I try not to laugh when people tell me, "You are so lucky to be a teacher. Summer vacation must be great." Ha, urban legend. If a teacher does not have another job during the school year, they almost certainly have one (or two or three) in the summer. Then, there are all the wonderful professional development opportunities to attend. If none of the above apply, we usually look forward to "mom" time: spending days with Lilly out in the garden, swinging and reading stories on the bench, napping...
Then the thought occurred to me: What about when she is sleeping? What do I do?
Realization: I would be bored after 1 week. I can only read my library so many times. Home projects are verboten. I've already organized/thrown out everything in excess in the house. Lilly is too young to come ice skating. TV is icky. Lilly is my summer job.
Solution: back to school for me!
Starting in June, the usual order in my life will be reversed. I will be with Lilly all day and in school at night. MA in Biology Education here I come! Great news, out of a 46 hour program, I was able to transfer 14 credits...so 3/10 the way complete.
I will be tired, but certainly not bored.
I will keep you posted...wish me luck on finishing fast.

Gimmie Gimmie!
Occasionally, there are subtle signs to let you know that your daughter wants something. A glance, a sigh, a longing look.

Then, there are the neon-bright,screaming red flag signs that are impossible to ignore.

A few weeks ago Lilly started to show some interest in what Brian and I were doing...so we decided to do what most parents do - indulge her.

Word of wisdom for new babies out there from Lilly: Water does not taste as good as you think it does.

Keeping Busy
Not alot of posting lately, sorry. We have been really busy. Some of that busy-ness has been with a couple of projects.
First, do you remember the white gravel path? Here is a picture to remind you:

We have struggled with the color, it just really did not fit. It tended to be rough to walk on, it was not a fine gravel, so we never used it. Additionally, it was so bright that you can see it from space.
(Note that the mimosa had not bloomed and there are high schoolers everywhere, but the sprinklers were running in the front yard, so this was taken in May of 2009.)
Anyway, early this spring Paige hauled all the rocks out of it, and dug it down. My good friend Jon hauled away the rocks, and after a couple of weeks and accidentally punching an edging spike through the PVC supply line for the front lawn, we have a whole new path.

We use it now frequently. It's much nicer, and even better now that there are not little fountains shooting up through the cracks of four of the blocks.
We have another project we are jsut finishing, but I'm going to post it later to make it look like I'm posting more often.
