Only yesterday, according to Willie Nelson's Web site, the Library of Congress added to its National Recording Registry one of the greatest albums ever recorded 'round these parts: Nelson's Red Headed Stranger, cut at Autumn Sound Studios in Garland in February '75. You'll hear plenty of that record, my favorite amongst Nelson's myriad keepers, on this work-week adios -- two-plus-hours of FM-broadcast quality Shotgun Willie in the KAFM studios back on July 1, 1976, shortly before that infamous Fourth of July Picnic in Gonzales.

KAFM, which sat at 92.5 on the FM dial, was country for but a brief moment in the mid-1970s; says here, matter of fact, it hopped off The Outlaw bandwagon not long after this show was broadcast and went AOR, closer to its underground-rock roots. But it gave Willie just enough time to squeeze in this 46-greatest-hits-and-some-that-would-be marathon (and "Okie From Muskogee," "Up Against The Wall Redneck Mother," "Will the Circle Be Unbroken" and so on) featuring such guests as David Allen Coe and local Longhorn Ballroom legend Dewey Groom.    http://fp.io/26fdf245/

WILLIE NELSON - HEROES

Willie Nelson – Heroes (2012)

Returning to the Columbia/Sony family after nearly two decades away, Willie Nelson once again tries to be everything to everybody on 2012's Heroes, an appealingly misshapen collection of classics, contemporaries, and originals. Heroes — its title signifying no great concept — is roughly divided into quarters, with part of the album devoted to the Western swing and Texas country he’s always loved to sing, part consisting of new songs from Willie, part originals from his son Lukas, and part covers of newer, rock-oriented tunes from the likes of Tom Waits, Eddie Vedder, and Chris Martin. Each of these categories is a bit hit-or-miss, either succumbing to cutesy novelty (the dope-smoking anthem “Roll Me Up and Smoke Me When I Die,” complete with country cadences from a…
…non-rapping Snoop Dogg) or laziness, and there’s a wee bit too much Lukas Nelson scattered throughout the record, with the son of the father singing on no less than nine of the album’s 14 songs. This can be too much of a strong spice, obscuring the overall flavor of the music, but Lukas contributes a couple of the record’s best songs in “Every Time He Drinks He Thinks of Her” and “The Sound of Your Memory,” songs that fit well next to a quite beautiful version of Vedder’s “Just Breathe” and yet another strong, swinging rendition of “My Window Faces the South.” And so Heroes kind of winds up summarizing all that’s good and bad about Willie as he approaches his 80th birthday: he’s open to everything but has no innate editor, so he whiffs as often as he connects, but when he does connect, it’s a wonder to behold…and somehow he can still surprise whenever he sings those old songs.

WILLIE NELSON - The Complete Atlantic Sessions [3 CD, 2006]

Willie Nelson - The Complete Atlantic Sessions [3 CD, 2006]

Just before becoming a paragon of "outlaw country" with the release of 1975's iconic RED-HEADED STRANGER on Columbia Records, Willie Nelson spent a brief and largely overlooked time at Atlantic, releasing only two albums. However, longtime fans now consider 1973's rock-&-roll-influenced SHOTGUN WILLIE and 1974's autobiographical concept album, PHASES AND STAGES, to be two of the Texas singer-songwriter's finest albums. THE COMPLETE ATLANTIC SESSIONS is an outstanding overview of Nelson's time with Atlantic, presenting both albums in full along with a complete 1974 show recorded at Austin's Texas Opry House for a planned live album that was scrapped when Nelson changed labels. Along with remastered sound and extensive liner notes, this three-disc set adds a total of 27 outtakes, demos, and alternate versions.

WILLIE NELSON – REMEMBER ME, VOL.1

WILLIE NELSON – REMEMBER ME, VOL.1 (2011)

December 1, 2011 by Zorn

In contrast to the deeper picks of last year’sCountry Music, this year’s model has Nelson working through some of the most famous tunes in country music’s chart history. Included are signature hits from Ernest Tubb (“Remember Me”), Tennessee Ernie Ford (“Sixteen Tons”), George Jones (“Why Baby Why”), Hank Snow (“I’m Movin’ On”), Porter Wagoner (“A Satisfied Mind”), and many others. Nelson teams with Nashville session players and producer James Stroud (the ‘J’ in the R&J record label) to record surprisingly straightforward and twangy covers of fourteen selections. The singularity of Nelson’s artistry allows these simple recitations to escape the shadows cast by the original hits; the instant identifiably of his voice is all that’s needed to make these songs his own. The result finds Nelson easily sharing the stage with both the songs and their famous originators, as if he were a cabaret singer taking a stroll through the great American songbook. It’s just that the songbook in question is mostly Nashville’s rather than Tin Pan Alley’s.

The song list selects heavily from the 1950s, but dips back into the mid-40s and forward to Vern Gosdin’s 1989 hit “That Just About Does It.” The one pick from outside the country charts is Rosemary Clooney’s 1954 pop chart-topper “This Old House.” Nelson and Stroud set the latter into the song list with a light swing arrangement that’s half way between Clooney’s original and Shakin’ Stevens’ 1981 rockabilly cover. The swinging continues with Tex Williams’ “Smoke! Smoke! Smoke! (That Cigarette)” and Bob Wills’ “Roly Poly,” providing balance to ballads that include a wonderfully idiosyncratic take on Ray Price’s “Release Me.” It’s a mark of Nelson’s stature and impact on country music that his unique styling provides inspiration, rather than a challenge, for the assembled pickers. This is a fine, easy-going collection of covers, as much about Nelson as it is about the hits. The sessions turned out enough finished works for a second volume, which is expected next year.
