Winter CSA: Week 12

Brrrrrr. Bitter, bitter cold week. Not record lows since I've been hoophouse farming but enough to make me uneasy. We did harvest some fresh greens for today's share and thankfully we still have some storage and preserved goods grown when it was shall we say a bit warmer...

Winter salad mix

Baby spinach

Swiss chard

Red giant mustard greens

A few potatoes and onion

A taste of dried Marvel of Venice heirloom beans

And a package of frozen tomatoes (many of them heirloom). Note: Their skins and cores were removed before they were frozen.

The latter few items might make a nice stew or soup on any of these cold days.

Winter CSA: Week 11

Not only has it remained quite cloudy, but some of the nights have remained bitter cold with lows around 5 degrees F a few times at the farm this past week. I guess it isn't thing we don't expect for January but the greens would sure appreciate any reprieve the weather could see our way this coming week. We did eke out some fresh greens again this week of course but thank goodness for cold storage crops (no more squash but the biggest sweet potatoes remain for coming weeks).

Winter CSA: Week 10

Happy New Year! With the length of daylight a bit short yet, some bitter cold nights, along with lack of actual sunlight... it has been a bit stressful coming up with the most perfect looking greens. But we do have nutritious greens to start your new year off right. Plus a few cold storage items this week.

Winter salad mix

"presto" variety of cress. Has some serious watercress flavor and is the most popular cress type in Europe.

Baby collards

Mustard greens

Just about the last of Brines Farm potatoes out of cold storage, plus an onion or two.

Red Kuri (aka baby red Hubbard aka Orange Hokkaido), Jarrahdale (heirloom), and Long Island Cheese (heirloom, not pictured) squash/pumpkins grown this past summer at Brines Farm. All have been properly cold storage but should be used soon. All have moderately sweet flesh that could be used for purées, soups, or pies.
