an inconvenient but lovely surprise

This morning we found a nest with 4 tiny, spotted eggs in it... tucked deep within my hanging pot!! I asked Eric to fetch it down from where it has been hanging on the front porch. I needed to water it (poor thing was wilting from my neglect) and I had been wanting to move it to the back where we could enjoy it more. So anyway, he gets it down and, lo and behold, we have a sweet little surprise waiting! Now I don't want to move it to the backyard in case the mama bird won't come back so I guess I'm stuck with leaving it in the front until our 4 little babies leave the nest! Gabe and I had a great time peering in on the eggs this morning after the watering and keeping tabs on the mama's whereabouts all morning. I was a little concerned because in addition to moving her home, I accidentally doused the nest while watering and it turns out to be as water-tight as a dish!! I was dismayed to see the eggs half covered in cold water that refused to drain but I knew if I did anything to get the water out, she would for sure not come back. Eric reminded me that rain has got to get in there sometimes and I'm sure we had unwittingly been drowning the poor things prior to our discovery every time we watered anyway...so his manly logic reassured me that I hadn't done anything lethal. :) Later I was relieved to see the mama bird back on the nest. I'm still wondering what happened to that standing water though...

family bike rides!

The whole family can now go on bike rides...we are so excited! For Father's Day we bought a bike trailer for the kids - Eric thought it was way cool. :) For FHE last night, we tried it out and it was a blast! We cruised the neighborhoods for about an hour with Gabe and Nyah snugged up nice and warm in the back. (It was a little chilly... no surprise.) It was so fun to see all the pretty houses and yards, chit chat together, and even get some exercise! I have a feeling this bike trailer is going to get a lot of use...
What do I have to do around here to get my boys to smile?!!! Despite how it looks, they had a great time!

3 months

Nyah is 3 months old already- I can hardly believe it! It's going way too fast. She is getting so big! Every day she gets more and more beautiful and her personality is just blossoming - so sweet and happy. Eric and I are totally in love, even Gabe thinks she is pretty neat! :) Here are a few minutes of live time with baby Nyah. She does a lot of cooing and smiling... nothing too exciting but adorable nonetheless! I know my family will want to see it but I don't expect it to entertain everyone! :) It is so hard having a baby away from family knowing that they are missing seeing her sweet smiles, chubby legs, soft cooes... just everything. And she is changing so fast. So I wanted to share a moment of her...

I have to add, in defense of the messy bed, that this was very early in the morning! I had just finished nursing her in bed and grabbed the camera to capture how happy she was!

My BRAVE little boy

Eric and I were relaxing downstairs at 9:30 tonight when we heard a little voice yell "daddy!!"... then a pause and a "mommy! mommy! mommy!" Eric and I ran upstairs to see what on earth was wrong. (Gabe went to bed hours ago and never calls to us or leaves his bedroom this late) Gabe was sitting up in bed amidst piles and piles of books (obviously not a lot of sleeping had been happening). He was very concerned about a noise he was hearing outside. It was the neighbor kids throwing those little firecrackers - the ones that pop when they hit the ground. When I explained it to him, he said over and over how he did NOT like them. We could literally feel the controlled fear emanating from him. Gabe has always been our little sensitive guy... definitely not a thrill seeker of even the toddler variety. (You know, like being thrown in the air super high!) :) Anyway, so we told him how the firecrackers are fun and not scary at all. We watched out the window for a bit and then tucked him back in bed saying that they would be over soon. About 10 minutes later, the neighbor kids starting throwing them again so I went upstairs to listen through his door out of curiosity to see how Gabe was dealing with it. Inside I could hear him saying: "They don't hurt ya! Firecrackers don't hurt. They don't hurt ya." Then a little later: "It'll stop in a minute. They'll stop in a minute." He continued in this way reassuring himself in the sweetest, most positive tone of voice. It made me get a lump in my throat at how brave and wonderful he is. It is so hard to see your children be afraid of anything... and it melts my heart to see how courageous Gabe is in fighting his fears. There are so many times when he does this - for example once when he saw a commercial for The Incredibles... now that show is obviously way too much for my little guy who upon seeing the "intense" commercial cautiously came off the couch during it to stand with a very worried look on his face! But we talked about how the hero was a good guy and really nice and from then on, if Gabe saw a commercial or picture of The Incredibles, I could hear him telling himself: "He's not bad, he's good! He's not scary." I love my brave little boy so much...

what a morning

When a hungry Nyah woke me up at 5:45am this morning, the sun was streaming through the blinds. The bright sun! I haven't seen the sun in days...weeks...months (ok, not really, but it feels like it!) The sunshine and the fact that I had almost 8 straight hours of sleep made getting up this early feel almost good for once! :) It was going to be a great day.

After a fun breakfast of pancakes and eggies, we were off to a good start.... then I went into Gabe's closet to get his clothes for the day and smelled the distinct, icky smell of urine. And I'm thinking oh please noooooooo! But oh yes, the carpet all over smells like pee. When I question Gabe he tells me cheerfully that he has been peeing in the (mesh) hamper. WHAT?!! And for how long?? Seriously what am I going to do with this kid?! I thought potty training was like a scary dream, over and done with. Obviously not. Sometimes I wonder what goes on in Gabe's head... I mean peeing in the hamper? Huh?! Things have been a little edgy with our little man lately - I think a delayed reaction to baby Nyah joining the household. Eric and I have been at our wits end trying to deal with an out of control Gabriel! But after reading "Children the Challenge" again, praying for patience, and giving lots of extra attention, I thought things were looking up. And I think they are but we're obviously not out of the woods yet. Wish me luck....

The wilds of Washington

Eric and Gabe have been hiking like crazy lately! Even though it doesn't feel like summer here yet, my boys are stir crazy and want to get out of the house! Nyah and I will occasionally join them on their mountain adventures and that's when we get some wonderful pictures. The green here is stunning. I can tell you each one of us LOVE it. For me, it's like stepping into an oasis with all that beauty and solace around you - so rejuvenating. Even Gabe has made comments about how much he likes to be in the mountains and he always gets excited to go hiking with Daddy!

pretty girl

Nyah's smiles could melt anyone's heart but even with her serious face, she is a heart-breaker! She has the most beautiful complexion... and such a pretty little face! :)
I had to add these pictures of Gabe... he is the exact same age in them as Nyah is now. Don't they look like little twins?! Nyah is reminding us so much of Gabe now!

a weekend with Grandma Cheryl and Caitlynn

The weekend Cheryl and Caitlynn came for Nyah's blessing, we had a lot of fun with them! Saturday was the first sunny day in weeks so we headed to Coulon Beach in the morning for some time in the sun! When we got there, the breeze off the water was surprisingly chilly but it did nothing to prevent Gabe from playing in the sand and water. Eric, who is normally impervious to the cold, was shivering away miserably while all across the beach kids were playing in the water and sand - some in just swim suits!! It's crazy how kids don't seem to feel the cold when they're having fun! Later in the day everyone (minus Nyah and I who were happily napping) headed downtown for shopping and sightseeing. We met up later for dinner... what a fun day!

Nyah's baby blessing

Sunday was a special day for all of us... Eric gave our sweet daughter a beautiful blessing. It was such a spiritual experience. When he brought her back to our bench in the congregation, Nyah just stared into his eyes, so solemn. For that moment she seemed to be a much older being... the veil seemed very thin and there was a connection between her and her daddy that was special to witness. The bishop told me afterward that Nyah watched Eric wide eyed, during the entire blessing, even though she had to crane her neck back to look at him! I'm so thankful to my Heavenly Father for my sweet baby and for a husband that honors his priesthood and loves the Lord. Lately my heart has been so full as I've thought about how blessed I am.Doesn't she look like an angel in her dress? It's raw silk with a band of lace across the bodice that is embroidered with tiny pearls... it's so beautiful. My grandma bought it for her. She looked so precious for her special day. Thanks Grandma for giving her such a beautiful dress... I'm sure it will become a family treasure! Cheryl and Caitlynn came for the baby blessing. It felt so good to have family with us during such a special time. We missed everyone else that couldn't come. Unfortunately I was running around like a maniac all morning and didn't get a picture of them with our little angel! I'll post other pictures of the weekend later though!

Gabe and Nyah

I get to spend each day with these two precious little people... what a life!
