought together from the four corners of the globe.  You learned that country, race, or culture did not make us different but rather it bound us together in love and faith.  It was not a coincidence that you met one another.  Remember how far you have risen from your first day here; you each are a treasure and so beloved of Heavenly Parents!

As an accommodation to the Spain MTC closing, our service will end sometime in November of this year as that MTC President is transferred here to replace us a little earlier than January 1st.  So as our days are numbered, we wanted to send this note along and express our love, admiration, and devotion to you.

Our love, relationship, and feelings for you didn’t end when you left the MTC to begin your missionary labor in the field, and it certainly won’t end when our service is finished here.  Each of you has made an important imprint on our heart.  We have learned from each of you; we have your pictures; we read your emails; we pray for you and remember your names on the temple prayer roll.  The only things we take with us from this life are the relationships we have formed and our personal character. We treasure our relationship with each of you.

We thank you for your love and kindness and for sharing a few weeks with us in the MTC.  We will never forget you and hope that our paths will cross and that we will always stay connected, and if we are lucky we might just get an invitation to your weddings!  Until then, carry on; no toil nor labor fear…all is well, all is well!

Our eternal love,

Jon and Susan Bunker

Visitors from the Missionary Department

This week we were visited by the Managing Director of the International MTC's, Kelly Mills and his number two man, Lane Steinagel. They gave us perfect scores on everything we do here at the England Missionary Training Centre. hahahaha We enjoyed a nice dinner at the Red Cat (our favorite restaurant) before they left ,with some members of our staff.

So, this is happening again...

All of the water fowls in England have laid eggs, and kept them warm until they hatched. Now, in the canal there are mommas and daddies and babies all over.

Here at the MTC, our momma goose has been laying on her fake eggs, in her nest for a good two months. When she made her nest, the ground was bare. Now the weeds have grown in all around her, and I can barely see her head. As I went outside to document it, the daddy goose came swimming over to protect his lady and babies from me. It is pretty disturbing to those of us that live here. We don't tell the missionaries what is going on, they would be crushed. I am not sure about this method of animal population control. I hope she gives up soon and moves on with her life. It breaks my mother heart.

These are some photos I have taken this week while running. These white flowers are in bloom all over the place! We have had sunny days, and everyone is feeling good. A little sunshine makes everyone feel better.

MTC Devotional

Tonight for our devotional we listened to Elder Rasband who spoke to the Provo MTC in person, just the night before. I felt inspired by his teachings to us. He was quoting our Prophet, Russell M. Nelson from April General Conference. He invited the missionaries to review President Nelson's most recent messages, particularly those that included invitations.

Elder Rasband talked of the signs of the last days. That there will be calamities in the world. Mens hearts will fail them. There will be many difficult things to happen in the days to come. Then he shared this statement from the Prophet...

"Our Savior and Redeemer, Jesus Christ, will perform some of His mightiest works between now and when He comes again."

These are our days! I love living in these days. I will share the entire quote...

"I am optimistic about the future. It will be filled with opportunities for each of us to progress, contribute, and take the gospel to every corner of the earth. But I am also not naive about the days ahead. We live in a world that is complex and increasingly contentious...Our Savior and Redeemer, Jesus Christ, will perform some of His mightiest works between now and when He comes again. We will see miraculous indications that God the Father and His Son, Jesus Christ, preside over this Church in majesty and glory. But in the coming days, it will not be possible to survive spiritually without the guiding, directing, comforting, and constant influence of the Holy Ghost." - President Nelson "Revelation for the Church, Revelation for Our Lives"

I am so grateful for a living Prophet.

A Couple of My Favorites...

These two Sisters are from Italy. Sister Battezzato is going to Temple Square and Sister Ranieri is going to Washington DC North. Sister Ranieri will work at the temple visitor center as well as proselyte. They were with us in the MTC for ten weeks learning English. They were amazing. They have positive attitudes, "I can do this" feelings, and everyday they were working hard to understand and communicate. By the time they left, they were going out with the Sisters serving in Chorley, contacting people and teaching. They returned to Italy to go to the consulate so they could get their Visa. They are headed to America today. I am so excited for them! We love them. I don't ever want to forget them.

MTC Group 16 May 2018

Numbers are still down at the MTC. We have twelve going to Manchester, three going to Leeds, three going to Scotland/Ireland, one going to Zimbabwe, one going to Berlin, two going to Alpine German Speaking and a senior couple going to the Adriatic South Mission. Sister Aifokiru (front row, second from the right) is the first missionary I have met from Ethiopia. She is a sweetheart.

A Visit From Sister Wu

Sister Wu and her companion brought some recent converts to the temple and stopped by to show them the MTC. It was so fun to see her again. Her English is so good! She is teaching a lot of Chinese speaking people in Leeds.

Happy Mother's Day!

I got these beautiful flowers today from two of my all time favorite sisters. They are serving in Birmingham. Sister Iuhimciuc from Moldova and Sister Katelin Johnson. They were beautiful and cheery on my desk for two weeks. I am so blessed!

New Photos On The MTC Walls!

The MTC wall pictures have had a makeover. I love all of the new canvas photos and the missionaries that are in them. Especially the top right photo of the Bolivia La Paz Mission where President Bunker is with his fellow Aymara Missionaries in front of his house. #hearteyes Also, the bottom middle picture of Elder Bunker and Elder Bowman. The walls look GREAT!

What crop is this BDS?

Today I took an hour off to go to Manchester to visit my favorite store in England, Cath Kidston. As I was driving on the M61, this huge field full of yellow flowers caught my eye. So on my way home, I got off the exit and turned around so I could get a picture of the field. I always wonder what people think when they drive past me, stopped on the side of the motorway, taking a picture. I don't really care as long as I don't get a ticket. :) It was an amazing view!

Running with the Missionaries

One of my least favorite things to do is run with the young sisters. I am slow and steady and I don't like the pressure. Plus, they exercise in the afternoon and I like to go in the morning. Sister Loader couldn't find anyone that would run with her consistently. I really felt like I needed to give her the opportunity to get out and run, so we became partners. She would run ahead of me and then come back, she was a sweetheart. I hope she gets companions that will go out with her. I understand the mental/coping strength she feels when she can get out and run. :)

Saying Goodbye to Thomas Davies

Tonight we had to say goodbye to the BEST MTC Assistant of all time. Tom has special organizational skills, he works hard, and late if he needs to to get his work done. He has had his hands in almost every aspect of the MTC and has helped it be more efficient and precise. You can only imagine how much Jonathon Wayne has loved his presence. It has felt like a big happy working family!
Mike and Bronwyn Miller, Tom and Rosa Linda Davies (almost) and Chris and Rachel Pattenden.

MTC Group 25 April 2018

In this group we have missionaries from the Netherlands, Romania, New Zealand, Switzerland, Taiwan, Denmark, India, Austria, Mexico, France and the Dominican Republic. Nineteen missionaries in total and only four from America. Our Senior Couple, the Hamon's (from New Zealand) are headed to the Czech/Slovak Mission. They have been learning Czech in preparation. Elder Hamon had some heart problems upon arriving and ended up in the hospital in Preston for almost a week. They stayed with us two weeks instead of one. We love them.

One of my favorite things about this mission, is living so close to the temple and being on the temple grounds daily. The flowers are always well tended and beautiful. These tulips were amazing!

Mission President Seminar

We had a really nice Mission President Seminar in Frankfurt, Germany. The Area Presidency always have a small gift for us in our hotel room. They gave us a nutcracker/smoker thing and these flowers. It is usually something very traditional from the area where the meeting is held. The flowers were beautiful! This is the only photo I took the whole time.

I always love the training our Area Presidency gives to us. Elder Johnson opens the scriptures up for me, as he compares them to the things we are going through, and applies them to me personally.

Elder Sabin says a lot in a very small amount of time by quoting others usually. These were a few that I wrote down:

*"The best days are ahead." - President Eyring
*He compared Helaman to a Mission President and the stripling warriors to the missionaries.
*Keep it simple.
*The Church has never been stronger and more faithful.
*Ministering- bringing people home. One by one.
*He spoke of Dave Wottle, 1972 Olympic middle distance runner in Munich. Keep running. How do we finish the race? D&C 21:4-7 1-follow the prophet 2-patience and faith

Elder DeFeo spoke a lot about ministering. How to help our missionaries become ministers.

It was very nice to rub shoulders with some of the couples that we have met and grown to love. Sister Pickerd, serving in Italy Rome, was diagnosed with breast cancer last year, right after this MP Seminar. We have been in contact with them over the past year trying to give our support and strength as she has fought her cancer while staying in the mission field. This is the first time we have seen her. It was quite an emotional meeting for me. She has been through a lot. I hope her road gets a little easier this next year.

IRELAND - April 18-23

Jon and I had an absolutely fabulous trip to Ireland. The MTC was having some work done inside, so we didn't have any missionaries from April 17-25. We decided to have an adventure in Ireland! We flew into Dublin and drove to Kilkenny Castle and then spent the night in the town of Limerick.

On Thursday we woke up and went to visit Blarney Castle. We kissed the Blarney stone (biggest waste of money ever) and then drove south to Cork and Cobh (pronounced Cove). We took a city tour at Cork and visited the cathedral and Titanic Museum at Cobh. It was a lovely day. We drove through some beautiful country. We returned to Limerick and spent the night.

Friday morning we got up early and headed to the Cliffs of Moher. They are absolutely gorgeous. If I had to pick, they were my favorite thing about Ireland. The whole country was beautiful and the people were friendly and funny. Jon and I both fell in love with it there. After the Cliffs of Moher, we drove to Dunguaire Castle, had a great lunch in Kinvarra, and then drove to Ashford Castle. This was another beautiful drive on small country roads. We saw many a green pasture without any animals feeding on them.

The Ashford Castle property is really lovely! Today we took a two hour boat tour/ride on Lough Corrib (Lake/Louch Corrib) that was glorious with sun included. We met a really fun couple from New Orleans. Afterwards, Jon played some golf, I read my book in the sunshine (what a luxury!), and then we went for a bike ride. After dinner we walked and walked. This was a perfect day!

Our last full day of being a tourist was spent going to North Ireland, seeing Dunluce Castle, The Giant's Causeway, Carrick-O-Rede Rope Bridge, seeing a beautiful rainbow and staying the night in Ballycastle. This was another great day!

Monday, we drove to Belfast, returned our car, and flew back to Manchester. Tomorrow we leave for Frankfurt for our Mission President's Seminar. It has been a traveling month for me. Time to get back to the missionary life.
