Winter CSA: Week 10

Fortunately we snuck in this week's harvest before the super cold nights (Thursday night at the farm was zero degrees outside brrr! We'll have to wait and see if that affects next weeks harvest depending on where the temperatures go.)

Cilantro and hot peppers

Winter salad mix

Wild salad (mostly Claytonia)

Chard mix

Baby brassica mix (red russian kale, toscano (dinosaur) kale, Spighraeilo Liscia leaf brocolli, champion collards)

Big bag of Mustard Brassicas mix

Winter carrots! This variety and this time of season means this is the carrot with the most natural sugars in it you will ever taste. Literally.

There were a variety of squash to choose from today: blue hubbard (pictured), Jarrahdale, long island cheese, and more. This is the last week for squash. You'll be getting a steady supply of sweet potatoes the next handful of weeks.

Winter CSA: Week 9

Winter seems like it has arrived now. Hopefully we have what you need to fight the winter blahs. In this week's share:

A winter salad mix that includes some hardy lettuces

A wild mix (mostly claytonia)

Mix of arugula varietied

Brassica mustard mix which includes 3 varieties including green wave & red giant.

Komatsuna

The last of the hakurei type turnips for at least a while (carrots coming soon!)

Cilantro

Big blue hubbard or Long Island Cheese heirloom squash. The former is a little mealier, neither is particularly sweet but many are used in soups, stews, or pies. Can pre-bake for such uses by slicing in half or strips and baking in a pan (sometime with a little water in the pan).

Winter CSA: Week 8

Happy New Year! Believe or not there was a bit of cloudy and cold the last couple of weeks (reflected in a few cold singed items this week) but for the most part things are looking good down on the farm, although we are a bit confused by the above average temps of the last few days.

Wild Winter Mix featuring claytonia (miner's lettuce), chickweed, wrinkled cress, and some baby brassicas. (a mix including some lettuce is coming next week).

Big bag of arugulas. The variety on the left is new this week and is called Surrey.

Brassicas mix aka Kale and Collards. In a future post I will outline the 6 or so classic kale varieties I grow (all open pollinated, no F1 hybrids). There will be plenty more of this to come.

Hakurei type turnips (one more week of these coming next week)

Green and red pac chois an Tokyo Bekana. While a little winter damaged these will stir fry or soup up nicely regardless of whether you trim off the aesthetically unpleasing leaves or not.

Sweet potatoes (note, that we try to sort out any squishy ones but just wash and you are mostly ready to bake or peel. Any sides of sweet potatoes that appear white - for instance the side of a sweet potato that broke in half - are actually fine, sweet potatoes naturally seal themselves where "damaged" and I "cured" them properly. Simply cut off the white edge and you are good to go. Any blotches that are dark and/or squishy are not as fine though and that section can be cut out. We try to mix larger and smaller sweets together so you don't get all one size. Roast or bake small ones like you would carrots or fingerling potatoes. Lots more sweet potatoes in a couple more weeks.
