The gloves have been hung up.

murder-final-bell-headline

Dear Friends,
After a long introspective time, I have decided that the best thing for me to do is to close the blog. I do not do so lightly.

I have come to consider many of you friends even though we have never met.

I wish to leave here making certain that you know that all of your kindnesses - comments, words of encouragements, sharing digital boots - (even giving me dozens of your orginal silvers (Mark), ad visits, and donations have all been extremely generous and very much appreciated.

Over the years you have let me share bits and pieces of my personal life (like the time that my wife had a surgery and complications) and my faith (still a follower of Jesus). I am grateful that you were not just a group of downloaders but you took time and contributed real sentiment and heartfelt wishes. You shared my moments of pain and happiness equally.

Why am I shutting it down?

The blog was originally a spin off of work that I was doing at guitars101.com where I posted to the rank of guru (highest level).

At that point in time guitars101 did not have a lossless section and there were always requests for such.

I decided to post on my own blog since my personal collection was greater than the combined posts of 101 (their forum now has a comparable assortment due to a large variety of people posting).

This blog began as a small hobby. A couple of posts every few days. I always have been a bit of an overachiever - due in part, I suppose, to inadequacies that I possess and that I try to compensate for.

The blog began a little following and soon a large one. I currently have 16,000+ "hits" a day and over 10 million total page views if you consider the previous 2 versions of the blog. According to more than one web analysis site I am in the top 3 in the world under the category of bootlegs.

The blog began a bit of a life of its own. More followers, more requests, more shares offered me, then donations (not often but every now and then over $100/mo). I was also making commissions based on my # of downloads with rapidshare (sometime $500/mo - program discontinued years ago) and megaupload ($500 every 6 month/ program AND site permanently discontinued). Then, of course were the ads by google which began to pay even larger commissions.

To make matters clearer: The hobby became a business that required a diligence that I never anticipated. It was still "sharing" and it was still very personal to me. And of course there were still financial incentives to keep it "worthwhile" - at least if I failed to factor in that I would get up an 1+1/2 hours early to work on my blog, spend any sleepless nights to work on my blog, my lunch breaks at work to work on my blog, etc. The posts of the last few days indicate roughly how I receive the posts and previous efforts show more plainly what I did with each post to clean them up and make them presentable to you.

When Google closed their ad program from my site it removed the last financial incentive other than the very rare donations that would come in. So I had to think to myself - is it worth the 50-100 hours that I spend a month on the blog for the returns that I receive? And I kept a promise that I would NEVER ASK for money.

Even though I never asked for money I began to feel a bit like a whore. I really started this thing as a mechanism to share my collection and then it became a mechanism to receive.

My hypocrisy was becoming evident to me. There remained a tension within me that said - you are doing this for the wrong reasons, it is becoming your master, this is not what you "preach" - you are posting things here for requests that you are philosophically opposed to,... You get the idea.

When I also factored in that there are many other fine sites that also offer boots it seemed that my choice was clear. Time to call it quits.

thx for bearing with my rambling.

I love you all,
Dave

PS I will post links on right column of my blog to other direct download blogs so that you and others will have good resources to access good boots in the future.

Some had asked if there will be a "reunion tour" of my blog.
The best answer is only when Sonny and Cher start touring again (or a more contemporary answer: when Guns N Roses do ;)

I will hover invisibly in the background to read comments from time to time so keep posting them please.

I will be selling 4 hard drives (2-3TB each) so that the boots will live on in somebody's home.

Hopefully they will be (or become) bloggers themselves.

Today I posted the ebay link to my second drive then 1 week later the next...

I had a few more uploaded that I forgot about but these WILL be the last.

It made no sense not posting them. All links are +/- 200MB files

notes:
even if my copy comes from an 'original' Highland CD thare's some static on CD2 ... this imperfection appears in almost all copies in circulation.

notes from the pf-roio db:

A few brief cuts during songs, some applause cut between songs. A few tape faults such as interference and speed changes. One annyoing speed change at the end of "A Saucerful Of Secrets." -LEMON

Many good tapes resulted from this tour, and many solid performances. For sound quality, this one scores a little short of 11/16/71, but noticeably better than 11/20/71. There are a couple of tape glitches, and AHM fades prematurely during Rick's jam. Overall though, it stands up well to multiple listens.
The performance is excellent, though not particularly unusual. The introduction is a few sentences in French, except for the concluding quip, "I hope everybody is stoned." Roger also says a few words in French before OoTD. The encore of ASoS could be a bit more far out than usual.
This is one of the minority Highland items that isn't just a dupe of something already out there. -EL

This recording was diginally remastered with good equipment. Like they ever needed to remaster it in the first place.

***Neonknight's Notes***
Littlepieces and I have been taking a close look at a couple of tapes and this offering is from the first one given to me by a collector last year. Both tapes run slow and have a low frequency hum as all other sources do. A likely 1st gen that we have heard a sample from has the same issues. The second tape that we plan to work on in the coming months is a low gen version that will probably be slightly better than this 5th gen cassette but each has its merits, so we plan to upload both. Listen out in particular for a really nice version of The Embryo in this 5th gen.

***Littlepieces' Mastering Notes***
I really like this recording and around 4m into the first track, FOS, it really begins to grab you.
this is a mono recording that was dubbed as two channel stereo as is often the case. Due to the previous transfers with less than perfect head alignment, the recording has a phase shift that varies from 18-20 samples. Generally, its left channel's output is a little higher and also has a bit more high end so in this case the right channel was removed which eliminated the phasing issues and the level differences between the channels.
The speed of this recording was very slow and by transferring it at 88.2kHz and then changing the sample rate to 96kHz, we were able to avoid a resample and achieve a speed that is close to correct.
This recording was marked as Dolby encoded but it was transferred without Dolby. Transferring a Dolby encoded recording without decoding the Dolby on playback is done often when playing the tape back on a different deck than that which it was encoded. The differences in decks often results in the decoding profile varying from the original encoding creating a poor result. Since this recording did not have its Dolby decoded, portions of its high frequencies were left boosted from the original transfer. No effort was made to formulate a compensating EQ since any setting would be subjective. That being said, I did incorporate a modest noise reduction setting working almost entirely above 10kHz to reduce the Dolby boosted effect in the extended upper end where a lot of the hiss resides.
I selectively reduced two low frequency hums at ~50Hz and ~160Hz that were prominent at various times. There are a few very minor drop downs or tape pauses or damage that I chose to leave untouched. There are a number of times where it seems that the taper is either adjusting his levels or perhaps the tape recorder is utilizing auto leveling.
There seems to be good evidence that the track order on the tape is incorrect. All the shows from 10-23 thru 11-29 had AHM as the last track of the 1st set and GitC after Embryo followed by CWTAE. After AHM, you can hear a band member say, 'thank you see you soon', seemingly ending the first set as all the other shows from 10-23 to 11-29. Also, you can hear a cut/splice at the end of FOS during the applause before GitC and GitC cuts just before CWTAE would have begun. I think its likely that from this cut/splice to the cut at the end of GitC should be moved to after Embryo as part of the second set which would be consistent with the other shows from this period.
It seems possible that there may be a another inside cut/splice just before the door slams during the footstep sequence of Cymbaline at 7:14m. Also, an obvious inside cut occurs at 4:47m of AHM. When evaluating the correct track order, it may be relevant to consider 20m or 30m reels and how that would translate to cassette copies.

In a futile effort to boost my despicable ratio, I thought I would track and seed the nice-sounding show shared here by snsik that was untracked consisting of two large flac files.
Unfortunately, Trader's Little Helper identified these files as being lossy, so...I dropped a wav into iZotope's spectral view and found the ATRAC "lego parapets" typical of mini-disk recordings. (see pic) I'm not sure if the CD recorder in the previously listed lineage is capable of this type of compression so I'm guessing that there's probably a mini-disk somewhere in the lineage.
Identify recording methods from LosslessBob:
http://jokerman.org.uk/lb/LosslessBob-what-images.html
The updated lineage with tracking might be something like:
AUD > cass[low] > mini-disk > CD recorder > cda[0] > SC > ? > flac > wav > Audacity (split tracks) > TLH (SBE's) > FLAC8
Other than tracking, I added a couple of brief fade-ins for the first track of each CD as well as a fade-out for the last track on CD 01. I also removed 3 seconds of silence at the beginning of the first track on CD 02 "Hey You".

The Man & The Journey (with edits)

Total running time 60 mins 55 secs

A raw, high resolution transfer of Kbrubaker's copy of the 1969 Hilversum 3 broadcast of this well known concert.

The recording was acquired by Kbrubaker in 1977 and appears to be from the usual taping that did the rounds before the VPRO 1997/1998 re-broadcast. I worked on this transfer as I found Kbrubaker's cassette to be notably better than other copies of the original off air-recording that I have heard (including one from a reel to reel that was said to be very low gen).

Those new to this concert should first seek out Harvested's superb quality copy of the pre-air recording. I'm offering this original broadcast for those who like to hear the DJ and feel nostalgic about the version collectors used to listen to, as I do.

As this will be just an occasional listen I chose to not split the music up into individual songs, preferring instead to leave it as single large file that can be easily altered or downsampled.

Adjustments to balance the channels were made in the analogue domain using the FSP14 and I kept the settings the same for both sides of Kbrubaker's tape.

D107 - DJ Chatter - but with silverfish underneath.

I recorded this at home in London. It was live to air. The BBC decided to do a series of live to air shows direct from London's Marquee Club. Each band had about 20 mins.

I know very little about this band except is sounds very much like stonerrock to me. Very Heavy with a female vocalist.

Vocals: Lesley Rankine
guitar: Andrew "Fuzz" Duprey
bass: Chris P Mowforth
drumms: Stuart Watson.

Equipment: ?
Lineage: Fm > Cassette (0) > Adobe Audition 2012 > xACt Flacs > Torrent > You.

Led Zeppelin -

Mega-rare restored vinyl "Circa.1975" - Braves Stadium, Atlanta GA 1973-05-04 Soundboard soundcheck in stunning quality - Rockabilly and Chuck Berry jams! - mp3 sample included GET THIS GREAT SET

First of all, it's possible you may have this material already. It's been misatrributed to Minneaplis 1975-01-18 for a long time. More of this set than is on this vinyl bootleg has already seen the light of day... BUT you may not have it in this quality (amazing!). If you don't have it, this is a must-get any way as the material and performance is first-rate.

Here's a direct quote from the Zeppelin database (found at http://www.argenteumastrum.com/1973.htm):

MAY 00 - UNKNOWN LOCATION (THURSDAY)
Very possibly that this soundcheck could took place on May 4, 1973 at the Braves Stadium, Atlanta, Georgia. There was a debate judging from which period this soundcheck might be. Often attirbuted to the Minneapolis January 18, 1975, the date was discredited as well as speculated Los Angeles June 25, 1975 afternoon soundcheck. Robert Plant's voice sounds quite damaged and dry, and so on, it matches almost perfectly with first leg of 1973 North American Tour period, where his voice wasn't yet fully recovered.

This is such a nice set that it bears listening to over and over again. I have this album in current rotation myself, it's that good.

Tracks have been generally split along major lines:

Custard Pie (NOT the released version!)
Wanton Jam
The Rover
Rover Jam/Night Flight
Chuck Berry Medley: No Particular Place To Go
CBM Nadine
CBM Reelin' and Rockin'
Rockabilly Jam: Move On Down The Line
RJ Rock Me Like A Hurricane
RJ Keep On Movin
RJ Dynamite/Shakin' All Over

Lineage: LP-> Sound Forge ->Click and Crackle Removal ->Flac via TLH, level 6, sectors aligned and verified, FLAC integrity checked

Enjoy!
