Too cool for Newport Beach on New Year's Eve

We spent New Year's Eve at Newport Beach, which is 45 minutes north of Sydney. Newport sits at the head of the Pittwater inlet in a small valley -- Norfolk Island Pines line the beach. It was a hot day, but we were able to stay out of the heat thanks to our beach tent.

Ice Cream Boat at Fairlight Beach

Fairlight Beach is short and narrow enveloped by a nice grassy area. A 25-meter pool is filled with water from the harbor and is adjacent to the beach

At harbor beaches like Fairlight on busy summer days, the Ice Cream boat (behind Isaac) will show up and sell frozen treats. Fortunately we haven't taught Isaac what the Ice Cream Boat is, so he didn't know what he was missing.

This Year's Christmas Card to Family Friends

Christmas 2005

Dear Friends and Family,

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! We hope this card finds you well. Fifteen months have passed since Ben's work brought us to Australia. We have since picked up a few local habits like eating meat pies, swatting at flies, and re-using grocery bags – all behavior that we'll cease when we come back to the States. In turn, we've tried to give back to the community by sharing with them examples of American culture such as chocolate brownies, Halloween parties, and Napoleon Dynamite.

Not sure when we're moving back to California, but we were lucky to romp around Australia, South Africa, and Fiji a bit this year. We're excited that Ann is pregnant with a girl – due in January. Isaac is turning heads with his surprisingly strong American accent, loving his swim classes, and still in to girls and fast cars. We also moved to a different neighborhood here in Sydney, so update your address book.

May your holiday season bring peace and joy to you and your loved ones.

Love,

Ben, Ann, and Isaac

Christmas Eve visit to Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park

Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park is about 1 hour north of Sydney where the Hawkesbury River meets the sea. We went up there to check out the winding creeks, sandstone ridges, dense forests on the slopes, and mangroves on the tidal mudflats.

Here's a lookout over Bobbin Head -- note that footbridge spanning the river.

Our trip to explore Australia

We finally took a trip to explore more of Australia other than just Sydney. This picture is of Isaac and I on a cruise on the Daintree River up in North Queensland looking for crocodiles.

Crocodiles!

Here's one of the many crocodiles we saw sunning themselves on the side of the banks....
Love the jellyfish sign warning of deadly marine stingers in the area - along with the vinegar.

Family pic overlooking Cape Tribulation.

Another random animal road sign - Cassowary crossing - large freaky looking birds that run wild up there.

Isaac waiting for his favorite part of the day - the car ferry while standing in front of a sign warning of crocodile infested waters.

Isaac and mommy on one of the deserted beaches up north there.

Here's Ben and Isaac on a rainforest walk - Isaac's picked up a little souvenir leaf to take home.

Loving all the animals....

Up close and personal with a koala!

Isaac petting a baby crocodile.
Isaac and Daddy on the Rainforest Skyrail ride.

Looking at the beautiful reef through a glass bottom boat.

Daddy found nemo diving on the reef.

Isaac contemplating whether or not he wants to dive in and look for nemo out on the great barrier reef.

Daddy and Isaac LOVING the beautiful beach on green island.
Isaac LOVED going on the scenic train ride in the mountains.

Stopping off from the train to look at some beautiful waterfalls.

Looks like we just missed being eaten by crocodiles yesterday on the car ferry.

Getting off the BIG airplane in the red center of Australia.

Hiking the Olgas in the outback.
We found some wild camels by the side of the road in the outback.

Beautiful wildflowers in the spring in the outback.

Climbing Kings Canyon.

Isaac falls asleep sandwich in hand on the hike.

In the middle of the outback desert there's a beautiful waterhole.
Isaac and Daddy hiking around the base of the "big red rock" as Isaac called it.

It is pretty big.

Some aboriginal art on the rock.

Family pic in front of Uluru.

Another family pic just before sunset.
That's right - a no speed limit sign.

Ben hiked Uluru without the fam - him on top with the Olgas in the background.

The chains you need to use to hike up the rock.

A picture of the fam hiking the spit to manly hike.

What a bug!
