Ta-Da!

Before:

A drain pipe is attached to the gutter spouts. It goes under the rock wall & ends in a low-erosion pop up valve in the lawn.

1 1/2 truck loads of top soil added
I might still add some rock to this lower portion.
This was 5 or 6 loads of rock at 500-600lbs/trip since that was my truck's capacity. There are a few small rocks left over (stacked up along the base of the wall). Because of their small size they didn't stack well in the wall, so I'll use them somewhere else in the yard.

The black tubing is part of an inexpensive drip water system. It will be buried underground for about 20 feet & then pop up in the flower bed that surrounds the Pin Oak in our front yard. It connects directly to the faucet which will have a "Y" connector (so I can continue to use the faucet without disconnecting the watering system), and a timer.

Tyson's Head injury

New house. Stairs where before there were none. A very hard landing. Need I say more?
The last time we spent hours in the ER, only to have them superglue the wound, I decided to get smart. We now have a supply of butterfly bandages for the kind of owies that are a little more serious that what a bandaid can fix, but a little too small for stitches.
I had to shave around the wound on Tyson's head in order to get this one closed up. Paul said it would probably look better to shave the whole head rather than have a gaping bald spot. So, a few days later when the cut was well on it's way to healing, we buzzed all Tyson's hair off.
Jayden gasped when he saw Tyson's locks falling to the floor. "Our friends are going to laugh at us." He said.
I could understand why maybe he might think they'd laugh at Tyson, but I wondered why he thought they'd laugh at him too. His response: "Because I'm the brother of the little baldie baby"

Batty Reunion- Avon, CO

What a fabulous reunion!

Us Kids... and Rattlesnakes

I got to see Cody for a short time on this trip! He flew in from Alaska to do a motorcycle trip with Mac. They rearranged their travels so that we could link up.
You will not believe this when I tell you! We were driving out of the campground at about dusk when my mom stopped the truck & pointed to a rattlesnake in the middle of the road. Before I knew what was happening, my Alaska brother (a.k.a. "The Hunter") flung his door open & had grabbed a walking stick out of the back of the truck. We was running toward the rattlesnake with reckless abandon. I'm a little embarrassed to say that my mothering instincts got the better of me & I found myself screaming "NO! Don't touch it! Come back here!!!" This is the brother who has killed more rattlesnakes than he can remember... I'm sure he had everything under control, but he was much too close for MY comfort.
The rattler was poised to strike, but somehow Cody used his walking stick to squash it's head. This all happened within seconds. Then Paul buried it's head with a shovel.
The part you won't believe is this: My mom threw the rattler in a Wal-Mart bag to save it for a friend of hers who likes to eat them. (Am I the only one who thinks that's a little weird?!)
Two hours later we came back to camp. Cody had told me the snake would still be moving. NO WAY! I thought. Sure enough, the darn thing was not only moving, it was twisting & tying itself into knots.
They gutted it then skinned it & tacked the skin out on a board with salt to dry so Mel could make a hat band out of it. Okay..,. so now the snake has NO brain, NO guts, NO skin... just the muscle & skeleton. It was STILL twisting around in the bag when we put it in the freezer. It's the freakiest thing I've ever seen!
I don't know if I'm more appalled about the snake, or that my family actually skins & freezes them.
I'm pretty certain I must have been switched at birth!

Martin's Cove, WY

I haven't been able to spend much time with my cousins since we were kids. This year our reunion date worked out that my whole family could attend the Barnes Family Reunion. It was such a neat experience! We camped at Martin's Cove, WY which is a historic site for the Mormon Handcart Pioneers from which I descend. We all came away with a greater appreciation of our freedoms, luxuries, and our families and spouses.
